The relatively fresh basement basaltic rocks cored at Sites 794 and 797 during ODP Legs 127 and 128 show compositional variations suggesting the following: (1) the aphyric rocks might be differentiated from compositional equivalents of the aphyric sample with the lowest FeO*/MgO (Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm); and (2) the plagioclase-phyric rocks (i.e., another constituent of the basement basaltic rocks from the sites) may be derivatives from the same parents; in this case, however, crystallized plagioclase was not effectively removed. Melting experiments were conducted for Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm, and the differentiation processes for the basement basaltic rocks were assessed. The high-pressure melting-phase relation can not account for the compositional variation of the aphyric rocks, suggesting that the variation was developed at relatively low pressure where olivine and plagioclase fractionation was followed by Ca-rich clinopyroxene fractionation. The density of Sample 127-797C-12R-4,35-37 cm, is comparable to that of plagioclase at some depth, but at still relatively low pressure, making it possible that the liquidus plagioclase was retained in the successive liquids to produce the plagioclase-phyric rocks. According to backtrack calculation assuming the olivine maximum fractionation, Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm, was differentiated from primary picritic high-Al basalt magma. The estimated primary magma composition was experimentally proved to coexist with harzburgite mantle at about 14 kbar, suggesting relatively shallow production (approximately 40-50 km below surface) of the rifting-related primary magma.

A unique set of geochemical pore-water data, characterizing the sulfate reduction and uppermost methanogenic zones, has been collected at the Blake Ridge (offshore southeastern North America) from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 cores and piston cores. The d13C values of dissolved CO2 (sum CO2) are as 13C-depleted as -37.7 per mil PDB (Site 995) at the sulfate-methane interface, reflecting a substantial contribution of isotopically light carbon from methane. Although the geochemical system is complex and difficult to fully quantify, we use two methods to constrain and illustrate the intensity of anaerobic methane oxidation in Blake Ridge sediments. An estimate using a two-component mixing model suggests that ~24% of the carbon residing in the sum CO2 pool is derived from biogenic methane. Independent diagenetic modeling of a methane concentration profile (Site 995) indicates that peak methane oxidation rates approach 0.005 µmol/cm**3/yr, and that anaerobic methane oxidation is responsible for consuming ~35% of the total sulfate flux into the sediments. Thus, anaerobic methane oxidation is a significant biogeochemical sink for sulfate, and must affect interstitial sulfate concentrations and sulfate gradients. Such high proportions of sulfate depletion because of anaerobic methane oxidation are largely undocumented in continental rise sediments with overlying oxic bottom waters. We infer that the additional amount of sulfate depleted through anaerobic methane oxidation, fueled by methane flux from below, causes steeper sulfate gradients above methane-rich sediments. Similar pore water chemistries should occur at other methane-rich, continental-rise settings associated with gas hydrates.

The terrigenous mineral fraction of sediments recovered by drilling during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 167 at Sites 1018 and 1020 is used to evaluate changes in the source and transport of fine-grained terrigenous sediment and its relation to regional climates and the paleoceanographic evolution of the California Current system during the late Pleistocene. Preliminary time scales developed by correlation of oxygen isotope stratigraphies with the global SPECMAP record show average linear sedimentation rates in excess of 100 m/m.y., which provide an opportunity for high-resolution studies of terrigenous flux, grain size, and mineralogy. The mass flux of terrigenous minerals at Site 1018 varies from 5 to 30 g/(cm**2 x k.y.) and displays a general trend toward increased flux during glacials. The terrigenous record at Site 1020 shows a similar pattern of increased glacial input, but overall accumulation rates are significantly lower. Spectral analysis demonstrates that most of this variability is concentrated in frequency bands related to orbital cycles of eccentricity, tilt, and precession. Detailed grain-size analysis performed on the isolated terrigenous mineral fraction shows that sediments from Site 1018 are associated with higher energy transport and depositional regimes than those found at Site 1020. Grain-size data are remarkably uniform throughout the last 500 k.y., with no discernible difference observed between glacial and interglacial size distributions within each site. X-ray diffraction analysis of the <2-µm clay component suggests that the deposition of minerals found at Site 1020 is consistent with transport from a southern source during intervals of increased terrigenous input.

