Coastal upwelling regions have been identified as sites of enhanced CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. The coastal upwelling area off Mauritania (NW Africa) is one of the most biologically productive regions of the world's ocean but its CH4 emissions have not been quantified so far. More than 1000 measurements of atmospheric and dissolved CH4 in the surface layer in the upwelling area off Mauritania were performed as part of the German SOPRAN (Surface Ocean Processes in the Anthropocene) study during two cruises in March/April 2005 (P320/1) and February 2007 (P348). During P348 enhanced CH4 saturations of up to 200% were found close to the coast and were associated with upwelling of South Atlantic Central Water. An area-weighted, seasonally adjusted estimate yielded overall annual CH4 emissions in the range from 1.6 to 2.9 Gg CH4. Thus the upwelling area off Mauritania represents a regional hot spot of CH4 emissions but seems to be of minor importance for the global oceanic CH4 emissions.

Muskoxen populations were surveyed in the course of 3 expeditions to North East Greenland to provide data on present status and habitat requirements in the region between 72 and 74 deg latitude North. The distribution is primarily affected by the snow cover pattern and shows densities from less than 0.1 ind/km**2 to 1.5 ind/km**2. Ranges unutilized by muskoxen prior to 1940 now support high densities. The snow cover influences also the population dynamics, as shown by the streng correlation between the calf crop and the amount of snow. The total population is estimated to be about 1000 to 1500 individuals far the whole region.

Vertical distributions and diel migrations of the main species of micronekton, four euphausiids, one mysid, one decapod and three fishes, were described in detail in the 0-1000 m water column on a fixed station in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. The euphausiids Euphausia krohni and Thysanopoda aequalis, the decapod Gennadas elegans and, to a lesser extent, the fish Argyropelecus hemigymnus were shown to perform clear diel vertical migrations. Results of horizontal hauls at a given depth around sunrise and sunset showed a marked diurnal symmetry of the migratory cycles, particularly for E.krohni, T.aequalis and G.elegans. The behaviour of the euphausiid Nematoscelis megalops was more complex: it presented a repetitive bimodal day distribution and only part of its population migrated. As very weak or non-migrators we found the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the bathypelagic mysid Eucopia unguiculata, for which migration concerned only some of the older individuals. The fishes Cyclothone braueri and Cyclothone pygmaea appeared to be non-migrants. As depth increased, C.braueri was replaced by C.pygmaea, with maximum concentrations at 350-550 and 550-700 m depth, respectively.

New maps of free-air and the Bouguer gravity anomalies on the Weddell Sea sector (70-81° S, 6-75° W) of Antarctica are presented. These maps are based on the first computer compilation of available gravity data collected by ''Sevmorgeologia'' in 1976-89 in the southern Weddell Sea and adjacent coasts of western Dronning Maud Land (WDML) and Coats Land. The accomplished gravity studies comprise airborne observations with a line spacing of about 20 km and conventional measurements at over-the-ice points, which were spaced at 10-30 km and supplemented by seismic soundings. Hence, anomalies on the maps represent mainly large-scale and deep crustal features. The dominant feature in free-air gravity map is a large dipolar gravity anomaly stretching along the continental margin. Following the major grain of seabed morphology this shelf-edge/slope anomaly (SESA) is clearly divided into three segments characterized by diverse anomaly amplitudes, wavelengths and trends. They are associated with continental margins of different geotectonic provinces of Antarctica surrounding the Weddell Sea. Apparent distinctions in the SESA signatures are interpreted as the gravity expression of tectonic, deep crustal structure segmentation of the continental margin. The prominent gravity highs (100-140 mGal) of the shelf edge anomaly mapped along WDML are assumed to represent high-density mantle injections intruded into the middle/lower crust during initial rifting of continental breakup. Enlarged wavelengths and diminished amplitudes of the gravity anomaly westwards, along the Weddell Sea embayment (WSE) margin, reflect a widening of the continental slope and a significant increase in thickness of underlying sediment strata. Low amplitude, negative free-air anomalies in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelves (FRIS) contrast sharply with the dominating positive anomalies offshore. This indicates a greater sedimentary thickness of the basin in this area. Crustal response to the enlarged sediment load is impressed in mostly positive features of the Bouguer gravity field observed here. Two pronounced positive Bouguer anomalies of 50-70 mGal and an average widths of 200 km dominate the Weddell Sea embayment margins towards the Antarctic Peninsula and the East Antarctic craton. They correlate well with very deep seabed troughs (> 1000 m below sea level). The gravity highs are most likely caused by a shallow upper mantle underneath graben-rift structures evolved at the margins of the WSE basin. A regional zone (> 100 km in width) of the prominent Bouguer and free-air negative anomalies (-40 to -60 mGal) adjacent Coats Land to the north of the ice shelf edge may indicate the presence of the thick old cratonic crust far offshore beneath the Weddell Sea Embayment.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 169S retrieved a complete Holocene sequence from Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada. Fish and diatom remains were extracted from sediments at Site 1034. Very small fish bones, teeth and scales were ubiquitous except in the lowermost glaciomarine clays; scales degraded with depth. In the identifiable fraction, Pacific herring were the most abundant with Pacific hake and cartilaginous fish yielding significant fractions. Fish remains appear just before 12 000 BP but greatest diversity does not occur until about 6500 BP. A smoothed abundance curve highlights two periods of maximal abundance at about 1500 and 6500 BP. Abundances in the last 1000 years are lower than the rest of the record. A correlation with abundances of seven phytoplankton taxa is significant; diatoms explain about a third of the variance. This study demonstrates the use of fish and diatoms from the same paleosedimentary matrix to examine millennia-scale correlations between primary and tertiary production.

Compressional and shear wave velocities at confining pressures to 6 kb, densities, and porosities were measured for 32 samples obtained from 836 to 1350 m below seafloor (BSF) in Hole 504B, the section drilled on Leg 83 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These data in combination with similar measurements on 28 basalt samples from the section from 274.5 to 836 m, drilled on Legs 69 and 70, provide a comprehensive set of physical property data for over 1000 m of oceanic crust. The velocities, densities, and porosities measured in the laboratory exhibit greater variability in the upper portion of the hole. In general, compressional and shear wave velocities and densities increase with depth, reaching average values at 1 kbar of Vp = 6.45 km/s, Ks = 3.45 km/s and p = 2.94 g/cm3 within the sheeted dike section. Porosities decrease with depth to values generally less than 1% near the bottom of the hole
