During ODP Leg 119 one basement hole was drilled at Site 738, on the Southern Kerguelen Plateau. The 38.2 m of basement rocks drilled comprises three basaltic aa-lava flows with basal and top breccias, overlain by Turanian marine carbonates. Site 738 basalts probably erupted near a fracture zone, and were emplaced during the plateau-forming stage of Kerguelen Plateau evolution under quiet, subaerial to shallow water conditions. The basalts are T-MORB, chemically resembling Mesozoic continental flood basalts of the southern hemisphere. Two slightly different magma batches are distinguished by Fe, Ti, Al, Zr, and REE concentrations. Prior to eruption, the magmas had undergone significant olivine and some clinopyroxene fractionation. Incompatible and immobile trace element concentrations and ratios point to a veined upper mantle source, where a refractory mineral assemblage retains Nb, Ta, and the HREE. The basaltic melts derived from this regionally veined, enriched upper mantle have high LREE, and especially Ba and Th concentrations and bear the DUPAL isotopic signature gained from deep- seated, recycled, old oceanic(?) crust. A saponite-celadonite secondary mineral assemblage confines the alteration temperature to <170°C. Alteration is accompanied by net gains of H2O, CO2, K2O, and Rb, higher oxidation, minor Na2O, SiO2 gains, and losses of V and CaO. Released Ca, together with Ca from seawater, precipitated as calcite in veins and vesicles, plumbed the circulation system and terminated the rock/open seawater interaction.

The chemical composition of glass inclusions in phenocrystic plagioclase and pyroxene from Sites 792 and 793, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126 in the Bonin Arc, is examined. Immiscible liquid, which is preserved as glass inclusions with unmixed textures in plagioclase, is observed in a high-magnesian andesite, which suggests an important role of liquid immiscibility in the fractionation of high-magnesian andesite. In other andesitic rocks (SiO2 = 57-60 wt%), such unmixed textures of glass inclusions in calcic plagioclase with a similar percentage of An (around 80%) is not found. The degree of fractionation and mixing of liquid are inferred from the glass composition in pyroxene.

The foraging distributions of 20 breeding emperor penguins were investigated at Pointe Géologie, Terre Adélie, Antarctica by using satellite telemetry in 2005 and 2006 during early and late winter, as well as during late spring and summer, corresponding to incubation, early chick-brooding, late chick-rearing and the adult pre-moult period, respectively. Dive depth records of three post-egg-laying females, two post-incubating males and four late chick-rearing adults were examined, as well as the horizontal space use by these birds. Foraging ranges of chick-provisioning penguins extended over the Antarctic shelf and were constricted by winter pack-ice. During spring ice break-up, the foraging ranges rarely exceeded the shelf slope, although seawater access was apparently almost unlimited. Winter females appeared constrained in their access to open water but used fissures in the sea ice and expanded their prey search effort by expanding the horizontal search component underwater. Birds in spring however, showed higher area-restricted-search than did birds in winter. Despite different seasonal foraging strategies, chick-rearing penguins exploited similar areas as indicated by both a high 'Area-Restricted-Search Index' and high 'Catch Per Unit Effort'. During pre-moult trips, emperor penguins ranged much farther offshore than breeding birds, which argues for particularly profitable oceanic feeding areas which can be exploited when the time constraints imposed by having to return to a central place to provision the chick no longer apply.

