Data collection of Calanus finmarchicus reproduction life history traits in the North Atlantic Ocean

Observations of egg production rates (EPR) for female Calanus finmarchicus were compared from different regions of the North Atlantic. The regions were diverse in size and sampling frequency, ranging from a fixed time series station in the Lower St Lawrence Estuary, off Rimouski, where nearly 200 experiments were carried out between May and December from 1994 to 2006, to a large-scale survey in the Northern Norwegian Sea, where about 50 experiments were carried out between April and June from 2002 to 2004. For this analysis the stations were grouped mostly along geographic lines, with only limited attention being paid to oceanographic features. There is some overlap between regions, however, where stations were sometimes kept together when they were sampled on the same cruise. As well some stations other than off Rimouski were occupied more than once during different years and/or in different seasons.

In three typical sandy soils of Northern Germany the mobility of radioactive fission products of technetium, iodine, ruthenium and zirconium have been investigated in dependence of the hydrodynamic and physico-chemical soil properties. The laboratory experiments, which simulated fall-out events, used soil columns (1 m length, 30 cm diameter) taken as undisturbed as possible. By measurements of the breakthrough curves in the percolate and of the depth distribution of radionuclides in the soil columns after 6 months the average transport velocity could be determined. These values could be compared with the average water velocity measured by 3H tagging. Three qualitative mobility relations were observed: Ranker: Tc > Ru > I > Zr; Podsol: Tc > Ru > I > Zr; Brown forest soil: Tc = Ru > I > Zr. Relations between some physico-chemical soil properties and the retardation of radionuclides due to adsorption could be observed (eg. retardation of iodine and technetium by organic substances). The average retardation factors of the radionuclides and the hydrodynamic soil parameters are used in a model which gives a quantitative assessment of the hazard of groundwater contamination by a fall-out event in areas covered with comparable soils.

Flux of siliceous plankton and taxonomic composition of diatom and silicoflagellate assemblages were determined from sediment trap samples collected in coastal upwelling-influenced waters off northern Chile (30°S, CH site) under "normal" or non-El Niño (1993-94) and El Niño conditions (1997-98). In addition, concentration of biogenic opal and siliceous plankton, and diatom and silicoflagellate assemblages preserved in surface sediments are provided for a wide area between 27° and 43°S off Chile. Regardless of the year, winter upwelling determines the maximum production pattern of siliceous microorganisms, with diatoms numerically dominating the biogenic opal flux. During the El Niño year the export is markedly lower: on an annual basis, total mass flux diminished by 60%, and diatom and silicoflagellate export by 75%. Major components of the diatom flora maintain much of their regular seasonal cycle of flux maxima and minima during both sampling periods. Neritic resting spores (RS) of Chaetoceros dominate the diatom flux, mirroring the influence of coastal-upwelled waters at the CH trap site. Occurrence of pelagic diatoms species Fragilariopsis doliolus, members of the Rhizosoleniaceae, Azpeitia spp. and Nitzschia interruptestriata, secondary components of the assemblage, reflects the intermingling of warmer waters of the Subtropical Gyre. Dictyocha messanensis dominates the silicoflagellate association almost year-around, but Distephanus pulchra delivers ca. 60% of its annual production in less than three weeks during the winter peak. The siliceous thanatocoenosis is largely dominated by diatoms, whose assemblage shows significant qualitative and quantitative variations from north to south. Between 27° and 35°S, the dominance of RS Chaetoceros, Thalassionema nitzschioides var. nitzschioides and Skeletonema costatum reflects strong export production associated with occurrence of coastal upwelling. Both highest biogenic opal content and diatom concentration at 35° and 41°-43°S coincide with highest pigment concentrations along the Chilean coast. Predominance of the diatom species Thalassiosira pacifica and T. poro-irregulata, and higher relative contribution of the silicoflagellate Distephanus speculum at 41°-43°S suggest the influence of more nutrient-rich waters and low sea surface temperatures, probably associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Water.

