While onboard ship during Leg 177, we used variations in sediment physical properties (mainly percent color reflectance) in conjunction with biomagnetostratigraphy to correlate among sites and predict the position of marine isotope stages (MISs) (e.g., see fig. F11 in Shipboard Scientific Party, 1999, p. 45). Our working assumption was that physical properties of Leg 177 sediments are controlled mainly by variations in carbonate content. Previous studies of Southern Ocean sediment cores have shown that carbonate concentrations are relatively high during interglacial stages and low during glacial stages at sites located within the Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ). Today, the PFZ marks a lithologic boundary in underlying sediment separating calcareous oozes to the north and silica-rich facies to the south (Hays et al., 1976). Although there is debate whether the position of the "physical" PFZ actually moved during glacial-interglacial cycles (Charles and Fairbanks, 1990; Matsumoto et al., 2001), the "biochemical" PFZ, as expressed by the CaCO3/opal boundary in sediments, certainly migrated north during glacials and south during interglacials. This gave rise to lithologic variations that are useful for stratigraphic correlation. At Leg 177 sites located north of the PFZ and at sublysoclinal depths, we expected the same pattern of carbonate variation because cores in the Atlantic basin are marked by increased carbonate dissolution during glacial periods and increased preservation during interglacials (Crowley, 1985).

We present the first study of the effects of ocean acidification on settlement of benthic invertebrates and microfauna. Artificial collectors were placed for 1 month along pH gradients at CO2 vents off Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Seventy-nine taxa were identified from six main taxonomic groups (foraminiferans, nematodes, polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans and chaetognaths). Calcareous foraminiferans, serpulid polychaetes, gastropods and bivalves showed highly significant reductions in recruitment to the collectors as pCO2 rose from normal (336-341 ppm, pH 8.09-8.15) to high levels (886-5,148 ppm) causing acidified conditions near the vents (pH 7.08-7.79). Only the syllid polychaete Syllis prolifera had higher abundances at the most acidified station, although a wide range of polychaetes and small crustaceans was able to settle and survive under these conditions. A few taxa (Amphiglena mediterranea, Leptochelia dubia, Caprella acanthifera) were particularly abundant at stations acidified by intermediate amounts of CO2 (pH 7.41-7.99). These results show that increased levels of CO2 can profoundly affect the settlement of a wide range of benthic organisms.

Among bivalves, scallops are exceptional due to their capacity to escape from predators by swimming which is provided by rapid and strong claps that are produced by the phasic muscle interspersed with tonic muscle contractions. Based on the concept of oxygen and capacity-limited thermal tolerance, the following hypothesis was tested: ocean warming and acidification (OWA) would induce disturbances in aerobic metabolic scope and extracellular acid-case status and impair swimming performance in temperate scallops. Following long-term incubation under near-future OWA scenarios [20 vs. 10 °C (control) and 0.112 kPa CO2 (hypercapnia) vs. 0.040 kPa CO2 (normocapnic control)], the clapping performance and metabolic rates (MR) were measured in resting (RMR) and fatigued (maximum MR) king scallops, Pecten maximus, from Roscoff, France. Exposure to OA, either alone or combined with warming, left MR and swimming parameters such as the total number of claps and clapping forces virtually unchanged. Only the duration of the escape response was affected by OA which caused earlier exhaustion in hyper- than in normocapnic scallops at 10 °C. While maximum MR was unaffected, warm exposure increased RMR in both normocapnic and hypercapnic P. maximus resulting in similar Q 10 values of ~2.2. The increased costs of maintenance and the observation of strongly reduced haemolymph PO2 levels indicate that at 20 °C scallops have reached the upper thermal pejus range with unbalanced capacities for aerobic energy metabolism. As a consequence, warming to 20 °C decreased mean phasic force during escape performance until fatigue. The observed prolonged recovery time in warm incubated scallops might be a consequence of elevated metabolic costs at reduced oxygen availability in the warmth.

Analyses of water samples taken by means of an in-hole sampler generally show good agreement with analyses of samples collected by routine shipboard squeezing techniques. At Sites 438 and 439, a decrease in salinity with depth is related to former freshwater flow from an aquifer that crops out at an anticline on a deep sea terrace between Japan and the top of the trench slope of the Japan Trench. This former subaerial recharge suggests significant late Cenozoic subsidence of the terrace, because it now lies at a water depth of 1500 meters. Samples from the trench slope at Site 440 have extremely high values of alkalinity and ammonia, presumably because of a favorable combination of high sedimentation rate and organic carbon content. Diagenetic conditions on the trench slope favor formation of the Fe-Mg carbonate mineral, ankerite; at Site 440 it first occurs at a depth below the sea floor of only 29 meters in late Pleistocene strata. Undissolved diatoms persist to relatively great depth at the sites of Leg 57 because of a low geothermal gradient caused by subduction. Secondary silica lepispheres first appear at 851 meters at the most landward and warmest site, Site 438, in strata 16 million years old with an ambient temperature of 31 °C.

Other than halite diagenesis and organic matter degradation, Cl- and Br- are considered to be conservative in marine pore fluids. Consequently, Br-/Cl- ratios should remain constant during most diagenetic reactions. Nonetheless, Br-/Cl- molar ratios decrease to 0.00127 (~18% less than seawater value) in pore fluids from Site 833 in the Aoba Basin of the New Hebrides convergent margin despite the lack of halite diagenesis and little organic matter. Sediment at this site is largely volcanic ash, which becomes hydrated with depth as it converts to clay and zeolite minerals. These hydration reactions remove sufficient water to increase the concentrations of most solutes including Cl- and Br-. The resulting concentration gradients drive diffusion, but calculations indicate that diffusion does not decrease the Br-/Cl- ratio. Some Cl- may be leached from the ash, but insufficient amounts are available to cause the observed decrease in Br-/Cl- ratio. The limited source of Cl- suggests that proportionately more Br- than Cl- is lost from the fluids to the diagenetic solids. Similar nonconservative behavior of Cl- and Br- may occur during fluid circulation at ridge crests and flanks, thereby influencing the halide distribution in the crust.

Oceanic authigenic carbonates are classified according to origin of the carbonate carbon source using a complex methodology that includes methods of sedimentary petrography, mineralogy, isotope geochemistry, and microbiology. Mg-calcite (protodolomite) and aragonite predominate among the authigenic carbonates. All authigenic carbonates are depleted in 13C and enriched in 18O (in PDB system) that indicates biological fractionation of isotopes during carbonate formation. Obtained results show that authigenic carbonate formation is a biogeochemical (microbial) process, which involves carbon from ancient sedimentary rocks, abiogenic methane, and bicarbonate-ion of hydrothermal fluids into the modern carbon cycle.

Concentrations of organic and mineral nitrogen and phosphorus in waters from different types of bays were determined during summer of 1987. Content of organic nitrogen in surface waters reached 80-97% of total; content of mineral phosphorus was 60-100%. Concentrations of N_org and P_org in deep waters decreased to 70 and 40%, respectively. Distribution of organic matter in the bays was controlled by river run-off.
