We have measured the 3He/3He and 3He/20 Ne ratios of thirty-nine pore water and gas samples in deep-sea sediments collected at twelve sites on the Pacific Ocean bottom during the cruises of Deep Sea Drilling Project Legs 87, 89, 90 and 92. The 3He/4He and 4He/20Ne ratios vary from 0.000000215 to 0.00000165 and from 0.29 to 20, respectively. He in the sample is composed of four components: (1) atmospheric He dissolved in seawater; (2) atmospheric He with mantle-derived He in Pacific bottom water; (3) in situ radiogenic He in the sediment; and (4) crustal He in the basement rock. Assuming that the 20Ne contents are constant with the value of seawater, the depth variations in the 4He/20Ne ratios at five Sites, 583D, 594, 597A, 598A and 504B, may provide useful information on 4He flux at the ocean bottom. The estimated 4He fluxes vary from 2000 to 40000 atoms cm**-2 s**-1 and are one to three orders of magnitude less than those calculated from the excess He in deep ocean water. An overall similarity between the geographical distribution of the 3He/4He ratios and heat flow data is found in the study area, between the East Pacific Rise across the Pacific Ocean and the Japanese Islands. The tendency is well explained by a conventional sea-floor spreading model.

The solution rate of biogenic opal in near-surface sediments in the Central Equatorial Pacific is three to eight orders of magnitude lower than similar acid-cleaned samples. Iron, magnesium and calcium aluminosilicates may be the minerals which are forming on the surface of the opal and reducing its solution rate. The scale height of the system studied suggests that diffusive and not advective processes are primarily responsible for the removal of dissolved silica in sediments. Solution budget calculations for this area suggest that 90-99 per cent of the biogenic opal produced in surface waters dissolves before reaching the sediment-water interface; an additional amount dissolves within the sediment and diffuses into bottom waters leaving 0.05-0.15 per cent of the original amount of opal produced by organisms in the sedimentary record. The relative solution potential of the upper 1000 m of the water column varies by more than an order of magnitude from the Antarctic to Equator and may have a pronounced effect on the accumulation rate of biogenic opal in underlying sediments.

Gas composition and hydrochemistry of bottom waters of the Bay of Plenty in the hydrothermally active zone of the Pacific island arc are investigated. Methane content in underwater vents is an order of magnitude greater than that in volcanic exhalations on the land. Salinity, pH, total content of CO2, its partial pressure, and silica content also differ. Correlations between gas parameters, hydrochemical parameters, and biological and microbiological parameters are identified.

During Leg 92 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, sediments containing calcareous nannofossils of latest Oligocene to Holocene age were recovered from 14 holes at six sites (597 to 602) along the East Pacific Rise. The combined sections yield a virtually complete record for the region, with a compressed upper Miocene to Pleistocene interval. The nannofossil content of 14 U.S.N.S. Eltanin piston cores from the study area were also examined in order to supplement data generated during Leg 92. Two taxonomically new combinations are presented: Sphenolithus umbellus and Pontosphaera segmenta. Assemblages of calcareous nannofossils juxtaposed in reversed stratigraphic order within the upper Miocene provide strong evidence for downslope transport of sediments along the East Pacific Rise during the Messinian. Narrow bands of dark metalliferous sediment of coccolith Zone CN8b alternate with normal light-colored, in situ, pelagic sequences of Zone CN9b. This may indicate more vigorous bottom current activity between 5.40 and 6.70 Ma.

Quantitative distribution of plankton (mostly mesoplankton) is studied in the upper 200 m layer of oligotrophic waters in tropical anticyclonic gyres of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Some general features of its trophic and taxonomic structures and vertical distribution are described.

Platinoid element contents were determined in 16 samples of Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected during dredging deep-sea mound slopes of the Pacific Ocean from the equator to 27°N. The method of neutron activation analysis with pre-concentration of the platinoids was used for these determinations. There is no relationship between platinoid contents in deep-sea (>3000 m) Fe-Mn nodules with depth of sampling, as well as with age of nodule layers. It is concludet that ultramafic rocks are the primary source of platinoids in Fe-Mn nodules.

An analysis was made of composition and content of nutrients, salts, particulate and dissolved organic matter, and various plankton groups in a series of samples collected by a 140-liter sampling bottle to depth up to 150 m at 4 equatorial stations between 97° and 154°W. Large and small phytoplankton, bacteria (aggregated and dispersed), heterotrophic flagellates, infusorians, radiolarians, foraminifers, fine filter-feeders, small and large, mostly herbivorous copepods, cyclopoids, predatory calanoids, and other predators were investigated separately. Trophic relations between these elements are established from personal and published data, and rate of their metabolism and some other physiological parameters are determined. Such functional characteristics as extent of satisfaction of food requirements of organisms belonging to various trophic groups, intensity of trophic relations, balance between production and consumption by individual elements of the community, ecological efficiency, and net and specific production of the groups distinguished, of individual trophic levels, of total zooplankton, and of the community as a whole are calculated. Variations of these characteristics along the equator with decreasing upwelling intensity are examined and their possible causes and mechanisms are discussed.

Strontium isotopes are useful tracers of fluid-rock interaction in marine hydrothermal systems and provide a potential way to quantify the amount of seawater that passes through these systems. We have determined the whole-rock Sr-isotopic compositions of a section of upper oceanic crust that formed at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise, now exposed at Hess Deep. This dataset provides the first detailed comparison for the much-studied Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) drill core from Site 504B. Whole-rock and mineral Sr concentrations indicate that Sr-exchange between hydrothermal fluids and the oceanic crust is complex, being dependent on the mineralogical reactions occurring; in particular, epidote formation takes up Sr from the fluid increasing the 87Sr/86Sr of the bulk-rock. Calculating the fluid-flux required to shift the Sr-isotopic composition of the Hess Deep sheeted-dike complex, using the approach of Bickle and Teagle (1992, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(92)90221-G) gives a fluid-flux similar to that determined for ODP Hole 504B. This suggests that the level of isotopic exchange observed in these two regions is probably typical for modern oceanic crust. Unfortunately, uncertainties in the modeling approach do not allow us to determine a fluid-flux that is directly comparable to fluxes calculated by other methods.
