The Gurile Dunarii 1977 dataset contains zooplankton data collected in April and September 1977 in 14 station allong 3 transect in front of the Danube Delta. Zooplankton sampling was undertaken at 14 stations where samples were collected using a Juday closing net in the 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50m layer (depending also on the water masses). The dataset includes samples analysed for mesozooplankton species composition and abundance. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Taxon-specific mesozooplankton abundance was count under microscope. Total abundance is the sum of the counted individuals. Total biomass Fodder, Rotifera , Ctenophora and Noctiluca was estimated using a tabel with wet weight for each species an stage.

The SESRU_02_mesozooplankton dataset contains data collected in September 2008 at 15 stations located between 37°E and 39.5°E and between 42.4°N and 44.5°N in the north-eastern Black Sea. Samples were collected with a Juday net. Juday net: Vertical tows of a closing Juday net, with mouth area 0.1 m**2, mesh size 180 µm. Samples were taken from different layers. Towing speed: 1m/s. Samples were preserved by a 4% formaldehyde sea water buffered solution. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Integrated samples were taken from the lower boundary of the oxic zone to the surface, stratified samples were taken according to CTD-profiles: samples were taken from the following depth strata: 1) the upper mixed layer (UML); 2) the layer of high temperature gradients (from the upper boundary of thermocline to the depth of 8 deg C temperature); 3) cold Intermediate layer (CIL) - the layer with the T< 8 deg C; 4) from the depth of sigma theta = 15.8 (oxycline) to the lower boundary of CIL; 5) from the depth of sigma theta = 16.2 to the depth of sigma theta = 15.8. Samples were analysed for zooplankton species and stage composition and abundance. The entire sample or an aliquot (1/2 to ¼) was analyzed under the binocular microscope. Mesozooplankton species and stages were identified and enumerated; meroplankton were identified and enumerated at higher taxonomic level. Taxonomic identification was done at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology using the relevant taxonomic literature (Rose, 1933, Brodsky, 1950 and Internet resources).

The SES_GR2_Copepod Ingestion on ciliates and phytoplankton dataset is based on samples taken during August-September 2008 in Ionian Sea, Libyan Sea, Southern Aegean Sea and Northern Aegean Sea. Ingestion rates were estimated from experiments performed at all the third priority stations during the cruise according to DoW of Sesame project. Copepods for the experiments were obtained with slow non-quantitative tows from the upper 100 m layer of the water column using 200 µm mesh size nets fitted with a large non-filtering cod end. For the grazing experiments we used the following copepod species: Clausocalanus furcatus, Oithona spp. Temora stylifera and Acartia spp according to the relevant reference (Bamstedt et al. 2000). Copepod clearance rates on ciliates were calculated according to Frost equations (Frost 1972). Ingestion rates were calculated by multiplying clearance rates by the initial standing stocks (Bamstedt et al. 2000).

Contents and distribution of particulate lipids were studied by thin-layer chromatography technique with flame ionization detection (Iatroscan TH-10) along the transect from the Ob River towards the Kara Sea. Lipid contents range from 18.4 to 266 µg/l with, average 84.97 µg/l, which comprises from 4.06 to 58.32 % of total particulate organic matter. Principal constituents of particulate lipids are hydrocarbons (32.14 % of total lipids on the average), polar compounds (29.85 %), wax and sterol esters (13.04 %), and mono- and diglycerides (12.52 %). Secondary components are presented by fatty acid esters (5.14 %), free fatty acids (4.56 %), triglycerides (2.32 %), and sterols (1.04 %). Specific composition of particulate lipids along the Ob River - Kara Sea transect is formed under strong impact of river run-off. Particulate lipid composition reflects differences between processes of organic matter transformation in estuarine and marine parts of the transect, as well as peculiarities of species composition of Arctic living organisms.

Ichthyoplankton density (fish eggs and larvae) and bulk zooplankton biomass in September 2010 were determined for 10 stations in the northern Benguela upwelling system, based on oblique Multinet hauls during the RRS Discovery D356 cruise. A HYDROBIOS Multinet, type Midi (0.25 m**2 mouth area) was equipped with five nets of 500 µm-mesh size, temperature and oxygen probes, and an inner and outer flow meter to monitor the net's trajectory (for volume filtered calculations) as well as net clogging. The Multinet was handled over the side, towed horizontally at 2 knots. Winch speed when fearing was 0.5 or 0.3 m/s, heaving velocity 0.2 - 0.3 m/s. The Multinet was towed obliquely at 10 stations sampling the upper 200 m of the water column, which were divided into five different depth strata after inspection of temperature and oxygen concentration depth profiles. Ichthyoplankton densities and zooplankton biomass were calculated for each depth stratum (=single net) from total abundance and the volume of water filtered [individuals per m**3 and g wet weight per m**3, respectively]. In addition, densities and biomass were integrated over the area for each station [individuals per m**2], as sum of calculations for each net: Sum ([individuals per m**3]*Delta(depth bot[m]-depth top [m]).
