Since studies on deep-sea cores were carried out in the early 1990s it has been known that ambient temperature may have a marked affect on apatite fission track annealing. Due to sluggish annealing kinetics, this effect cannot be quantified by laboratory annealing experiments. The unknown amount of low-temperature annealing remains one of the main uncertainties for extracting thermal histories from fission track data, particularly for samples which experienced slow cooling in shallow crustal levels. To further elucidate these uncertainties, we studied volcanogenic sediments from five deep-sea drill cores, that were exposed to maximum temperatures between ~10° and 70°C over geological time scales of ~15-120 Ma. Mean track lengths (MTL) and etch pit diameters (Dpar) of all samples were measured, and the chemical composition of each grain analyzed for age and track length measurements was determined by electron microprobe analysis. Thermal histories of the sampled sites were independently reconstructed, based on vitrinite reflectance measurements and/or 1D numerical modelling. These reconstructions were used to test the most widely used annealing models for their ability to predict low-temperature annealing. Our results show that long-term exposure to temperatures below the temperature range of the nominal apatite fission track partial annealing zone results in track shortening ranging between 4 and 11%. Both chlorine content and Dpar values explain the downhole annealing patterns equally well. Low chlorine apatite from one drill core revealed a systematic relation between Si-content and Dpar value. The question whether Si-substitution in apatite has direct and systematic effects on annealing properties however, cannot be addressed by our data. For samples, which remained at temperatures <30°C, and which are low in chlorine, the Laslett et al. [Laslett G., Green P., Duddy I. and Gleadow A. (1987) Thermal annealing of fission tracks in apatite. Chem. Geol. 65, 1-13] annealing model predicts MTL up to 0.6 µm longer than those actually measured, whereas for apatites with intermediate to high chlorine content, which experienced temperatures >30°C, the predictions of the Laslett et al. (1987) model agree with the measured MTL data within error levels. With few exceptions, predictions by the Ketcham et al. [Ketcham R., Donelick R. and Carlson W. (1999) Variability of apatite fission-track annealing kinetics. III: Extrapolation to geological time scales. Am. Mineral. 84/9, 1235-1255] annealing model are consistent with the measured data for samples which remained at temperatures below ~30°C. For samples which experienced maximum temperatures between ~30 and 70°C, and which are rich in chlorine, the Ketcham et al. (1999) model overestimates track annealing.

Suites of basalts drilled during Legs 127 and 128 can be distinguished by their mineral assemblages and compositions of phenocrysts and groundmass phases. An upper suite of plagioclase phyric basaltic sills with a groundmass composed of plagioclase, augite, and magnetite was recovered from Site 794. The upper, evolved part of this suite is highly plagioclase phyric, including calcic plagioclases (~An90). The most primitive, lower part of this upper suite, in addition, contains olivine, but lacks calcic plagioclase. A lower suite at Site 794 is plagioclase and olivine phyric to aphyric basaltic sills and flows with a groundmass of plagioclase, augite, olivine (~Fo75-83), and magnetite. At Site 795, plagioclase and augite phyric basalts and andesites were recovered. The relatively low Ti and Cr contents of augite of these basalts suggest typical arc tholeiitic parental magmas. Two suites of basalt were recovered from Site 797, an upper suite of plagioclase and olivine phyric to aphyric olivine basalts, and a lower suite of evolved plagioclase phyric basaltic sills. The most evolved sills at both sites lack olivine as phenocryst and groundmass phases, while this phase is present in the relatively primitive sills. The olivine-bearing suites contain plagioclase with relatively low potassium content and augite with relatively high sodium content. An exception is the olivine-bearing sills of the upper suite at Site 794 that contains plagioclase with relatively high potassium content similar to the associated olivine-free sills. The olivine-free suites contain plagioclase with high potassium content and augite with low sodium content and have the most evolved compositions of any of the Japan Sea rocks.

