The normal boiling point is a fundamental thermo-physical property, which is important in describing the transition between the vapor and liquid phases. Reliable method which can predict it is of great importance, especially for compounds where there are no experimental data available. In this work, an improved group contribution method, which is second order method, for determination of the normal boiling point of organic compounds based on the Joback functional first order groups with some changes and added some other functional groups was developed by using experimental data for 632 organic components. It could distinguish most of structural isomerism and stereoisomerism, which including the structural, cis- and trans- isomers of organic compounds. First and second order contributions for hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, fluorine, chlorine and bromine atoms, are given. The fminsearch mathematical approach from MATLAB software is used in this study to select an optimal collection of functional groups (65 functional groups) and subsequently to develop the model. This is a direct search method that uses the simplex search method of Lagarias et al. The results of the new method are compared to the several currently used methods and are shown to be far more accurate and reliable. The average absolute deviation of normal boiling point predictions for 632 organic compounds is 4.4350 K; and the average absolute relative deviation is 1.1047 %, which is of adequate accuracy for many practical applications.

The Hg distribution and some mineralogical-geochemical features of bottom sediments up to a depth of 10 m in the Deryugin Basin showed that the high and anomalous Hg contents in the Holocene deposits are confined to a spreading riftogenic structure and separate fluid vents within it. The accumulations of Hg in the the sediments were caused by its fluxes from gas and low-temperature hydrothermal vents under favorable oceanological conditions in the Holocene. The two mainly responsible for the high and anomalous Hg contents are infiltration (fluxes of hydrothermal or gas fluids from the sedimentary cover) and plume (Hg precipitation from water plumes with certain hydrochemical conditions forming above endogenous sources). The infiltration anomalies of Hg were revealed in the following environments: (1) near gas vents on the northeastern Sakhalin slope, where high Hg contents are associated only with Se and were caused by the accumulation of gases ascending from beneath the gas hydrate layer; (2) in the area of inferred occasionally operating low-temperature hydrothermal seeps in the central part of the Deryugin Basin, in which massive barite chimneys, hydrothermal Fe-Mn crusts, and anomalous contents of Mn, Ba, Zn, and Ni in sediments develop.

Investigations of petrography, mineralogy, and chemical composition of gases and fluids in tuffs and lavas were carried out on samples dredged in the transition zone from the shelf and slope of Iceland to the Reykjanes Ridge. The samples were collected from the depths of 950-720 m during different expeditions of R/V Akademik Kurchatov and Mikhail Lomonosov. Mantle ultrabasite inclusions were first recognized in the region of Iceland. It can be assumed that they are related to eruptive structures formed on the ocean floor during Pliocene and are associated with the Iceland hot spot.

We analyzed size-specific dry mass, sinking velocity, and apparent diffusivity in field-sampled marine snow, laboratory-made aggregates formed by diatoms or coccolithophorids, and small and large zooplankton fecal pellets with naturally varying content of ballast materials. Apparent diffusivity was measured directly inside aggregates and large (millimeter-long) fecal pellets using microsensors. Large fecal pellets, collected in the coastal upwelling off Cape Blanc, Mauritania, showed the highest volume-specific dry mass and sinking velocities because of a high content of opal, carbonate, and lithogenic material (mostly Saharan dust), which together comprised ~80% of the dry mass. The average solid matter density within these large fecal pellets was 1.7 g cm**-3, whereas their excess density was 0.25 ± 0.07 g cm**-3. Volume-specific dry mass of all sources of aggregates and fecal pellets ranged from 3.8 to 960 µg mm**-3, and average sinking velocities varied between 51 and 732 m d**-1. Porosity was >0.43 and >0.96 within fecal pellets and phytoplankton-derived aggregates, respectively. Averaged values of apparent diffusivity of gases within large fecal pellets and aggregates were 0.74 and 0.95 times that of the free diffusion coefficient in sea water, respectively. Ballast increases sinking velocity and, thus, also potential O2 fluxes to sedimenting aggregates and fecal pellets. Hence, ballast minerals limit the residence time of aggregates in the water column by increasing sinking velocity, but apparent diffusivity and potential oxygen supply within aggregates are high, whereby a large fraction of labile organic carbon can be respired during sedimentation.

The most direct method of investigating past variations of the atmospheric CO2 concentration before 1958, when continuous direct atmospheric CO2 measurements started, is the analysis of air extracted from suitable ice cores. Here we present a new detailed CO2 record from the Dronning Maud Land (DML) ice core, drilled in the framework of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) and some new measurements on a previously drilled ice core from the South Pole. The DML CO2 record shows an increase from about 278 to 282 parts per million by volume (ppmv) between ad 1000 and ad 1200 and a fairly continuous decrease to a mean value of about 277 ppmv around ad 1700. While the new South Pole measurements agree well with DML at the minimum at ad 1700 they are on average about 2 ppmv lower during the period ad 1000-1500. Published measurements from the coastal high-accumulation site Law Dome are considered as very reliable because of the reproducibility of the measurements, high temporal resolution and an accurate time scale. Other Antarctic ice cores could not, or only partly, reproduce the pre-industrial measurements from Law Dome. A comparison of the trends of DML and Law Dome shows a general agreement. However we should be able to rule out co-variations caused by the same artefact. Two possible effects are discussed, first production of CO2 by chemical reactions and second diffusion of dissolved air through the ice matrix into the bubbles. While the first effect cannot be totally excluded, comparison of the Law Dome and DML record shows that dissolved air diffusing to bubbles cannot be responsible for the pre-industrial variation. Therefore, the new record is not a proof of the Law Dome results but the first very strong support from an ice core of the Antarctic plateau.
