During Leg 110 of the Ocean Drilling Program, sediment was recovered from six sites in the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles Forearc. Hole 671B, drilled near the toe of the Barbados deformation front, was the first-ever penetration of the decollement between the underthrusting Atlantic Plate and the off scraped Barbados accretionary prism. Stratigraphic repetitions in sequence associated with tectonic movement along the decollement zone, first observed on DSDP Leg 78A, were further documented at four ODP Leg 110 sites. A significant biostratigraphic inversion is present at Site 671 at 128 mbsf in which upper Miocene sediments rest atop lower Pleistocene strata. Smaller repetitions in sequence are recorded at Sites 671, 673, 674, and 676. Leg 110 sediments range from middle Eocene to early Pleistocene in age. Pliocene/Pleistocene assemblages are generally well preserved; however, Miocene assemblages have undergone extensive dissolution at all Leg 110 sites. Paleogene sediments are sometimes recrystallized and the nannofossils contained within exhibit a range in preservation from poor to good.

At present time, there is a lack of knowledge on the interannual climate-related variability of zooplankton communities of the tropical Atlantic, central Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, and Aral Sea, due to the absence of appropriate databases. In the mid latitudes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric fluctuations over eastern North America, the northern Atlantic Ocean and Europe. Therefore, one of the issues that need to be addressed through data synthesis is the evaluation of interannual patterns in species abundance and species diversity over these regions in regard to the NAO. The database has been used to investigate the ecological role of the NAO in interannual variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass along the zonal array of the NAO influence. Basic approach to the proposed research involved: (1) development of co-operation between experts and data holders in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, UK, and USA to rescue and compile the oceanographic data sets and release them on CD-ROM, (2) organization and compilation of a database based on FSU cruises to the above regions, (3) analysis of the basin-scale interannual variability of the zooplankton species abundance, biomass, and species diversity.

In the collective monograph results of geological and geophysical studies in the Tadjura Rift carried out by conventional outboard instruments and from deep/sea manned submersibles "Pisces" in winter 1983-1984 are reported. Main features of rift tectonics, geology, petrology, and geochemistry of basalts from the rift are under consideration. An emphasis is made on lithology, stratigraphy, and geochemistry of bottom sediments. Roles of terrigenous, edafogenic, biogenic, and hydrothermal components in formation of bottom sediments from the rift zone are shown.

Vast areas on the Tibetan Plateau are covered by alpine sedge mats consisting of different species of the genus Kobresia. These mats have topsoil horizons rich in rhizogenic organic matter which creates turfs. As the turfs have recently been affected by a complex destruction process, knowledge concerning their soil properties, age and pedogenesis are needed. In the core area of Kobresia pygmaea mats around Nagqu (central Tibetan Plateau, ca. 4500 m a.s.l.), four profiles were subjected to pedological, paleobotanical and geochronological analyses concentrating on soil properties, phytogenic composition and dating of the turf. The turf of both dry K. pygmaea sites and wet Kobresia schoenoides sites is characterised by an enrichment of living (dominant portion) and dead root biomass. In terms of humus forms, K. pygmaea turfs can be classified as Rhizomulls mainly developed from Cambisols. Wet-site K. schoenoides turfs, however, can be classified as Rhizo-Hydromors developed from Histic Gleysols. At the dry sites studied, the turnover of soil organic matter is controlled by a non-permafrost cold thermal regime. Below-ground remains from sedges are the most frequent macroremains in the turf. Only a few pollen types of vascular plants occur, predominantly originating from sedges and grasses. Large amounts of microscopic charcoal (indeterminate) are present. Macroremains and pollen extracted from the turfs predominantly have negative AMS 14C ages, giving evidence of a modern turf genesis. Bulk-soil datings from the lowermost part of the turfs have a Late Holocene age comprising the last ca. 2000 years. The development of K. pygmaea turfs was most probably caused by an anthropo(zoo)-genetically initiated growth of sedge mats replacing former grass-dominated vegetation ('steppe'). Thus the turfs result from the transformation of pre-existing topsoils comprising a secondary penetration and accumulation of roots. K. schoenoides turfs, however, are characterised by a combined process of peat formation and penetration/accumulation of roots probably representing a (quasi) natural wetland vegetation.

Seven sites were drilled off the eastern shore of New Zealand during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 181 to gain knowledge of southwest Pacific ocean history, in particular, the evolution of the Pacific Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). Holes 1123C and 1124C penetrated lower Oligocene to middle Eocene sediments containing moderately to poorly preserved calcareous nannofossils. Nannofossil assemblages show signs of dissolution and overgrowth, but key marker species can be identified. Nannofossil abundance ranges from abundant to barren. The lower Oligocene sediments are distinctly separated from the overlying Neogene sequences by the Marshall Paraconformity, a regional marker of environmental and sea level change. An age-depth model for Hole 1123C through this sequence was constructed using nine nannofossil age datums and three magnetostratigraphic datums. There is good agreement between the biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy, which indicates that the Marshall Paraconformity spans ~12 m.y. in Hole 1123C. The same sequence in Hole 1124C is disrupted by at least three hiatuses, complicating interpretation of the sedimentation history. The Marshall Paraconformity spans at least 3 m.y. in Hole 1124C. A 4- m.y. gap separates lower Oligocene and middle Eocene sediments, and a ~15 m.y. hiatus separates middle Eocene mudstones from middle Paleocene nannofossil-bearing mudstones. Nannofossil biostratigraphy from Holes 1123C and 1124C indicates that the Eocene-Oligocene transition was a time of fluctuating biota and intensification of the DWBC along the New Zealand margin.

NW African climate shows orbital and millenial-scale variations, which are tightly connected to changes in marine productivity. We present an organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) record from a sediment core off Cape Yubi at about 27°N in the Canary Basin covering the time period from 47 to 3ka before present (BP). The dinocyst record reflects differences in upwelling intensity and seasonality as well as the influence of fluvial input. Sea-level changes play an important role for the upwelling pattern and productivity signals at the core site. Within the studied time interval, four main phases were distinguished. (1) From 45 to 24ka BP, when sea-level was mostly about 75m lower than today, high relative abundances of cysts of heterotrophic taxa point to enhanced upwelling activity, especially during Heinrich Events, while relatively low dinocyst accumulation rates indicate that filament activity at the core location was strongly reduced. (2) At sea-level lowstand during the LGM to H1, dinocyst accumulation rates suggest that local filament formation was even more inhibited. (3) From the early Holocene to about 8ka BP, extraordinary high accumulation rates of most dinocyst species, especially of Lingulodinium machaerophorum, suggest that nutrient supply via fluvial input increased and rising sea-level promoted filament formation. At the same time, the upwelling season prolongated. (4) A relative increase in cysts of photoautotrophic taxa from about 8ka BP on indicates more stratified conditions while fluvial input decreased. Our study shows that productivity records can be very sensitive to regional features. From the dinocyst data we infer that marine surface productivity off Cape Yubi during glacial times was within the scale of modern times but extremely enhanced during deglaciation.
