Mixed assemblages of Pliocene and Quaternary foraminifera occur within the Quaternary succession of the CRP-1 drillhole. Pliocene foraminifera are not present in the lowermost Unit 4.1. are rare in Unit 3.1 and 2.3, are relatively common in Units 2.2 and 2.1, and are absent in Unit 1.1. Fifteen and twelve species were documented in two of the samples from Units 2.2 and 2.1 respectively. A census count of foraminifera in a sample at 26.89 mbsf (Unit 2.2) indicated that 39% of the tests were from a Pliocene source, with the remaining 61% tests assigned to the in situ Quaternary assemblage. There appears to be a close correlation between the stratigraphic distribution of ice-rafted sediments and the test number and diversity of Pliocene taxa. It is concluded that Pliocene assemblages were not derived from submarine outcrops on Roberts Ridge, but are more likely to have been rafted to the site via major trunk valley drainage systems such as operated within the Mackay and Ferrar glacial valleys. The co-occurrence of marine biota (including foraminifera), fossil wood, pollen, and igneous clasts in the Quaternary succession of CRP-l, points to the marine and terrestrial facies of the Pliocene Sirius Group as a likely source. A major episode of erosion and transport of sediment into the offshore marine basins at about ~1 Ma may have been triggered by dynamism in the ice sheet-glacier system, an episode of regional uplift in the Transantarctic Mountains, sea level oscillations and associated changes in the land-to-sea drainage baselines, or some combination of these factors.

Magnetic properties of doleritic and some metamorphic basement rocks underlying Catoche Knoll are studied. Doleritic rocks show a high saturation magnetic moment (2-5 emu/g) compared to metamorphic rocks (0.1-1 emu/g). Magnetic minerals of rocks from this hole show a high stability when heated in vacuo up to 600°C at a fixed rate of heating. Curie temperatures are distributed close to 550°C. These properties differ markedly from those of common submarine basalts observed before. X-ray microprobe analysis techniques were used to determine internal structures of ferromagnetic minerals; in most of ferromagnetic minerals there exist two different types of magnetic phases (i.e., products of high-temperature and low-temperature oxidations). Interpretations on the coexisting, seemingly contradictory, phases can be made based upon present analyses.

Basalts from different structural provinces in the ocean basins, such as mid-ocean ridges, island arcs, and oceanic plateaus, show marked differences in major and minor element composition stemming from differences in magma source. In addition, there are variations even within individual provinces, based on such processes as crystal fractionation, secondary alteration, and hydrothermal alteration. It is also known that hydrothermal processes can cause changes in the gas composition of submarine basalts. For example, Zolotarev et al. (1978) have established that hydrothermal alteration frequently causes an increase in the CO2 content of basalts. If the homogeneity in composition and concentration of organic gases in oceanic basalts is associated with degassing during epimagmatic alteration, it would be interesting to investigate the relative abundance of gas phases in young basalts from midoceanic ridges. This chapter deals with the distribution of organic gases and CO2 in young basalts recovered on Leg 65 from the Gulf of California. Our aim was to establish the relationship between gas composition and degree of alteration.

