Thermokarst lakes in the Siberian Arctic contain sediment archives that can be used for paleoenvironmental inference. Until now, however, there has been no study from the inner Lena River Delta with a focus on diatoms. The objective of this study was to investigate how the diatom community in a thermokarst lake responded to past limnogeological changes and what specific factors drove variations in the diatom assemblage. We analysed fossil diatom species, organic content, grain-size distribution and elemental composition in a sediment core retrieved in 2009 from a shallow thermokarst lake in the Arga Complex, western Lena River Delta. The core contains a 3,000-year record of sediment accumulation. Shifts in the predominantly benthic and epiphytic diatom species composition parallel changes in sediment characteristics. Paleoenvironmental and limnogeological development, inferred from multiple biological and sedimentological variables, are discussed in the context of four diatom zones, and indicate a strong relation between changes in the diatom assemblage and thermokarst processes. We conclude that limnogeological and thermokarst processes such as lake drainage, rather than direct climate forcing, were the main factors that altered the aquatic ecosystem by influencing, for example, habitat availability, hydrochemistry, and water level.

Tetrapyrrole pigments isolated from sediments retrieved during Leg 57 include pheophytin-a, a myriad of chlorins, free-base deoxophylloerythroetioporphyrin (DPEP), as well as copper and nickel porphyrins. Their richness, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in chlorin tetrapyrroles affords a relatively complete study on the early diagenesis of chlorophyll. Our studies, coupled with those in the preceding chapter by Louda et al., point out the influence of pre- and postdepositional environments upon the mode of chlorophyll diagenesis. Formation of tetrapyrroles, collectively called "petroporphyrins," is seen to occur in only a limited set of environmental conditions (see Baker and Palmer, 1978). The more generalized route of chlorophyll diagenesis, at least in the ocean, results in removal of tetrapyrrole pigment, from the fossil record. Late diagenetic products, metalloporphyrins, are found to represent an extremely minor component of the tetrapyrrole assemblage in sediments studied from the Japan Trench. The products of chlorophyll diagenesis isolated from Japan Trench sediments allow expansion of previous diagenetic schemes (Baker and Palmer, 1978; Triebs, 1936) and indicate directions for future studies.

The Agulhas Bank region, south of Africa, is an oceanographically important and complex area. The leakage of warm saline Indian Ocean water into the South Atlantic around the southern tip of Africa is a crucial factor in the global thermohaline circulation. Foraminiferal assemblage, stable isotope and sedimentological data from the top 10 m of core MD962080, recovered from the western Agulhas Bank Slope, are used to indicate changes in water mass circulation in the southeastern South Atlantic for the last 450 kyr. Sedimentological and planktonic foraminiferal data give clear signals of cold water intrusions. The benthic stable isotope record provides the stratigraphic framework and indicates that the last four climatic cycles are represented (i.e. down to marine isotope stage (MIS) 12). The planktonic foraminiferal assemblages bear a clear transitional to subantarctic character with Globorotalia inflata and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral) being the dominant taxa. Input of cold, subantarctic waters into the region by means of leakage through the Subtropical Convergence, as part of Agulhas ring shedding, and a general cooling of surface waters is suggested by increased occurrence of the subantarctic assemblage during glacial periods. Variable input of Indian Ocean waters via the Agulhas Current is indicated by the presence of tropical/subtropical planktonic foraminiferal species Globoquadrina dutertrei, Globigerinoides ruber (alba) and Globorotalia menardii with maximum leakage occurring at glacial terminations. The continuous presence of G. menardii throughout the core suggests that the exchange of water from the South Indian Ocean to the South Atlantic Ocean was never entirely obstructed in the last 450 kyr. The benthic carbon isotope record and sediment textural data reflect a change in bottom water masses over the core location from North Atlantic Deep Water to Upper Southern Component Water. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages and sediment composition indicate a profound change in surface water conditions over the core site approximately 200-250 kyr BP, during MIS 7, from mixed subantarctic and transitional water masses to overall warmer surface water conditions.

