Massive, nearly holocrystalline dolerites from DSDP Hole 417D contain from 0.5 to 1.5% of granophyric patches composed mainly of Na-plagioclase and quartz. These patches are compositionally similar to other crystalline silicic rocks from oceanic spreading centers and differ from rarer abyssal silicic glasses. Crystalline varieties with SiO2 > 60 wt.% generally have Na/K >10, whereas silicic glasses have Na/K in the range 3-6. While crystal fractionation readily accounts for the Na2O and K2O contents of abyssal silicic glasses, both the 417D granophyres and other crystalline abyssal silicic rocks have much lower K2O than that predicted by any reasonable crystal-liquid fractionation model. We propose that high-temperature vapor phase transport is responsible for removal of potassium during late-stage crystallization of these rocks. This allows for the formation of cogenetic silicic glassy and crystalline rocks with greatly different Na/K ratios. These observations and interpretations lead to a more confident assignment of high Na/K silicic rocks of oceanic and ophiolitic environments to a cogenetic origin with basaltic oceanic crust.

Two genetically different types of authigenic carbonate mounds are studied: (1) from an active hydrothermal field related to serpentinite protrusions in a zone of intersection of a transform fracture zone with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, (2) from an active field of methane seepings in the Dnieper canyon of the Black sea. General geochemical conditions, under which authigenic carbonate formation occurs within these two fields, were found. They include: presence of reduced H2S, H2, and CH4 gases at absence of free oxygen; high alkalinity of waters participating in carbonate formation; similarity of textural and structural features of authigenic aragonite, which represents the initial carbonate mineral of the mounds; paragenesis of aragonite with sulfide minerals; close relation of carbonate mounds with communities of sulfate-reducing and methane-oxidizing microorganisms. A new mechanism of formation of hydrothermal authigenic carbonates is suggested. It implies their microbial sulfate reduction over hydrogen from fluid in the subsurface mixing zone of hydrothermal solution and adjacent seawater.

Clay minerals are examined in detail in the sediment from the Tonga Trench margin at Site 841 (Leg 135 ODP). The changes in amount and nature of secondary clays with depth provide an alternative explanation for the intensive alteration of volcanogenic material at convergent margins. A characteristic distribution of clay minerals with depth shows four distinct zones unexplainable by simple burial diagenesis processes. These are named the upper, reactive, lower and rhyolitic zones. The reactive zone is intercalated with numerous sills and is characterized by the dominant iron-rich clays such as saponite, corrensite and chlorite associated with analcime. The occurrence of such iron-rich clays, mostly associated with a large amount of analcime, yields chemical and mineralogical evidence for thermal diagenesis. The required heat for the diagenetic process was transferred from recently intruded basaltic andesite sills. In the vicinity of these intrusions, the iron-rich clay minerals may have formed at temperatures up to 200°C. A zoning with respect to clay and zeolite minerals indicates that the influence of the palaeoheat flow decreased with the distance from the intrusion. The formation of interlayered I/S, illite, kaolinite and aluminous chlorite, which are recognized as major secondary minerals within the rhyolitic complex, was mainly controlled by both early diagenesis at moderately elevated temperatures, and since the Eocene by burial diagenesis at low temperatures. The occurrence of a steam zone in an early stage of the intrusion is restricted to Miocene tuffs and has overprinted the early alteration of the volcanogenic material within the tuffs and has changed the originally pristine composition of the pore fluids.

Sites 482, 483, and 485 were drilled during Leg 65 on young oceanic crust south of the Tamayo Transform Fault. The Leg 65 drilling program was part of a multinational effort to study the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and complements sea bottom surveys conducted both in this area (Lewis, 1979; Cyamex Scientific Team and Pastouret, 1981) and farther south at 21 °N (Larson, 1971; Normark, 1976; Cyamex Scientific Team; Rise Project Group, 1980). These studies, which included deep-tow, Angus and submersible surveys, were recently complemented by sea-beam surveys conducted by the Jean Charcot on the Tamayo Fracture Zone and farther south along the EPR. They have led to a better understanding of the magmatic, tectonic, and sedimentary processes occurring on the East Pacific Rise between the Tamayo and Rivera fracture zones. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the metamorphic processes affecting Pliocene through Quaternary sediments found in contact, or inter layered, with basaltic units drilled during Leg 65 at the mouth of the Gulf of California.

