A unique set of geochemical pore-water data, characterizing the sulfate reduction and uppermost methanogenic zones, has been collected at the Blake Ridge (offshore southeastern North America) from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 cores and piston cores. The d13C values of dissolved CO2 (sum CO2) are as 13C-depleted as -37.7 per mil PDB (Site 995) at the sulfate-methane interface, reflecting a substantial contribution of isotopically light carbon from methane. Although the geochemical system is complex and difficult to fully quantify, we use two methods to constrain and illustrate the intensity of anaerobic methane oxidation in Blake Ridge sediments. An estimate using a two-component mixing model suggests that ~24% of the carbon residing in the sum CO2 pool is derived from biogenic methane. Independent diagenetic modeling of a methane concentration profile (Site 995) indicates that peak methane oxidation rates approach 0.005 µmol/cm**3/yr, and that anaerobic methane oxidation is responsible for consuming ~35% of the total sulfate flux into the sediments. Thus, anaerobic methane oxidation is a significant biogeochemical sink for sulfate, and must affect interstitial sulfate concentrations and sulfate gradients. Such high proportions of sulfate depletion because of anaerobic methane oxidation are largely undocumented in continental rise sediments with overlying oxic bottom waters. We infer that the additional amount of sulfate depleted through anaerobic methane oxidation, fueled by methane flux from below, causes steeper sulfate gradients above methane-rich sediments. Similar pore water chemistries should occur at other methane-rich, continental-rise settings associated with gas hydrates.

An estimate of rate of transformation of organic matter and regeneration of nutrients (in particular phosphorus) was calculated for different regions of the Sea of Okhotsk. The rate was estimated by means of rate of complete oxidation of organic matter to CO2 and H2O catalyzed by enzymes of the electron transport system (ETS) and rate of hydrolytic splitting of phosphate from organic phosphorus compounds catalyzed by alkaline phosphatase. Organic matter destruction rate was at its maximum on the shelf of Kamchatka and Sakhalin, as well as in the layer of maximum oxygen gradients in deep waters. It was found that zones of intensive primary production were characterized by high rates of phosphorus regeneration, which provided for 80% of primary production when concentration of mineral phosphorus was low.

Dark gray laminated silty claystones (Unit II) drilled at Site 901 contain Tithonian benthic foraminifer assemblages that indicate a neritic depositional environment and probably dysaerobic bottom-water conditions. Three benthic foraminifer zones are distinguished within Unit II. The upper part of the unit is dominated by Spirillina polygyrata, contains Globospirillina spp. (Samples 149-901A-3R-1, 10-12 cm, to 149-901A-3R-1, 75-77 cm) and is interpreted as late Tithonian. Samples 149-901A-3R-1, 87-89 cm, to 149-901A-6R-1, 74-76 cm, contain Epistomina uhligi and Lingulina franconica and are probably early Tithonian. The early Tithonian Neobulimina atlantica Zone is characterized by the occurrence of the zonal marker and Epistomina uhligi and reaches from Sample 149-901A-6R-1, 128-130 cm, to the base of the drilled-sequence. The sediments and benthic foraminiferal assemblage characteristics of the Tithonian-aged sequence in Hole 901A are unknown elsewhere in the Atlantic and may represent deposition in a marginal shelf basin with increased terrigenous and organic flux.

Sites 1146 and 1148 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 184, in the South China Sea (SCS), comprise long sediment sections with a time span from the early Oligocene to the Pleistocene. Calcareous nannofossils from these two sites were biostratigraphically studied. We recognized 53 early Oligocene to Pleistocene events that are commonly found in open sea areas and can therefore be correlated within a large geographic range. This study also revealed that a few conventionally used nannofossil events are not suitable for the SCS, and further evaluation is needed. The lower Oligocene to Pleistocene sequences recovered at Sites 1146 and 1148 were subdivided into the 4 Paleogene zones and 21 Neogene to Quaternary zones of Martini, in correlation with the Paleogene to Quaternary zones of Okada and Bukry. This provided a lower Oligocene through Pleistocene nannofossil biostratigraphic framework. A significant unconformity was recognized in the Oligocene-Miocene transition, in which the upper part of Oligocene Zone NP25 and lower part of Miocene Zone NN1 were missing. The time span of the unconformity was estimated to be ~1 m.y. Very high sedimentation rates were seen in the Oligocene, relative low values were seen in the Miocene, and the highest values were seen in the Pleistocene, which was believed to be the result of tectonic and sedimentation history of the SCS.

After death of benthic and planktic foraminifera their tests intensive dissolve in sediments of the upper sublittoral zone (depth 30-60 m) in the highest productivity area of surface water in the northern Peruvian region. Dissolution of fine pelitic ooze is more intensive than of sandy sediments. Rate of dissolution is lower in the lower sublittoral zone (60-200 m) than in the upper part of the zone. Within the upper bathyal zone (300-500 m) dissolution decreases and results to accumulation of carbonate test in this zone. Benthic tests are more abundant than planktic ones. Very poor species composition and a peculiar set of species are characteristic of foraminiferal assemblages found in the sublittoral and upper bathyal zones along the Peruvian coast.

Chemical composition of the upper layer of sediments (0-1 cm) in the Kolvits and Knazhaya inlets, and also in the deep-water part of the Kandalaksha Bay is considered. It is shown that silts are richer in Fe, TOC, and heavy metals, than sands. The highest concentration of these elements is found in sediments under mixing zones of riverine and sea waters. Correlations of P, Zn, Cd, and Cu with iron are high, and correlations of Pb and Cu with organic carbon are also high. Very high concentration of Pb in the Kandalaksha Bay indicate technogenic pollution of sediments. Lignin makes significant contribution to formation of organic matter in the sediments. Composition of lignin in bottom sediments of the Kandalaksha Bay is defined by composition of lignin in soils and aerosols. Vanillin and syringyl structures prevail in molecular composition of lignin in bottom sediments. Their sources are coniferous vegetations, soils, and mosses. Ratios of certain types of phenol compounds indicate pollution of the upper layer of sediments by technogenic lignin. Lead and copper correlate well with this technogenic lignin.

Based on organic carbon accumulation rates, nine time slices of oceanic export paleoproductivity (Pnew) are presented which depict the variability of Pnew on a global scale through the last 30,000 years and document that the basic distribution patterns did not change through glacial and interglacial times. However, the glacial ocean shows an increased contrast of high- versus low-productivity zones. d13C values of near-surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber suggest that the same contrast applies to the glacial nutrient inventories of the ambient surface waters, with a significant glacial transfer of PO4 from low- to high-productivity zones. In this way, glacial Pnew increased by a global average of about 2-4 Gt C/yr and led, via an enhanced CaCO3 dissolution and alkalinity in the deep ocean, to a significant extraction of CO2 from the surface water and the atrnosphere.

In fault zones of the East Indian Ridge and adjacent areas of ocean floor almost monomineral sepiolite- and palygorskite clays have been found. They have been studied by a complex of optical and physical methods. Formation of authigenic sepiolites and palygorskite had occurred under influence of Mg- and Si-rich hydrothermal solutions by metasomatic replacement of montmorillonite clays, or by precipitation from saturated solutions in cracks of various rocks.
