Broken Ridge, in the eastern Indian Ocean,is overlain by about 1600 m of middle Cretaceous to Pleistocene tuffaceous and carbonate sediments that record the oceanographic history of southern hemisphere mid-to high-latitude regions. Prior to about 42 Ma, Broken Ridge formed the northern part of the broad Kerguelen-Broken Ridge Plateau. During the middle Eocene, this feature was split by the newly forming Southeast Indian Ocean Ridge; since then, Broken Ridge has drifted north from about 55° to 31°S. The lower part of the sedimentary section is characterized by Turonian to Santonian tuffs that contain abundant glauconite and some carbonate. The tuffs record a large but apparently local volcanic input that characterized the central part of Broken Ridge into the early Tertiary. Maestrichtian shallow-water(several hundred to 1000 m depth) limestones and cherts accumulated at some of the highest rates ever documented from the open ocean, 4 to 5 g/cm**2/kyr. A complete (with all biostratigraphic zones) Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary section was recovered from site 752. The first 1.5 m.y. of the Tertiary is characterized by an order-of-magnitude reduction in the flux of biogenic sediments, indicating a period of sharply reduced biological productivity at 55°S, following which the carbonate and silica sedimentation rates almost reach the previous high values of the latest Cretaceous. We recovered a complete section through the Paleocene that contains all major fossil groups and is more than 300 m thick, perhaps the best pelagic Paleocene section encountered in ocean drilling. About 42 Ma, Broken Ridge was uplifted 2500 m in response to the intra-plateau rifting event; subsequent erosion and deposition has resulted in a prominent Eocene angular unconformity atop the ridge. An Oligocene disconformity characterized by a widespread pebble layer probably represents the 30 Ma sea-level fall. The Neogene pelagic ooze on Broken Ridge has been winnowed, and thus its grain size provides a direct physical record of the energy of the southern hemisphere drift current in the Indian Ocean for the past 30 m.y.

The ocean history of reactive phosphorus (P) (i.e., dissolved P available to fuel oceanic primary productivity) is of interest because of the role of P as a biolimiting nutrient, and knowledge of P burial in marine sediments is key to testing hypotheses about temporal changes in P input or output fluxes. Our understanding of the history of the P cycle over the Cenozoic has increased substantially with temporal records of reactive P mass accumulation rates from open-ocean Pacific and Atlantic equatorial sites. However, questions about the relative importance of nutrient burial in ocean-margin sediments relative to burial in open-ocean sediments and about the extent of P remobilization in organic-rich, reducing environments characteristic of margin sediments remain unresolved. Nutrient burial in oceanic boundary current systems has been suggested to have a controlling role in oceanic nutrient budgets in certain time intervals (Vincent and Berger, 1985, doi:10.1029/GM032p0455), with higher sediment accumulation rates balancing the limited spatial extent of these sediments. Some investigators suggest that remobilization of P from reducing sediments in margin settings is a significant positive feedback to primary productivity (e.g., Van Cappellan and Ingall, 1994, doi:10.1029/94PA01455), whereas other results indicate that both P uptake and P release may occur in these settings depending on the balance of organic carbon and iron supply to the sediments and on the oxygenation of bottom waters (McManus et al., 1997, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(97)00138-5). It is important to quantitatively understand the geochemistry of reactive P in margin sediments, where productivity and delivery of organic-rich material to the sediments in relatively shallow-water settings is often sufficient to promote anoxia in interstitial waters. To address these questions, we determined the P concentrations and geochemistry in sediment samples from eight sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 167, California margin (Sites 1010-1012, 1014, 1016-1017, and 1021-1022). These results are the first records of reactive P concentrations on long time scales-required for the calculation of P accumulation rates-for sediments from a highly productive eastern boundary current setting. In addition, we determined calcium carbonate contents and biogenic silica concentrations to define the environments of sedimentary production, burial, and diagenesis.