We detected authigenic clinoptilolites in two core samples of tuffaceous, siliceous mudstone in the lower Miocene section of Hole 439. They occur as prismatic and tabular crystals as long as 0.03 mm in various voids of dissolved glass shards, radiolarian shells, calcareous foraminifers, and calcareous algae. They are high in alkalies, especially Na, and in silica varieties. There is a slight difference in composition among them. The Si : (Al+ Fe3+) ratio is highest (4.65) in radiolarian voids, intermediate (4.34) in dissolved glass voids, and lowest (4.26) in voids of calcareous organisms. This difference corresponds to the association of authigenic silica minerals revealed by the scanning electron microscope: There are abundant opal-CT lepispheres in radiolarian voids, low cristobalite and some lepispheres in dissolved glass voids, and a lack of silica minerals in the voids of calcareous organisms. Although it contains some silica from biogenic opal and alkalies from trapped sea water, clinoptilolite derives principally from dissolved glass. Although they are scattered in core samples of Quaternary through lower Miocene diatomaceous and siliceous deposits, acidic glass fragments react with interstitial water to form clinoptilolite only at a sub-bottom depth of 935 meters at approximately 25°C. Analcimes occur in sand-sized clasts of altered acidic vitric tuff in the uppermost Oligocene sandstones. The analcimic tuff clasts were probably reworked from the Upper Cretaceous terrain adjacent to Site 439. Low cristobalite and opal-CT are found in tuffaceous, siliceous mudstone of the middle and lower Miocene sections at Sites 438 and 439. Low cristobalite derives from acidic volcanic glass and opal-CT from biogenic silica. Both siliceous organic remains and acidic glass fragments occur in sediments from the Quaternary through lower Miocene sections. However, the shallowest occurrence is at 700 meters subbottom in Hole 438A, where temperature is estimated to be 21°C. The d(101) spacing of opal-CT varies from 4.09 to 4.11 Å and that of low cristobalite from 4.04 to 4.06 Å. Some opal-CT lepispheres are precipitated onto clinoptilolites in the voids of radiolarian shells at a sub-bottom depth of 950 meters in Hole 439. Sandstone interlaminated with Upper Cretaceous shale is chlorite- calcite cemented and feldspathic. Sandstones in the uppermost Oligocene section are lithic graywacke and consist of large amounts of lithic clasts grouped into older sedimentary and weakly metamorphosed rocks, younger sedimentary rocks, and acidic volcanic rocks. The acidic volcanic clasts probably originated from the volcanic high, which supplied the basal conglomerate with dacite gravels. The older sedimentary and weakly metamorphosed rocks and green rock correspond to the lithologies of the lower Mesozoic to upper Paleozoic Sorachi Group, including the chert, limestone, and slate in south-central Hokkaido. However, the angular shape and coarseness of the clasts and the abundance of carbonate rock fragments indicate a nearby provenance, which is probably the southern offshore extension of the Sorachi Group. The younger sedimentary rocks, including mudstone, carbonaceous shale, and analcime-bearing tuff, correspond to the lithologies of the Upper Cretaceous strata in south-central Hokkaido. Their clasts were reworked from the southern offshore extension of the strata. Because of the discontinuity of the zeolite zoning due to burial diagenesis, an overburden several kilometers thick must have been denuded before the deposition of sediments in the early Oligocene.

A joint analysis of data on the anomalous magnetic field, seismicity, and structures of the Hess deep basalts have allowed to specify propagation of the spreading zone and to correct position of the neovolcanic zone. A precise petrogeochemical analysis of various types of basalts composing the uneven-aged oceanic crust of the basin showed that magmatics of the neovolcanic zone are related to the primitive type in contrast to rift boards of differential basalts. A model of the deep structure of the Galapagos rift in the area of the western Hess Deep has been suggested.

