Radiolarians form a remarkable part of the fossil plankton for Cretaceous sediments of the North Atlantic. Selected sites with long-term sedimentary successions of deep facies were studied (ODP Leg 103 and DSDP Site 398 off northwest Spain and DSDP Site 603 off the east coast of the United States). Preservation of the radiolarian faunas is generally poor, and the faunal abundance and diversity reflect the diagenetic history of the host sediment rather than the original faunal productivity. Several exceptions include abundant and some well-preserved radiolarian faunas from lower Campanian, Cenomanian/Turonian boundary, upper Albian, lower Albian, and Barremian sediments. These increases in radiolarian abundance and preservation coincide with well-established Cretaceous oceanic events in the North Atlantic. Typical faunal associations of these sections are described, and faunal associations from the Cenomanian/Turonian Boundary Event are documented for the first time in the North Atlantic. The relationship of the radiolarian blooms with coeval oceanic events in the North Atlantic is also discussed.

The opaque mineralogy and the contents and isotope compositions of sulfur in serpentinized peridotites from the MARK (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Kane Fracture Zone) area were examined to understand the conditions of serpentinization and evaluate this process as a sink for seawater sulfur. The serpentinites contain a sulfur-rich secondary mineral assemblage and have high sulfur contents (up to 1 wt.%) and elevated d34S_sulfide (3.7 to 12.7?). Geochemical reaction modeling indicates that seawater-peridotite interaction at 300 to 400°C alone cannot account for both the high sulfur contents and high d34S_sulfide. These require a multistage reaction with leaching of sulfide from subjacent gabbro during higher temperature (~400°C) reactions with seawater and subsequent deposition of sulfide during serpentinization of peridotite at ~300°C. Serpentinization produces highly reducing conditions and significant amounts of H2 and results in the partial reduction of seawater carbonate to methane. The latter is documented by formation of carbonate veins enriched in 13C (up to 4.5?) at temperatures above 250°C. Although different processes produce variable sulfur isotope effects in other oceanic serpentinites, sulfur is consistently added to abyssal peridotites during serpentinization. Data for serpentinites drilled and dredged from oceanic crust and from ophiolites indicate that oceanic peridotites are a sink for up to 0.4 to 6.0 mln ton seawater S per year. This is comparable to sulfur exchange that occurs in hydrothermal systems in mafic oceanic crust at midocean ridges and on ridge flanks and amounts to 2 to 30% of the riverine sulfate source and sedimentary sulfide sink in the oceans. The high concentrations and modified isotope compositions of sulfur in serpentinites could be important for mantle metasomatism during subduction of crust generated at slow spreading rates.

Samples obtained in Hole 803D for shipboard determination of index properties were analyzed to determine their microfossil constituents. The resulting data are compared to shipboard-measured physical properties data to assess the relationships between small-scale fluctuations in physical properties and microfossil content and preservation. The establishment of relationships involving index properties of these highly calcareous sediments is difficult because of the role of intraparticle porosity. Relationships were observed between calculated interparticle porosity and microfossil content. Impedance, calculated using bulk density based on interparticle porosity, exhibits an increase with increasing grain size. Variations in the coarse fraction constituents appear to exert more control over physical properties than variations in the fine-fraction constituents, although the fine fraction make up greater than 85% of the samples by weight.

Bacterial cell number in the water column of the Kara Sea and estuary areas of the Ob and Yenisey Rivers was determined in water samples collected at 32 stations at depths from the surface to 200 m. The samples were analyzed by direct microscopy. In most parts of the sea microorganism concentrations ranged generally from 103 to 104 cells per ml and their biomasses from milligrams to tens of mg/m**3. Bacterioplankton concentration of river waters was much higher than in the open sea, especially in Ob waters. The highest bacteria concentrations, hundreds of thousands cells per ml with biomass exceeding 200 mg/m**3, were found in the southern part of the Ob section. Minimal concentrations were observed in the northeastern part and near the southeastern part of the Ob section and the southeastern coast of Novaya Zemlya. Dark CO2 fixation rates determined at some stations indicated low bacteria biomass production.

Samples of Lower to middle Cretaceous rocks from ODP Sites 638, 640, and 641, drilled on the Galicia continental margin in the northeast Atlantic, have been investigated by organic geochemical methods (i.e., organic carbon determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, kerogen microscopy, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) to define the Organofacies types and the depositional environments of these sediments. The results of this study fit well into the general picture drawn for the depositional history of the organic matter in Cretaceous organic-carbon-rich sediments in the North Atlantic from previous DSDP investigations. During the Valanginian to Albian, terrigenous organic carbon dominated the organic matter deposited on the Galicia continental margin. Cyclic changes in total organic carbon content were probably controlled by climatic-triggered changes in the supply of terrigenous organic matter from the nearby continent. A drastic change in depositional environment must have occurred near the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary. The preservation of large amounts of marine organic carbon in these sediments was probably caused by anoxic deep-water conditions during that time, rather than high productivity. All of the primary organic matter of the sediment samples investigated is thermally immature, as indicated by very low vitrinite reflectance values.

Concentrations of Fe, Mg, Ca, Sr, Mn, Zn, and other heavy metals were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry in 27 chert samples from the Pacific deep sea, 17 chert samples from land, and 4 associated sediments from the Pacific Ocean. Among the elements, Fe and Mg concentrations are highly correlatable as are the relationships between Ca and Sr, or between Ca and CO2. The correlation between Fe and Mg is particularly high for Pacific deep-sea flints and cherts, and for cherts of deep-sea origin from outcrops on land. Enrichments in heavy metals were recognized in some deep-sea cherts; volcanogenic cherts are enriched in Fe, a chert nodule containing basaltic fragments is enriched in Zn and Cr, and biogenically enclosed carbonates in flint nodules are enriched in Mn. The correlation of Fe and Mg and their constant ratio [Mg(%)/Fe(%)] of around 0.33 might be characteristic features in the pelagic clays contained in deep-sea flints and cherts, and the concentrations of heavy metals in them would be controlled by the concentrations of Fe-Mg correlated clays. Although the mineralogical nature of the Fe-Mg clay in deep-sea cherts was not clarified by dissolution experiments on opaline minerals in chert, the high concentrations of Fe-montmorillonite and fine-grained olivine or other ferromagnesian silicate minerals in the clay may result in the high correlations between Fe and Mg.
