Ephemeral polar glaciations during the middle-to-late Eocene (48-34 Ma) have been proposed based on far-field ice volume proxy records and near-field glacigenic sediments, although the scale, timing, and duration of these events are poorly constrained. Here we confirm the existence of a transient cool event within a new high-resolution benthic foraminiferal d18O record at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 738 (Kerguelen Plateau; Southern Ocean). This event, named the Priabonian oxygen isotope maximum (PrOM) Event, lasted ~140 kyr and is tentatively placed within magnetochron C17n.1n (~37.3 Ma) based on the correlation to ODP Site 689 (Maud Rise, Southern Ocean). A contemporaneous change in the provenance of sediments delivered to the Kerguelen Plateau occurs at the study site, determined from the <63 µm fraction of decarbonated and reductively leached sediment samples. Changes in the mixture of bottom waters, based on fossil fish tooth epsilon-Nd, were less pronounced and slower relative to the benthic d18O and terrigenous epsilon-Nd changes. Terrigenous sediment epsilon-Nd values rapidly shifted to less radiogenic signatures at the onset of the PrOM Event, indicating an abrupt change in provenance favoring ancient sources such as the Paleoproterozoic East Antarctic craton. Bottom water epsilon-Nd reached a minimum value during the PrOM Event, although the shift begins much earlier than the terrigenous epsilon-Nd excursion. The origin of the abrupt change in terrigenous sediment provenance is compatible with a change in Antarctic terrigenous sediment flux and/or source as opposed to a reorganization of ocean currents. A change in terrigenous flux and/or source of Antarctic sediments during the oxygen isotope maximum suggests a combination of cooling and ice growth in East Antarctica during the early late Eocene.

Palynological records from the Congo fan reveal environmental change in equatorial Africa occurring 1.05 Ma ago, 100 k.y. before the mid-Pleistocene climatic shift at 0.9 Ma. Prior to 1.05 Ma, a glacial-interglacial rhythm is not obvious in the African vegetation variation. Afterwards, Podocarpus spread in the mountains of central Africa mainly during glacials and Congo River discharge decreased. The sequence of vegetation variation associated with the mid-Pleistocene glacials and interglacials differed from that observed during the late Pleistocene. Between 0.9 and 0.6 Ma, interglacials were characterized by warm dry conditions and glacials were characterized by cool humid conditions, while during the past 0.2 Ma glacials were cold and dry and interglacials warm and humid. Our data indicate that before the Northern Hemisphere ice caps dramatically increased in size (0.9-0.6 Ma), low-latitude climate forcing and response in the tropics played an important role in the initiation of 100 k.y. ice-age cycles. During the mid to late Pleistocene, however, the climate conditions in the tropics were increasingly influenced by the glacial-interglacial variations of continental ice sheets.

The concentration of dissolved Sr and the distribution of 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in Leg 113 interstitial waters may be interpreted in terms of mixing of Sr from four different reservoirs: indigenous seawater, marine carbonate minerals, and basaltic and siliceous detrital material. The input to the pore water from these reservoirs is determined by the reactivity of the reservoir rather than its size. The presence of strontium derived from siliceous detrital material is unequivocally demonstrated in the pore waters of the hemipelagic deposits, and is also significant in the calcareous Maud Rise sediments due to the unusually low degree of carbonate recrystallization. Also, alteration of basic volcanic material is important at several sites.