This study focuses on the analysis of lake sediments retrieved from the deepest part of Lake Nam Co (Tibetan Plateau). One gravity core of 115 cm length, covering the last ~ 4000 cal BP, was analyzed for geochemical and biological parameters. High organic content at ~ 4000 cal BP and the coinciding presence of pyrite framboids until ~ 2000 cal BP point to hampered decomposition of organic material due to anoxic conditions within the lake sediments. At the same time sedimentological and biological proxies suggest a rather high lake level, but still ~ 5 m below the recent one, with less saline lake water due to enhanced monsoonal activity. During this time a change in the source of organic matter to lowered input of terrestrial components is observed. A rather quick shift to a dry environment with less monsoonal influence and a lake level ~ 15 m lower than today at ~ 2000 cal BP lead to the oxygenation of sediment, the degradation of organic matter and the absence of pyrite. Oscillations of the lake level thereafter were of minor amplitude and not able to establish anoxia at the lake bottom again. A wet spell between ~ 1500 cal BP and ~ 1150 cal BP is visible in proxies referring to catchment hydrology and the ostracod-based water depth transfer function gives only a slightly elevated lake level. The last ~ 300 years are characterized by low TOC and rising TN values reflecting enhanced nutrient supply and hence an advancing influence of human activity in the catchment. Decreasing TOC/TN values point to a complete shift to almost solely aquatic biomass production. These results show that hydrological variations in terms of lake level change based on monsoonal strength can be linked to redox conditions at the lake bottom of Nam Co. Comparison with other archives over larger parts of the Tibetan Plateau and beyond exhibits a rather homogeneous climatic pattern throughout the late Holocene.

A review of interstitial water samples collected from Sites 1003-1007 of the Bahamas Transect along with a shore-based analysis of oxygen and carbon isotopes, minor and trace elements, and sediment chemistry are presented. Results indicate that the pore-fluid profiles in the upper 100 meters below seafloor (mbsf) are marked by shifts between 20 and 40 mbsf that are thought to be caused by changes in sediment reactivity, sedimentation rates, and the influence of strong bottom currents that have been active since the late Pliocene. Pore-fluid profiles in the lower Pliocene-Miocene sequences are dominated by diffusion and do not show significant evidence of subsurface advective flow. Deeper interstitial waters are believed to be the in situ fluids that have evolved through interaction with sediments and diffusion. Pore-fluid chemistry is strongly influenced by carbonate recrystallization processes. Increases in pore-fluid Cl- and Na+ with depth are interpreted to result mainly from carbonate remineralization reactions that are most active near the platform margin. A lateral gradient in detrital clay content observed along the transect, leads to an overall lower carbonate reactivity, and enhances preservation of metastable aragonite further away from the platform margin. Later stage burial diagenesis occurs at slow rates and is limited by the supply of reactive elements through diffusion.

Acidic to intermediate volcanic rocks were obtained as boulders, pebbles, and clasts with intercalated matrix sediments near the Japan Trench. A 47.5-meter conglomerate bed unconformably overlies acoustic basement consisting of Upper Cretaceous siltstone and is overlain in turn by massive coarse-sandstone and siltstone beds with many fossil mollusks. The volcanic cobbles and boulders in the conglomerate show pronounced porphyritic texture. Their phenocrysts are plagioclase, hornblende, and biotite; the groundmass consists of plagioclase, K-feldspar, quartz, iron oxide, and altered interstitial glass. The Plagioclase content of these volcanic rocks is very high, whereas iron oxide minerals are rare. The chemical composition of these volcanic rocks was analyzed to determine the rock series. Matrix sediments were also analyzed chemically, and their chemical composition was found to be similar to that of volcanic rocks, except for a lower CaO content. SiO2 content of the volcanic rocks ranges from 60.23 to 73.90, corresponding to that of andesite to rhyolite. All the samples show extremely high Al2O3 content, which reflects the high amounts of modal plagioclase. These volcanic rocks belong to both the calc-alkalic and tholeiitic rock series, and the differentiation trend is controlled by fractional crystallization, mainly of plagioclase, K-feldspar, and hornblende. The assemblage of calc-alkalic and tholeiitic rock series is frequently observed in island arcs and active continental margins. These volcanic rocks are derived from the Oyashio ancient landmass, which is a slightly matured island arc.