Stable oxygen- and carbon-isotope ratios of Rhaetian (upper Triassic) limestone samples from the Wombat Plateau, northwest Australia, were measured to explore possible diagenetic pathways that the material underwent after deposition in a shallow-water environment, before plateau submergence in the Early Cretaceous. Host sediment isotopic values cluster near typical marine carbonate values (d18O ranging from -2.57 per mil to +1.78 per mil and d13C, from +2.45 per mil to +4.01 per mil). Isotopic values of equant clear calcite lining or filling rock pores also plot in the field of marine cements (d18O = +1.59 per mil to -2.24 per mil and d13C = +4.25 per mil to +2.57 per mil), while isotopic values for neomorphic calcites replacing skeletal (megalodontid shell) carbonate material show a wider scatter of oxygen and carbon values, d18O ranging from +2.73 per milo to -6.2 per mil and d13C, from +5.04 per mil to +1.22 per mil. Selective dissolution of metastable carbonate phases (aragonite?) and neomorphic replacement of skeletal material probably occurred in a meteoric phreatic environment, although replacement products (inclusion-rich microspar, clear neomorphic spar, etc.) retained the original marine isotopic signature because transformation probably occurred in a closed system dominated by the composition of the dissolving phases (high rock/water ratio). The precipitation of late-stage equant (low-Mg?) calcite cement in the pores occurred in the presence of normal marine waters, probably in a deep-water environment, after plateau drowning. Covariance of d18O and d13C toward negative values indeed suggests influence of meteorically modified fluids. However, none of the samples shows negative carbon values, excluding the persistence of organic-rich soils on subaerial karstic surfaces (Caribbean-style diagenesis). Petrographical and geochemical data are consistent with the sedimentological evidence of plateau drowning in post-Rhaetian times and with a submarine origin of the >70-m.y.-long Jurassic hiatus.

Ostracods secrete their valve calcite within a few hours or days, therefore, its isotopic composition records ambient environmental conditions of only a short time span. Hydrographic changes between the calcification of individuals lead to a corresponding range (max.-min.) in the isotope values when measuring several (>=5) single valves from a specific sediment sample. Analyses of living (stained) ostracods from the Kara Sea sediment surface revealed high ranges of >2per mil of d18O and d13C at low absolute levels (d18O: <3per mil, d13C: <-3per mil) near the river estuaries of Ob and Yenisei and low ranges of not, vert, similar1per mil at higher absolute levels (d18O: 2-5.4per mil, d13C: -3 per mil to -1.5per mil) on the shelf and in submarine paleo-river channels. Comparison with a hydrographic data base and isotope measurements of bottom water samples shows that the average and the span of the ostracod-based isotope ranges closely mirror the long-term means and variabilities (standard deviation) of bottom water temperature and salinity. The bottom hydrography in the southern part of the Kara Sea shows strong response to the river discharge and its extreme seasonal and interannual variability. Less variable hydrographic conditions are indicative for deeper shelf areas to the north, but also for areas near the river estuaries along submarine paleo-river channels, which act as corridors for southward flowing cold and saline bottom water. Isotope analyses on up to five single ostracod valves per sample in the lower section (8-7 cal. ka BP) of a sediment core north of Yenisei estuary revealed d18O and d13C values which on average are lower by 0.6? in both, d18O and d13C, than in the upper core section (<5 cal. ka BP). The isotope shifts illustrate the decreasing influence of isotopically light river water at the bottom as a result of the southward retreat of the Yenisei river mouth from the coring site due to global sea level rise. However, the ranges (max.-min.) in the single-valve d18O and d13C data of the individual core samples are similar in the upper and in the lower core section, although a higher hydrographic variability is expected prior to 7 cal. ka BP due to river proximity. This lack of variability indicates the southward flow of cold, saline water along a submarine paleo-river channel, formerly existing at the core location. Despite shallowing of the site due to sediment filling of the channel and isostatic uplift of the area, the hydrographic variability at the core location remained low during the Late Holocene, because the shallowing proceeded synchronously with the retreat of the river mouth due to the global sea level rise

Results of detailed geophysical, geological and gas- and hydrochemical research in the Caribbean-Mexican Basin and the Western Atlantic obtained during Cruise 4 of R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov are published in the book. Distribution of the thermal field in different tectonic structures of the region is shown. Places of submarine hydrothermal vent discharge in tectonically active structures are described. They are confirmed by geothermal, geological and hydrochemical data. Based on lithofacies analysis of modern sediments installed their Specificity of different genetic types, facies and macrofacies of recent sediments in different geomorphological zones of the sea floor is shown. For description of hydrogeochemical situation of modern sedimentation and primary diagenesis the water column and interstitial sediment waters have been studied.