Interstitial waters from four sites of the Japan Sea (794 to 797) have been analyzed for stable isotopes (delta D, delta11B, delta18O, and delta34S) and 87Sr/86Sr, besides major and minor ions. The isotopic composition is dominated by organic matter degradation, alteration of ash layers and volcaniclastic sands, silica transformation (opal A/CT), and basement alteration. Organic matter degradation and corresponding sulfate reduction leads to 32S depletion and is dependent upon sedimentation rate. The remaining sulfate reservoir is characterized by very "heavy" delta34S ratios, up to +93 ? (rel. CDT = Canyon Diabolo Troilite). "Barite fronts," which may develop in such sediments, should also be characterized by very "heavy" sulfur isotopes. The alteration of volcaniclastic material in the Quaternary sections influences the delta18O (-1.5 ? shift) and delta11B (desorption and later adsorption of "labile"11B). A pronounced positive delta11B anomaly at Site 795 represents the depth range of preferential 10B uptake by alteration products of the ash layers. At Site 796 delta D, delta11B, and 87Sr/86Sr are severely affected by alteration processes of volcaniclastic sands. The opal A/CT transformation may influence the oxygen isotopes and serves as a potential source for B, which is liberated at this interval at Site 795. This positive B anomaly is not reflected in the delta11B profile. Basement alteration processes dominate the sedimentary sequence below the opal A/CT transition, which serves as a chemical and physical boundary. The decreases in delta D and delta18O are probably related to a "paleo ocean water reservoir" situated in the permeable Layer II of the oceanic crust, as is indicated by the positive correlation between these two parameters. Besides Mg, alkalies and delta18O basement rocks also serve as a sink for 11 B (Site 795) and are the source for the Ca and Sr increases, as is documented by the less radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratio. 87Sr/86Sr ratios for the lowermost pore waters from Site 795 (0.70529) are comparable to those from volcaniclastic rocks from the "Green Tuff' region (0.704 to 0.706) and oil field brines from the Niigata Oil Field.

Hydrothermal pyrite samples from Holes 477, 477A, and 478 have sulfur isotope values ranging from about 10 to 11 per mil. Samples with negative sulfur isotope values generally have low sulfide sulfur contents and reflect mixed bacterial and hydrothermal sulfur sources. At higher sulfur contents, the hydrothermal component predominates, producing positive isotope values. Hydrothermal sulfide derives from reduction of seawater sulfate and may contain a significant basaltic component. Hydrothermal anhydrite is restricted to a narrow zone beneath a dolerite sill at Site 477 and, because of partial sulfate reduction in the circulating waters, has isotopic values (23.5-25 per mil), heavier than seawater.

Under modern conditions only North Pacific Intermediate Water is formed in the northwest Pacific Ocean. This situation might have changed in the past. Recent studies with general circulation models indicate a switch to deep-water formation in the northwest Pacific during Heinrich Stadial 1 (17.5-15.0 ka) of the last glacial termination. Reconstructions of past ventilation changes based on paleoceanographic proxy records are still insufficient to test whether a deglacial mode of deep-water formation in the North Pacific Ocean existed. Here we present deglacial ventilation records based on radiocarbon-derived ventilation ages in combination with epibenthic stable carbon isotopes from the northwest Pacific including the Okhotsk Sea and Bering Sea, the two potential source regions for past North Pacific ventilation changes. Evidence for most rigorous ventilation of the intermediate-depth North Pacific occurred during Heinrich Stadial 1 and the Younger Dryas, simultaneous to significant reductions in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Concurrent changes in d13C and ventilation ages point to the Okhotsk Sea as driver of millennial-scale changes in North Pacific Intermediate Water ventilation during the last deglaciation. Our records additionally indicate that changes in the d13C intermediate-water (700-1750 m water depth) signature and radiocarbon-derived ventilation ages are in antiphase to those of the deep North Pacific Ocean (>2100 m water depth) during the last glacial termination. Thus, intermediate- and deep-water masses of the northwest Pacific have a differing ventilation history during the last deglaciation.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188 to Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, several of the shipboard scientists formed the High-Resolution Integrated Stratigraphy Committee (HiRISC). The committee was established in order to furnish an integrated data set from the Pliocene portion of Site 1165 as a contribution to the ongoing debate about Pliocene climate and climate evolution in Antarctica. The proxies determined in our various laboratories were the following: magnetostratigraphy and magnetic properties, grain-size distributions (granulometry), near-ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectrophotometry, calcium carbonate content, characteristics of foraminifer, diatom, and radiolarian content, clay mineral composition, and stable isotopes. In addition to the HiRISC samples, other data sets contained in this report are subsets of much larger data sets. We included these subsets in order to provide the reader with a convenient integrated data set of Pliocene-Pleistocene strata from the East Antarctic continental margin. The data are presented in the form of 14 graphs (in addition to the site map). Text and figure captions guide the reader to the original data sets. Some preliminary interpretations are given at the end of the manuscript.