Four dominant depositions of carbonaceous claystones are recognized to have occurred during the early Aptian to middle Albian at Site 534. There are correlations of stable isotope ratios with organic carbon content and of clay content with clay mineralogy of the samples. Almost all organic carbon in these sequences has very negative terrestrial isotope ratios, and the clay of that age indicates predominance of aluminous montmorillonite, which is thought to be of terrigenous origin. It is suggested that development of coastal vegetation belts and deltaic outbuilding with consequent outpouring of land-plant detritus and terrigenous elastics into the deep basins probably led to formation of the "black shale" facies.

Leg 58 successfully recovered basalt at Sites 442, 443, and 444, in the Shikoku Basin, and at Site 446 in the Daito Basin. Only at Site 442 did penetration reach unequivocal oceanic layer 2; at the other sites, only off-axis sills and flows were sampled. Petrographic observations indicate that back-arc basalts from the Shikoku Basin, with the exception of the kaersutite-bearing upper sill at Site 444, are mineralogically similar to basalts being erupted at normal mid-ocean ridges. However, the Shikoku Basin basalts are commonly very vesicular, indicating a high volatile content in the magmas. Site 446 in the Daito Basin penetrated a succession of 23 sills which include both kaersutite-bearing and kaersutite-free basalt varieties. A total of 187 samples from the four sites has been analyzed for major and trace elements using X-ray-fluorescence techniques. Chemically, the basalts from Sites 442 and 443 and the lower sill of Site 444 are subalkaline tholeiites and resemble N-type ocean-ridge basalts found along the East Pacific Rise and at 22° N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), although they are not quite as depleted in certain hygromagmatophile (HYG) elements. They do not show any chemical affinities with island-arc tholeiites. The basalts from Site 446 and from the upper sill at Site 444 show alkaline and tholeiitic tendencies, and are enriched in the more-HYG elements; they chemically resemble enriched or E-type basalts and their differentiates found along sections of the MAR (e.g., 45°N) and on ocean islands (e.g., Iceland and the Azores). Most of the intra-site variation may be attributed to crystal settling within individual massive flows and sills, to high-level fractional crystallization in sub-ridge magma chambers, or, where there is evidence of a long period of magmatic quiescence between units, to batch partial melting. However, the basalts from Sites 442 and 443 and from the lower sill at Site 444 cannot easily be related to those from Site 446 and the upper sill at Site 444, and it is possible that the different basalt types were derived from chemically distinct mantle sources. From comparison of the Leg 58 data with those already available for other intra-oceanic back-arc basins, it appears that the mantle sources giving rise to back-arc-basin basalts are chemically as diverse as those for mid-ocean ridges. In addition, the high vesicularity of the Shikoku Basin basalts supports previous observations that the mantle source of back-arc-basin basalts may be contaminated by a hydrous component from the adjacent subduction zone.

Sites 815 and 817 were drilled near the Townsville Trough during Leg 133 of the Ocean Drilling Program. The physical properties, compressional-wave velocity, and consolidation characteristics indicate that the periplatform carbonate sediments maintain more water content and lower compressional velocity near the Queensland Plateau than the clayey hemipelagic sediments, which have a clay content of up to 60%. Bulk density, void ratio or porosity, water content, and compressional-wave velocity are shown to have a linear relationship with burial depth. Between 3.5 and 5 Ma (about 100-500 mbsf), these physical properties maintained a constant rate vs. the depth in core because of the fast sedimentation-rate effect at Site 815. However, compressionalwave velocity still increases downward in this section. The clay content in this section causes an increase of bulk modulus and compaction effect. At Site 817, scarce terrigenous mud content and abundant carbonate content (88%-97%) cause a straight line relationship between physical properties and burial depth. During the consolidation test, we show that dominant micritic particles may cause faster acoustic velocity than sediments composed mainly of coccoliths. The bulk modulus ratio increasing rate in the clay-rich carbonate sediments is almost 4.5 times higher than in the clay-free periplatform carbonate sediments.

