A pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of three biochars and compost on plant growth and the immobilisation of Cu in a contaminated soil obtained from a former wood preservation site in the Gironde County Saint Médard d'Eyrans, France (N 44° 43.353, W 0° 30.938). To assess Cu mobility, amended soils were analysed using CaCl**2 leaching tests pre- and post-incubation, and post-growth. Amended and unamended soils were planted with sunflower, and the resulting plant material was assessed for yield (mass and height) and Cu concentration. All amendments significantly reduced leachable Cu compared to the unamended soil, however, the greatest reductions in leachable Cu were associated with the higher biochar application rate. The greatest improvements in plant yields were obtained with the higher application rate of biochar in combination with compost. pH, DOC, EH were measured in soils to help explain the leaching and plant growth trends. Soil pore water was collected during plant growth and analysed for metal concentration, pH and EH. Prior to treatment, background analyses were carried out on the soil and individual amendments (including PAH + metal concentrations measured by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and ICP-AES respectively).

Pollen analyses have been proven to possess the possibility to decipher rapid vegetational and climate shifts in Neogene sedimentary records. Herein, a c. 21-kyr-long transgression-regression cycle from the Lower Austrian locality Stetten is analysed in detail to evaluate climatic benchmarks for the early phase of the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum and to estimate the pace of environmental change. Based on the Coexistence Approach, a very clear signal of seasonality can be reconstructed. A warm and wet summer season with c. 204-236 mm precipitation during the wettest month was opposed by a rather dry winter season with precipitation of c. 9-24 mm during the driest month. The mean annual temperature ranged between 15.7 and 20.8 °C, with about 9.6-13.3 °C during the cold season and 24.7-27.9 °C during the warmest month. In contrast, today's climate of this area, with an annual temperature of 9.8 °C and 660 mm rainfall, is characterized by the winter season (mean temperature: -1.4 °C, mean precipitation: 39 mm) and a summer mean temperature of 19.9 °C (mean precipitation: 84 mm). Different modes of environmental shifts shaped the composition of the vegetation. Within few millennia, marshes and salt marshes with abundant Cyperaceae rapidly graded into Taxodiaceae swamps. This quick but gradual process was interrupted by swift marine ingressions which took place on a decadal to centennial scale. The transgression is accompanied by blooms of dinoflagellates and of the green alga Prasinophyta and an increase in Abies and Picea. Afterwards, the retreat of the sea and the progradation of estuarine and wetland settings were a gradual progress again. Despite a clear sedimentological cyclicity, which is related to the 21-kyr precessional forcing, the climate data show little variation. This missing pattern might be due to the buffering of the precessional-related climate signal by the subtropical vegetation. Another explanation could be the method-inherent broad range of climate-parameter estimates that could cover small scale climatic changes.

Vertical structure of the strontium-90 concentration field and its relation to hydrology of waters are described on the basis of investigations in the Caribbean Sea during Cruises 6 and 7 of R/V Akademik Vernadsky (1972-1973). Vertical velocity and the coefficient of vertical turbulent diffusion are calculated for the eastern Caribbean Sea from strontium-90 concentration and salinity data.

Sixty-five chert, porcellanite, and siliceous-chalk samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 62 were analyzed by petrography, scanning electron microscopy, analysis by energy-dispersive X-rays, X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy, and semiquantitative emission spectroscopy. Siliceous rocks occur mainly in chalks, but also in pelagic clay and marlstone at Site 464. Overall, chert probably constitutes less than 5% of the sections and occurs in deposits of Eocene to Barremian ages at sub-bottom depths of 10 to 820 meters. Chert nodules and beds are commonly rimmed by quartz porcellanite; opal-CT-rich rocks are minor in Leg 62 sediments 65 to 108 m.y. old and at sub-bottom depths of 65 to 520 meters. Chert ranges from white to black, shades of gray and brown being most common; yellow-brown and red-brown jaspers occur at Site 464. Seventy-eight percent of the studied cherts contain easily recognizable burrow structures. The youngest chert at Site 463 is a quartz cast of a burrow. Burrow silica maturation is always one step ahead of host-rock silicification. Burrows are commonly loci for initial silicification of the host carbonate. Silicification takes place by volume-f or-volume replacement of carbonate sediment, and more-clay-rich sediment at Site 464. Nannofossils are commonly pseudomorphically replaced by quartz near the edges of chert beds and nodules. Other microfossils, mostly radiolarians and foraminifers, whether in chalk or chert, can be either filled with or replaced by calcite, opal-CT, and (or) quartz. Chemical micro-environments ultimately control the removal, transport, and precipitation of calcite and silica. Two cherts from Site 465 contain sulfate minerals replaced by quartz. Site 465 was never subaerially exposed after sedimentation began, and the formation of the sulfate minerals and their subsequent replacement probably occurred in the marine environment. Several other cherts with odd textures are described in this paper, including (1) a chert breccia cemented by colloform opal-CT and chalcedony, (2) a transition zone between white porcellanite containing opal-CT and quartz and a burrowed brown chert, consisting of radial aggregates of opal-CT with hollow centers, and (3) a chert that consists of silica-replaced calcite pseudospherules interspersed with streaks and circular masses of dense quartz. X-ray-diffraction analyses show that when data from all sites are considered there are poorly defined trends indicating that older cherts have better quartz crystallinity than younger ones, and that opal-CT crystallite size increases and opal-CT cf-spacings decrease with depth of occurrence in the sections. In a general way, depth of burial and the presence of calcite promote the ordering in the opal-CT crystal structure which allows its eventual conversion to quartz. Opal-CT in porcellanites converts to quartz after reaching a minimum d-spacing of 4.07 Å. Quartz/opal-CT ratios and quartz crystallinity vary randomly on a fine scale across four chert beds, but quartz crystallinity increases from the edge to the center of a fifth chert bed; this may indicate maturation of the silica. Twenty-four rocks were analyzed for their major- and minor-element compositions. Many elements in cherts are closely related to major mineral components. The carbonate component is distinguished by high values of CaO, MgO, Mn, Ba, Sr, and (for unknown reasons) Zr. Tuffaceous cherts have high values of K and Al, and commonly Zn, Mo, and Cr. Pure cherts are characterized by high SiO2 and B. High B may be a good indicator of formation of chert in an open marine environment, isolated from volcanic and terrigenous materials.