The Izu-Bonin forearc basement volcanic rocks recovered from Holes 792E and 793B show the same phenocrystic assemblage (i.e., plagioclase, two pyroxenes, and Fe-Ti oxides ±olivine), but they differ in the crystallization sequence and their phenocryst chemistry. All the igneous rocks have suffered low-grade hydrothermal alteration caused by interaction with seawater. As a result, only clinopyroxenes, plagioclases, and oxides have preserved their primary igneous compositions. The Neogene olivine-clinopyroxene diabasic intrusion (Unit II) recovered from Hole 793B differs from the basement basaltic andesites because it lacks Cr-spinels and contains abundant titanomagnetites (Usp38.5-46.4) and uncommon FeO-rich (FeO = 29%) spinels. It displays petrological and geochemical similarities to the Izu Arc volcanoes and, thus, can be considered as related to Izu-Bonin Arc magmatic activity. The titanomagnetites (Usp28.5-33) in the calc-alkaline andesitic fragments of the Oligocene volcaniclastic breccia in Hole 793B (Unit VI) represent an early crystallization phase. The Plagioclase phenocrysts enclosed in these rocks show oscillatory zoning and are less Ca-rich (An78.6-67.8) than the plagioclase phenocrysts of the diabase sill and the basement basaltic andesites. Their clinopyroxenes are Fe-rich augites (Fs ? 19.4; FeO = 12%) and thus, differ significantly from the clinopyroxenes of the Hole 793B arc-tholeiitic igneous rocks. The 30-32 Ma porphyritic, two-pyroxene andesites recovered from Hole 792E are very similar to the andesitic clasts of the Neogene breccia recovered in Hole 793B (Unit VI). Both rocks have the same crystallization sequence, and similar chemistry of the Fe-Ti oxides, clinopyroxenes, and plagioclases: that is, Ti-rich (Usp25.5-30.4) magnetites, Fe-rich augites, and intensely oscillatory zoned plagioclases with bytownitic cores (An86-63) and labradorite rims (An73-68). They display a calc-alkaline differentiation trend (Taylor et al., this volume). So, the basement highly porphyritic andesites recovered at Hole 792E, and the Hole 793B andesitic clasts of Unit VI show the same petrological and geochemical characteristics, which are that of calc-alkaline suites. These Oligocene volcanic rocks represent likely the remnants of the Izu-Bonin normal arc magmatic activity, before the forearc rifting and extension. The crystallization sequence in the basaltic andesites recovered from Hole 793B is olivine-orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-plagioclase-Fe-Ti oxides, indicating a tholeiitic differentiation trend for these volcanic rocks. Type i is an olivine-and Cr-spinel bearing basaltic andesite whereas Type ii is a porphyritic pyroxene-rich basaltic andesite. The porphyritic plagioclase-rich basaltic andesite (Type iii) is similar, in most respects, to Type ii lavas but contains plagioclase phenocrysts. The last, and least common lava is an aphyric to sparsely phyric andesite (Type iv). Cr-spinels, included either in the olivine pseudomorphs of Type i lavas or in the groundmass of Type ii lavas, are Cr-rich and Mg-rich. In contrast, Cr-spinels included in clinopyroxenes and orthopyroxenes (Types i and ii lavas) show lower Cr* and Mg* ratios and higher aluminium contents. Orthopyroxenes from all rock types are Mg-rich enstatites. Clinopyroxenes display endiopsidic to augitic compositions and are TiO2 and Al2O3 depleted. All the crystals exhibit strong zoning patterns, usually normal, although, reverse zoning patterns are not uncommon. The plagioclases show compositions within the range of An90-64. The Fe-Ti oxides of the groundmass are TiO2-poor (Usp16-17). The Hole 793B basaltic andesites show, like the Site 458 bronzites from the Mariana forearc, intermediate features between arc tholeiites and boninites: (1) Cr-spinel in olivine, (2) presence of Mg-rich bronzite, Ca-Mg-rich clinopyroxenes, and Ca-plagioclase phenocrysts, and (3) transitional trace element depletion and epsioln-Nd ratios between arc tholeiites and boninites. Thus, the forearc magmatism of the Izu-Bonin and Mariana arcs, linked to rifting and extension, is represented by a depleted tholeiitic suite that displays boninitic affinities.

Data and observation from Drifting Program Leg 121 and plate-tectonic reconstructions indicate that the Ninetyeast Ridge (Indian Ocean) was derived from the interaction of a deep-seated Dupal hotspot and a nearby spreading-ridge axis. The 5000-km-long ridge, from lat 34°S to lat 10°N, was drilled at three sites during Leg 121. About 178 m of basalt, >38 to >80 Ma, were recovered from a total penetration of ~310 m. Shipboard petrographic and geochemical studies showed that each site has distinctive characteristics. Most of the cored lavas have a tholeiitic basalt composition. Incompatible-element abundanes and ratios show systematic trends, consistent with an origin for the Ninetyeast Ridge lavas by mixing between a depleted component-Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge basalt-and an enriched component-oceanic-island basalt similar to that observed in the youngest alkalic basalts from the Kerguelen archipelago. Preliminary shore-based trace element abundance and isotopic data are compatible with this hypothesis, although Pb isotopes indicate the involvement of another component. The long-lasting and more or less continuous activity of the Kerguelen-Heard plume (ca. 115 Ma), now located under Heard Island, south of the Southeast Indian Ridge, provides evidence that the source of the Dupal anomaly is deep seated.