The Pliocene-Holocene sediments recovered on ODP Leg 114 from Holes 699A, 701C, and 704B are the subject of a detailed investigation to interpret changes in the Oceanographic environment of the South Atlantic in the vicinity of the Polar Front Zone (PFZ). The cores sample sediments at shallow (Hole 704B, 2532 m), intermediate (Hole 699A, 3716 m), and basinal (Hole 701C, 4647 m) depths. Sites 699 and 704 come under the influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and Circumpolar Deep Water. It is possible that the upper reaches of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) may also affect Hole 699A. Site 701 is influenced by AABW. Closely spaced samples were analyzed for grain-size distribution, sand fraction components, biosiliceous microfossils, organic carbon, and water content. PFZ migrations are traced using changes in bulk sedimentaccumulation rates and the abundance of the diatoms Actiniscus ssp. and Genus et species indet. 1 Fenner (1991), as well as changes in sediment grain size and composition. Diatomaceous sediments of Gilbert age in Hole 699A indicate that the PFZ was positioned over this site, but during the Gauss it migrated north, bringing in less productive Antarctic Surface Water. All cores document a very gradual southerly movement of the PFZ throughout the Matuyama (with some sharp fluctuations of the northen PFZ border over Site 704 between 1.45 and 1.83 m.y.). This regressive shift culminated in the late Matuyama. The latest Matuyama to earliest Brunhes record in Hole 699A has been removed by a hiatus lasting from 1.0 to 0.6 m.y., which was probably caused by intensification of the deep-reaching ACC. The corresponding interval in Hole 704B, the shallowest core, contains evidence of winnowing. Sharp fluctuations of large amplitude and high frequency in the lithology of the sediments from Hole 704B in the eastern South Atlantic, starting at about 0.75 m.y. and characterizing the whole Brunhes Epoch, record the rapid movement of the northern border of the PFZ over the site. These reflect strong glacial/interglacial alternations in climate. To a lesser extent, lithologic fluctuations in Hole 701C reflect the same phenomenon, whereas in Hole 699A the lithology does not vary as dramatically.

Accumulation rates of Mg, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, opal, and calcium carbonate have been calculated from their concentrations in samples from equatorial Deep Sea Drilling Project sites. Maps of element accumulation rates and of Q-mode factors derived from raw data indicate that the flux of trace metals to equatorial Pacific sediments has varied markedly through time and space in response to changes in the relative and absolute influence of several depositional influences: biogenic, detrital, authigenic, and hydrothermal sedimentation. Biologically derived material dominates the sediment of the equatorial Pacific. The distributions of Cu and Zn are most influenced by surface-water biological activity, but Ni, Al, Fe, and Mn are also incorporated into biological material. All of these elements have equatorial accumulation maxima similar to those of opal and calcium carbonate at times during the past 50 m.y. Detritus distributed by trade winds and equatorial surface circulation contributes Al, non-biogenic Si, Fe, and Mg to the region. Detrital sediment is most important in areas with a small supply of biogenic debris and low bulk-accumulation rates. Al accumulation generally increases toward the north and east, indicating its continental source and distribution by the northeast trade winds. Maxima in biological productivity during middle Eocene and latest Miocene to early Pliocene time and concomitant well-developed surface circulation contributed toward temporal maxima in the accumulation rates of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Al in sediments of those ages. Authigenic material is also important only where bulk-sediment accumulation rates are low. Ni, Cu, Zn, and sometimes Mn are associated with this sediment. Fe is almost entirely of hydrothermal origin. Mn is primarily hydrothermal, but some is probably scavenged from sea water by amorphous iron hydroxide floes along with other elements concentrated in hydrothermal sediments, Ni, Cu, and Zn. During the past 50 m.y. all of these elements accumulated over the East Pacific Rise at rates nearly an order of magnitude higher than those at non-rise-crest sites. In addition, factor analysis indicates that some of this material is carried substantial distances to the west of the rise crest. Accumulation rates of Fe in basal metalliferous sediments indicate that the hydrothermal activity that supplied amorphous Fe oxides to the East Pacific Rise areas was most intense during middle Eocene and late Miocene to early Pliocene time.

From the equatorial Indian Ocean, carbonate-free portions of sediment samples of Paleocene to Miocene calcareous oozes and chalks from Sites 707, 709, and 711 were studied using X-ray diffraction measurements and the scanning electron microscope. Downhole variations in biogenic opal, quartz, barite, and clinoptilolite were investigated. The abundance patterns of these major mineral phases show several similarities and may be used for additional lithologic correlations. Variations in biogenic opal contents reflect biogenic silica productivity. Beside the general pattern, a succession in biogenic silica decrease through time is generally recorded since the Oligocene. This succession started earliest at northernmost Site 711 and latest at southernmost Site 707, including Site 709 within these two. Opal-A variations as well as the barite distribution may be influenced by the paleoposition of the sites in relation to the high-productivity zone, which today lies south of the equator. Authigenic clinoptilolite apparently formed in two different modes. In deeper sediment intervals, clinoptilolite was the last mineral phase formed associated with enhanced silica diagenesis. In late Oligocene to middle Miocene sediments, clinoptilolite was the only authigenic silica phase encountered where otherwise strong opal dissolution was observed. The sponge spicules showed special dissolution features probably related to microbiological activity. Silica concretions mainly composed of opal-CT and authigenic quartz occur in carbonate-rich environments and are formed during later diagenesis when burial depth causes the sediments to reach higher temperatures. Opal-CT concretions in carbonate-free siliceous oozes were found at Site 711 and are probably formed during an early stage of silica diagenesis.