Isotopic compositions of uranium (234U and 238U) and thorium (230Th and 232Th) were measured in metalliferous sediments from the western flank of the East Pacific Rise at 21°-22°S, in the area of hydrothermal activity and massive sulfide accumulation at the axis of the EPR. Concentration of 232Th (on the carbonate-free base) is consistent with composition of mafic extrusive rocks; isotope ratios 232Th/238U and 234U/238U indicate that about 70% of uranium passes into sediments from sea water with hydrothermal iron hydroxide. Mean sedimentation rates are calculated for seven cores by the nonequilibrium 230Th method with use of the constant concentration model. Flux of 230Th to bottom sediments is calculated and its mean value is used to determine sedimentation rate in four other cores. The constant flux model is used to calculate change of sedimentation rate with depth for seven cores over time interval of 100-300 ky. Sedimentation rates varied not much (0.3-0.6 cm/ky). The greatest changes occurred in two cores: one located near massive sulfide structures, and another near the spreading axis. Determinations of mean rates by the radiocarbon method and the nonequilibrium thorium method are in good agreement.

Holes drilled into the volcanic and ultrabasic basement of the Izu-Ogasawara and Mariana forearc terranes during Leg 125 provide data on some of the earliest lithosphere created after the start of Eocene subduction in the Western Pacific. The volcanic basement contains three boninite series and one tholeiite series. (1) Eocene low-Ca boninite and low-Ca bronzite andesite pillow lavas and dikes dominate the lowermost part of the deep crustal section through the outer-arc high at Site 786. (2) Eocene intermediate-Ca boninite and its fractionation products (bronzite andesite, andesite, dacite, and rhyolite) make up the main part of the boninitic edifice at Site 786. (3) Early Oligocene intermediate-Ca to high-Ca boninite sills or dikes intrude the edifice and perhaps feed an uppermost breccia unit at Site 786. (4) Eocene or Early Oligocene tholeiitic andesite, dacite, and rhyolite form the uppermost part of the outer-arc high at Site 782. All four groups can be explained by remelting above a subduction zone of oceanic mantle lithosphere that has been depleted by its previous episode of partial melting at an ocean ridge. We estimate that the average boninite source had lost 10-15 wt% of melt at the ridge before undergoing further melting (5-10%) shortly after subduction started. The composition of the harzburgite (<2% clinopyroxene, Fo content of about 92%) indicates that it underwent a total of about 25% melting with respect to a fertile MORB mantle. The low concentration of Nb in the boninite indicates that the oceanic lithosphere prior to subduction was not enriched by any asthenospheric (OIB) component. The subduction component is characterized by (1) high Zr and Hf contents relative to Sm, Ti, Y, and middle-heavy REE, (2) light REE-enrichment, (3) low contents of Nb and Ta relative to Th, Rb, or La, (4) high contents of Na and Al, and (5) Pb isotopes on the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line. This component is unlike any subduction component from active arc volcanoes in the Izu-Mariana region or elsewhere. Modeling suggests that these characteristics fit a trondhjemitic melt from slab fusion in amphibolite facies. The resulting metasomatized mantle may have contained about 0.15 wt% water. The overall melting regime is constrained by experimental data to shallow depths and high temperatures (1250? C and 1.5 kb for an average boninite) of boninite segregation. We thus envisage that boninites were generated by decompression melting of a diapir of metasomatized residual MORB mantle leaving the harzburgites as the uppermost, most depleted residue from this second stage of melting. Thermal constraints require that both subducted lithosphere and overlying oceanic lithosphere of the mantle wedge be very young at the time of boninite genesis. This conclusion is consistent with models in which an active transform fault offsetting two ridge axes is placed under compression or transpression following the Eocene plate reorganization in the Pacific. Comparison between Leg 125 boninites and boninites and related rocks elsewhere in the Western Pacific highlights large regional differences in petrogenesis in terms of mantle mineralogy, degree of partial melting, composition of subduction components, and the nature of pre-subduction lithosphere. It is likely that, on a regional scale, the initiation of subduction involved subducted crust and lithospheric mantle wedge of a range of ages and compositions, as might be expected in this type of tectonic setting.

