Both the biomass of autotrophic dinoflagellates and its contribution to total chlorophyll were found to increase significantly with seawater temperature and the level of stratification in southern Patagonian waters during spring and winter. The highest peak of biomass corresponded to a single species, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and was detected in middle shelf waters, coinciding with the primary productivity and CO2 uptake maxima reported for the area under spring conditions.

A study of chemical and isotopic composition of coastal thermal springs and waters of the Kraternaya Bay, Yankicha Island, revealed that the total mineralization and concentrations of d18O and d2H decrease from the thermal spring site I to V. These waters are of marine origin with various proportions of local meteoric water. Thermal waters of the site VI have considerably altered chemical and isotopic composition due to high temperatures of surrounding rocks. Base temperatures calculated for this area were 130-200°C. Coastal thermal springs affect isotopic composition of water throughout the bay.

Concentrations of sulfate ions at three depths in the water column of the Black Sea were studied during cruises of the GOIN (State Oceanographic Institute) Sevastopol' Division in 1983 and 1985. Results were compared with data from earlier studies. Obtained data indicate pronounced lateral and temporal variation in the SO4/Cl ratio.