During R/V Meteor-cruise no. 30 4 moorings with 17 current meters were placed on the continental slope of Sierra Leone at depths between 81 and 1058 meters. The observation period started on March 8, 1973, 16.55 hours GMT and lasted 19 days for moorings M30_068MOOR, M30_069MOOR, M30_070MOOR on the slope and 9 days for M30_067MOOR on the shelf. One current meter recorded at location M30_067MOOR for 22 days. Hydrographic data were collected at 32 stations by means of the "Kieler Multi-Meeressonde". Harmonic analysis is applied to the first 15 days of the time series to determine the M2 and S2 tides. By vertically averaging of the Fourier coefficients the field of motion is separated into its barotropic and its baroclinic component. The expected error generated by white Gaussian noise is estimated. To estimate the influence of the particular vertical distribution of the current meters, the barotropic M2 tide is calculated by ommitting and interchanging time series of different moorings. It is shown that only the data of moorings M30_069MOOR, M30_070MOOR and M30_067MOOR can be used. The results for the barotropic M2 tide agree well with the previous publications of other authors. On the slope at a depth of 1000 m there is a free barotropic wave under the influence of the Coriolis-force propagating along the slope with an amplitude of 3.4 cm S**-1. On the shelf, the maximum current is substantially greater (5.8 cm s**-1) and the direction of propagation is perpendicular to the slope. As for the continental slope a separation into different baroclinic modes using vertical eigenmodes is not reasonable, an interpretation of the total baroclinic wave field is tried by means of the method of characteristis. Assuming the continental slope to generate several linear waves, which superpose, baroclinic tidal ellipses are calculated. The scattering of the direction of the major axes M30_069MOOR is in contrast to M30_070MOOR, where they are bundled within an angle of 60°. This is presumably caused by the different character of the bottom topography in the vicinity of the two moorings. A detailed discussion of M30_069MOOR is renounced since the accuracy of the bathymetric chart is not sufficient to prove any relation between waves and topography. The bundeling of the major axes at M30_070MOOR can be explained by the longslope changes of the slope, which cause an energy transfer from the longslope barotropic component to the downslope baroclinic component. The maximum amplitude is found at a depth of 245 m where it is expected from the characteristics originating at the shelf edge. Because of the dominating barotropic tide high coherence is found between most of the current meters. To show the influence of the baroclinic tidal waves, the effect of the mean current is considered. There are two periods nearly opposite longshore mean current. For 128 hours during each of these periods, starting on March 11, 05.00, and March 21, 08.30, the coherences and energy spectra are calculated. The changes in the slope of the characteristics are found in agreement with the changes of energy and coherence. Because of the short periods of nearly constant mean current, some of the calculated differences of energy and coherence are not statistically significant. For the M2 tide a calculation of the ratios of vertically integrated total baroclinic energy and vertically integrated barotropic kinetic energy is carried out. Taking into account both components (along and perpendicular to the slope) the obtained values are 0.75 and 0.98 at the slope and 0.38 at the shelf. If each component is considered separately, the ratios are 0.39 and 1.16 parallel to the slope and 5.1 and 15.85 for the component perpendicular to it. Taking the energy transfer from the longslope component to the doenslope component into account, a simple model yields an energy-ratio of 2.6. Considering the limited application of the theory to the real conditions, the obtained are in agreement with the values calculated by Sandstroem.

Lithology, lithic petrology, planktonic foraminiferal abundances, and clastic grain sizes have been determined in a 30 m-long core recovered from the Barra Fan off northwest Scotland. The record extends back to around 45 kyr B.P., with sedimentation rates ranging between 50 and 200 cm/kyr. The abundance of ice-rafted debris indicates 16 glacimarine events, including temporal equivalents to Heinrich events 1-4. Enhanced concentrations of basaltic material derived from the British Tertiary Province suggest that the glacimarine sediments record variations in a glacial source on the Hebrides shelf margin. Glacimarine zones are separated by silty intervals with high planktonic foraminifera concentrations that reflect an interstadial circulation regime in the Rockall Trough. The results suggest that the last British Ice Sheet fluctuated with a periodicity of 2000-3000 years, in common with the Dansgaard-Oeschger climate cycle.