Strontium isotope stratigraphy was used to date 5 discrete horizons within the CRP-3 drillhole. A single in situ modiolid bivalve fragment at 10.88 mbsf gives an age of 30.9 (±0.8) Ma for the associated sediment. The four remaining well preserved fragments recovered from 29.94-190.31 mbsf are within error of this age, indicating a high sedimentation rate and suggesting little time is missing in disconformities. The diagenetic alteration of carbonate macrofossils by continental fluids (and possibly seawater) is a common feature to 320 mbsf.

Age dating of Paleogene diamictites from ODP Site 739 in Prydz Bay with marine microfossils (diatoms and calcareous nannofossils) suggests the build-up of a major East Antarctic ice shield in latest Eocene to earliest Oligocene time, about 35-38 m.y. ago. Strontium isotopic analyses of small mollusk remains found within these diamictites, however, yield younger ages ranging from 29 to 23 Ma (i.e., latest early Oligocene to earliest Miocene). These age discrepancies could be caused by repeated glacial reworking of microfossils, macrofossils, and sediment clasts through the late Oligocene or, alternatively, by ion exchange in the still aragonitic mollusk shells.

Paleogene stable oxygen and carbon isotopes were measured in formainifera from ODP Sites 689 and 690 at Maud Rise in the Atlantic Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean, and from Sites 738, 744, 748 and 749 at the southern Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Ocean sector. These data were compared with sedimentological data from the same sample set. Both benthic and planktic d18O values document a cooling trend beginning around 49.5 Ma at all sites. During the late middle Eocene planktic d18O values indicate a steepening latitudinal temperature gradient from 14°C at the northern sites towards 10°C at the southernmost sites. Terrigeneous sand grains of probably ice rafted origin and clay mineral assemblages point to the existence of a limited East Antarctic ice cap with some glaciers reaching sea level as early as middle Eocene time around 45.5 Ma. Between 45 and 40 Ma, average paleotemperatures were between 5° and 7°C in deep and intermediate water masses, while near-surface water masses ranged between 6° and 10°C. During the late Eocene, between 40 and 36 Ma, average temperatures further decreased to 4°-5°C in the deep and intermediate water masses and to 5°-8°C near the sea surface. Abruptly increasing d18O values at approximately 35.9 Ma exactly correlate with a sharp pulse in the deposition of ice-rafted material on the Kerguelen Plateau, a dramatic change in clay mineral composition, and an altered Southern Ocean circulation indicated by a differentiation of benthic d13C values between sites, increasing opal concentrations and decreasing carbonate contents. For planktic and benthic foraminifera this d18O increase ranges between 1.0 and 1.3 per mil, and between 0.9 and 1.4 per mil, respectively. We favour a hypothesis that explains most of the d18O shift at 35.9 Ma with a buildup of a continental East Antarctic ice sheet. Consequently, relatively warm Oligocene Antarctic surface water temperatures probably are explained by a temperate, wet-based nature of the ice sheet. This would also aid in the fast build-up of an ice sheet by enhancing the moisture transport on to the continent.
