In near-shore Pacific bottom sediments to the east of Japan unusually high content of free H2S ocurs. H2S resulting from bacterial reduction of sulfates from interstitial waters has a number of derivatives; pyrite dominates among them. Contents of other derivatives of H2S: sulfide sulfur and organic sulfur do not exceed 0,01%, content of organic sulfur does not exceed 0.1%. Due to reduction content of sulfates can reduce to 0,03% S. Capacity of the process of sulfate reduction, estimated by sum of all reduced forms of S - derivatives of H2S, is a function of organic matter content in sediments. Ability of bottom sediments to accumulate free H2S depends on content of reactive forms of Fe. Spatial distribution of reduced forms of S in the studied sediments is considered.

Vertical distribution of total zooplankton biomass and major taxonomic groups are investigated by layers to depths of 2500-3400 m on the basis of three series of net plankton collections. Zooplankton is most abundant above 1500-2000 m. Since true deep-water species do not occur in the Sea of Japan, biomass drops much more sharply at greater depths than it does in the ocean. Since few carnivores inhabit the deep layers, abundant remains of planktonic organisms fall to the bottom, and carnivorous detritovores feeding on these remains are dominant in deep water bottom fauna.

Vertical distribution of common zooplankton species is examined on the base of two series of layer-by-layer net catches down to depth of 3400 m. Differences between the series are significant for most species only near the surface, whereas in deeper layers character of distribution remains the same. Great depths in the Sea of Japan are populated most actively by species performing intensive daily migrations, and less actively by species continuously confined to a definite depth range. Different character of nutrition of the animals apparently determines extent of utilization of deep layers, which are usual for the species.

To assess the paleoceanographic potential of Leg 186 sediments, we investigated Quaternary calcareous nannofossil flora at Sites 1150 and 1151 in the Japan Trench. Because of the frequent occurrence of barren intervals and the lack of oxygen isotope data, a detailed paleoceanography is not feasible for these cores. We limited our study to the upper 26.07 m of the section from Hole 1150A and the upper 21.01 m of the section from Hole 1151C. The studied samples from Cores 186-1150A-1H through 3H are younger than 0.085 Ma. Core 186-1151C-1H (upper 1.92 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) is younger than 0.085 Ma, and samples between 2H-7, 5-7 cm, and 3H-CC, 5-7 cm, (9.99-21.01 mbsf) are older than 0.245 Ma and younger than 0.408 Ma.

Concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively), phosphorus (DP and PP, respectively) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) were determined at Station VITYAZ6656 in the Sea of Japan in 12 sea water samples collected in June 1972 with a 200-liter sampling bottle. Mean weighted concentrations from the surface to 2000 m were: DOC - 1.58 mg/l, POC - 17.9 µg/l, DP - 13.9 µg/l, PP - 0.185 µg/l, PON - 2.7 µg/l, the ratios were DOC:DP=100:9 and POC:PON:PP=100:14:1. Relation between POC (µg/l)and the light attenuation index "e" (1/m) for the visible part of the spectrum is described by the equation POC = ca. 170e. The maximum of POC in the upper layer correlated with the maxima of phyto- and bacterioplankton and protozoa.

The argillite sequence located at the base of the sedimentary cover on the continental slope of the Sea of Japan was studied by petrographic, palynological, and X-ray diffraction methods. Two spores-pollen complexes were distinguished in it: the Late Oligocene reflecting cooling and the Early Miocene corresponding to initiated warming. Data obtained indicate that the sequence is composed of terrigenous silty-clayey sediments that accumulated in shallow coastal-marine settings. The global sea-level rise at the Early-Middle Miocene transition, combined with regional tectonic processes, determined basin's deepening, owing to which the argillite sequence was overlain by a thick layer of Middle Miocene diatomaceous-clayey sediments. Due to tectonic movement along existing faults in the terminal Late Miocene, the argillite sequence occurring initially at depths of at least 400-500 m was locally exhumed to the basin bottom.

At sites 390 and 392 (Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 44) on the Blake nose, thoroughly lithified Lower Cretaceous limestone more than 250 m thick is abruptly overlain by a condensed sequence of Barremian to Eocene pelagic carbonate ooze. The Lower Cretaceous sediments consist of three units: limestone with moldic porosity (base), oolitic limestone, and fenestral limestone. Subaerial diagenesis of the limestone section is recorded by (1) caverns with vertical dimensions of up to 10 m, (2) stalactitic intergranular cement, and (3) meniscus sediment (or cement). Compatible with these subaerial features are mud cracks, fenestral fabrics, intraclasts, and cryptalgal structures. Inasmuch as these shallow-water and tidal-flat deposits are now beneath 2,607 m of sea water (plus 99 m of younger sediments), they serve to dramatize the apparent degree of Barremian and later subsidence of this part of the Atlantic outer continental shelf. Porosity and permeability are high in vuggy samples, which are common in the skelmoldic limestone. Cementation has destroyed most of the extensive primary porosity of the two younger units.

Microbial mats develop in a wide range of aquatic habitats, such as geothermal hot springs, hypersaline ponds, marine cold seeps or hydrothermal vents. The Nakabusa hot spring is located in the Nagano Prefecture, Japan (36.3875N, 137.75E), dense olive-green microbial mats develop in regions where the slightly alkaline, sulfidic effluent has cooled to 65°C. The microbial community of such mats was analyzed by focusing on the diversity, as well as the in situ distribution and function of bacteria involved in sulfur cycling. Microbial mat samples were kept in sterile plastic tubes (for molecular analysis) or glass bottles completely filled with hot spring water to avoid oxidation. Samples were transferred to the laboratory on ice and used for physiological experiments within 8h. Quantification of cell biovolumes was carried out based on images of mat sections hybridized with Sulfurihydrogenibium- and Chloroflexi-specific probes, and stained with DAPI. In situ hybridizations (CARD-FISH) of thin matsections showed a heterogeneous vertical distribution of Sulfurihydrogenibium and Chloroflexus. Sulfurihydrogenibium dominated near the mat surface (50% of the total mat biovolume), while Chloroflexus dominated in deeper layers (up to 64% of the total mat biovolume).
