An array of four sediment trap moorings recorded the particulate flux across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) at 170 °W, between November 1996 and January 1998, as part of the US JGOFS-Antarctic Environment and Southern Ocean Process Study (AESOPS) program. The trap locations represent sampling within the Polar Frontal Zone, the Antarctic Polar Front, the Antarctic Zone and the Southern Antarctic Zone. Here we report observations from 1000 m below the sea-surface compared to seafloor and surface water distributions. Sub-sample splits from each trap were obtained and total diatom flux and species composition were determined. The diatom fluxes were quantified using both a dilution and a 'spike' method to allow for the rapid repeatability of measurements. Diatom flux was found to be highly seasonal across the ACC particularly at higher latitudes. Marine snow aggregates of intact diatom cells and chains were the major components of the biogenic flux. Siliceous particle size was noted to decrease with increasing latitude, which could be aligned with a shift of the diatom assemblage to small-size species/sea-ice affiliated species. A 'double-structured' diatom flux was recorded at the location of the Antarctic Polar Front trap, with a shift in the diatom assemblage from larger to smaller diatoms in the second flux episode. The sediment trap assemblage shows deviations from the surface water assemblage, while surface sediment samples indicate that significant dissolution occurs after 1000 m and at the sediment-water interface. Estimation of diatom biovolumes across the ACC shows that large diatoms have the potential to greatly impact biogenic fluxes to the ocean interior despite their low fluxes. Small species of the genus Fragilariopsis could potentially export as much Corg as Fragilariopsis kerguelensis near the retreating ice edge. However, their low abundance in the surface sediments also suggests that these diatoms are a shallow export species.

We present a hydrologic reconstruction of the Sahara-Sahel transition, covering the complete last glacial cycle (130 ka), based on a combination of plant-wax-specific hydrogen (dD) and carbon isotopes (d13C). The dD and d13C signatures of long-chain n-alkanes from ODP Site 659 off NW Africa reveal a significant anti-correlation. Complementary to published pollen data, we infer that this plant-wax signal reflects sensitive responses of the vegetation cover to precipitation changes in the Sahel region, as well as varying contributions from biomes north of the Sahara (C3 domain) by North-East Trade Winds (NETW). During arid phases, especially the northern parts of the Sahel likely experienced crucial water stress, which resulted in a pronounced contraction of the vegetation cover, thus reducing the amount of C4 plant waxes from the region. The increase in NETW strength during dry periods further promoted a more pronounced C3-plant-wax signal derived from the North African C3 plant domain. During humid periods, the C4-dominated Sahelian environments spread northward into the Saharan realm, in association with lower NETW inputs of C3 plant waxes. Arid-humid cycles deduced from plant-wax dD are in accordance with concomitant changes in weathering intensity reflected in varying major element distributions. Environmental shifts are generally linked to periods with large fluctuations in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. During Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 3, when insolation variability was low, coupling of the hydrologic regime to alkenone-based estimates of NE Atlantic sea-surface temperatures becomes apparent.

Transmission electron microscopy observations and rock magnetic measurements reveal that alteration of fine- and large-grained iron-titanium oxides can occur at different rates. Fine-grained titanomagnetite occurs as a crystallization product within interstitial glass that originated as an immiscible liquid within a fully differentiated melt; in several samples with ages to 32 Ma it displays very little or no oxidation (z = ca. 0). In contrast, samples with ages of 10 Ma or older are observed to also contain highly oxidized (z >/= 0.66) large-grained titanomaghemite. These large grains, having originated by direct crystallization from melt, are associated with pore space. Such pore space can serve as a conduit for fluids that promote alteration, whereas fine grains may have been "armored" against alteration by the glass matrix in which they are embedded. Apparently, alteration of oceanic crust is a heterogeneous process on a microscopic scale. The existence of pristine, fine-grained titanomagnetite in the interstitial glass of older ocean-floor basalts that have undergone significant alteration implies that such glassy material is capable of carrying original thermal remanent magnetization and may be suitable for paleointensity determinations.

