Mineral and chemical compositions of authigenic carbonates are studied by several methods in a sediment core collected in the axial zone of the Deryugin riftogenic basin. Manganese carbonates (kutnahorite, rhodochrosite) associated with manganiferous calcite, manganiferous pyrite, and nontronite are firstly identified in the Sea of Okhotsk. Manganese carbonates in Holocene diatomaceous ooze were presumably formed due to diagenetic transformation of sedimentary manganese hydroxides, organic matter, and biogenic silica, while those found in the underlying turbidites precipitated owing to the intermittent influx of endogenic fluids migrating along sand interbeds.

Very rare, halogen-rich andesite melt inclusions (HRA) in bytownitic plagioclase phenocrysts (An89-90) from tephra fallout of the Izu arc volcanic front (Izu VF) provide new insights into the processes of fluid release from slab trenchward to the volcanic front in a cool subduction zone. These HRA are markedly enriched in Cl, F and Li - by factors of up to 8 (Cl, F) and 1.5 (Li) - but indistinguishable with respect to the fluid-mobile large-ion lithophile elements (LILE; K, Sr, Rb, Cs, Ba, Pb, U), rare earths (REE) or high field strength elements (HFSE) from the low-K tholeiitic magmas of the Izu VF. We suggest that the chemical signature of the HRA reflects the presence of a fluid in the mantle source that originated from the serpentinized mantle peridotite above the metacrust. This "wedge serpentinite" presumably formed by fluid infiltration beneath the forearc and was subsequently down-dragged with the slab to arc front depths. The combined evidence from the Izu VF (?110 km above slab) and the outer forearc serpentinite seamounts (~25 to 30 km above slab) suggests that the slab flux of B and Cl is highest beneath the forearc, and decreases with increasing slab depths. In contrast, the slab flux of Li is minor beneath the forearc, but increases with depth. Fluorine may behave similarly to Li, whereas the fluid-mobile LILE appear to be largely retained in the slab trenchward from the Izu VF. Consequently, the chemical signatures of both Izu trench sediments and basaltic rocks appear preserved until arc front depths.

New petrological and geochemical data were obtained for basalts recovered during cruise 24 of the R/V "Akademik Nikolay Strakhov" in 2006. These results significantly contributed to the understanding of the formation of tholeiitic magmatism at the northern end of the Knipovich Ridge of the Polar Atlantic. Dredging was performed for the first time both in the rift valley and on the flanks of the ridge. It showed that the conditions of magmatism have not changed since at least 10 Ma. The basalts correspond to slightly enriched tholeiites, whose primary melts were derived at the shallowest levels and were enriched in Na and depleted in Fe (Na-TOR type). The most enriched basalts are typical of the earlier stages of the opening and were found on the flanks of the ridge in its northernmost part. Variations in the ratios of Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes and lithophile elements allowed us to conclude that the primary melts generated beneath the spreading zone of the Knipovich Ridge were modified by the addition of the enriched component that was present both in the Neogene and Quaternary basalts of Spitsbergen Island. Compared with the primitive mantle, the extruding magmas were characterized by positive Nb and Zr anomalies and a negative Th anomaly. The formation of primary melts involved melting of the metasomatized depleted mantle reservoir that appeared during the early stages of opening of the Norwegian-Greenland Basin and transformation of the paleo-Spitsbergen Fault into the Knipovich spreading ridge, which was accompanied by magmatism in western Spitsbergen during its separation from the northern part of Greenland.

Interstitial water analyses from sediments collected during Leg 25 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project have revealed that in the southwest Indian Ocean, great chemical activity exists in sediments in various depositional environments. Variable sedimentation rates allow us to set some interesting boundary conditions on chemical and transport processes in these interstitial waters, particularly with regard to the distribution of dissolved sulfate. In terrigenous rapidly deposited sediments, large depletions are observed in magnesium and potassium, whereas relatively small decreases in dissolved calcium occur. In slowly deposited detrital sediments, also, large decreases in potassium and magnesium coincide with very large calcium increases. In truly pelagic sediments, a one to one replacement of magnesium by calcium is observed in the interstitial waters, presumably due to reactions in the basal sediment layers. Biogenous deposits have great influence on dissolved silica (sponge spicules and radiolarians) and on dissolved strontium (carbonate recrystallization). Otherwise, dissolved silica reflects the clay mineralogy and shows variations which seem particularly dependent on the presence or absence of kaolinite. Variable dissolved manganese values reflect reducing conditions and/or availability of manganese in the solid phases for mobilization in reducing sediments.