The Snake Pit active hydrothermal field was discovered at 23°22'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge during ODP Leg 106. Among the ten holes drilled in the mound at the foot of an active chimney, only three (649B, 649F, and 649G) had substantial recovery, and produced cores of unconsolidated hydrothermal deposit made up of porous sulfide fragments with minor talc pellets and biological debris, and a few pieces of brassy massive sulfides. Eight representative samples from the 6.5-m-long core from Hole 649B were analyzed for bulk chemistry, both by XRF (major elements) and NAA (trace elements). Major elements average compositions show high Fe (36 wt%), S (37 wt%), and Cu (12 wt%) contents, and minor Zn (6.7 wt%), reflecting a mostly high-temperature deposit. Trace elements are characterized by a high Au content (600 ppb) which could express the maturity of the mound. Mineralogical assemblages show evidence of sequential precipitation, and absence of equilibrium. Major sulfide phases are pyrrhotite, pyrite, Fe, Cu sulfides, marcasite, and sphalerite. Three types of samples are distinguished on the basis of textures and mineral assemblages: type 1, rich in pyrrhotite, with approximately equivalent amounts of Cu, Fe sulfides, and sphalerite and minor pyrite; type 2, rich in Cu, Fe sulfides, which are cubic cubanite with exsolutions and rims of chalcopyrite; and type 3, essentially made up of sphalerite. Type 2 samples likely represent fragments of the inner chimney wall. The presence of talc intergrown with cubic cubanite/chalcopyrite in one big piece from Hole 649G is probably related to mixing of the hydrothermal fluid with seawater.

Sedimentation and ore formation were studied in sediments from nine stations located along the 24°W profile in the Brazil Basin of the Atlantic Ocean. Bottom sediments are represented by mio- and hemipelagic muds, which are variably enriched in hydrothermal iron and manganese oxyhydroxides. As compared to bottom sediments from other basins of the Atlantic Ocean, the sediments in study are marked by extremely high manganese contents (up to 1.33%) and maximal enrichment in Ce. It was shown that the positive Ce anomaly is related to REE accumulation on iron oxyhydroxides. Influence of hydrothermal source leads to decrease of Ce anomaly and LREE/HREE ratio. In reduced sediments preservation of positive Ce anomaly and/or its disappearance was observed after iron and manganese reduction. REE contents were determined for the first time in the Ethmodiscus oozes of the Brazil Basin. Ore deposits of the Brazil Basin are represented by ferromanganese crusts and ferromanganese nodules. Judging from contents of iron, manganese, REE, and other trace elements, these formations are ascribed to sedimentation (hydrogenic) deposits. They are characterized by a notable positive Ce anomaly in the REE pattern. Extremely high Ce content (up to 96% of total REE) was discovered for the first time in the buried nodules (Mn/Fe = 0.88).

Lakes Prespa and Ohrid, in the Balkan region, are considered to be amongst the oldest lakes in Europe. Both lakes are hydraulically connected via karst aquifers. From Lake Ohrid, several sediment cores up to 15 m long have been studied over the last few years. Here, we document the first long sediment record from nearby Lake Prespa to clarify the influence of Lake Prespa on Lake Ohrid and the environmental history of the region. Radiocarbon dating and dated tephra layers provide robust age control and indicate that the 10.5 m long sediment record from Lake Prespa reaches back to 48 ka. Glacial sedimentation is characterized by low organic matter content and absence of carbonates in the sediments, which indicate oligotrophic conditions in both lakes. Holocene sedimentation is characterized by particularly high carbonate content in Lake Ohrid and by particularly high organic matter content in Lake Prespa, which indicates a shift towards more mesotrophic conditions in the latter. Long-term environmental change and short-term events, such as related to the Heinrich events during the Pleistocene or the 8.2 ka cooling event during the Holocene, are well recorded in both lakes, but are only evident in certain proxies. The comparison of the sediment cores from both lakes indicates that environmental change affects particularly the trophic state of Lake Prespa due to its lower volume and water depth.

Distribution of rare earth elements (REE) was studied in phosphorites collected from seamounts at depths from about 400 to 3600 m. In general phosphorites are characterized by high REE con¬tent, by a strong negative Ce anomaly, by a slight positive Gd anomaly, and by slight enrichment in heavy REE, which is also characteristic of seawater, where, to certain extent, composition of REE depends on depth. Comparison of REE composition in phosphorites and in seawater from the Northwest Pacific by means of Q-mode factor analysis revealed that REE have been transported into the phosphorites from various water depths following submergence of the seamounts. This corresponds to paleotectonic reconstructions, but is only partially consistent with age determinations of phosphorites.