Early Triassic oceans were characterized by deposition of a number of "anachronistic facies", including microbialites, seafloor carbonate cement fans, and giant ooids. Giant ooids were particularly prevalent in Lower Triassic sections across South China and exhibit unusual features that may provide insights into marine environmental conditions following the end-Permian mass extinction. The section at Moyang (Guizhou Province) contains abundant giant ooids ranging in size between 2 and 6 mm (maximum 12 mm) and exhibiting various cortical structures, including regular, deformed, compound, regenerated and "domed". Preservation of ooid cortical structure is generally good as indicated by petrographic observations, and trace element and carbon isotope analyses suggest that diagenesis occurred in a closed diagenetic system. All ooids exhibit fine concentric laminae, frequently alternating between light-colored coarsely crystalline and dark-colored finely crystalline layers probably reflecting variation in organic content or original mineralogy. Under scanning electron microscope, biomineralized filaments or biofilms and tiny carbonate fluorapatite (CFA) crystals are commonly found in the finely crystalline layers. We infer that the precipitation of CFA was related to adsorption of P via microbial activity on the surfaces of ooids following episodic incursions of deep waters rich in carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and phosphate into shallow-marine environments. Giant ooid precipitation may have been promoted in shallow ramp settings during these events by increased watermass agitation and supersaturation with respect to calcium carbonate, as well as reduced carbonate removal rates through biotic skeletal formation. Spatio-temporal distribution data reveal that giant ooids were widespread in the Tethyan region during the Early Triassic, and that they were most abundant immediately after the end-Permian crisis and disappeared gradually as metazoans repopulated marine environments.

The application of quantitative and semiquantitative methods to assemblage data from dinoflagellate cysts shows potential for interpreting past environments, both in terms of paleotemperature estimates and in recognizing water masses and circulation patterns. Estimates of winter sea-surface temperature (WSST) were produced by using the Impagidinium Index (II) method, and by applying a winter-temperature transfer function (TFw). Estimates of summer sea-surface temperature (SSST) were produced by using a summer-temperature transfer function (TFs), two methods based on a temperature-distribution chart (ACT and ACTpo), and a method based on the ratio of gonyaulacoid:protoperidinioid specimens (G:P). WSST estimates from the II and TFw methods are in close agreement except where Impagidinium species are sparse. SSST estimates from TFs are more variable. The value of the G:P ratio for the Pliocene data in this paper is limited by the apparent sparsity of protoperidinioids, which results in monotonous SSST estimates of 14-26°C. The ACT methods show two biases for the Pliocene data set: taxonomic substitution may force 'matches' yielding incorrect temperature estimates, and the method is highly sensitive to the end-points of species distributions. Dinocyst assemblage data were applied to reconstruct Pliocene sea-surface temperatures between 3.5-2.5 Ma from DSDP Hole 552A, and ODP Holes 646B and 642B, which are presently located beneath cold and cool-temperate waters north of 56°N. Our initial results suggest that at 3.0 Ma, WSSTs were a few degrees C warmer than the present and that there was a somewhat reduced north-south temperature gradient. For all three sites, it is likely that SSSTs were also warmer, but by an unknown, perhaps large, amount. Past oceanic circulation in the North Atlantic was probably different from the present.

Distributions of free and bound n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alkanols were determined in order to compare the character of organic matter contained in organic-carbon-rich sediments from two sites sampled by the hydraulic piston corer. Two diatomaceous debris-flow samples of Pleistocene age were obtained from Hole 530B in the Angola Basin. A sample of bioturbated Pleistocene diatomaceous clay and another of bioturbated late Miocene nannofossil clay were collected from Hole 532 on the Walvis Ridge. Geolipid distributions of all samples contain large terrigenous contributions and lesser amounts of marine components. Similarities in organic matter contents of Hole 530B and Hole 532 sediments suggest that a common depositional setting, probably on the Walvis Ridge, was the original source of these sediments through Quaternary, and possibly late Neogene, times and that downslope relocation of these biogenic deposits has frequently occurred.

It has been shown that in the Sevastopol Bay during the year primary production and chlorophyll "a" created by picoplankton (0.45-2.5 µm) consisted on the average 20-44% of total production. It was approximately a half of the level for oligotrophic waters of the ocean. Picoplankton of waters studied is represented by eucaryotes, cell diameter of which is, as a rule, about 2-3 µm. Contribution of the finest fraction of phytoplankton (0.43-0.85 µm) to primary production and con¬tent of chlorophyll "a" was insignificant (0-4%).

Analysis of individual laminae in Recent sediments from the slopes of the Guaymas Basin indicates an increased abundance of the larger sizes (>60 µm) of Coscinodiscus nodulifer when upwelling conditions persist over the depositional site and an increase of the smaller sizes (<60 µm) when nonupwelling conditions exist. The size distributions of C. nodulifer in 10-cm composite samples from Hole 480 show a greater abundance of the large sizes (>60 µm) associated with well-laminated sections and more of the smaller sizes (<60 µm) in samples from the homogeneous sections. We have tentatively correlated the pronounced homogeneous zones with late Pleistocene glacial periods. These results indicate a persistence of nonupwelling conditions over Hole 480 during glacial periods (homogeneous zones) and a predominance of upwelling conditions during interglacial periods (laminated zones). Other evidence from diatom and silicoflagellate floral analysis seems to support these preliminary conclusions.