Morphology, ecology, range and species composition of diatom algae mass accumulations that are biotypically associated with the lower surface of Arctic sea ice are discussed. Materials were obtained by skindivers in the Central Arctic Basin at drift stations SP-23 in August 1977 and SP-22 in July 1980.

The distribution of calcareous nannofossils is documented for the middle Eocene through lowermost Miocene cores from Ocean Drilling Program Holes 699A and 703A in the subantarctic South Atlantic. The detailed nannofossil biostratigraphies established, in combination with published magnetostratigraphic data, have provided a fairly detailed age model for each hole. This study suggests that the middle Eocene through lowermost Miocene section from Hole 699A is virtually complete. A major hiatus has been identified in Hole 703A in the earliest Oligocene, coincident with n abrupt cooling in the Southern Ocean. Comparison of the nannofossil datum ages calibrated with magnetostratigraphy in the two holes with those from mid and southern high latitudes demonstrates synchroneity or diachroneity for the following nannofossil datums: (1) The last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra bisecta is a consistent and reliable biostratigraphic marker for the Oligocene/Miocene boundary from mid- to high latitudes but not in extreme high latitudes; (2) similarly, the LO of Chiasmolithus altus has a consistent age of about 26.8 Ma in the Southern Ocean except in the extreme high latitudes where the datum appears to be substantially younger; (3) the LO of Reticulofenestra umbilica is about 32.9 Ma in the Southern Ocean; (4) the LO of Isthmolithus recurvus is reliable and consistent from mid through high latitudes and correlates with the lower part of Subchron C12R (~34.4 Ma); (5) the LO of Reticulofenestra oamaruensis has a consistent age of 36.0 Ma at all four Southern Ocean sites that have yielded a lower Oligocene magnetostratigraphy; (6) the first occurrence (FO) of R. oamaruensis is at 38.4 Ma in the Southern Ocean; and (7) the FO of I. recurvus shows some age variations from mid to high latitudes and the age range is 38.5-39.0 Ma at the five Southern Ocean sites.

Analysis of 66 samples from DSDP Site 263 (Cores 263-4R-4 to 263-29R-4) reveals a unique faunal composition with a predominance of agglutinated taxa, many of them previously unrecorded from any other DSDP and ODP Indian Ocean sites. A total of 66 agglutinated and 31 calcareous taxa are documented and five new species are described: Hippocrepina gracilis n.sp., "Textuluriopsis" elegans n.sp., Aaptotoichus challengeri n.sp., "Gaudryinopsis" pseudobettenstaedti n.sp. and "Gaudryina" cuvierensis n.sp. Three assemblages are recognized based on changes in the composition of dominant taxa and occurrences of stratigraphically important species: (1) a high-diversity Valanginian to Barremian Bulbobaculites-Recurvoides Assemblage (Cores 263-29R to - 18R), comprised of numerous elongate agglutinated forms, rare nodosariids, and variable numbers of tubes and ammodiscids; (2) a moderately diverse Aptian to Albian Rhizammina-Ammodiscus-Glomospira Assemblage (Cores 263-18R to -7R) with highly fluctuating numbers of the nominate taxa and Haplophragmoides, Trochammina, Verneuilinoides spp., and Verneuilina howchini; (3) a very low diversity Albian or younger Assemblage (Cores 263-6R to -4R) containing sparse agglutinated foraminifera, rare nodosariids and rotaliids. We interpret the assemblages as shelf to lower slope and consider them to reflect a deepening palaeobathymetry as the Cuvier margin subsided after the initial breakup of East Gondwana during the Valanginian. Our interpretation is in sharp contrast with initial palaeodepth estimates of less than 100 m, as well as with original chronostratigraphic interpretations based on foraminifera and nannofossils which correlated the base of the recovered interval with the Aptian. The absence of many cosmoplitan forms, despite high diversity suggests strong faunal differentiation in the Austral realm or endemisn within the Cuvier Basin during the Early Cretaceous.