Three uppermost Cretaceous through basal Paleocene stratigraphic sequences are examined for planktic foraminiferal assemblage stability and temporal succession patterns. These sequences are at mid-latitude South Atlantic DSDP Site 528, then-equatorial Pacific DSDP Site 577 and the Tethyan shelf Ben Gurion section of the Negev, Israel. In order to better estimate biogeographic patterns and habitat preferences, the results of these analyses are compared to previous Cretaceous biogeographic studies and to previous analyses of Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary shelf and epicontinental sections. Results indicate that immediately following the K/T boundary, the examined epicontinental and open-ocean sites were exploited primarily by previously epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages. This pattern of K/T boundary assemblage dominance suggests the geologically instantaneous break-down of Late Cretaceous epicontinental and open-ocean biogeographic provincialization. This shift in open-ocean foraminiferal assemblages is not consistent with models of nonselective K/T boundary extinctions, but is consistent with models of extinction resistence and offshore expansion of nearshore taxa. The re-establishment of stable biogeographic differences between open-ocean and epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages occurs by the basal Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Zone. At open-ocean sites 528 and 577 and the outershelf Ben Gurion section, P0 and P. eugubina Zone faunal records are marked by a pronounced alternation between Paleocene biserial- and non-biserial-dominated assemblages, This alternation appears strongly damped at shelf and epicontinental sections previously examined. The first appearance and peak magnitude of abundant earliest Paleocene trochospiral forms (Parvularugoglobigerina, Eoglobigerina, Morozovella, Globoconusa) also vary from site to site and may depend closely on levels of primary carbonate productivity.

We analyzed Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of Neogene fossil fish teeth from two sites in the Pacific in order to determine the effect of cleaning protocols and burial diagenesis on the preservation of seawater isotopic values. Sr is incorporated into the teeth at the time of growth; thus Sr isotopes are potentially valuable for chemostratigraphy. Nd isotopes are potential conservative tracers of paleocirculation; however, Nd is incorporated post-mortem, and may record diagenetic pore waters rather than seawater. We evaluated samples from two sites (Site 807A, Ontong Java Plateau and Site 786A, Izu-Bonin Arc) that were exposed to similar bottom waters, but have distinct lithologies and pore water chemistries. The Sr isotopic values of the fish teeth appear to accurately reflect contemporaneous seawater at both sites. The excellent correlation between the Nd isotopic values of teeth from the two sites suggests that the Nd is incorporated while the teeth are in chemical equilibrium with seawater, and that the signal is preserved over geologic timescales and subsequent burial. These data also corroborate paleoseawater Nd isotopic compositions derived from Pacific ferromanganese crusts that were recovered from similar water depths (Ling et al., 1997; doi:10.1016/S0012-821X(96)00224-5). This corroboration strongly suggests that both materials preserve seawater Nd isotope values. Variations in Pacific deepwater e-Nd values are consistent with predictions for the shoaling of the Isthmus of Panama and the subsequent initiation of nonradiogenic North Atlantic Deep Water that entered the Pacific via the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Acidic to intermediate volcanic rocks were obtained as boulders, pebbles, and clasts with intercalated matrix sediments near the Japan Trench. A 47.5-meter conglomerate bed unconformably overlies acoustic basement consisting of Upper Cretaceous siltstone and is overlain in turn by massive coarse-sandstone and siltstone beds with many fossil mollusks. The volcanic cobbles and boulders in the conglomerate show pronounced porphyritic texture. Their phenocrysts are plagioclase, hornblende, and biotite; the groundmass consists of plagioclase, K-feldspar, quartz, iron oxide, and altered interstitial glass. The Plagioclase content of these volcanic rocks is very high, whereas iron oxide minerals are rare. The chemical composition of these volcanic rocks was analyzed to determine the rock series. Matrix sediments were also analyzed chemically, and their chemical composition was found to be similar to that of volcanic rocks, except for a lower CaO content. SiO2 content of the volcanic rocks ranges from 60.23 to 73.90, corresponding to that of andesite to rhyolite. All the samples show extremely high Al2O3 content, which reflects the high amounts of modal plagioclase. These volcanic rocks belong to both the calc-alkalic and tholeiitic rock series, and the differentiation trend is controlled by fractional crystallization, mainly of plagioclase, K-feldspar, and hornblende. The assemblage of calc-alkalic and tholeiitic rock series is frequently observed in island arcs and active continental margins. These volcanic rocks are derived from the Oyashio ancient landmass, which is a slightly matured island arc.

Calcareous nannofossil assemblages were studied from Sites 699 and 703, drilled during ODP Leg 114 to the west and east, respectively, of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the subantarctic South Atlantic Ocean. Recovery at the two sites consists of an almost continuous sequence of upper Eocene-lower Oligocene sediments. This study describes the calcareous nannofossil assemblages at the transition between the Eocene and Oligocene and correlates these assemblages with those described in lower latitude sections. Quantitative analyses were performed on several important taxa in order to improve the biostratigraphic resolution and permit some paleoenvironmental interpretations. Several discrepancies were noted between the two sites and between the Eocene and Oligocene assemblages. The Eocene assemblages show a great number of species and warmer water conditions; the early Oligocene assemblages are less diversified and are indicative of cooler conditions. The Eocene/Oligocene boundary was not defined by planktonic foraminifers because of the strong dissolution, poor recovery, and drilling disturbances. On the other hand, the calcareous nannofossil assemblage allowed recognition of the interval where the Eocene/Oligocene boundary can possibly be placed.

