Lower Campanian to middle Eocene chalks and oozes were recovered at Sites 761 and 762 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 122 on the Exmouth Plateau, northwest Australia. Paleomagnetic analyses were made on 125 samples from Hole 761B and 367 samples from Hole 762C. Thermal cleaning, alternating field demagnetization, or mixed treatment reveals a stable remanent component of normal or reversed polarity. Correlation of the magnetic polarity sequences established for these holes with the standard magnetic polarity time scale was aided by nannofossil zonation. At Hole 761B, the sequence extends from Subchron C32-N (upper Campanian) through Subchron C17-R (middle Eocene), but given the low sedimentation rate, not all the subchrons of the standard magnetic polarity sequence were recognized. The sequence at Hole 762C extends from Subchron C13-R (middle Eocene) to the boundary between Chrons C33 and C34 (lower Campanian). The sedimentation rate is higher at Hole 762C, and all the magnetic polarity subchrons of the Campanian and Maestrichtian stages were identified. Thus, this hole could be a reference section to refine the Upper Cretaceous time scale.

Organic geochemical data of Lower Cretaceous shallow water sediments from two sites (865 and 866) drilled during ODP leg 143 are presented. The organic matter is mainly terrestrial at the bottom of the sedimentary column at site 865, whereas algal and/or bacterial organic matter is dominant at site 866. This is the first evidence of shallow water deposition of organic matter during the Early Cretaceous in the Northwestern Pacific. The lower Aptian organic carbon-rich layers from the shallow water sediments of site 866 are geochemically similar to coeval mid-water sediments of site 463.

The organic geochemical character of rocks selected from Aptian, Valanginian, and Berriasian clay stone and siltstone sequences encountered in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Holes 762C and 763C on the Exmouth Plateau was determined by means of a variety of analytical procedures. These sequences represent distal portions of the Mesozoic Barrow delta, in which petroleum source rocks and reservoirs exist on the Australian continent. The organic matter at the ODP sites is thermally immature type III material. Biomarker hydrocarbon compositions are dominated by long-chain, waxy n-alkanes and by C29 steranes, which reflect the land-plant origin of organic matter. Organic carbon d13C values ranged from -26 per mil to -28 per mil, consistent with a C3 land-plant source. Kerogen pyrolysate compositions and hopane isomerization ratios revealed progressively larger contributions of recycled organic matter as the depth of the deltaic sedimentary layers became greater.

Five species of Bolboforma have been found in middle Eocene to lower Oligocene sediments from Maud Rise, Weddel Sea, Antarctica (Leg 113, Holes 689B and 690B), the first reported Bolboforma from the Antarctic Paleogene. The previous oldest known occurrences of Bolboforma in the world's oceans were of late Eocene age and this study extends the known range to the middle middle Eocene (~ 44 Ma). Highest species diversity of Bolboforma in the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica occurred during the late Eocene, after which all but one important species disappeared before the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (36.5 Ma). The remaining species, B. irregularis, disappeared soon after, during the earliest Oligocene. The disappearance of Bolboforma in this region of Antarctica coincided with significant climatic cooling that occurred at the end of the Eocene and during the earliest Oligocene, when subpolar replaced temperate conditions. Bolboforma is not known from younger sediments in the Antarctic except for a brief interval during the late early Miocene, an interval of Neogene climatic warmth. The presence of Bolboforma in Eocene to lower Oligocene sequences in the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica is therefore consistent with this taxon's previously recognized association with temperate water masses. Bolboforma is of limited biostratigraphic value at present, because of relatively long stratigraphic ranges and diachronous extinctions. Previous suggestions that Bolboforma represents an encystment stage of phytoplankton require further critical study because the deposition, in large numbers, at paleodepths up to 2250 m in the open ocean, is an unlikely strategy for an encystment phase of a phytoplanktonic organism. A new species, Bolboforma antarctica, is described, exhibiting a stratigraphic range from middle middle Eocene to the upper Eocene (~ 44 to 39 Ma).

An integrated (petrographical and micropaleontological) study of sedimentary cover samples dredged from the lower slopes of the Kuril deep-sea basin was carried out. Pliocene-Pleistocene sediments are mainly represented by tuffaceous sedimentary rocks (tuffites, tuffaceous muds, tuffaceous diatomites, tuffaceous silts, tuffaceous sandstones, etc.). Significant admixtures of pyroclastic matter, especially of volcanic glasses, indicates that sedimentation process was accompanied by explosive volcanism. The data obtained give evidence about intensification of tectonomagmatic regime within the region under study during Pliocene-Pleistocene time. By the beginning of Pliocene, a deep-sea basin with a well-manifested continental and/or island slope and a narrow shelf already existed. Pliocene-Pleistocene deposits accumulated in a cold well-aerated deep-sea basin under oxic conditions and downslope sediment transport.
