Equilibrium melting and controlled cooling experiments were undertaken to constrain the crystallization and cooling histories of tholeiitic basalts recovered by the Ocean Drilling Program drilling of Site 989 on the Southeast Greenland continental margin. Isothermal experiments conducted at 1 atm. and at the fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer using lava sample Section 163-989B-10R-7 yielded the equilibrium appearance sequence with decreasing temperature: olivine at 1184 ± 2ºC; plagioclase at 1177ºC ± 5ºC; augite at 1167 ± 5ºC; and pigeonite at 1113 ± 12ºC. In controlled cooling experiments using the same starting composition and cooling rates between 10ºC/hr and 2000ºC/hr, we find a significant temperature delay in the crystallization of olivine, plagioclase, and augite (relative to the equilibrium appearance temperature); pigeonite does not form under any dynamic crystallization conditions. Olivine exhibits the largest suppression in appearance temperature (e.g., 30º for 10ºC/hr and >190º at 100ºC/hr), while plagioclase shows the smallest (~10ºC at 10ºC/hr; 30ºC at 100ºC/hr, and ~80ºC at 1000ºC/hr). These results are in marked contrast to those obtained on lunar basalts, which generally show a large suppression of plagioclase crystallization and modest suppression of olivine crystallization with an increased cooling rate. The results we report agree well with the petrography of lavas recovered from Site 989. Furthermore, the textural analysis of run products, representing a large range of cooling rates and quench temperatures (1150ºC to 1000ºC), provide a framework for evaluating cooling conditions necessary for glass formation, rates of plagioclase growth, and kinetic factors governing plagioclase growth morphology. Specifically, we use these insights to interpret the textural and mineralogical features of the unusual compound flow recovered at Site 989. We concluded from the analysis that this flow most likely records multiple breakouts from a distal tube at an abrupt break in slope, possibly a fault scarp, resulting in the formation of a lava fan delta. This interpretation implies that normal faulting of the oldest lava sequences (lower and, possibly, middle series) preceded eruption of Site 989 lavas.

Data are presented on concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHC and PAH) in interstitial waters and bottom sediments of the Kara Sea compared to distribution of particulate matter and organic carbon. It was found that AHC concentrations within the water mass (aver. 16 µg/l) are mainly formed by natural processes. Distribution of AHC represents variability of hydrological and sedimentation processes in different regions of the sea. The widest ranges of the concentrations occurred in the Obskaya Guba - Kara Sea section: in water (10-310 µg/l for AHC and 0.4-7.2 ng/l for PAH) and in the surface layer of the bottom sediments (8-42 µg/l for AHC and 9-94 ng/g for PAH). Differentiation of hydrocarbons (HC) in different media follows regularities typical for marginal filters; therefore no oil and pyrogenic compounds are supplied to the open sea. In sediments contents of HC depend on variations in redox conditions in sediments and on their composition.

The need to obtain ocean color essential climate variables (OC-ECVs) using hyperspectral technology has gained increased interest in recent years. Assessing ocean color on a large scale in high latitude environments using satellite remote sensing is constrained by polar environmental conditions. Nevertheless, on a small scale we can assess ocean color using above-water and in-water remote sensing. Unfortunately, above-water remote sensing can only determine apparent optical properties leaving the sea surface and is susceptible to near surface environmental conditions for example sky and sunglint. Consequently, we have to rely on accurate in-water remote sensing as it can provide both synoptic inherent and apparent optical properties of seawater. We use normalized water leaving radiance LWN or the equivalent remote sensing reflectance RRS from 27 stations to compare the differences in above-water and in-water OC-ECVs. Analysis of above-water and in-water RRS spectra provided very good match-ups (R2 > 0.97, MSE<1.8*10**-7) for all stations. The unbiased percent differences (UPD) between above-water and in-water approaches were determined at common OC-ECVs spectral bands (410, 440, 490, 510 and 555) nm and the classic band ratio (490/555) nm. The spectral average UPD ranged (5 - 110) % and band ratio UPD ranged (0 - 12) %, the latter showing that the 5% uncertainty threshold for ocean color radiometric products is attainable. UPD analysis of these stations West of Greenland, Labrador Sea, Denmark Strait and West of Iceland also suggests that the differences observed are likely a result of environmental and instrumental perturbations.

Conductivity of 54 basalt samples from ODP Sites 768 and 770 was measured as a function of temperature and fluid salinity. Porosity was also measured for all samples, and cation exchange capacity was measured for 46 of the samples. Porosity measurements indicated that porosity is underestimated for basalts like these, unless one uses extensive drying at high vacuum. At salinities greater than 29 ppt, and throughout the range of salinity and temperatures likely in situ, sample conductivity (Co) is controlled by porosity (phi) according to the Archie relation Co = 0.22*Cw phi*1-3 (orFF = 4.5/f1.3), where Cw is conductivity of the pore fluids and FF = Cw/CO is the formation factor. At lower salinity, clay-surface conduction or microcrack conduction may dominate. We are unable to distinguish reliably between the two mechanisms, but we do detect their effects subtly at high salinity and strongly at low salinity.

Hole 433C, a multiple re-entry hole drilled in 1862 meters of water on Suiko Seamount in the central Emperor Seamounts, penetrated 387.5 meters of lava flows overlain by 163.0 meters of sediments. The recovered volcanic rocks consist of three flow units (1-3) of alkalic basalt underlain by more than 105 flows or flow lobes (Flow Units 4-67) of tholeiitic basalt. This study reports trace-element, including rare-earth element (REE), data for 25 samples from 24 of the least altered tholeiitic flows. These data are used to evaluate the origin and evolution of tholeiitic basalts from Suiko Seamount and to evaluate changes in the mantle source between the time when Suiko Seamount formed, 64.7 ± 1.1 m.y. ago (see Dalrymple et al., 1980), and the present day. Stearns (1946), Macdonald and Katsura (1964) and Macdonald (1968) have established that chemically distinct lavas erupt during four eruptive stages of development of a Hawaiian volcano. These stages, from initial to final, are shield-building, caldera-filling, post-caldera, and post-erosional. The lavas of the shield-building stage are tholeiitic basalts, which erupt rapidly and in great volume. The shield-building stage is quickly followed by caldera collapse and by the caldera-filling stage, during which the caldera is filled by tholeiitic and alkalic lavas. During the post-caldera stage, a relatively thin veneer of alkalic basalts and associated differentiated lavas are erupted, sometimes accompanied by minor eruptions of tholeiitic lava. After a period of volcanic quiescence and erosion, lavas of the nephelinitic suite, which include both alkalic basalts and strongly SiO2-undersaturated nephelinitic basalts, may erupt from satellite vents during the post-erosional stage. Many Hawaiian volcanoes develop through all four stages; but individual volcanoes have become extinct before the cycle is complete. We interpret the tholeiitic lavas drilled on Suiko Seamount to have erupted during either the shield-building or the caldera-filling stage, and the overlying alkalic flows to have erupted during either the caldera-filling or the post-caldera stage (see Kirkpatrick et al., 1980).
