The book is devoted to fundamental problems of organic geochemistry of ocean sediments. It is based on materials of organic matter and gas studies in cores from DSDP Legs 50 and 64. Experimental results obtained in the Laboratory of Carbon Geochemistry (V.I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, Moscow) take the main part of the book. Evolution of organic matter in specific environment of deep ocean sediments, sources of organic matter in the ocean and methods of their identification based on isotopic analysis and other methods are under discussion. Gas geochemistry in normal conditions of diagenesis, and in conditions under intense heating is studied.

Manganese-iron accumulates in the Kiel Bay were investigated with regard to their occurence, chemical composition and formation. Three morphologically different types were identified: a) growth on mussels, b) spherical nodules (ca. 1-3 cm) and c) disshaped symetrical and asymetrical nodules (up to 10 cm). Average values from 110 accumulates representing the three types were: Mn 29.3%, Fe 10.0%, Co 77 ppm, Ni 97 ppm, Cu 21 ppm and Zn 340 ppm. Accumulates on mussels showed the highest trace metal concentrations. A growth rate of ca. 0.6 mm/yr for type (a) was estimated. Heavy metal concentrations were determined in ca. 60 sediment and 30 pore water samples, and in 110 Baltic sea water samples. During certain periods, large increases in Mn values (up to 400 (µg/l) were found in the deeper waters. These concentrations develop during periods of strong stagnant conditions in the sediments where dissolution of Mn oxides, and diffusion mobilizes the Mn into the overlying waters. The manganese is then reprecipitated close to the boundary of the O2-enriched surface waters. This critical O2-concentration was found to be 40% saturation. In the Kiel Bay, Mn-Fe-accumulates are found in a zone which marks the upper limit sometimes reached by the deep waters of lower O2-concentration. Additionally, the availability of larger particles (especially stones or mussels) on the sediment surface is necessary. These conditions are met in the Kiel Bay in a water depth of 20-28 m at several places.

Results of petrographic studies of ultrabasites and gabbro from rift zones of the Indian Ocean are discussed using materials of Cruise 36 of R/V Vityaz. Rocks sampled from two sites 2700 km apart are close to each other in their composition. Petrographically ultrabasic rocks are divided into four subgroups: I - dunite; II - harzburgite, serpentinite; III - plagioclase lherzolite; and IV - metamorphically altered rocks. Petrographic description and chemical composition of basic rock varieties are presented as well as description of rock-forming minerals and their optical properties. Formation of pyroxene and plagioclase is shown to be related to autometasomatosis. Formation of ultrabasite in rift zones is related to complicated processes.

Pore waters were analyzed from 6 holes drilled from M.V. "Eureka" as a part of the Shell Oil Co. deeper offshore study. The holes were drilled in water depths of 600-3000 ft. (approximately 180-550 m) and penetrated up to 1000 ft. (300 m) of Pliocene-Recent clayey sediments. Salt and anhydrite caprock was encountered in one diapiric structure on the continental slope. Samples from holes drilled near diapiric structures showed systematic increases of pore-water salinity with depth, suggestive of salt diffusion from underlying salt plugs. Anomalous concentrations of K and Br indicate that at least one plug contains late-stage evaporite minerals. Salinities approaching halite saturation were observed. Samples from holes away from diapiric structures showed little change in pore-water chemistry, except for loss of SO4 and other variations attributable to early-stage diagenetic reactions with enclosing sediments. Thus, increased salt concentrations in even shallow sediments from this part of the Gulf appear to provide an indicator of salt masses at depth.

Results of mineralogical and geochemical investigations of post-Middle Jurassic deposits of the Atlantic Ocean are based on materials of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Comparative characteristics of primary matter for ''black shales'' are given. Exhalative origin of heavy metal accumulation in near-axial sedimentary deeps of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (23°N) are shown. History of post-Middle Jurassic sedimentation is considered on the base of clay mineral-, clastic component-, trace and rare- chemical element studies.

