A comparison was made of capability of two methods: photochemical oxidation and high-temperature catalytic combustion - to oxidize organic carbon in organic substances different in their element composition and in their degree of complexity. Results of measurements of dissolved organic carbon obtained by both of these methods in waters of the Black, Bering and Okhotsk Seas are presented. Varying oxidation degree of organic matter was shown to be dependent on the region and depth. A conclusion was made that the high-temperature catalytic combustion method was to be preferred for dissolved organic carbon determination due to its easier standardization, while values obtained by the wet-oxidation method may be influenced by a great number of factors that are difficult to be controlled.

Site 695 lies on the southeast margin of the South Orkney microcontinent on the northern margin of the Weddell Sea, at 62°23.48'S, 43°27.10'W in 1305 m water depth. The inorganic properties of interstitial waters at this site, including sulfate reduction, biogenic methane production, and high concentrations of ammonia and phosphate, imply high microbial activity. However, no clear relationship between amino acid composition and concentration and the type of microbial activity (e.g., sulfate reduction or methane production) can be identified. The THAA (total hydrolyzable amino acids) values range between 2.45 and 17.31 µmol/L, averaging 7.14 µmol/L. The mean concentrations and relative abundance values of acidic, basic, neutral, aromatic, and sulfur-containing amino acids are 1.34 (18%), 1.09 (15%), 3.93 (54%), 0.50 (8%), and 0.02 (0%) µmol/L, respectively. Glycine is the most abundant amino acid residue, with serine, glutamic acid, and ornithine next. The DFAA (dissolved free amino acids) values range from 0.10 to 12.73 µmol/L, averaging 4.07 µmol/L. The acidic, basic, neutral, aromatic, and sulfurcontaining amino acids are on average 0.21, 0.79, 2.56, 0.41, and 0.01 µmol/L, respectively. The relative abundances of acidic, basic, neutral, and aromatic amino acids average 4%, 18%, 58%, and 15%, respectively. Predominance of DFAA over DCAA (dissolved combined amino acids) in interstitial waters of Lithologic Units I and II is contrary to the predominance of DCAA over DFAA in other interstitial waters and seawater. The comparison of amino acid compositions between DCAA and siliceous plankton suggests that the DCAA in interstitial waters originally comes from amino acids derived from siliceous plankton. However, other sources which are much enriched in glutamic acid contribute to the DCAA composition.

Rate of hydrogen sulfide oxidation in the redox zone of the Black Sea and rate of hydrogen sulfide formation due to bacterial sulfate reduction in the upper layer of anaerobic waters were measured in February-April 1991. These measurements were made using sulfur radioisotope under conditions close to those in situ. It was established that hydrogen sulfide is oxidized in the layer of oxygen and hydrogen sulfide coexistence under the upper boundary of the hydrogen sulfide layer. Maximum rate of hydrogen sulfide oxidation was recorded within the limits of density values dT of 16.20-16.30, while varying in the layer from 2 to 4.5 µmol/day. The average rate of hydrogen sulfide oxidation was 1.5-3 times higher than that during the warm season. Sulfide formation was not observed at most of the stations in the examined lower portion of the pycnocline layer (140 to 400 m). Noticeable sulfate reduction was detected only at one station on the northwestern shelf. Intensified hydrodynamics in the upper layers of the water mass during the cold season can be a probable reason for such noticeable changes in sulfur dynamics in the water mass of the Black Sea. Data suggesting that hydrogen sulfide oxidation proceeds under the hydrogen sulfide boundary indicate absence of the so-called "suboxic zone" in this basin.

An analysis of variations in 137Cs and 90Sr concentrations in Baltic Sea surface waters after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was performed. Instability of 137Cs concentrations during the short-term observations was found, when they differed 2- to 3-fold. Concentrations of 90Sr appeared to be more stable; meanwhile, their deviations sometimes exceeded ranges of experimental errors. By variations in the monthly average values of radionuclide concentrations in surface waters of the Baltic Sea in 1989-1995, no trend of water self-purification was observed. Theoretical results obtained confirmed a potential of formation and propagation of patches with increased concentrations of 137Cs in the southeastern Baltic Sea. The most reliable factor that controlled the process of self-purification of Baltic Sea water appeared to be the mean annual value of radionuclide concentration. Pronounced divergences were obtained between the measured and calculated mean annual concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in surface waters of the Baltic Sea in 1989-2001. These divergences are explained by potential influence of waters from the Gulf of Bothnia and by other additional supplies of radionuclides to marine environment, which were not included into mathematical models.

Species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and chlorophyll concentration were measured at three horizons of 9 stations in the Nha Trang Bay of the South China Sea in March 1998. Vertical distribution of fluorescence parameters, temperature and irradiance were measured in the 0-18 m layer of the water column at 21 stations. It was shown that according to biomass (B) and chlorophyll concentration (Chl) the Bay is mezotrophic. B and Chl in the water column increased seaward. Mean values of Chl in the southern part of the Bay exceeded those in northern part. Mean values of B were similar. B and Chl in the bottom layer exceeded ones in the upper layer. Diatoms dominated in species diversity and abundance. Diatom Guinardia striata made the main contribution to phytoplankton biomass. Similarity of phytoplankton was high. In the upper layer phytoplankton was photoinhibited during the most part of the light period, but at the bottom photosynthetic activity was high. Water column B varied in an order of magnitude during the daily cycle mainly because of B variations in the bottom layer due to tide flow.

Concentration of dissolved and suspended organic carbon in the Barents Sea decreases with increasing depth and in meridional direction from south to north. This fact is attributed to uneven supply of organic matter (OM) from different sources. Large amounts of OM are present in the water column of the Barents Sea, which is a result of high productivity of this water mass and slow decomposition of OM at low temperatures and lowered activity of microflora. Larger amount of OM reaches bottom sediments of the Barents Sea more than in seas, which have similar depth and productivity, but are located at low latitudes. Characteristic features of distribution of lipids and suspended matter in sea water are examined.
