The magnitude and the chronology of anthropogenic impregnation by Hg and other trace metals of environmental concern (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd and Pb, including its stable isotopes) in the sediments are determined at the DYFAMED station, a site in the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean) chosen for its supposed open-sea characteristics. The DYFAMED site (VD) is located on the right levee of the Var Canyon turbidite system, at the end of the Middle Valley. In order to trace the influence of the gravity current coming from the canyon on trace metal distribution in the sediment, we studied an additional sediment core (VA) from a terrace of the Var Canyon, and material collected in sediment traps at the both sites at 20 m above sea bottom. The patterns of Hg and other trace element distribution profiles are interpreted using stable Pb isotope ratios as proxies for its sources, taking into account the sedimentary context (turbidites, redox conditions, and sedimentation rates). Major element distributions, coupled with the stratigraphic examination of the sediment cores point out the high heterogeneity of the deposits at VA, and major turbiditic events at both sites. At the DYFAMED site, we observed direct anthropogenic influence in the upper sediment layer (<2 cm), while on the Var Canyon site (VA), the anthropization concerns the whole sedimentary column sampled (19 cm). Turbiditic events superimpose their specific signature on trace metal distributions. According to the 210Pbxs-derived sedimentation rate at the DYFAMED site (0.4 mm yr-1), the Hg-enriched layer of the top core corresponds to the sediment accumulation of the last 50 years, which is the period of the highest increase in Hg deposition on a global scale. With the hypothesis of the absence of significant post-depositional redistribution of Hg, the Hg/C-org ratio changes between the surface and below are used to estimate the anthropogenic contribution to the Hg flux accumulated in the sediment. The Hg enrichment, from pre-industrial to the present time is calculated to be around 60%, consistent with estimations of global Hg models. However, based on the chemical composition of the trapped material collected in sediment traps, we calculated that epibenthic mobilization of Hg would reach 73%. Conversely, the Cd/C-org ratio decreases in the upper 5 cm, which may reflect the recent decrease of atmospheric Cd inputs or losses due to diagenetic processes.

We report measurements of magnetic intensity, inclination, initial susceptibility, Koenigsberger's ratio, saturation magnetization, and Curie temperatures of 68 basalt samples from the Leg 83 section of Hole 504B. As in the upper part of the hole, reversely magnetized units predominate. Intensities of natural remanent magnetization vary widely, but the range of variation is an order of magnitude less than in the upper part of the hole. This and the other properties measured indicate that the magnetic characteristics of basalts from Hole 504B have been strongly affected by hydrothermal alteration, particularly in the deeper, Leg 83 section. The alteration states of the magnetic samples were studies using Xray diffraction, electron microprobe, X-ray fluorescence, and ion coupled plasma. Our results suggest three alteration zones in Hole 504B: a low-temperature zone (274.5-890 m) and two high-temperature zones (890-1050 m and 1050- 1350 m), differing in the number of veins observed in the samples and presumably differing in the volumes of hydrothermal fluids which reacted with the basalts.

Distribution patterns of gold, platinum group metals (PGE), and volatile components are studied in the main rock types of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge lithosphere (ultrabasites, gabbro, and basalts) from the transform fracture zone at 15°20'N. It is ascertained that PGE content depends on the reduction degree of fluids, on rock types, and on their formation conditions. It is noted that concentrations of refractory elements (Os, Ir, Rh) decrease, while those of fusible elements (Pt, Pd, Au) increase with depth. The chondrite type of distribution is only noted in the ultrabasite rocks. Increase in water and CO2 contents and in oxidation degree of fluids occurs with transition from basalts to ultrabasites, as well as from normal magmatic systems to fluid-enriched anomalous systems.

Primary sulfides from cores of ODP Holes 158-957M, 158-957C, and 158-957H on the active TAG hydrothermal mound (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°08'N) have been studied for concentrations of several chemical elements. Based on 262 microprobe analyses it has been found that the sulfides have extremely heterogeneous distribution of noble metals (Au, Ag, Pt, and Pd) and several associated elements (Hg, Co, and Se). Noble metals are arranged in the following order in terms of decreasing abundance, i.e. concentration level above detection limits (the number of analyses containing a specific element is given in parentheses): Au (65), Ag (46), Pt (21), and Pd (traces). The associated trace elements have the following series: Co (202), Hg (132), and Se (49). The main carriers of "invisible" portion of the noble metals are represented by pyrite (Au, Hg), marcasite and pyrite (Ag, Co), sphalerite and chalcopyrite (Pt, Pd), and chalcopyrite (Se). Noble metal distribution in sulfides reveals a lateral zonality: maximal concentrations and abundance of Au in chalcopyrite (or Pt and Ag in chalcopyrite and pyrite) increase from the periphery (Hole 957H) to the center (holes 957C and 957M) of the hydrothermal mound, while Au distribution in pyrite displays a reversed pattern. Co concentration increases with depth. Vertical zonality in distribution of the elements mentioned above and their response to evolution of ore genesis are under discussion in the paper.

In 1995-1997 three oceanographic cruises to the White Sea were undertaken in the framework of the INTAS project 94-391, and a multi-disciplinary geochemical study of the major North Dvina estuary has been carried out. Distribution of temperature, salinity and concentration of suspended matter in water columm, as well as contents of Al, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn, and organic carbon contents in suspended matter and sediments of the North Dvina estuary were determined. Most of the metals and organic matter studied appear to be of terrestrial origin, since the main source of investigated elements in the estuary is river run-off. It was found that metals incorporated in minerals are absolutely prevailing forms in estuarine sediments, they comprise up to 60-99% of total metal contents. Two zones of metal accumulation in the sediments were found in the North Dvina estuary. These zones are considered as local geochemical barriers within a major river-sea barrier. Distribution of most elements studied in the sediments of the North Dvina estuary is controlled by grain size variability in the sediments. Analysis of data on heavy metal contents in the sediments and bivalves of the North Dvina estuary did not reveal any anthropogenic heavy metal pollution in the region.
