A basaltic tephra layer consisting of brownish-olive glass shards. and about 0.2 mm thick. was found in cores from four lakes in northwest Germany. According to pollen analysis it was deposited during the early Boreal period (corresponding to about 8700 BP). The petrographic properties. the geochemical composition and the age agree with those of the Saksunarvatn tephra. which was first found on the Faroe Islands. The position of the tephra layer in the pollen stratigraphy and in the absolute time-scale is discussed. Procedures for locating the tephra in other cores are suggested.

The loss of water in a desiccating atmosphere (c.40% r.h. at 10°C) and uptake of water from a saturated atmosphere (100% r.h. at 10°C) was recorded at intervals over periods of many hours or days in the dominant mosses and macroiichens occurring near the Australian Casey Station. Wilkes Land, continental Antarctica. While major differences exist in the water holding capacity and rates of water loss between mosses and lichens, the minimum levels attained after prolonged exposure to desiccating conditions are remarkably similar. By contrast, the volume of water absorbed from a saturated atmosphere is very similar in both groups of cryptogams. Morphological and anatomical characters are responsible for many of the differences, both between species, and within species exhibiting different growth features. Thus, significantly larger amounts of water are held by colonies of Bryum algens with a dense tomentum of rhizoids than those with sparse rhizoids; similarly, the rhizinate Umbilicaria aprina held a greater volume of water than the erhizinate U. decussata. The filamentous mat form of Alectoria mimiscula permits a much higher water content to be attained than in the coarser fruticose forms of Usnea sphacelata and U. antarctica. The dense shoot arrangement in Schistidium antarcticum accounts for the high water holding capacity in the hydric turf form whereas the less densely packed shoots and thicker cell walls of the xeric cushion form maintain a lower water content. The rate of water loss (as percentage dry weight) was much faster in the turf form of Schistidium and tomenlose form of Bryum, although this trend was reversed when expressed as percentage of the initial water content. Minimal water contents arc achieved by the lichens in desiccating conditions within 6-12 hours, whereas the mosses take several times longer. The water relations characteristics of these cryptogams are considered in the light of their distribution in the field and of their metabolic activity under prevailing Antarctic conditions.

Shallow marine benthic communities around Antarctica show high levels of endemism, gigantism, slow growth, longevity and late maturity, as well as adaptive radiations that have generated considerable biodiversity in some taxa1. The deeper parts of the Southern Ocean exhibit some unique environmental features, including a very deep continental shelf2 and a weakly stratified water column, and are the source for much of the deep water in the world ocean. These features suggest that deep-sea faunas around the Antarctic may be related both to adjacent shelf communities and to those in other oceans. Unlike shallow-water Antarctic benthic communities, however, little is known about life in this vast deep-sea region2, 3. Here, we report new data from recent sampling expeditions in the deep Weddell Sea and adjacent areas (748-6,348 m water depth) that reveal high levels of new biodiversity; for example, 674 isopods species, of which 585 were new to science. Bathymetric and biogeographic trends varied between taxa. In groups such as the isopods and polychaetes, slope assemblages included species that have invaded from the shelf. In other taxa, the shelf and slope assemblages were more distinct. Abyssal faunas tended to have stronger links to other oceans, particularly the Atlantic, but mainly in taxa with good dispersal capabilities, such as the Foraminifera. The isopods, ostracods and nematodes, which are poor dispersers, include many species currently known only from the Southern Ocean. Our findings challenge suggestions that deep-sea diversity is depressed in the Southern Ocean and provide a basis for exploring the evolutionary significance of the varied biogeographic patterns observed in this remote environment.

By the nuclear bomb tests during the 1950s and early 1960s, the radiocarbon content of the atmospheric CO, on the Southern Hemisphere rose within a few years from 98 to 162% of the standard recent value and then dropped to 122% (at the end of 1984). This rapid fluctuation was used to determine the lifetime of five species of lichens collected in the beginning of 1985 in the maritime Antarctic. Under the assumption that Lichens assimilate each year carbon at the same rate and that carbon once fixed at least in main branches never will be exchanged later on. The age of mature thalli of Caioplaco regalis, Ramalino tetebrata and Ustiea antarctica was determined to 32 years, while U, aurantiaco-atra and Himantormia lugubris gave an age of ca. 38 years and ca. 60 years, respectively.

