This petrological study of the lower Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE1a) focused on the nature of the organic-rich interval as well as the tuffaceous units above and below it. The volcaniclastic debris deposited just prior to the OAE1a is consistent with reactivation of volcanic centers across the Shatsky Rise, concurrent with volcanism on the Ontong Java Plateau. This reactivation may have been responsible for the sub-OAE1a unconformity. Soon after this volcanic pulse, anomalous amounts of organic matter accumulated on the rise, forming a black shale horizon. The complex textures in the organic-rich intervals suggest a history of periodic anoxia, overprinted by bioturbation. Components include pellets, radiolarians, and fish debris. The presence of carbonate-cemented radiolarite under the OAE1a intervals suggests that there has been large-scale remobilization of carbonate in the system, which in turn may explain the absence of calcareous microfossils in the section. The volcanic debris in the overlying tuffaceous interval differs in that it is significantly epiclastic and glauconitic. It was likely derived from an emergent volcanic edifice.

Pb, Nd, and Sr isotopic results for lavas of the Cretaceous Ontong Java and Manihiki oceanic plateaus fall well within the modern-day oceanic island or hot pot field. The data provide no evidence of old continental basements but indicate a major involvement of 'Kerguelen-type' or 'EM-I'-like mantle in the sources of both plateaus, which appear to have probably been formed, at least in part, by hotspots. However, the presently active hotspots that Pacific plate reconstructions suggest might have been possible plateau sources lack Kerguelen-type isotopic compositions. Either these hotspots did not participate in the formation of the two plateaus, or if they did, Kerguelen-type material must have been volumetrically much more important early in their existence. Two hypotheses for the origins of these plateaus which involve hotspot sources are consistent with the sparse available geochemical, geochronological and geophysical data. The first holds that the plateaus formed cataclysmically in association with surfacing plume heads; the second posits a relatively steady but robust hotspot at or near a ridge crest and requires a much longer period of formation. A near-ridge origin appears to be indicated by evidence that most of the Pacific plateaus were built largely on relatively young ocean crust. However, we suggest that a near-ridge origin is also compatible with the plume head concept in that plume heads appear very likely to become associated with spreading axes through their influence on rift propagation, which should be substantially greater than for ordinary hotspots. In either case, the lack of hotspot tracks (seamount chains) attached to the two plateaus would be a consequence of ridge migration or rift propagation in a near-ridge setting.

Anisotropy in compressional-wave velocities in sedimentary rocks recovered by DSDP has been recognized by several investigators (Boyce, 1976; Tucholke et al., 1976; Carlson and Christensen, 1977). The anisotropy is also observed at elevated pressures in laboratory experiments, and thus probably persists at depth in some calcareous rocks (Schreiber et al., 1972; Christensen et al., 1973; Carlson and Christensen, 1979). Carlson and Christensen (1979) suggested that the observed velocity anisotropy was produced not by the alignment of cracks but by the alignment of c axes of calcite perpendicular to bedding during compaction, diagenesis, and recrystallization. On DSDP Leg 62, calcareous rocks were recovered from the western Mid-Pacific Mountains (sub-bottom depths of 452-823 m, Site 463) and southern Hess Rise (276-412 m, Site 465). Most of the calcareous rocks are horizontally laminated and color-banded, and ages are early Cenomanian to late Barremian (Site 463 and 465 reports, this volume). The purpose of this study is to confirm the velocity anisotropy in the calcareous rocks and to identify any relationship of anistropy to bulk density, mean velocity, and burial depth.

On Leg 55, cores were takenfrom three seamounts in the Emperor Seamount chain: Ojin, Nintoku, and Suiko Seamounts. At the drilling sites the water depth was 1300 to 1700 meters; the maximum thickness of the sediment column was 180 meters at Site 433.