During Leg 125, two serpentinite seamounts were drilled in the Mariana and Izu-Ogasawara forearcs. Together with abundant serpentinized peridotites, low-grade metamorphic rocks were recovered from both seamounts. The metamorphic rocks obtained from Hole 778A on Conical Seamount on the Mariana forearc contain common blueschist facies minerals, lawsonite, aragonite, blue amphibole, and sodic pyroxene. Approximate metamorphic conditions of these rocks are 150° to 250° C and 5 to 6 kb. These rocks are considered to have been uplifted by diapirism of serpentinite from a deeper portion within the subduction zone. This discovery presents direct evidence that blueschist facies metamorphism actually takes place within a subduction zone and provides new insight about trench-forearc tectonics. The diagnostic mineral assemblage of the metamorphic rocks from Holes 783A and 784A on Torishima Forearc Seamount, in the Izu-Ogasawara region, is actinolite + prehnite + epidote, with a subassemblage of chlorite + quartz + albite + H2O, which is typical of low-pressure type, prehnite-actinolite facies of Liou et al. (1985). This metamorphism may represent ocean-floor metamorphism within trapped oceanic crust or in-situ metamorphism that occurred at depths beneath the island-arc.

We carried out an experiment to estimate in-situ stresses at ODP Hole 794C (water depth: 2809 m) from the basaltic core samples by deformation rate analysis (DRA). Site 794 is located at the northern end of the Yamato Basin and 70 km west of the eastern Japan Sea intraplate or interplate convergent zone. Stress previously applied to a rock specimen is identified in the inelastic strain behavior of the specimen under uniaxial compression by the method used. Natural remanent magnetization of the sample was also measured to get a reference for the orientation of the horizontal stresses. The vertical, maximum, and minimum horizontal in-situ stresses estimated at a depth of 582 mbsf are 36.4, 43.1, and 31.2 MPa, respectively. The average of the largest and the least horizontal stresses is nearly equal in value to the vertical stress. This suggests that the site is in the stress field of the strike slip regime at the depth, while the stress field of the reverse fault regime has been estimated from the focal mechanism solutions of the earthquakes whose hypocenters are located near or on the convergent boundary. The directions of the largest and the least horizontal stress are estimated to be northeast-southwest and in northwest-southeast, respectively, in taking account of rotation tectonics of the Japan Sea since its formation. The directions of the largest and the least horizontal stresses are opposite to those determined from the earthquakes. These discrepancies of our results with those from earthquakes may be due mainly to the fact that the site is not in the convergent zone.

The amount of energy that organisms can allocate to self-maintenance and/or reproduction largely depends on their foraging strategies. Because of corticosterone (CORT) involvement in the control of energy metabolism, food intake and locomotor activity, recent studies have sought to demonstrate the role of this hormone in foraging decisions and performance. Moreover, considerable recent advances in animal-attached loggers now allow the study of behaviour in free-living animals. In order to assess the effects of CORT administration on the foraging behaviour of free-living Adelie Penguins Pygoscelis adeliae, we studied a group with CORT implants and a control group without CORT implants, by attaching time-depth recorders to the two groups and monitoring them throughout up to seven consecutive foraging trips during the guard stage (in Adelie Land, Antarctica). We found that foraging trips duration was similar between both groups. Dive durations, time spent at the bottom phase of dives, and the number of undulations per dive of CORT-implanted birds were all significantly higher than those of controls. However, CORT-implanted birds performed fewer dives overall (ca. 4,400) than controls (ca. 6,250) and spent many (13 and 6 times for penguins #3 and #4, respectively) long periods (>3 h) without diving. The low foraging effort and long resting periods support the view that CORT-implanted birds probably gained less energy than did the control birds. CORT treatment appears then to result in redirecting bird behaviour from costly activity (i.e. reproduction) to a behaviour promoting the preservation of energy reserves. Future studies are therefore needed to assess body condition and reproductive success of CORT-manipulated birds in parallel with the recording of their diving performances.