Primary production in water column (P_p) varied from 107 to 312 mg C/m**2/day in Yenisey Bay: from 25 to 63 mg C/m**2/day in Obskaya Guba: and from 20 to 359 mg C/m**2/day in the open sea, that is: in the western Kara Sea and Ob-Yenisey shoals. The average concentration of chlorophyll a in the photosynthesis layer (C_ph) ranged from 0.2 to 1.8 mg/m**3 in these two regions, lower than in the estuaries of Ob (1.6-21.7 mg/m**3) and Yenisey (2.0-5.2 mg/m**3) Rivers. An inverse relation between surface salinity (S) and chlorophyll concentration (C_s) and chlorophyll concentration in the photosynthesis layer was found for all of the regions. The highest values of C_s and C_ph (0.8-22 mg/m**3) were measured at S<10 ppt, and the lowest values (0.2-0.8 mg/m**3) at S>22 ppt. A similar correlation of S with values of Pp occurred only in the Yenisey Bay and offshore regions. Obtained results agree well with the "outwelling" hypothesis. It states that large part of organic matter produced in estuaries is not used in estuarine trophic chains but is transported into adjacent sea areas and increases their productivity. Low values of Pp in the study regions may be attributed to such unfavorable factors as deficiency in nutrients, low temperature and turbidity, and lack of solar radiation.

This database (Leemans & Cramer 1991) contains monthly averages of mean temperature, temperature range, precipitation, rain days and sunshine hours for the terrestrial surface of the globe, gridded at 0.5 degree longitude/latitude resolution. All grd-files contain the same 62483 pixels in the same order, with 30' latitude and longitude resolution. The coordinates are in degree-decimals and indicate the SW corner of each pixel. Topography is from ETOPO5 and indicates modal elevation. Data were generated from a large data base, using the partial thin-plate splining algorithm (Hutchinson & Bischof 1983). This version is widely used around the globe, notably by all groups participating in the IGBP NPP model intercomparison.

A large deposit of ferromanganese oxide coated sands and scattered manganese nodules occurs in the northern portion of Lake Ontario. The Mn and Fe contents of the concretions are similar to those in concretions from other environments, while their Ni, Cu, and Co contents are lower than in deep-sea nodules, but higher than in most previously described lacustrine concretions. Pb and Zn are high in the coatings and exceed the concentrations found in many previously analyzed Mn deposits. Within the deposit, Mn, Ni, Co, and Zn contents are correlated, and they vary inversely with Fe. Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Pb are present in the interstitial waters of the sediments underlying the deposit in higher concentrations than in the overlying lake waters, thus providing a potential source of metals for concretion formation.The origin and compositional variations in the deposit possibly can be explained in terms of the fractionation and precipitation of Fe and Mn as a result of redox variations in the lake sediments. Eh increases from south to north across the deposit in such a way that iron may be selectively oxidized and precipitated in the south and manganese, in the north. The upward diffusion of Mn, Fe, and associated elements from the underlying sediments probably provides the principal source of the metals in the south of the deposit, while metal-enriched bottom waters are probably the principal source in the north.

It is shown that due to desorption of mobile manganese, zinc and copper entered the bay with river suspended matter, their total contents in bottom sediments decrease and percentages of lithogenic forms increase. Contents and speciation of iron in bottom sediments are determined by its participation in coagulation of river colloids in the mixing zone and by mechanical differentiation of sedimentary material.

