Ninety-three samples from DSDP Leg 95, Sites 612 and 613, were examined for ostracodes to aid in the study of paleoceanography and paleodepth. In total, more than 25 genera were recovered. The most abundant and diverse ostracode assemblages were from the middle Eocene at both sites; lower and upper Eocene and Pliocene-Pleistocene assemblages were less abundant and were dominated by only three or four species. The middle Eocene assemblages were the most diagnostic of paleoenvironment and suggest water depths of 1000 to 2000 m. These assemblages are similar to other middle Eocene assemblages known from the Caribbean and North Atlantic, and signify a relatively cosmopolitan fauna that inhabited moderately deep but relatively warm bottom waters.

Two ash horizons have been identified in Hole 549, one in the upper Paleocene (basal NP9), the other in the upper Eocene (NP18); both are mixed lithic crystal tuffs of rhyolitic composition. These tuffs are absent in Hole 550 owing to unconformities, but the basal Eocene (NP10) of Hole 550 includes a series of over 50 thin bentonite layers. Intermediate plagioclase associated with these bentonites indicates that the original ash was of basaltic to andesitic composition. The bentonites are absent in Hole 549, probably because of an unconformity, but they have been identified in Hole 401 (Leg 48, Bay of Biscay). Two of the pyroclastic phases can be matched with phases previously reported for the North Sea Basin. The bentonites of Site 550 are probably equivalent to the widespread "ash series" of northwestern Europe, which may therefore be regarded as being lower Eocene in terms of Martini's calcareous nannoplankton zonation.

We detail the petrography and mineralogy of 145 basaltic rocks from the top, middle, and base of flow units identified on shipboard along with associated pyroclastic samples. Our account includes representative electron microprobe analyses of primary and secondary minerals; 28 whole-rock major-oxide analyses; 135 whole-rock analyses each for 21 trace elements; 7 whole-rock rare-earth analyses; and 77 whole-rock X-ray-diffraction analyses. These data show generally similar petrography, mineralogy, and chemistry for the basalts from all four sites; they are typically subalkaline and consanguineous with limited evolution along the tholeiite trend. Limited fractionation is indicated by immobile trace elements; some xenocrystic incorporation from more basic material also occurred. Secondary alteration products indicate early subaerial weathering followed by prolonged interaction with seawater, most likely below 150°C at Holes 552, 553A, and 554A. At Hole 555, greenschist alteration affected the deepest rocks (olivine-dolerite) penetrated, at 250-300°C.
