Carbon isotope and benthic foraminiferal data from Blake Outer Ridge, a sediment drift in the western North Atlantic (Ocean Drilling Program Sites 994 and 997, water depth ~ 2800 m), document variability in the relative volume of Southern Component (SCW) and Northern Component Waters (NCW) over the last 7 Ma. SCW was dominant before ~5.0 Ma, at ~3.6-2.4 Ma, and 1.2-0.8 Ma, whereas NCW dominated in the warm early Pliocene (5.0-3.6 Ma), and at 2.4-1.2 Ma. The relative volume of NCW and SCW fluctuated strongly over the last 0.8 Ma, with strong glacial-interglacial variability. The intensity of the Western Boundary Undercurrent was positively correlated to the relative volume of NCW. Values of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were > 1.5% in sediments older than ~ 3.8 Ma, and not correlated to high primary productivity indicators, thus may reflect lateral transport of organic matter. TOC values decreased during the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG, 3.8-1.8 Ma). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages underwent major changes when the sites were dominantly under SCW (3.6-2.4 and 1.2-0.8 Ma), coeval with the 'Last Global Extinction' of elongate, cylindrical deep-sea benthic foraminifera, which has been linked to cooling, increased ventilation and changes in the efficiency of the biological pump. These benthic foraminiferal turnovers were neither directly associated with changes in dominant bottom water mass nor with changes in productivity, but occurred during global cooling and increased ventilation of deep waters associated with the intensification of the NHG.

The state of consolidation of outer Bengal Fan deposits is closely related to their depositional history. Early Pleistocene sediments are underconsolidated, i.e., fabric strength is lower than under equilibrium with the present overburden stress, at depths greater than 60-80 mbsf. This may be due to rapid accumulation (>15-20 cm/k.y.) and overlying low-permeability (<10**-7 cm/s) deposits. The underlying Pliocene sediments are overconsolidated, i.e., fabric strength is higher than in equilibrium with the present overburden stress; at Sites 717 and 719 the sediments are slightly overconsolidated, whereas at Site 718 the overconsolidation is significant. Overconsolidation is explained by erosion that occurred during the early Pleistocene for which a stratigraphic gap was recorded in the drilled cores. The eroded section is estimated to be in the range of 10-40 m at Sites 717 and 719, respectively, and 130-150 m at Site 718. Below 250-300 mbsf the most sediments are normally consolidated. The amount of erosion seems to be related to block rotation and uplift due to intraplate deformation.

Pollen analytical studies were carried out on two sediment cores from Outer Flensburg Fjord taken by N. Exon (1972). 1) Based on the occurrence of Fagopyrum, the lower peat horizon (ca. 40 cm below mean sea level) of the inner lagoon near Beveroe developed after 1400 AD. The dominance of Pinus indicates that its formation may have taken place as late as the end of the 17th. Century. 2) Core No. 10872 from a water depth of 26.5 m contains the pollen zones VIII through the beginning of XI (Overbeck, 1950). Although salinity maxima fall in zone IX, they are not reflected in the pollen curves which show the normal picture found in South Jütland.

The present microfouling and bioassay data were used to analyse whether microfouling control of F. vesiculosus and F. serratus against prokaryotes and pennate diatoms fluctuates with season and correlates with in situ microfouling pressure. The two perennial brown macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus were sampled monthly from mixed stands at a depth of 0.5 m under mid water level at Bülk, outer Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27'21 N / 10°11'57 E) within a one-year filed study (August 2012 - July 2013). Microfouler recruitment on glass (reference surface, n = 9 per month) and on both Fucus species (n = 9 per month and Fucus species) was determined monthly. Microfouling control strength of Fucus surface metabolites was tested by an in situ bioassay approach (n = 6 per month and species). We present new Holocene century to millennial-scale proxies for the well-dated piston core MD99-2269 from Húnaflóadjúp on the North Iceland Shelf. The core is located in 365 mwd and lies close to the fluctuating boundary between Atlantic and Arctic/Polar waters. The proxies are: alkenone-based SST°C, and Mg/Ca SST°C estimates and stable d13C and d18O values on planktonic and benthic foraminifera. The data were converted to 60 yr equi-spaced time-series. Significant trends in the data were extracted using Singular Spectrum Analysis and these accounted for between 50% and 70% of the variance. A comparison between these data with previously published climate proxies from MD99-2269 was carried out on a data set which consisted of 14-variable data set covering the interval 400-9200 cal yr BP at 100 yr time steps. This analysis indicated that the 1st two PC axes accounted for 57% of the variability with high loadings clustering primarily into "nutrient" and "temperature" proxies. Clustering on the 100 yr time-series indicated major changes in environment at ~6350 and ~3450 cal yr BP, which define early, mid- and late Holocene climatic intervals. We argue that a pervasive freshwater cap during the early Holocene resulted in warm SST°s, a stratified water column, and a depleted nutrient supply. The loss of the freshwater layer in the mid-Holocene resulted in high carbonate production, and the late Holocene/neoglacial interval was marked by significantly more variable sea surface conditions.

The main question, posed in the work scheme before laboratory analysis was started, was expressed as follows: Do marked seasonal fluctuations occur in trace element content of the sediment surface, and what are the probable influences of factors such as changing hydrographical parameters, plankton sequence etc. ? Special attention was paid to elements known as pollutants, for example mercury. Within this framework samples have been analysed for their contents of manganese, iron, zinc, lead, and mercury. The amounts of silica and organically-bound carbon serve in most cases as reference values for the trace element content. On sand temporary conditions of increased C org content raise the concentrations of all determined elements. Especially the values reached for mercury in July are worth nothing. It is concluded that Zn, Pb, and Hg tend to enrich with respect to C org as the decomposition of organic matter progresses. On mud-sand flocculation and precipitation of Mn/Fe-hydroxides probably represent an additional concentrating factor for the other elements as the relationship of the results for zinc and manganese shows. Manganese may indicate a seasonally related concentrating cycle at the sediment surface.