During Leg 87 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, eleven holes were drilled at Sites 582 and 583 in the Nankai Trough, off Shikoku, southwestern Honshu, and three holes at Site 584 in the Japan Trench, off northeastern Honshu, Japan. In the former area, a low-latitude diatom zone called the Pseudoeunotia doliolus Zone is recognized in thick upper Quaternary sediments, which yield rare but characteristic admixtures of marine planktonic, marine tychopelagic-tobenthic, and nonmarine diatoms. In the latter area, all the sediments recovered contain abundant to common diatoms, allowing recognition of 12 continuous diatom zones from upper Quaternary through lower middle Miocene. Three hiatuses occur in this area around the Pleistocene/Pliocene boundary and in the upper and middle Miocene. In addition, 19 modified diatom zones for a lower Miocene through upper Quaternary interval are proposed. These middle-to-highlatitude zones are numerically coded (NPD1-NPD12) and represent the entire North Pacific. The establishment of these zones is based primarily on Leg 87 data and other DSDP materials and partially on several Japanese subaerial sequences. Correlation of the new zonal framework with previously established frameworks is attempted by the evaluation of operational usefulness of previously used datums. Resting spores of Chaetoceros and its related forms are recorded with specific intent for the first time, and possible ramifications of its frequency variation are presented. Nine new species are proposed: Delphineis sheshukovae Akiba n. sp., Denticulopsis praelauta Akiba and Koizumi n. sp., Kisseleviella ezoensis Akiba n. sp., Nitzschia umaoiensis Akiba n. sp., Thalassiosira jouseae Akiba n. sp., T. praenidulus Akiba n. sp., T. sancettae Akiba n. sp., T. umaoiensis Akiba n. sp., and T. urahoroensis Akiba n. sp. Transfers of systematic positions of the following four taxa are also proposed: Delphineis simonsenii (Mertz) Akiba n. comb., Ikebea tenuis (Brun) Akiba n. comb., Thalassiosira delicata (Barron) Akiba n. stat., and Thalassiothrixrobusta (Schrader) Akiba n. comb.

Soils from the maritime (Arctowski Station, King George Island) and coastal continental (Casey Station, Wilkes Land) Antarctic region are described with respect to pedology, isotopic and microbial environments. They are classified as leptosols, regosols, podzols, and histosols. Only surface layers (1-3 cm) contain sufficient organic material to provide a favourable environment for microbial communities and, further, for accumulations of organic matter. Variability of biological and chemical properties is high on a centimeter scale with depth and in the range of decimeters in horizontal scales.

The relationship between the abundance and diversity of tintinnids and the concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl a) was contrasted between neritic and oceanic waters of the SW Atlantic during autumn and summer. Chl a and tintinnid abundance and biomass reached maximum values (17.53 µg/L, 2.76 x 10**3 ind./L and 6.29 µg C/L, respectively) in shelf waters during summer, and their mean values generally differed by one order of magnitude between environments. Peaks in species richness (13) and Shannon diversity index (2.12) were found in the shelf-ocean boundary, but both variables showed nonsignificant differences between areas. Species richness correlated significantly with both Chl a and abundance. Such relationships, which followed a negative linear or quadratic function in the shelf and a positive linear function in oceanic waters, are thought to reflect either the competitive dominance of one species or a relatively wide spectrum of tintinnid size-classes, respectively.

Ciliates from sub-surface waters of the Argentine shelf and the Drake Passage under austral summer and autumn conditions were examined and compared for the first time. In both environments, the taxonomic structure of ciliates was related to temperature and salinity, and aloricate oligotrichs dominated in density (80%) over loricate oligotrichs, litostomatids and prostomatids, while the microplanktonic fraction prevailed in terms of biomass (90%) over the nanociliates. Myrionecta rubra was found all along the Argentine shelf only in autumn, but showed isolated peaks of abundance (10**3 ind./L) during summer. Mean values of density and biomass of total ciliates decreased ca. 2-fold from the shelf-slope to oceanic waters, while potential maximum production of aloricate oligotrichs decreased 9-fold, in relation with the drop in chlorophyll a concentration and the latitudinal decline of temperature, also reflected in maximum growth rates. Fifty percent of total ciliate abundance was represented by local increases (maximum: 20 000 ind./L and 25 µg C/L), which were spatially superimposed with ranges of seawater temperature and chlorophyll a concentrations of 10-15°C and 0.6-6 µg/L, respectively and were found in the nearby of fronts located on the shelf and the slope.
