Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered a large volume of Neogene sediments from sites in the Straits of Florida, Little Bahama Bank, and Exuma Sound. In varying amounts, shallow-water, platform-derived carbonate debris is nearly ubiquitous. Reworked planktonic foraminifers are common, especially in the Pliocene-Pleistocene. At Site 626 in the Straits of Florida, a sequence of Holocene to upper Oligocene sediments was recovered. The greatest Neogene hiatus at this site spans the latest Miocene through Pliocene. Below this, several minor hiatuses are present in a generally conformable sequence. From the Little Bahama Bank transect (Sites 627, 628, and 630), a nearly complete composite Neogene section was sampled. At Site 627, a major unconformity separates lowermost Miocene sediments from middle to upper Eocene sediments. A second major unconformity occurs at Site 628. Here, middle Miocene sediments lie above uppermost Oligocene deposits. Sites 632, 633, and 631 in Exuma Sound all bottomed in a thick, lower Pliocene section. The mid-Pliocene is very thin at Sites 633 and 631, while it is better represented at Site 632. Major unconformities at Sites 627 and 628 appear to correlate with periods of elevated sea level, which suggests that carbonate platform shedding may be greatest during this part of the sea-level cycles. One of the salient features of the Bahamas is the lack of any systematic temporal distribution of hiatuses. Only a brief hiatus in the late Pliocene may be regional. It appears that local platform-shedding events were of equal or greater importance in developing the stratigraphy of the Bahamas than regional or eustatic events.

Reinvestigation of the Odderade Interstadial in its type locality led to an augmentation of the flora list and correction of some misinterpretations (e.g. Omorica, Frangula). The Eemian, stadials FW 1 and 3, and the interstadials Amersfoort/Broerup and Odderade have been manifested by pollen analyses. FW 1 and FW 3 are probably not completely free from forested areas. The new pollen diagrams considered with older data from Odderade, and in comparison with other regions in Central Europe, fit essentially with the classification and development of Vegetation during the Early Weichselian in Oerel by Behre & Lade (1986).

Palynological investigations of sediments from northern Bavaria (Rhön, Grabfeld, Lange Berge) reveal the Late Glacial and Postglacial history of the regional vegetation. The older sedirnents were found in the Rhön (Schwarzes Moor) and date back into the Bölling Period. At the end of that period pine spread into the Grabfeld. In both areas Lacher Tuff has been found. A radiocarbon date of 10,300 BP was found for the Late Glacial - Postglacial transition and one of 9300 BP for the Preboreal - Boreal transition. Hazel reached its highest values in the Rhön around 7,400 BP. During the Atlanticum a deciduous mixed oak forest covered the Rhön and Grabfeld regions. Beech dominated since the Subatlanticum. In the Lange Berge region, however, a mixed forest with Fagus, Picea, Pinus and Abies developed. In the Rhön first anthropogenic influence was found during the Latene Period. The boundary between zone IX and X has been dated at 820 A.D., and the start of extensive forest clearances at 1000 A. D. A culmination of landuse was found for the Medieval Period. At the end of that period however the Rhön was deserted. New forest clearances started around 1500 A.D., but were interrupted by the 'Thirty Years War'. Afterwards the Rhön got its present appearance.

Ten algal strains from snow and permafrost substrates were tested for their ability to produce secondary carotenoids and ?-tocopherol in response to high light and decreased nitrogen levels. The Culture Collection of Cryophilic Algae at Fraunhofer IBMT in Potsdam served as the bioresource for this study. Eight of the strains belong to the Chlorophyceae and two strains are affiliated to the Trebouxiophyceae. While under low light, all 10 strains produced the normal spectrum of primary pigments known to be present in Chlorophyta, only the eight chlorophyceaen strains were able to synthesize secondary carotenoids under stress conditions, namely canthaxanthin, echinenone and astaxanthin; seven of them were also able to synthesize minor amounts of adonixanthin and an unidentified hydroxyechinenone. The two trebouxiophyceaen species of Raphidonema exhibited an unusually high pool of primary xanthophyll cycle pigments, possibly serving as a buffering reservoir against excessive irradiation. They also proved to be good alpha-tocopherol producers, which might also support the deactivation of reactive oxygen species. This study showed that some strains might be interesting novel candidates for biotechnological applications. Cold-adapted, snow and permafrost algae might serve as valuable production strains still exhibiting acceptable growth rates during the cold season in temperate regions.