The assumption of synchrony of first and last occurrences of fossil taxa can be tested using graphic correlation procedures which, by allowing measured stratigraphic sections to be compared on a common depth scale, make it possible to develop a correlation model which integrates information from a number of cores. The strategy of the test presented here is to use a graphic correlation model that is based on data from the Atlantic (Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites 502, 516A) and north Pacific (DSDP site 577A) as a basis for determining to what extent fossil datums in the southwest Pacific are synchronous. First and last occurrences of Pliocene calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifers have been compared in five DSDP cores from the southwest Pacific ocean (sites 586, 587, 588, 590A, and 592). All cores were recovered using hydraulic piston coring technology, which assures the best recovery and minimal disturbance. Most of these cores contain abundant, well-preserved foraminifers and nannofossils, as well as a partial record of many of the expected magnetic polarity reversals in this part of the section. To assure taxonomic consistency, all taxonomic identifications were made by the author. Graphic correlation of this data set suggests that several important biostratigraphic markers are highly diachronous. For example, this study confirms that Globorotalia truncatulinoides first occurs at approximately 2.4 Ma between 20° and 35° south latitude in the southwest Pacific, approximately 0.5 m.y. earlier than it is found elsewhere in the Atlantic and Pacific. Other datums, such as the last occurrence of Discoaster brouweri, are essentially synchronous. These findings suggest that biostratigraphic models based on the assumption of synchrony of first and last occurrences of fossil taxa may be incorrect. Biostratigraphic models created with the Graphic Correlation method offer an opportunity to examine the biogeographic dimensions of origination, migration, and extinction of planktonic taxa.

Explanations for the demise of the Classic Maya civilization on the Yucatán Peninsula during the Terminal Classic Period (TCP; CE 750-1050) are controversial. Multiyear droughts are one likely cause, but the role of the Caribbean Sea, the dominant moisture source for Mesoamerica, remains largely unknown. Here we present bimonthly resolved snapshots of reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) variability in the southern Caribbean from precisely dated fossil corals. Our fossil coral results from Bonaire indicate strong interannual to decadal SST and SSS variability in the southern Caribbean Sea during the TCP with multiyear extremes of high SSS and high SST that coincide with droughts on the Yucatán Peninsula. The results are best explained by changed Caribbean SST gradients affecting the Caribbean low-level atmospheric jet with consequences for Mesoamerican precipitation, possibly linked to changes in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation strength. Our findings provide a new perspective on the anomalous hydrological changes on the Yucatán Peninsula during the TCP that complement the often-suggested southward displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. We advocate for a strong role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in the Caribbean Sea related to the multiyear variations in Caribbean Sea surface conditions as an important driver of the spatially complex pattern of hydrological anomalies during the TCP.

This study analyzes coccolithophore abundance fluctuations (e.g., Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa specimens, and Florisphaera profunda) in core MD01-2444 sediment strata retrieved at the Iberian Margin, northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Coccolithophores are calcareous nannofossils, a major component of the oceanic phytoplankton, which provide information about past ecological and climatological variability. Results are supported by data on fossil organic compounds (sea surface temperatures, alkenones, and n-hexacosan-1-ol index) and geochemical analyses (benthic d13Ccc and planktonic d18Occ isotopes). Three scenarios are taken into account for this location at centennial-scale resolution over the last 70,000 years: the Holocene and the stadial and interstadial modes. The different alternatives are described by means of elements such as nutrients; upwelling phenomena; temperatures at surface and subsurface level; or the arrival of surface turbid, fresh, and cold waters due to icebergs, low sea level, increased aridity, and dust. During the Holocene, moderate primary productivity was observed (mainly concentrated in E. huxleyi specimens); surface temperatures were at maxima while the water column was highly ventilated by northern-sourced polar deep waters and warmer subsurface, nutrient-poor subtropical waters. Over most of the last glacial stadials, surface productivity weakened (higher F. profunda and reworked specimen percentages and lower diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones); the arrival of cold Arctic surface waters traced by tetraunsaturated C37 peaks and large E. huxleyi, together with powerful ventilated southern-sourced polar deep waters, disturbed, in all likelihood, the delicate vertical equilibrium while preventing significant upwelling mixing. Finally, during the last glacial interstadials (lower F. profunda percentages, nonreworked material, and higher diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones) a combined signal is observed: warm surface temperatures were concurrent with generally low oxygenation of the deep-sea floor, moderate arrival of northern-sourced deep waters, and subsurface cold, nutrient-rich, recently upwelled waters, probably of polar origin; these particular conditions may have promoted vertical mixing while enhancing surface primary productivity (mainly of Gephyrocapsa specimens).