We investigated the impacts of predicted ocean acidification and future warming on the quantity and nutritional quality of a natural phytoplankton autumn bloom in a mesocosm experiment. Since the effects of CO2-enrichment and temperature have usually been studied independently, we were also interested in the interactive effects of both aspects of climate change. Therefore, we used a factorial design with two temperature and two acidification levels in a mesocosm experiment with a Baltic Sea phytoplankton community. Our results show a significant time-dependent influence of warming on phytoplankton carbon, chlorophyll a as well as POC. Phytoplankton carbon for instance decreased by more than a half with increasing temperature at bloom time. Additionally, elemental carbon to phosphorus ratios (C:P) increased significantly by approximately 5-8 % under warming. Impacts of CO2 or synergetic effects of warming and acidification could not be detected. We suggest that temperature-induced stronger grazing pressure was responsible for the significant decline in phytoplankton biomass. Our results suggest that biological effects of warming on Baltic Sea phytoplankton are considerable and will likely have fundamental consequences for the trophic transfer in the pelagic food-web.

The Curie temperature and thermomagnetic behavior of wholerock samples were measured in basalts recovered from Sites 442, 443, and 444 of DSDP Leg 58 in the Shikoku Basin, and from Site 446 in the Daito Basin, north Philippine Sea. Chemical composition and microscopic features of opaque oxides in the same samples were also investigated. Degree and mode of oxidation of titanomagnetite vary irrespective of site, lithology, or magnetic polarity, and no systematic correlation has been found between any two of these characteristics. Magnetic properties are systematically different between massive flows recovered at Hole 444A (Shikoku Basin) and Hole 446A (Daito Basin), although the controlling factor is unknown.

The first International Polar Year (IPY) was an international effort to perform continous meteorological and geophysical observations over a time period of two years (1882-1883). Eleven nations established twelve research stations in the Arctic along with thirteen auxilary stations. Two stations were operated on the southern hemisphere (South Georgia and Tierra del Fuego). The data were published in 26 volumes on 8700+ pages of reports, descriptions, tables and graphs in total. The list of meteorological parameters includes temperature, wind, pressure, clouds, precipitation, evaporation, humidity and radiation. In the light of Global Change and the intensification of observations and continous measurements in both polar regions, long-time series increase in importance. The observations of the first IPY from the 19th century enable us to extend the data from the 20th century even more back into the past. In the occasion of the fourth IPY (2007-2009) WDC-MARE decided to digitize the complete set of meteorological data in full hourly resolution and publish it in its reports and make it available in Open Access via the data library PANGAEA.

Forty sediment and four basement basalt samples from DSDP Hole 525A, Leg 74, as well as nine basalt samples from southern and offshore Brazil, were subjected to instrumental neutron activation analysis. Thirty-two major, minor, and trace elements were determined. The downcore element concentration profiles and regression analyses show that the rare earth elements (REE) are present in significant amounts in both the carbonate and noncarbonate phases in sediments; Sr is concentrated in the carbonate phase, and most of the other elements determined exist mainly in the noncarbonate phase. The calculated partition coefficients of the REE between the carbonate phase and the free ion concentrations in seawater are high and increase with decreasing REE ionic radii from 3.9 x 10**6 for La to 15 x 10**6 for Lu. Calculations show that the lanthanide concentrations in South Atlantic seawater have not been changed significantly over the past 70 Ma. The Ce anomaly observed in the carbonate phase is a redox indicator of ancient seawater. Study of the Ce anomaly reveals that seawater was anoxic over the Walvis Ridge during the late Campanian. As the gap between South America and West Africa widened and the Walvis Ridge subsided from late Campanian to late Paleocene times, the water circulation of the South Atlantic improved and achieved oxidation conditions about 54 Ma that are similar to present seawater redox conditions in the world oceans. The chemical compositions of the basement rocks correspond to alkalic basalts, not mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs). The results add more evidence to support the hypothesis that the Walvis Ridge was formed by a series of volcanos moving over a "hot spot" near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. From the chemical composition and REE pattern, one 112 Ma old basalt on the Brazilian continental shelf has been identified as an early stage MORB. To date, this is the oldest oceanic tholeiite recovered from the South Atlantic. This direct evidence indicates that the continental split between South America and Africa commenced > 112 Ma.

Delta180 and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic data from smectites, calcites, and whole rocks, together with published isotopic age determinations, alkali element concentration data and petrographic observations suggest a sequential model of ocean floor alteration. The early stage lasts about 3 m.y. and is characterized by palagonite and smectite formation, and solutions with a large basaltic component, increasing with temperature which varies from 15° to 80° C at DSDP site 418A. Most carbonates are deposited after this stage from solutions with a negligible basaltic Sr component and temperatures of 15° to 40° C. Water of seawater Sr and O isotopic composition is shown to percolate to at least 500 m into the basaltic basement. No evidence was found for continuing exchange of strontium or oxygen after 3 m.y.

Distributions of dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, and concentrations of dissolved silica, phosphates, strontium, calcium, fluorine, and boron in mouth areas of small rivers (Niva, Kolvitsa, Knyazhaya, and Keret') entering Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea were studied. Strontium, calcium, fluorine, and boron showed conservative, silica and phosphates showed non-conservative behavior caused by their biological consumption.
