One of the major shipboard findings during Leg 23 drilling in the Red Sea was the presence of late Miocene evaporites at Sites 225, 227, and 228. The top of the evaporite sequence correlates with a strong reflector (Reflector S) which has been mapped over much of the Red Sea (Ross et al., 1969, Phillips and Ross, 1970). This indicates that the Red Sea appears to be extent. Miocene sediments, including evaporites, are known from a few outcrops along the coastal plains of the Gulf of Suez to lat 14°N (Sadek, 1959, cited in Friedman, 1972; Heybroek, 1965; Friedman, 1972). Along the length of the Red Sea, the presence of Miocene salt is indicated by seismic reflection studies (Lowell and Genik, 1972) and confirmed by drilling. The recently published data from deep exploratory wells (Ahmed, 1972) demonstrate the great thickness of elastics and evaporites which were deposited in the Red Sea depression during Miocene time. The Red Sea evaporites are of the same age as the evaporites found by deep sea drilling (DSDP Leg 13) in the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, Reflector S in the Red Sea is comparable to Reflector M in the Mediterranean. It is assumed that during Miocene time a connection between these two basins was established (Coleman, this volume) resulting in a similar origin for the evaporites deposited in the Red Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea. The origin of the Mediterranean evaporites has been discussed in great detail (Hsü et al., 1973; Nesteroff, 1973; Friedman, 1973). The formation of evaporites may be interpreted by three different hypotheses. 1) Evaporation of a shallow restricted shelf sea or lagoon which receives inflows from the open ocean. 2) Evaporation of a deep-water basin which is separated from the open ocean by a shallow sill (Schmalz, 1969). 3) Evaporation of playas or salt lakes which are situated in desiccated deep basins isolated from the open ocean (Hsü et al., 1973). The purpose of this study is to show whether one of these models might apply to the formation and deposition of the Red Sea evaporites. Therefore, a detailed petrographic and geochemical investigation was carried out.

In 2008, the 50th anniversary of the IGY (International Geophysical Year), WDCMARE presents with this CD publication 3632 data sets in Open Access as part of the most important results from 73 cruises of the research vessel METEOR between 1964 and 1985. The archive is a coherent organized collection of published and unpublished data sets produced by scientists of all marine research disciplines who participated in Meteor expeditions, measured environmental parameters during cruises and investigated sample material post cruise in the labs of the participating institutions. In most cases, the data was gathered from the Meteor Forschungsergebnisse, published by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). A second important data source are time series and radiosonde ascensions of more than 20 years of ships weather observations, which were provided by the Deutscher Wetterdienst, Hamburg. The final inclusion of all data into the PANGAEA information system ensures secure archiving, future updates, widespread distribution in electronic, machine-readable form with longterm access via the Internet. To produce this publication, all data sets with metadata were extracted from PANGAEA and organized in a directory structure on a CD together with a search capability.

On a cruise from the eastern into western Mediterranean Sea in November/December 1978 a total of 126 samples were collected from 8 vertical profiles and 7 coastal stations for trace metal analysis. The sampling, processing and analysis was performed under strict "clean room" conditions. The concentration of the open-sea samples are close to oceanic results gathered under similar conditions. The grand averages from all profiles (± st. dev. of the individual samples) of 0.40 ± 0.16 µg/l Zn, 17.4 ± 7.4 ng/l Cd, 0.21 ± 0.07 µg/l Cu, 0.21 ± 0.13 µg/l Mn and 0.25 ± 0.09 µg/l Fe indicate that a "metal problem" does not exist in the open Mediterranean. A biologically mediated deplition in surface waters or correlation with nutrients have not been observed under the conditions established on this cruise. This is probably due top low primary production and seasonal advection processes prevailing in this sea. The data for manganese show generally higher values in the surface layer (0-75 m) than in deep waters. This could evidently proved in the nearshore profile indicating a terrigenous source for manganese.

Fossil fish teeth from pelagic open ocean settings are considered a robust archive for preserving the neodymium (Nd) isotopic composition of ancient seawater. However, using fossil fish teeth as an archive to reconstruct seawater Nd isotopic compositions in different sedimentary redox environments and in terrigenous-dominated, shallow marine settings is less proven. To address these uncertainties, fish tooth and sediment samples from a middle Eocene section deposited proximal to the East Antarctic margin at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1356 were analyzed for major and trace element geochemistry, and Nd isotopes. Major and trace element analyses of the sediments reveal changing redox conditions throughout deposition in a shallow marine environment. However, variations in the Nd isotopic composition and rare earth element (REE) patterns of the associated fish teeth do not correspond to redox changes in the sediments. REE patterns in fish teeth at Site U1356 carry a typical mid-REE-enriched signature. However, a consistently positive Ce anomaly marks a deviation from a pure authigenic origin of REEs to the fish tooth. Neodymium isotopic compositions of cleaned and uncleaned fish teeth fall between modern seawater and local sediments and hence could be authigenic in nature, but could also be influenced by sedimentary fluxes. We conclude that the fossil fish tooth Nd isotope proxy is not sensitive to moderate changes in pore water oxygenation. However, combined studies on sediments, pore waters, fish teeth and seawater are needed to fully understand processes driving the reconstructed signature from shallow marine sections in proximity to continental sources. The first International Polar Year (IPY) was an international effort to perform continous meteorological and geophysical observations over a time period of two years (1882-1883). Eleven nations established twelve research stations in the Arctic along with thirteen auxilary stations. Two stations were operated on the southern hemisphere (South Georgia and Tierra del Fuego). The data were published in 26 volumes on 8700+ pages of reports, descriptions, tables and graphs in total. The list of meteorological parameters includes temperature, wind, pressure, clouds, precipitation, evaporation, humidity and radiation. In the light of Global Change and the intensification of observations and continous measurements in both polar regions, long-time series increase in importance. The observations of the first IPY from the 19th century enable us to extend the data from the 20th century even more back into the past. In the occasion of the fourth IPY (2007-2009) WDC-MARE decided to digitize the complete set of meteorological data in full hourly resolution and publish it in its reports and make it available in Open Access via the data library PANGAEA.
