Radiolarians were observed at all five sites drilled during DSDP Leg 58. Three sites (442, 443, 444) are south of Japan in the Shikoku Basin. The remaining two sites (445, 446) are east of Okinawa, in the Daito Ridge and Basin areas. The observations made on radiolarians during Leg 58 are understood best by considering these two areas separately. The basement ages, preservation, diagenesis, and paleoecology are similar within each area, but different between the two areas. The radiolarian zones of Riedel and Sanfilippo (1978) were used to determine the sediment age. Because of the mixed nature of the fauna, there was an opportunity to test the tropical zonation in middlelatitude sediments. A middle- to high-latitude biostratigraphy for the Pliocene and Pleistocene has been formulated (Hays, 1970; Kling, 1973; Foreman, 1975), but there is no Miocene radiolarian zonation for these latitudes. The tropical elements of the present fauna are sufficient to use the low-latitude zonation, although there is a loss of resolution in the Pleistocene. Because of poor preservation, zone boundaries are indistinct in much of the cored sediment. Determination of abundance in any sample is always subjective and varies among investigators. This work was in its final stages at the publication of Westberg and Riedel (1978), and the guidelines outlined therein are not closely followed. The abundances recorded in Tables 1 through 5 are based on strewn slides which were searched entirely if an individual of a species was found, or for 8 to 10 minutes if the species was not found.

Andesitic volcaniclastic sandstones of Middle Eocene age recovered from DSDP Sites 445 and 446, a back-arc basin, contain clinoptilolite, heulandite and analcite as a pore-filling cement. Clinoptilolite and heulandite at Sites 445 and 446 contain different chemical composition from other deep-sea clinoptilolites and heulandites. The dominant cation of both clinoptilolite and heulandite is Na+ ion activity in pore water was greater at the time of their formation. Volcanic glass has acted as a precursor for both clinoptilolite and heulandite at Sites 445 and 446. Biogenic silica is also suggested as a precursor. High Na+ ion activity in pore water also helped to transform clinoptilolite and heulandite to analcite downhole. The necessary Na+ ions for this clinoptilolite, heulandite and analcite at Sites 445 and 446 might have been provided by hydrothermal circulation of seawater through more permeable sandstones deposited during early stages of back-arc basin rifting.

I obtained 68 quarter sections of cores from the JOIDES Organic Geochemistry Panel for studying type, distribution, and stages of organic diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter in the West Philippine and Parece Vela basins and Mariana Trough area (Figure 1). The present chapter compares (1) 11 geochemical parameters used to determine organic source and its stage of genesis within the 9 site locations in this study area and (2) compares these 11 with the same parameters reported from Leg 56, outer trench slope of the Japan Trench, and Leg 60, Mariana Trough and Trench (Schorno, in press a, b). Even though these sediments are considered pelagic, the organic content in most of the core sections appears to be hemipelagic. The sedimentary organic matter in these cores is believed to be in an early stage of diagenesis. Both conclusions are based primarily on the fl-alkane distribution within the organic matter. This particular parameter, I note later, has a major weakness. As Hunt (Hunt, 1979) and I (in press b) observed, marine organisms synthesize /z-alkanes with distributions containing neither odd nor even preferences. Thus those sediments that did contain w-alkane distributions with OEP near 1, suggesting a late stage of catagenesis, may in actuality be immature marine sediments.

Nineteen core samples from the Shikoku Basin and the Daito Ridge and Basin province of the northwest Philippine Sea, obtained from DSDP Leg 58, were examined for products of chlorophyll diagenesis; we aimed at gaining a better understanding of the very early diagenetic history of sedimentary chlorophyll. We choose samples which, a priori, would allow isolation of tetrapyrrole pigments characteristic of (destructive) diagenesis modes. Studies of Japan Trench sediments (Louda et al., 1980; Baker and Louda, 1980) showed well the interplay of two main diagenesis schemes: anoxic preservation and oxic destruction. The results reported herein are a product of a preliminary investigation on sediments of scant organic matter content, which yielded limited tetrapyrrole pigment.

The fact that the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) intensity of mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (MORB) samples shows systematic variations as a function of age has long been recognized: maximum as well as average intensities are generally high for very young samples, falling off rather rapidly to less than half the recent values in samples between 10 and 30 Ma, whereupon they slowly rise in the early Tertiary and Cretaceous to values that approach those of the very young samples. NRM intensities measured in this study follow the same trends as those observed in previous publications. In this study, we take a statistical approach and examine whether this pattern can be explained by variations in one or more of all previously proposed mechanisms: chemical composition of the magnetic minerals, abundance of these magnetization carriers, vectorial superposition of parallel or antiparallel components of magnetization, magnetic grain or domain size patterns, low-temperature oxidation to titanomaghemite, or geomagnetic field behavior. We find that the samples do not show any compositional, petrological, rock-magnetic, or paleomagnetic patterns that can explain the trends. Geomagnetic field intensity is the only effect that cannot be directly tested on the same samples, but it shows a similar pattern as our measured NRM intensities. We therefore conclude that the geomagnetic field strength was, on-average, significantly greater during the Cretaceous than during the Oligocene and Miocene.

Detrital modes for 524 deep-marine sand and sandstone samples recovered on circum-Pacific, Caribbean, and Mediterranean legs of the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the Ocean Drilling Program form the basis for an actualistic model for arc-related provenance. This model refines the Dickinson and Suczek (1979) and Dickinson and others (1983) models and can be used to interpret the provenance/tectonic history of ancient arc-related sedimentary sequences. Four provenance groups are defined using QFL, QmKP, LmLvLs, and LvfLvmiLvl ternary plots of site means: (1) intraoceanic arc and remnant arc, (2) continental arc, (3) triple junction, and (4) strike-slip-continental arc. Intraoceanic- and remnant-arc sands are poor in quartz (mean QFL%Q < 5) and rich in lithics (QFL%L > 75); they are predominantly composed of plagioclase feldspar and volcanic lithic fragments. Continental-arc sand can be more quartzofeldspathic than the intraoceanic- and remnant-arc sand (mean QFL%Q values as much as 10, mean QFL%F values as much as 65, and mean QmKP%Qm as much as 20) and has more variable lithic populations, with minor metamorphic and sedimentary components. The triple-junction and strike-slip-continental groups compositionally overlap; both are more quartzofeldspathic than the other groups and show highly variable lithic proportions, but the strike-slip-continental group is more quartzose. Modal compositions of the triple junction group roughly correlate with the QFL transitional-arc field of Dickinson and others (1983), whereas the strike-slip-continental group approximately correlates with their dissected-arc field.
