The NA64-Mesozooplankton dataset contains biogeochemistry and mesozooplankton data collected in a series of 9 cruises in the Northern Adriatic completed from January 1965 to September 1965 monthly, and December 1965. Biogeochemistry sampling was undertaken using 5L Nansen bottles fired at 0m, 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m and/or bottom depths. The dataset includes 709 samples analysed for nitrate, phosphate, temperature, salinity and density. Mesozooplankton sampling was undertaken at the same locations as for biogeochemistry, using two different net (Hensen non-closing and Appstein closing net). The dataset includes 146 samples analysed for mesozooplankton composition (at higher taxonomic level), abundance and volume settlement. After sedimentation and volume measurement, the fish larva and fish eggs were extracted from samples (egss of Engraulis encrasicholus were determined). Chaetognaths were partly isolated. Identification at higher taxonomic level of zooplankters was completed. Taxonomic identification was done at Smithonian Mediterranean Centre in Salambo. Sampling was conducted from March 24 to August 5 2010, in the fjord branch Kapisigdlit located in the inner part of the Godthåbsfjord system, West Greenland. The vessel "Lille Masik" was used during all cruises except on June 17-18 where sampling was done from RV Dana (National Institute for Aquatic Resources, Denmark). A total of 15 cruises (of 1-2 days duration) 7-10 days apart was carried out along a transect composed of 6 stations (St.), spanning the length of the 26 km long fjord branch. St. 1 was located at the mouth of the fjord branch and St. 6 was located at the end of the fjord branch, in the middle of a shallower inner creek . St. 1-4 was covering deeper parts of the fjord, and St. 5 was located on the slope leading up to the shallow inner creek. Mesozooplankton was sampled by vertical net tows using a Hydrobios Multinet (type Mini) equipped with a flow meter and 50 µm mesh nets or a WP-2 net 50 µm mesh size equipped with a non-filtering cod-end. Sampling was conducted at various times of day at the different stations. The nets were hauled with a speed of 0.2-0.3 m s**-1 from 100, 75 and 50 m depth to the surface at St. 2 + 4, 5 and 6, respectively. The content was immediately preserved in buffered formalin (4% final concentration). All samples were analyzed in the Plankton sorting and identification center in Szczecin (www.nmfri.gdynia.pl). Samples containing high numbers of zooplankton were split into subsamples. All copepods and other zooplankton were identified down to lowest possible taxonomic level (approx. 400 per sample), length measured and counted. Copepods were sorted into development stages (nauplii stage 1 - copepodite stage 6) using morphological features and sizes, and up to 10 individuals of each stage was length measured.

Magnetic iron minerals are widespread and indicative sediment constituents in estuarine, coastal and shelf systems. We combine environmental magnetic, sedimentological and numerical methods to identify magnetite-enriched placer-like zones in a complex coastal system and delineate their formation mechanisms. Magnetic susceptibility and remanence measurements on 245 surficial sediment samples collected in and around Tauranga Harbour, the largest barrier-enclosed tidal estuary of New Zealand, reveal several discrete enrichment zones controlled by local hydrodynamic conditions. Active magnetite enrichment takes place in tidal channels, which feed into two coast-parallel nearshore magnetite-enriched belts centered at water depths of 6-10 m and 10-20 m. A close correlation between magnetite content and magnetic grain size was found, where higher susceptibility values are associated within coarser magnetic crystal sizes. Two key mechanisms for magnetite enrichment are identified. First, tide-induced residual currents primarily enable magnetite enrichment within the estuarine channel network. A coast-parallel, fine sand magnetite enrichment belt in water depths of less than 10 m along the barrier island has a strong decrease in magnetite content away from the southern tidal inlet and is apparently related to active coast-parallel transport combined with mobilizing surf zone processes. A second, less pronounced, but more uniform magnetite enrichment belt at 10-20 m water depth is composed of non-mobile, medium-coarse-grained relict sands, which have been reworked during post-glacial sea level transgression. We demonstrate the potential of magnetic methods to reveal and differentiate coastal magnetite enrichment patterns and investigate their formative mechanisms.

The terrigenous fraction of sediments from a deep-sea sediment core recovered from the northwestern Western Australian continental slope offshore North West Cape, SE Indian Ocean, reveals a history of Western Australian climate throughout the last 550 ka. End-member modelling of a data set of grain-size distributions (n = 438) of the terrigenous sediment fraction allows to interpret the record in terms of aeolian and fluvial sediment deposition, both related to palaeo-environmental conditions in the North West Cape area. The data set can be best described by two aeolian end members and one fluvial one. Changes in the ratio of the two aeolian end members over the fluvial one are interpreted as aridity variations in northwestern Western Australia. These grain-size data are compared with bulk geochemical data obtained by XRF scans of the core. Log-ratios of the elements Zr/Fe and Ti/Ca, which indicate a terrigenous origin, corroborate the grain-size data. We postulate that the mid- to late Quaternary near North West Cape climate was relatively arid during the glacial and relatively humid during the interglacial stages, owing to meridional shifts in the atmospheric circulation system. Opposite to published palaeo-environmental records from the same latitude (20°S) offshore Chile and offshore Namibia, the Australian aridity record does not show the typical southern hemisphere climate variability of humid glacials and dry interglacials, which we interpret to be the result of the relatively large land mass of the Australian continent, which emphasises a strong monsoonal climatic system.

As a part of the Russian-German project "Siberian River-Runoff (SIRRO)" the major element composition of the dissolved load and the major and trace element composition of particulate load and bottom sediment of the Yenisei River and Estuary were analyzed and examined in context of the basin lithology and climate. In addition, the processes controlling the transformation of the river load in the estuarine mixing zone were investigated. The chemical composition of the dissolved and particulate load of the Yenisei fluvial endmember is generally comparable to that of other major world rivers. The dissolved load is chiefly controlled by carbonate weathering and the chemical composition of the river suspended particulate matter (SPM) is similar to that of the North American Shale Composite (NASC), which represents the weathering product of the upper continental crust. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of the Yenisei SPM amounts to 71, which indicates moderate chemical weathering. With regard to the SPM geochemistry, the Yenisei occupies an intermediate position between the adjacent rivers Khatanga and the Lena. Drastic changes in the composition of the river load are seen in the mixing zone between fresh and salt water. While dissolved Na, Ca, Mg, K, CI, S04, F, Br, Sr and HC03 behave conservatively, dissolved Fe is completely removed from solution at very low salinities. Particulate Mn exhibits a pronounced mid-salinity minimum concomitant with a maximum of dissolved Mn, which is probably related to suboxic conditions in the area of the so-called "marginal filter", where highest turbidities are found. The Mn-minimum in SPM is paralleled by depletions of the elements Ba, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu and V, which can be associated with manganese particles. The estuarine bottom sediments are composed of mud and sand and the sedimentological parameters of the bottom sediments have to be considered for the interpretation of the bulk geochemical data. The chemical composition of the mud is comparable to the SPM, whereas the sand is relatively enriched in Si/Al, Ba/Al, Zr/Al and Sr/Al ratios and depleted in transition metals.
