Due to its strong gradient in salinity and small temperature gradient the Mediterranean provides an ideal setting to study the impact of salinity on the incorporation of Mg into foraminiferal tests. We have investigated tests of Globorotalia inflata and Globigerina bulloides in plankton tow and core top samples from the Western Mediterranean using ICP-OES for bulk analyses and LA-ICP-MS for analyses of individual chambers in single specimens. Mg/Ca observed in G. inflata are consistent with existing calibrations, whereas G. bulloides had significantly higher Mg/Ca than predicted, particularly in core top samples from the easterly stations. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Laser Ablation ICP-MS revealed secondary overgrowths on some tests, which could explain the observed high core top Mg/Ca. We suggest that the Mediterranean intermediate and deep water supersaturated with respect to calcite cause these overgrowths and therefore increased bulk Mg/Ca. However, the different species are influenced by diagenesis to different degrees probably due to different test morphologies. Our results provide new perspectives on reported anomalously high Mg/Ca in sedimentary foraminifera and the applicability of the Mg/Ca paleothermometry in high salinity settings, by showing that (1) part of the signal is generated by precipitation of inorganic calcite on the foraminifer test due to increased calcite saturation state of the water and (2) species with high surface-to-volume shell surfaces are potentially more affected by secondary Mg-rich calcite encrustation.

An incubation experiment at five different temperatures was used to assess the potential for adaptation of Calanus finmarchicus to future warming of the ocean. During a short term (3 h) and long term (6 day) exposure of individual females to a gradient of temperature stress, egg production and fecal pellet production were monitored to indicate secondary production and grazing rates. A longer term (10 day) exposure to elevated temperatures followed by a return to ambient sea temperatures was used to assess the potential recovery of individuals exposed to temperature stress. Females were picked out from WP2 net samples and acclimatised in 2 L bottles of GFF filtered seawater with Thalassiosira weissflogii as prey for >48 h at ambient SST. Experimental bottles were filled with filtered seawater (GFF filtered from non-toxic seawater supply) and acclimated to experimental temperature overnight (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C). Individual females were transferred into bottles using forceps and the bottles were inoculated with T. weissflogii to a final concentration of 5 µg chl L-1. Bottles were then placed into water baths and incubated for 3h or 6 d, and monitored for egg and fecal pellet production rates. A 10 day exposure experiment was used to test the potential for recovery from temperature stress, by returning females incubated at 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C back to 10 °C for 24 h and counting egg and fecal pellet production.

The "15BO1997001" dataset is based on samples collected in the spring of 1997. The whole dataset is composed of 66 samples (from 27 stations of National Monitoring Sampling Grid) with data of zooplankton species composition, abundance and biomass. Samples were collected in discrete layers 0-10, 0-20, 0-50, 10-25, 25-50, 50-100 and from bottom up to the surface at depths depending on water column stratification and the thermocline depth. Zooplankton samples were collected with vertical closing Juday net, diameter - 36cm, mesh size 150 µm. Tows were performed from surface down to bottom meters depths in discrete layers. Samples were preserved by a 4% formaldehyde sea water buffered solution. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Mesozooplankton abundance: The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). Samples were brought to volume of 25-30 ml depending upon zooplankton density and mixed intensively until all organisms were distributed randomly in the sample volume. After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Large (> 1 mm body length) and not abundant species were calculated in whole sample. Counting and measuring of organisms were made in the Dimov chamber under the stereomicroscope to the lowest taxon possible. Taxonomic identification was done at the Institute of Oceanology by Lyudmila Kamburska using the relevant taxonomic literature (Mordukhay-Boltovskoy, F.D. (Ed.). 1968, 1969,1972). Taxon-specific abundance: The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). Samples were brought to volume of 25-30 ml depending upon zooplankton density and mixed intensively until all organisms were distributed randomly in the sample volume. After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Copepods and Cladoceras were identified and enumerated; the other mesozooplankters were identified and enumerated at higher taxonomic level (commonly named as mesozooplankton groups). Large (> 1 mm body length) and not abundant species were calculated in whole sample. Data on the concentration and mineral composition of aerosols collected by nets in Cruise 18 of R/V Akadernik Fedorov on a submeridional section in the East Atlantic are presented. An empirical curve for calculating efficiency factor of a net is given for different concentrations of mineral part of aerosols. Fluxes of lithogenic part of aerosols to the sea surface are calculated. A comparison of lithogenic fluxes from the atmosphere and in the water column of the ocean showed that values of fluxes practically coincide in areas with dominating supply of dry atmospheric material. These fluxes strongly differ in the intratropical convergence zone, where deposition of aerosols depends on atmospheric precipitation, or in regions, where sedimentary material is supplied to the ocean mainly by river run-off. Residence time of aerosol lithogenic matter in the euphotic layer is calculated.
