Seven sites were drilled off the eastern shore of New Zealand during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 181 to gain knowledge of southwest Pacific ocean history, in particular, the evolution of the Pacific Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). Holes 1123C and 1124C penetrated lower Oligocene to middle Eocene sediments containing moderately to poorly preserved calcareous nannofossils. Nannofossil assemblages show signs of dissolution and overgrowth, but key marker species can be identified. Nannofossil abundance ranges from abundant to barren. The lower Oligocene sediments are distinctly separated from the overlying Neogene sequences by the Marshall Paraconformity, a regional marker of environmental and sea level change. An age-depth model for Hole 1123C through this sequence was constructed using nine nannofossil age datums and three magnetostratigraphic datums. There is good agreement between the biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy, which indicates that the Marshall Paraconformity spans ~12 m.y. in Hole 1123C. The same sequence in Hole 1124C is disrupted by at least three hiatuses, complicating interpretation of the sedimentation history. The Marshall Paraconformity spans at least 3 m.y. in Hole 1124C. A 4- m.y. gap separates lower Oligocene and middle Eocene sediments, and a ~15 m.y. hiatus separates middle Eocene mudstones from middle Paleocene nannofossil-bearing mudstones. Nannofossil biostratigraphy from Holes 1123C and 1124C indicates that the Eocene-Oligocene transition was a time of fluctuating biota and intensification of the DWBC along the New Zealand margin.

The under-ice habitat and fauna were studied during a typical winter situation at three stations in the western Barents Sea. Dense pack ice (7-10/10) prevailed and ice thickness ranged over <0.1-1.6 m covered by <0.1-0.6 m of snow. Air temperatures ranged between -1.8 and -27.5°C. The ice undersides were level, white and smooth. Temperature and salinity profiles in the under-ice water (0-5 m depth) were not stratified (T=-1.9 to -2.0°C and S=34.2-34.7). Concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high and concentrations of algal pigments were very low (0.02 µg chlorophyll a/l), indicating the state of biological winter. Contents of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen ranged over 84.2-241.3 and 5.3-16.4 µg/l, respectively, the C/N ratio over 11.2-15.5 pointing to the dominance of detritus in the under-ice water. Abundances of amphipods at the ice underside were lower than in other seasons: 0-1.8 ind/m**2 for Apherusa glacialis, 0-0.7 ind/m**2 for Onisimus spp., and 0-0.8 ind/m**2 for Gammarus wilkitzkii. A total of 22 metazoan taxa were found in the under-ice water, with copepods as the most diverse and numerous group. Total abundances ranged over 181-2,487 ind/m**3 (biomass: 70-2,439 µg C/m**3), showing lower values than in spring, summer and autumn. The dominant species was the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus minutus (34-1,485 ind/m**3), contributing 19-65% to total abundances, followed by copepod nauplii (85-548 ind/m**3) and the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis (44-262 ind/m**3). Sympagic (ice-associated) organisms occurred only rarely in the under-ice water layer.

Abundance of microzooplankton was studied from August to October 1970 in a ship laboratory using the method of concentration of water samples by filtration and then counting living organisms under a microscope. The main groups (in order of decreasing abundance) were as follows: infusorians, nauplii, copepodids, radiolarians, appendicularians, and some others (rotifers, worm and mollusk larvae). Concentration of infusorians rarely exceeded 100 #/l, possibly an underestimate. Nauplii often numbered 20 to 30 #/l. Study of vertical distribution of microzooplankton showed that peak concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea were at depth of 20-30 m regardless of day time. There were 2 peaks in the Atlantic Ocean, one in the 10- to 20-m layer, the other in the 50- to 75-m layer.

The monograph highlights extensive materials collected during expeditions of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. We consider facial conditions of nodule formation, regularities of their distribution, stratigraphic position, petrography, mineral composition, textures, geochemistry of nodules and hosting sediments. Origin of iron-manganese nodules in the Pacific Ocean is considered as well.

The SESRU01 macrozooplankton dataset contains data collected in April 2008 at 19 stations located between 37°E and 39.5°E and between 42.4°N and 44.5°N in the north-eastern Black Sea. Samples were collected with a Ring net. Vertical tows of a Ring net, with mouth area 0.5 m**2, mesh size 400µm. Sample was taken from the layer 0-40 m. Towing speed: 0.8m/s. Samples were analyzed on board without preservation. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Macrozooplankton species were identified and enumerated.