The conventional model of leaching volcanic rocks as a source of metals in a seafloor hydrothermal systems has been tested by examining the behavior of Pb and other trace elements during hydrothermal alteration. ODP Leg 193 drill sites 1188 (Snowcap) and 1189 (Roman Ruins) on Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus Basin offshore eastern Papua New Guinea provide a unique three-dimensional window into an active back-arc hydrothermal system. We investigate by means of a LA-ICP-MS microbeam technique the capacity of Pb to be leached from a host volcanic rock exposed to various types and intensities of alteration. Our results are in general agreement with previous studies that utilized bulk analytical techniques but provide a more detailed explanation of the processes. Fresh representative dacitic lavas from the Pual Ridge have an average whole rock Pb content of 5.2 ppm, an average interstitial glass Pb content of 5.6 ppm and an average plagioclase Pb content of 1.0 ppm. Altered matrix samples have highly variable Pb values ranging from 0 to 52.4 ppm. High Pb values in altered samples are associated with a low temperature chlorite and clay mineral assemblage, in some cases overprinted by a high temperature (up to 350°C) silica-rich "bleaching" alteration. Only the most highly altered matrix samples have REE patterns that differ from the fresh Pual Ridge dacite. This may represent either different lava histories or alteration characteristics that have affected normally immobile REEs. Altered samples with the highest Pb values have similar REE patterns to those of the local unaltered lavas. They are compositionally similar to typical Pual Ridge dacites indicating a genetic relationship between the main regional volcanic suite and the subseafloor hydrothermally altered, Pb-enriched material. Relative loss/gain for Pb between the analyzed altered samples and a calculated precursor show a maximum relative gain of 901%. Samples with relative Pb gain from both drill sites are associated with lower temperature alteration mineral assemblages characterized by pervasive chloritization. The related lower temperature (220-250°C) neutral to slightly acidic fluids have been ascribed by others to return circulation of hydrothermal fluids that did not interact with seawater. Because altered samples have a higher Pb content than the fresh precursor, leaching of fresh volcanic rocks cannot be the source of Pb in the hydrothermal systems.

Two silicate-rich dust layers were found in the Dome Fuji ice core in East Antarctica, at Marine Isotope Stages 12 and 13. Morphologies, textures, and chemical compositions of constituent particles reveal that they are high-temperature melting products and are of extraterrestrial origin. Because similar layers were found ~2000 km east of Dome Fuji, at EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica)-Dome C, particles must have rained down over a wide area 434 and 481 ka. The strewn fields occurred over an area of at least 3 × 10**6 km**2. Chemical compositions of constituent phases and oxygen isotopic composition of olivines suggest that the upper dust layer was produced by a high-temperature interaction between silicate-rich melt and water vapor due to an impact explosion or an aerial burst of a chondritic meteoroid on the inland East Antarctic ice sheet. An estimated total mass of the impactor, on the basis of particle flux and distribution area, is at least 3 × 10**9 kg. A possible parent material of the lower dust layer is a fragment of friable primitive asteroid or comet. A hypervelocity impact of asteroidal/cometary material on the upper atmosphere and an explosion might have produced aggregates of sub-µm to µm-sized spherules. Total mass of the parent material of the lower layer must exceed 1 × 10**9 kg. The two extraterrestrial horizons, each a few millimeters in thickness, represent regional or global meteoritic events not identified previously in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Ninetyeast Ridge (NER), a north-south striking, 5,000 km long, 77 to 43 Ma chain of basaltic submarine volcanoes in the eastern Indian Ocean formed as a hotspot track created by rapid northward migration of the Indian Plate over the Kerguelen hotspot. Based on the major and trace element contents of unaltered basaltic glasses from six locations along the NER, we show that the NER was constructed by basaltic magma derived from at least three geochemically distinct mantle sources: (1) a source enriched in highly incompatible elements relative to primitive mantle like the source of the 29-24 Ma flood basalts in the Kerguelen Archipelago; (2) an incompatible element-depleted source similar to the source of Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalt (MORB) erupted along the currently active Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR); and (3) an incompatible element-depleted source that is compositionally and mineralogically distinct from the source of SEIR MORB. Specifically, this depleted mantle source was garnet-bearing and had higher Y/Dy and Nb/Zr, but lower Zr/Sm, than the SEIR MORB source. We infer that this third source formed as a garnet-bearing residue created during a previous melting event, perhaps an initial partial melting of the mantle hotspot. Subsequently, this residue partially melted over a large pressure range, from slightly over 3 GPa to less than 1 GPa, and to a high extent (~ 30%) thereby creating relatively high SiO2 and FeO contents in some NER basalts relative to SEIR MORB.