Within a dipping sequence of middle Cretaceous to Eocene sediments on Broken Ridge, opal-A, opal-CT, and quartz occur as minor constituents in carbonate and ash-rich sediments. Biogenic opal-A is mainly derived from diatoms and radiolarians. Opal-A and almost all siliceous microfossils disappear within a narrow (<20-m-thick) transition zone below which authigenic opal-CT and quartz are present. These latter silica polymorphs occur together within a 750-m-thick interval, but the ratio of quartz/opal-CT increases with increasing age and depth within the pre-rift sediment sequence. The boundary between opal-A- and opal-CT-bearing sediments is also a physical boundary at which density, P-wave velocity, and acoustic impedance change. This physical transition is probably caused by infilling of pore space by opal-CT lepispheres.

Distributions of major and trace elements in ferromanganese nodules, which are buried or exposed on the sea floor and in host sediments, were studied in ten concretion/sediment pairs by various physical and chemical methods. It was established that, in addition to Fe and Mn, a limited number of major and trace elements (P, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mo, Co, Zn, Ni, As, Pb, Sb, Tl, U, W, Y, and Ga) is accumulated with variable degree of intensity (relative to sediments) in the nodules. The maximal content of Mn in the nodules is 100 times higher than in the host sediments, whereas for all other elements listed above these ratios vary from more than one to 10-20. Manganese and, to a lesser extent, Ba and Sr are concentrated in the buried concretions. Other elements are primarily concentrated in concretions exposed on the sea floor. The occurrence mode of the concretions and compositional data on interstitial water suggest that metals in the concretions derive from seawater and suspended particulates, in addition to sediments. Burial of concretions in the sediment pile is accompanied by alteration of their composition, accumulation of Mn (relative to Fe), and loss of several associated metals.

Late Miocene sediments from ODP Sites 652 and 654, drilled on the Sardinian margin in the Western Tyrrhenian Sea, are investigated through mineralogical, micromorphological, geochemical, and microgeochemical analyses. Clay associations appear to be little controlled by conditions of deposition, and largely depend on pre- and post-depositional conditions. The sedimentary series from Central Mediterranean gives very different geodynamic information, according to the sector considered. While relatively stable conditions, like those encountered in Caltanissetta Basin, Sicily, favor the mineralogical expression of warm-temperate and subarid Messinian climate, the Eastern Sardinia margin (Site 654) clay suites mainly reflect the transition from tectonically active to relaxed conditions. The series deposited at the foot of the same margin above a thinner crust (Site 652) experienced the effects of burial diagenesis, enhanced by strong geothermal gradient.

Based on the data of synchronous observations of hydrophysical and biogeochemical parameters in the near-mouth and shallow-water areas of the northern Caspian in 2000-2001, the scale of spatiotemporal variability in the following characteristics of the water-bottom system was estimated (1) flow velocity and direction within vortex structures formed by the combined effect of wind, discharge current, and the presence of higher aquatic plants; (2) dependence of the spatial distribution of the content and composition of suspended particulate matter on the hydrodynamic regime of waters and development of phytoplankton; (3) variations in the grain-size, petrographic, mineralogical, and chemical compositions of the upper layer of bottom sediments at several sites in the northern Caspian related to the particular local combination of dominant natural processes; and (4) limits of variability in the group composition of humus compounds in bottom sediments. The acquired data are helpful in estimating the geochemical consequences of a sea level rise and during the planning of preventive environmental protection measures in view of future oil and gas recovery in this region.