Clay mineralogic and inorganic geochemical investigations of Cretaceous and Cenozoic sediments of the western Gulf of Mexico lead to the following main conclusions. (1) Transition of lowermost Cretaceous continental to marine sedimentation is marked by a clay evaporitic stage, north of the Campeche Escarpment. (2) Existence of combined mineralogic and geochemical stratigraphy allows us to propose correlations between Sites 535 and 540, especially for the Albian. (3) Predominance of detrital clay assemblages is indicative of hot and variably humid continental climate until the early late Cenozoic. (4) Tectonic destabilization of the margins of Gulf of Mexico occurred at different periods, especially until the middle Cretaceous, with a mixed erosion of rocks and soils and temporary oxidized conditions of deposition. (5) Successive developments of confined perimarine basins occurred from the earliest Cretaceous until the Miocene, chiefly in the Florida area. The sources of inorganic materials were chiefly situated on the east of the studied area until the late Tertiary and after that in the Mississippi River basin. (6) Occasionally, volcanic activity influenced the clay mineralogy and mainly the geochemistry, and possibly contributed to the rather strong magnesian character of the deposition until the late Paleogene. (7) The argillaceous diagenesis is weak; variability of the carbonate diagenesis is marked by the relation Sr = f(CaO) and chiefly depends on the depth of burial, the clay content, the porosity, and the geologic age.

Petrographical and geochemical studies of Neogene marine sediments from the Oman Sea (Leg 117, Sites 720, 724, 726 and 730), show a close relationship between the nature and amount of the organic matter, and the degree of degradation of organic matter by sulfate reduction, i.e. pyritization. Petrographically, three major pyritization types were observed: (1) Finely dispersed pyrite framboids in sediments from Oman Margin and Indus Fan, enriched in autochthonous marine organic matter. (2) Infilling of pores by massive pyrite crystals in Oman Margin sediments with a low TOC and a high microfossil content. (3) Pyrite mineralization of lignaceous fragments in organic-depleted sediments from the Indus Fan leading to more massive pyrite. Geochemically, we can define a sulfate reduction index (SRI) as the percentage of initial organic carbon versus that of residual organic carbon. Finely laminated Pliocene-Pleistocene sediments from the Oman Margin exclusively contain organic matter deriving from organic phytoplankton, for which the quantity (TOC) positively correlates with the geochemical quality (Hydrogen Index). We think that the occurrence of this residual organic matter is linked mainly to a high primary paleo-productivity. The intensity of sulfate reduction is constant for sediments with TOC up to 2% and becomes more important when organic input decreases. This degradation process can destroy up to 50% of the initial organic matter, but is not sufficient to explain some of the encountered very low TOC values. It can be seen that sharp increases of certain plankton species (with mineral skeletons) are responsible for a pronounced degradation of organic matter, due to increased sulfate reduction. In that case, the organic matter may be strongly degraded (high SRI), although deposited in an oxygen-depleted environment. Conversely, Miocene-Pliocene sediments contain an autochthonous organic matter that is typical of both low productivity and oxic processes; their very low sulfate reduction index indicates that very little metabolizable organic matter was initially present.

Late Campanian and Maastrichtian benthic foraminifers are recorded from 12 samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183, Cores 183-1138A-52R through 63R (487.3-602.4 meters below seafloor), Kerguelen Plateau, Indian Ocean, and Danian benthics from one sample in the same section. The entire late Maastrichtian foraminifer fauna is noted from a dredge sample 220 km to the north. The structure of the fauna is compared with the Cenomanian-Turonian of the nearby Eltanin core E54-7. Faunas are reviewed in terms of planktonic percentage, composition, epifaunal/infaunal ratios, and dominance/diversity indices. The region was in the cool Austral Faunal Province through the Campanian-Maastrichtian and was probably warmer in the Cenomanian-Turonian. The ODP section is now 1600 meters below sea level and has subsided several hundred meters since deposition. Its fauna is dominated by epifaunal species suggesting little influence of upwelling. The dredge location has subsided little. Its fauna has a high infaunal content consistent with significant influence of upwelling near the plateau edge. The dominant benthic species remain constant through the ODP Cretaceous section, but subdominance changes, and the section is divided into three informal zones based on dominance/subdominance characteristics of the benthic fauna. Brief taxonomic comments are made on several species and some are figured.