The first series of Soviet standard reference samples of composition of ore materials and ocean pelagic sediments has been created. It includes iron-manganese nodules (SDO-4, SDO-5 and SDO-6), ore crusts (SDO-7) diatomaceous ooze (SDO-8), and deep-sea red clays (SDO-9). The standards are intended to serve as a metrologic basis for physical, physicochemical and chemical analyses of iron-manganese minerals and ocean sediments. The standards are provided with certified analyses of rock-forming components and certain trace elements. Certified characteristics are based on statistical analysis of data obtained from an inter-laboratory experiment involving analysis of the standard reference samples by a variety of methods.

Results of petrographic studies of ultrabasite and gabbro from the rift zones of the Indian Ocean ridges are discussed using materials of R/V Vityaz Cruise 36. Formation of pyroxene and plagioclase is shown to be related to autometasomatosis, which concludes the magmatic phase proper in rock mass formation accompanied by activity of residual intragranular liquid. Formation of ultrabasite in the rift zones is related to complicated processes.

Dunite and gabbroic materials recovered from Hole 1271B, Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 209, were examined for mineral chemistry to understand melt flow and melt-mantle reactions in the shallowest upper mantle of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the 15°20' Fracture Zone. Hole 1271B was drilled to 103.8 meters below seafloor on the inner corner high along the south wall of the 15°20' Fracture Zone. The total length of core collected was 15.9 m (recovery = ~15%). The dominant rock type in Hole 1271B is dunite, followed by brown amphibole gabbro, olivine gabbro, and troctolite, along with minor amounts of harzburgite and olivine gabbronorite. A large proportion of the dunite is associated with gabbroic rocks in Hole 1271B, similar to those observed in the Mohorovicic (Moho) transition zone of the Oman ophiolite, indicating significant magmatic activity in this region near the 15°20' Fracture Zone. Olivine Fo content varies from 89.2 to 91.2 in impregnated dunite and from 85.6 to 88.6 in troctolite, olivine gabbro, and olivine gabbronorite. Spinel Cr# (= 100 x Cr/[Cr + Al] molar ratio) ranges from 38.9 to 62.7 in dunite and from 46.3 to 57.6 in troctolites, olivine gabbro, and olivine gabbronorite. Compositional trends for spinel from dunite through troctolite toward olivine gabbro/gabbronorite are characterized by increases in TiO2, Cr#, and Fe3+#, very similar to those reported from Hess Deep Site 895. Olivine gabbro, olivine gabbronorite, and troctolite in Hole 1271B are considered to have formed as hybrid rocks between dunite and an evolved melt in the walls of a melt channel in the shallowest upper mantle that is tens of meters wide. The melt trapped in the wall rock crystallized plagioclase and clinopyroxene. On the other hand, dunite in the center of the melt channel became more refractory by melt-mantle reactions, increasing spinel Cr# to 62.5.

The ocean plays a major role in the global carbon cycle, and attempts to reconstruct past changes in the marine carbonate system are increasing. The speciation of dissolved uranium is sensitive to variations in carbonate system parameters, and previous studies have shown that this is recorded in the uranium-to-calcium ratio (U/Ca) of the calcite shells of planktonic foraminifera. Here we test whether U/Ca ratios of deep-sea benthic foraminifera are equally suited as an indicator of the carbonate system. We compare U/Ca in two common benthic foraminifer species (Planulina wuellerstorfi and Cibicidoides mundulus) from South Atlantic core top samples with the calcite saturation state (Delta [CO3**2-] = [CO3**2-]in situ - [CO3**2-]sat) of the ambient seawater and find significant negative correlations for both species. Compared with planktonic foraminifera, the sensitivity of U/Ca in benthic foraminifera to changes in Delta [CO3**2-] is about 1 order of magnitude higher. Although Delta [CO3**2-] exerts the dominant control on the average foraminiferal U/Ca, the intertest and intratest variability indicates the presence of additional factors forcing U/Ca.

Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were examined in the surface layer of bottom sediments from the eastern part of the Sakhalin Island shelf (materials were sampled in summer 2002). Concentrations of hydrocarbons were determined to know changed since beginning of development of oil fields (compared with earlier years). According to distribution of markers in hydrocarbon compositions, bottom sediments are dominated by allochthonous (terrigenous) hydrocarbons that are the most stable compounds. Occurrence of transformed anthropogenic oil alkanes that have never been found before may be indicative of increasing pollution in the region.