Holes drilled into the volcanic and ultrabasic basement of the Izu-Ogasawara and Mariana forearc terranes during Leg 125 provide data on some of the earliest lithosphere created after the start of Eocene subduction in the Western Pacific. The volcanic basement contains three boninite series and one tholeiite series. (1) Eocene low-Ca boninite and low-Ca bronzite andesite pillow lavas and dikes dominate the lowermost part of the deep crustal section through the outer-arc high at Site 786. (2) Eocene intermediate-Ca boninite and its fractionation products (bronzite andesite, andesite, dacite, and rhyolite) make up the main part of the boninitic edifice at Site 786. (3) Early Oligocene intermediate-Ca to high-Ca boninite sills or dikes intrude the edifice and perhaps feed an uppermost breccia unit at Site 786. (4) Eocene or Early Oligocene tholeiitic andesite, dacite, and rhyolite form the uppermost part of the outer-arc high at Site 782. All four groups can be explained by remelting above a subduction zone of oceanic mantle lithosphere that has been depleted by its previous episode of partial melting at an ocean ridge. We estimate that the average boninite source had lost 10-15 wt% of melt at the ridge before undergoing further melting (5-10%) shortly after subduction started. The composition of the harzburgite (<2% clinopyroxene, Fo content of about 92%) indicates that it underwent a total of about 25% melting with respect to a fertile MORB mantle. The low concentration of Nb in the boninite indicates that the oceanic lithosphere prior to subduction was not enriched by any asthenospheric (OIB) component. The subduction component is characterized by (1) high Zr and Hf contents relative to Sm, Ti, Y, and middle-heavy REE, (2) light REE-enrichment, (3) low contents of Nb and Ta relative to Th, Rb, or La, (4) high contents of Na and Al, and (5) Pb isotopes on the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line. This component is unlike any subduction component from active arc volcanoes in the Izu-Mariana region or elsewhere. Modeling suggests that these characteristics fit a trondhjemitic melt from slab fusion in amphibolite facies. The resulting metasomatized mantle may have contained about 0.15 wt% water. The overall melting regime is constrained by experimental data to shallow depths and high temperatures (1250? C and 1.5 kb for an average boninite) of boninite segregation. We thus envisage that boninites were generated by decompression melting of a diapir of metasomatized residual MORB mantle leaving the harzburgites as the uppermost, most depleted residue from this second stage of melting. Thermal constraints require that both subducted lithosphere and overlying oceanic lithosphere of the mantle wedge be very young at the time of boninite genesis. This conclusion is consistent with models in which an active transform fault offsetting two ridge axes is placed under compression or transpression following the Eocene plate reorganization in the Pacific. Comparison between Leg 125 boninites and boninites and related rocks elsewhere in the Western Pacific highlights large regional differences in petrogenesis in terms of mantle mineralogy, degree of partial melting, composition of subduction components, and the nature of pre-subduction lithosphere. It is likely that, on a regional scale, the initiation of subduction involved subducted crust and lithospheric mantle wedge of a range of ages and compositions, as might be expected in this type of tectonic setting.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 178, eight holes were drilled at three sites (1095, 1096, and 1101) on the continental rise along the western Antarctic Peninsula. The rise sediments proved to be good paleomagnetic recorders and provided continuous magnetostratigraphic records at all three sites. Biosiliceous microfossils, particularly diatoms and radiolarians, were present in the upper Miocene through lower Pliocene sections. In the upper Pliocene to Pleistocene sections, biosiliceous microfossils were rare but calcareous nannofossils and foraminifers were present. This paper summarizes the biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy of Leg 178 continental rise sites and is the first attempt at direct calibration of Antarctic biostratigraphic events to the geomagnetic polarity timescale in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean.