The Cenozoic volcanic activity on Iceland has been recorded in North Atlantic sediments drilled during several Ocean Drilling Program (ODP)/Deep Sea Drilling Project legs (Legs 104, 151, 152, 162, and 163). Leg 162 (North Atlantic-Arctic Gateways II) recovered ash layers at Sites 982, 985, and 907 (Jansen, Raymo, Blum, et al., 1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.162.1996). The revisited Site 907 was first drilled during Leg 151, and the ash from this site has been described in detail by Lacasse et al. (1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.151.122.1996) and Werner et al. (1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.151.123.1996). Site 982 is located within the Hatton-Rockall Basin on the Rockall Plateau, which is situated west of the British Isles. Site 985 is located northeast of Iceland at the foot of the eastern slope of the Iceland Plateau, adjacent to the Norwegian Basin. Here we report chemical analyses of Neogene tephra layers from Holes 982A, 983B, 982C, 985A, and 985B. The sedimentary sequence at Site 982 spans the lower Miocene-Holocene; Site 985 recovered sediments spanning the upper Oligocene-Holocene. Twenty-two distinct ash layers and ash-bearing sediments were sampled in Holes 982A-982C (Cores 162-982A-16H through 24H, 162-982B-14H through 56X, and 162-982C-15H through 27H), and 59 ash layers were sampled in Holes 985A and 985B (Cores 162-985A-11H through 59X, and 162-985B-11H through 14H). Almost 50% of the sampled ash is strongly altered (predominantly from Site 985). A cluster of altered thin layers in the lower Pliocene of Site 985 (top of Unit III) is remarkable.

The paper is devoted to a marine geophysical-geological research in the West Antarctic. This researche contributed to establishing the base geodesic network of the West Antarctic and supplemented geokinematic monitoring based on this network with geophysical and geologic information on structure and features of geomorphological and tectonic development of the South Ocean floor. Collected materials allow to conclude about the inhomogeneity of the Scotia Sea floor and about combination of fragments of a continental massif with young rift structures in conditions of the upwelling mantle. The ancient continental bridge, faunal connections between the South America and the West Antarctic has been destroyed by processes of destruction, taphrogeny and sea floor spreading. Structures of the Scotia and Caribbean Seas, North Fiji and Arctic Basins are similar.

Approximately 5 m of aphyric to sparsely phyric basalt was recovered from Hole 581, the only hole on Leg 86 where basement was cored. The occurrence of samples with altered glassy rinds indicates that at least three cooling units (pillows or thin flows) were sampled. The samples were moderately to intensely altered; groundmass crystals are generally fresh, but all glass is altered. Alteration is greatest in vesicular samples, but most of the samples have fractures filled with iron oxyhydroxide, clay, and/or calcite. All 13 samples analyzed are moderately fractionated aluminous N-type mid-ocean ridge basalts. The samples can be divided into two groups based on TiO2 and FeO contents. The least-evolved group may be derived from a more primitive mid-ocean ridge basalt by the crystallization of 18% plagioclase, 24% clinopyroxene, and 3% olivine. The more evolved group may be derived from the first group by the fractionation of 18% plagioclase, 11% clinopyroxene, and 3% olivine. However, higher Ce/Yb ratios in the more evolved group cannot be produced by fractionation and thus we must invoke a more complex process such as dynamic melting to relate the two groups to a common source.