Metal-rich sediments were found in the West Philippine Basin at DSDP sites 291 (located about 500 km SW of the Philippine Ridge or Central Basin Fault) and 294/295 (located about 580 km NE of the Philippine Ridge). In both cases the metalliferous deposits constitute a layer, probably Eocene in age, resting directly above the basaltic basement at the bottom of the sediment column. The chemistry of the major (including Fe and Mn) and trace elements (including trace metals, rare earth elements, U and Th) suggest a strong similarity of these deposits to metalliferous deposits produced by hydrothermal activity at oceanic spreading centers. Well-crystallized hematite is a major component of the metal-rich deposits at site 294/295. We infer that the Philippine Sea deposits were formed at some spreading center by hydrothermal processes of metallogenesis, similar to processes occurring at oceanic spreading centers. A locus for their formation might have been the Philippine Ridge (Central Basin Fault), probably an extinct spreading center. We conclude that metallogenesis of the type occurring at oceanic spreading centers can take place also in marginal basins. This has implications for the origin of metal deposits found in some ophiolite complexes, such as those in Luzon (Philippines), which may represent fragments of former marginal basins rather than of oceanic lithosphere.

We present an SiF4 separation line, coupled to a laser fluorination system, which allows for an efficient combined silica d18O and d30Si analysis (50 min per sample). The required sample weight of 1.5-2.0 mg allows for high-resolution isotope studies on biogenic opal. Besides analytical tests, the new instrumentation set-up was used to analyse two marine diatom fractions (>63 µm, 10-20 µm) with different diatom species compositions extracted from a Bølling/Allerød-Holocene core section [MD01-2416, North-West (NW) Pacific] to evaluate the palaeoceanographic significance of the diatom isotopic signals and to address isotopic effects related to contamination and species-related isotope effects (vital and environmental effects). While d30Si offsets between the two fractions were not discernible, supporting the absence of species-related silicon isotope effects, systematic offsets occur between the d18O records. Although small, these offsets point to species-related isotope effects, as bias by contamination can be discarded. The new records strengthen the palaeoceanographic history during the last deglaciation in the NW Pacific characterized by a sequence of events with varying surface water structure and biological productivity. With such palaeoceanographic evolution it becomes unlikely that the observed systematic d18O offsets signal seasonal temperature variability. This calls for reconsideration of vital effects, generally excluded to affect d18O measurements.

We have studied the chemical zoning of plagioclase phenocrysts from the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the intermediate-spreading rate Costa Rica Rift to obtain the time scales of magmatic processes beneath these ridges. The anorthite content, Mg, and Sr in plagioclase phenocrysts from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge can be interpreted as recording initial crystallisation from a primitive magma (~11 wt% MgO) in an open system. This was followed by crystal accumulation in a mush zone and later entrainment of crystals into the erupted magma. The initial magma crystallised plagioclase more anorthitic than those in equilibrium with any erupted basalt. Evidence that the crystals accumulated in a mush zone comes from both: (1) plagioclase rims that were in equilibrium with a Sr-poor melt requiring extreme differentiation; and (2) different crystals found in the same thin section having different histories. Diffusion modelling shows that crystal residence times in the mush were <140 years, whereas the interval between mush disaggregation and eruption was ?1.5 years. Zoning of anorthite content and Mg in plagioclase phenocrysts from the Costa Rica Rift show that they partially or completely equilibrated with a MgO-rich melt (>11 wt%). Partial equilibration in some crystals can be modelled as starting <1 year prior to eruption but for others longer times are required for complete equilibration. This variety of times is most readily explained if the mixing occurred in a mush zone. None of the plagioclase phenocrysts from the Costa Rica Rift that we studied have Mg contents in equilibrium with their host basalt even at their rims, requiring mixing into a much more evolved magma within days of eruption. In combination these observations suggest that at both intermediate- and slow-spreading ridges: (1) the chemical environment to which crystals are exposed changes on annual to decadal time scales; (2) plagioclase crystals record the existence of melts unlike those erupted; and (3) disaggregation of crystal mush zones appears to precede eruption, providing an efficient mechanism by which evolved interstitial melt can be mixed into erupted basalts.

Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary sediments from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 164 and 196 (13°12' N, 161°31' W and 30°07' N, 148°34' E, respectively) were analyzed for major chemical elements and mineralogy. Sediments from these sites contain large proportions of authigenic minerals: mainly palygorskite, clinoptilolite and chert in the Cretaceous, and montmorillonite, phillipsite and chert in the Tertiary. The montmorillonite-phillipsite assemblage is thought to be derived from volcanic ash or glass, and the palygorskite-clinoptilolite assemblage is thought to be derived by reaction of biogenic silica with volcanic ash or glass or with montmorillonite and phillipsite. Both assemblages have generally moderate Ti/Al ratios, ranging from 0.026 to 0.047, so most of the palygorskite, clinoptilolite, montmorillonite and phillipsite could not be derived in situ from alteration of basaltic material. Plagioclase compositions suggest that the volcanic precursors were silicic or intermediate, but it is also possible that the sediments have been extensively fractionated by redistribution from nearby seamounts. Available data on other Late Cretaceous sediments in the Pacific were analyzed. Clinoptilolite and chert are present nearly everywhere where palygorskite is abundant; phillipsite is rare where palygorskite is abundant. It is suggested that increased water temperatures during the Cretaceous increased reaction rates and determined the alteration products.

The mineralogy, major and trace elements, and neodymium and strontium isotopes of surface sediments in the South China Sea (SCS) are documented with the aim of investigating their applicability in provenance tracing. The results indicate that mineralogical compositions alone do not clearly identify the sources for the bulk sediments in the SCS. The Nd isotopic compositions of the SCS sediments show a clear zonal distribution. The most negative epsilon-Neodymium values were obtained for sediments from offshore South China (-13.0 to -10.7), while those from offshore Indochina are slightly more positive (-10.7 to -9.4). The Nd isotopic compositions of the sediments from offshore Borneo are even higher, with epsilon-Neodymium ranging from -8.8 to -7.0, and the sediments offshore from the southern Philippine Arc have the most positive epsilon-Neodymium values, from -3.7 to +5.3. This zonal distribution in epsilon-Neodymium is in good agreement with the Nd isotopic compositions of the sediments supplied by river systems that drain into the corresponding regions, indicating that Nd isotopic compositions are an adequate proxy for provenance tracing of SCS sediments. Sr isotopic compositions, in contrast, can only be used to identify the sediments from offshore South China and offshore from the southern Philippine Arc, as the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of sediments from other regions overlapped. Similar zonal distributions are also apparent in a La-Th-Sc discrimination diagram. Sediments fromthewestmargin of the SCS, such as those fromBeibuwan Bay, offshore fromHainan Island, offshore from Indochina, and from the Sunda Shelf plot in the same field, while those offshore from the northeastern SCS, offshore from Borneo, and offshore from the southern Philippine Arc plot in distinct fields. Thus, the La-Th-Sc discrimination diagram, coupledwith Nd isotopes, can be used to trace the provenance of SCS sediments. Using this method, we re-assessed the provenance changes of sediments at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1148 since the late Oligocene. The results indicate that sediments deposited after 23.8 Ma (above 455 mcd: meters composite depth) were supplied mainly from the eastern South China Block, with a negligible contribution from the interior of the South China Block. Sediments deposited before 26 Ma (beneath 477 mcd) were supplied mainly from the North Palawan Continental Terrane, which may retain the geochemical characteristics of the materials covered on the late Mesozoic granitoids along the coastal South China. For that the North Palawan Continental Terrane is presently located within the southern Philippine Arc but was located close to ODP Site 1148 in the late Oligocene. The weathering products of volcanic material associated with the extension of the SCS ocean crust also contributed to these sediments. The rapid change in sediment source at 26-23.8 Ma probably resulted from a sudden cessation of sediment supply from the North Palawan Continental Terrane. Wesuggest that the North Palawan Continental Terrane drifted southwards alongwith the extension of the SCS ocean crust during that time, and when the basin was large enough, the supply of sediment from the south to ODP Site 1148 at the north slope may have ceased.
