The first experiment of the ECOMARGE programme (ECOsystèmes de MARGE continentale) was initiated in 1983-1984, in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). The objectives of the ECOMARGE-I experiment were: to quantify the transfer of particulate matter, in general, and of organic carbon, in particular, from its introduction to and formation in the waters of the continental shelf-to its consumption or sedimentation on the shelf or its transfer to the slope and deep sea; and to understand the processes involved in that transfer, consumption and sedimentation together with their variability in space and time. The results of that experiment, from 1983 to 1988, are presented in this Special Issue. The highlights of the results are summarised in this paper. These results indicate that, of the particles formed in the waters of the continental shelf and those introduced by rivers, some are deposited as sediments on the shelf. A portion is transported offshore, however, to the slope and deep sea. The Rho^ne River, in the northeastern part of the study area, is the major source of continental material; this is transported to sea in a benthic nepheloid layer and, mostly, alongshore to the southwest. Here, it largely leaves the shelf through the canyons, especially the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon. In the offshore waters, particle concentrations and distributions show surficial, intermediate and benthic nepheloid layers. These turbid structures increase towards the southwest, corresponding to the seaward shift of the front between the coastal waters and the Liguro-Provençal cyclonic gyre, a major forcing function in the Gulf of Lions. Considering the source and fate of particles (largely biogenic from the euphotic zone and abiogenic from deeper waters) a layered system is described, which is emphasized by the concentrations of natural and artificial elements and compounds. Of the flux of particles to the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon, on a decadal scale, about 30% (as a minimum) is estimated to be stored as sediment; the remainder is transported down-canyon, towards the deep sea. The temporal variability of processes affecting this net seaward transport, of both biogenic and abiogenic material, is from hours, days to seasonal, and probably interannual, time scales. The response of the system to these variations is rapid, with pulses of increased discharge of particles from the adjacent shelf being detected in sediment traps in the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon in less than 16 days (the temporal resolution of the traps). Based upon the study of tracers of particulate matter and environmental factors (i.e. river discharge and climatic conditions), it appears that the contribution from the Rho^ne River and its adjacent area is maximal during the winter; at this time, the flow of the Liguro-Provençal Current also increases. In contrast, the maximum relative contribution of the adjacent southwesterly area to the flux in the Lacaze-Duthiers Canyon occurs in summer, during storm events.

Dismembered ophiolitic rocks including abundant sheared, serpentinized peridotite (mostly harzburgite) and minor basalts, dolerites, gabbros, and altered metabasites (mainly altered amphibolite) were drilled at most of the sites on the upper to lower Middle America Trench landward slope off Guatemala during Leg 84 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These rocks show characteristic Cataclastic deformation with zeolite facies metamorphism and alteration after amphibolite and greenschist facies metamorphism. These features indicate that the rocks originated in mid-oceanic ridge, offridge, and possibly other areas including island arc areas and were metamorphosed under a high geothermal gradient at low pressure. They were then structurally deformed and mixed within a serpentinite melange. Such ophiolite melanges may have been emplaced onto the Trench landward slope area during the initiation of subduction of the Cocos Plate. The emplacement seems to be connected to that of the Nicoya Complex in Costa Rica. The slope cover from early Eocene to Recent shows no history of these metamorphic and deformational events, therefore the emplacement of the dismembered ophiolitic rocks occurred at least before the early Eocene. The dismembered ophiolite-based Trench landward slope off Guatemala is a newly documented style of subduction, which has also recently been found at the easternmost edge of the Philippine Sea Plate along the Izu-Mariana-Yap Trench landward slope.

Glacially deformed pieces of wood, organic lake sediments and clasts of reworked peat have been collected in front of Alpine glaciers since AD 1990. The palaeoglaciological interpretation of these organic materials is related to earlier phases of glacier recession surpassing that of today's shrunken glaciers and to tree growth and peat accumulation in the valleys now occupied by the glaciers. Glacial transport of the material is indicated by wood anatomy, incorporated silt, sand and gravel particles, missing bark and deformed treerings. A total of 65 samples have been radiocarbon dated so far, and clusters of dates provide evidence of eight phases of glacier recession: 9910-9550, 9010-7980, 7250-6500, 6170-5950, 5290-3870, 3640-3360, 2740-2620 and 1530-1170 calibrated years BP. Allowing for the timelag between climatic fluctuations, glacier response and vegetation colonization, these recession phases may lag behind climatic changes by 100-200 years.

Toxaphene contamination of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) from North Atlantic waters was examined for the first time. Total toxaphene and SumCHB (sum of 11 chlorobornanes) concentrations in blubber samples ranged from 170 ± 110 and 41 ± 39 ng/g lipid weight (l.w.) for female minke whales from southeastern Greenland to 5800 ± 4100 and 1100 ± 780 ng/g l.w. for males from the North Sea, respectively. Very large variations in toxaphene concentrations among sampling areas were observed suggesting a spatial segregation of minke whales. However, much of the apparent geographical discrimination was explained by the seasonal fluctuation of animal fat mass. Patterns of CHBs in males revealed that recalcitrant CHBs were in higher proportions in animals from the more easterly areas than in animals from the more westerly areas. This trend may be influenced by the predominance of the US, over the European, input of toxaphene to North Atlantic waters.