Analyses of the Sr2+ concentrations of interstitial fluids obtained from sediments squeezed during Leg 115 were used to estimate the rates and total amount of recrystallization of biogenic carbonates. The total amount of recrystallization calculated using this method varies from less than 1 % in sediments at Site 706 to more than 40% at Site 709 in sediments of 47 Ma. Five of the sites drilled during Leg 115 (Sites 707 through 711) were drilled in a depth transect within a restricted geographic area so that theoretically they received similar amounts of sediment input. Of these, the maximum rate of recrystallization occurred in the upper 50 m of Site 710 (3812 m). The amount of recrystallization decreased with increasing water depth at Sites 708 (4096 m) and 711 (4428 m), presumably as a result of the fact that most of the reactive calcium carbonate was dissolved before burial. We also observed significant alkalinity deficits at many of these sites, a condition which most likely resulted from the precipitation of calcium carbonate either in the sedimentary column, or during retrieval of the core. Precipitation of CaCO3 as a result of pressure changes during core retrieval was confirmed by the comparison of Ca2+ and alkalinity from water samples obtained using the in-situ sampler and squeezed from the sediments. At Sites 707 and 716, the shallowest sites, no calcium or alkalinity deficits were present. In spite of our estimations of as much as 45% recrystallization at Site 709, all the carbonate sites exhibited what would be previously considered conservative Ca2+/Mg2+ profiles, which varied from -1 to -0.5. By virtue of the position of these sites relative to known basaltic basement or through the actual penetration of basalt (i.e., Sites 706, 707 and 712), these sites are all known to be underlain by basalt. Our results suggest, therefore, that more positive Ca2 + /Mg2+ gradients cannot necessarily be used as indicators of the nature of basement material.

Numerous fresh ash layers comprise about 0.3% by volume of Neogene to Holocene sediments drilled at Leg 104 Sites 642 and 643 (Vøring Plateau, North Atlantic). Median grain sizes of the ashes are about 100 /µm and maximum grain sizes range up to 1200 µm. Rhyolitic pumice shards dominate, with minor bubble wall shards. Basaltic shards are poorly vesicular and blocky or round. Phenocrystic plagioclase, zircon, and clinopyroxene occur in the rhyolitic, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene phenocrysts and basaltic lithics in the basaltic tephra. Quartz, amphibole, clinozoisite, and rutile are interpreted as xenocrysts. All ash layers are well-sorted and represent distal fallout from major explosive eruptions. Most ashes are rhyolitic (high-K and low-K) in composition, some are bimodal (tholeiitic and rhyolitic). Early Miocene tephra is dominantly basaltic. Iceland is inferred to be the likely source region for most ashes. Late Miocene high-K rhyolites may have originated from the K-rich Jan Mayen magmatic province. One Quaternary layer with biotite and alkali feldspar phenocrysts may have been derived from Jan Mayen Island. Four individual Pliocene to Holocene ash layers from Sites 642 and 643 can be correlated fairly well. Upper Miocene layers are tentatively correlated as a sequence between Sites 642 and 643. Average calculated layer frequencies are about three layers/m.y. through the Pliocene and Pleistocene and five to eight layers per m.y. through the middle and late Miocene, suggesting rather continuous volcanic activity in the North Atlantic. Episodic magmatic activity during Neogene epochs in this part of the North Atlantic, as postulated in the literature, cannot be confirmed.