Small glassy spheres, ellipsoids, teardrops, cylinders and dumbbells occur in large numbers in Tertiary deep sea clays cored in the northeastern Pacific by the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These objects morphologically resemble microtektites, but have the composition of an oceanic tholeiite. On the basis of their composition and stratigraphic relationship it is considered that they are of volcanic origin and most likely have been formed in deep water by submarine volcanic processes.

A basaltic sequence of Eocene submarine-erupted pyroclastic sediments totals at least 388 m at DSDP Site 253 on the Ninetyeast Ridge. These fossiliferous hyaloclastic sediments have been erupted and fragmented by explosive volcanism (hydroexplosions) in shallow water. The occurrence of interbedded basaltic ash-fall tuffs within the younger horizons of the hyaloclastic sequence marks the emergence of some Ninetyeast Ridge volcanic vents above sea level. Considerable textural variation allows subdivision of the sequence into six informal lithostratigraphic units. Hydrothermal and diagenetic alteration has caused the complete replacement of all original glass by smectites, and the introduction of abundant zeolite and calcite cements. The major and trace element contents of the hyaloclastites vary due to the alteration, and the admixture of biogenous calcite. On a calcium carbonate-free basis systematic variations are recognisable. Mg, Ni, Cr and Cu are enriched, and Li and Zn depleted in the three older units relative to the younger three. The chemical variability is reflected by the development of saponite in the older part of the sequence and montmorillonite in the younger; and by the presence of a quartz-normative basalt flow occurring in Unit II, in contrast to the Mg-rich highly olivine-normative basalt at the base of the sequence. The younger and older parts of the sequence therefore appear to have been derived from magmas of different chemistry. The sequence, like other basaltic rocks recovered from the Ninetyeast Ridge, is enriched in the light relative to the heavy rare earth elements (REE) although the REE contents vary unsystematically with depth, probably because of the high-temperature subaqueous alteration and the presence of biogenous calcite. This REE data indicates that the Ninetyeast Ridge volcanism was different from that which produces mid-ocean ridge basalts.

Sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 123 from the Argo Abyssal Plain (AAP) consist largely of turbidites derived from the adjacent Australian continental margin. The oldest abundant turbidites are Valanginian-Aptian in age and have a mixed (smarl) composition; they contain subequal amounts of calcareous and siliceous biogenic components, as well as clay and lesser quartz. Most are thin-bedded, fine sand- to mud-sized, and best described by Stow and Piper's model (1984) for fine-grained biogenic turbidites. Thicker (to 3 m), coarser-grained (medium-to-coarse sand-sized) turbidites fit Bouma's model (1962) for sandy turbidites; these generally are base-cut-out (BCDE, BDE) sequences, with B-division parallel lamination as the dominant structure. Parallel laminae most commonly concentrate quartz and/or calcispheres vs. lithic clasts or clay, but distinctive millimeter- to centimeter-thick, radiolarian-rich laminae occur in both fine- and coarse-grained Valanginian-Hauterivian turbidites. AAP turbidites were derived from relatively deep parts of the continental margin (outer shelf, slope, or rise) that lay below the photic zone, but above the calcite compensation depth (CCD). Biogenic components are largely pelagic (calcispheres, foraminifers, radiolarians, nannofossils); lesser benthic foraminifers are characteristic of deep-water (abyssal to bathyal) environments. Abundant nonbiogenic components are mostly clay and clay clasts; smectite is the dominant clay species, and indicates a volcanogenic provenance, most likely the Triassic-Jurassic volcanic suite exposed along the northern Exmouth Plateau. Lower Cretaceous smarl turbidites were generated during eustatic lowstands and may have reached the abyssal plain via Swan Canyon, a submarine canyon thought to have formed during the Late Jurassic. In contrast to younger AAP turbidites, however, Lower Cretaceous turbidites are relatively fine-grained and do not contain notably older reworked fossils. Early in its history, the northwest Australian margin provided mainly contemporaneous slope sediment to the AAP; marginal basins adjacent to the continent trapped most terrigenous detritus, and pronounced canyon incisement did not occur until Late Cretaceous and, especially, Cenozoic time.