Synthetic seismograms provide a crucial link between lithologic variations within a drill hole and reflectors on seismic profiles crossing the site. In essence, they provide a ground-truth for the interpretation of seismic data. Using a combination of core and logging data, we created synthetic seismograms for Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1165 and 1166, drilled during Leg 188, and Site 742, drilled during Leg 119, all in Prydz Bay, Antarctica. Results from Site 1165 suggest that coring penetrated a target reflector initially thought to represent the onset of drift sedimentation, but the lithologic change across the boundary does not show a change from predrift to drift sediments. The origin of a shallow reflector packet in the seismic line across Site 1166 and a line connecting Sites 1166 and 742 was resolved into its constituent sources, as this reflector occurs in a region of large-scale, narrowly spaced impedance changes. Furthermore, Site 1166 was situated in a fluvio-deltaic system with widely variable geology, and bed thickness changes were estimated between the site and both seismic lines.

An intensive geochemical investigation was conducted on carbonate sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 182. Four trace elements in 635 sediment samples from Sites 1126-1132 on the Great Australian Bight were examined by atomic absorption spectrometry on the acid-soluble fraction. Downhole profiles of these elements exhibit complicated fluctuations throughout the late Eocene to Pleistocene, principally because of the variations in the acid-soluble fraction. The purpose of this study is to present initial results on the geochemical composition of Cenozoic cool-water carbonates as a basis for a future detailed investigation to determine the paleoenvironment of a carbonate-dominated continental margin during the evolution of the Southern Ocean.

This petrological study of the lower Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE1a) focused on the nature of the organic-rich interval as well as the tuffaceous units above and below it. The volcaniclastic debris deposited just prior to the OAE1a is consistent with reactivation of volcanic centers across the Shatsky Rise, concurrent with volcanism on the Ontong Java Plateau. This reactivation may have been responsible for the sub-OAE1a unconformity. Soon after this volcanic pulse, anomalous amounts of organic matter accumulated on the rise, forming a black shale horizon. The complex textures in the organic-rich intervals suggest a history of periodic anoxia, overprinted by bioturbation. Components include pellets, radiolarians, and fish debris. The presence of carbonate-cemented radiolarite under the OAE1a intervals suggests that there has been large-scale remobilization of carbonate in the system, which in turn may explain the absence of calcareous microfossils in the section. The volcanic debris in the overlying tuffaceous interval differs in that it is significantly epiclastic and glauconitic. It was likely derived from an emergent volcanic edifice.

Oxygen and carbon isotopic records have been developed for the Cenozoic carbonate oozes of Sites 752, 754, 756, and 757 based on the analysis of monospecific benthic foraminifers. The intent of this report is to provide a basic isotopic stratigraphy for use in other paleoceanographic studies. The oxygen isotope record displays the enrichments associated with cooling or ice volume buildup at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, in the middle Miocene, and in the upper Pliocene. The carbon isotopic record contains the Chron 16 enrichment in the lower Miocene and the Chron 6 depletion in the uppermost Miocene.

A high-resolution pollen record (sampling interval averages 820 years) has been obtained from ODP Site 1144 (water depth 2037 m), northern South China Sea. The 504-m sequence (in composition length) covers the last 1.03 million years according to micropaleontological and isotopic stratigraphy. The pollen assemblages are characterized by high proportions of Pinus and herb pollen, and by their frequent alternations. Based on these alternations, 29 pollen zones have been recognized that are closely correlated to the Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages (MIS) 1-29. Pinus- dominant pollen zones correspond to interglacial periods with lighter delta18O values, while herb-marked ones relate to the heavier delta18O stages assigned to glacials. Judging from the pollen data, the exposed northern continental shelf of the South China Sea during the glacials was covered by grassland, and the extensive northern shelf has formed only since MIS 6 (ca. 150 ka), probably as a result of tectonic subsidence. Tree pollen influx values are indicative of winter monsoon which began to intensify 600 ka ago. The summer monsoon variations can be approximated by the fern percentage within the total pollen and spore abundance, and the result shows high values in general occurring at interglacials, with the maxima at MIS 15, 5e and 1. The relatively high fern percentage with smaller amplitude in variations before 600 ka might suggest more stable humid conditions before the intensification of winter monsoon.
