Chemical and isotopic (Nd and Sr) compositions have been determined for 12 Cretaceous basaltic samples (108 Ma old) from Holes 417D and 418A of Legs 51,52 and 53. We have found that: (1) The chemical compositions are typical of MORB. They do not vary systematically with the stratigraphic positions of the analyzed samples; thus, the chemical evolution is independent of the eruption sequence that occurred at this Cretaceous ridge. (2) REE patterns for all rocks are characterized by a strong LREE depletion with (La/Sm)N = 0.38-0.50; no significant Eu anomalies are found; HREE are nearly flat or slightly depleted towards Yb-Lu and have 12-18 * chondritic abundances. Combining the results of previous studies, it suggests that no significant temporal and spatial variation in magma chemistry (especially for LIL elements) has occurred in the 'normal' ridge segments over the last 150 Ma. (3) lsotopically, 143Nd/144Nd ratios vary from 0.513026 to 0.513154, corresponding to epsilon-Nd(0) = +7.5 to +10, and they fall in the typical range of MORB. However, these rocks have unexpectedly high 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70355-0.70470) which are attributed to the result of seawater-rock interaction. (4) The Nd model ages (Tin), ranging from 1.53 to 2.47 (average 2.06) AE, suggest that the upper mantle source(s) underwent a large scale chemical differentiation leading to LREE and other LIL element depletion about 2 AE ago, assuming a simple two-stage model. More realistically, the variation in Tm(Nd) or epsilon-Nd could be derived from mixing of heterogeneous mantle sources that were a consequence of continuous mantle differentiation and continental formation. (5) Because of the low mg values (0.52-0.63), the analyzed basaltic rocks do not represent primary liquids of mantle melting. The variation in La/Sm ratios and TiO2 are not compatible with a model in which all rocks are genetically related by a simple fractional crystallization. Rather, it is proposed that the basaltic rocks might have been derived from some heterogeneous upper mantle source with or without later magmatic mixing, and followed by some shallow-level fraetionations.

CO2 leakage from subsurface storage sites is one of the main concerns connected with the CCS technology. As CO2 leakages into near surface formations appear to be very unlikely within pilot CCS projects, the aim of this work is to emulate a leakage by injecting CO2 into a near surface aquifer. The two main questions pursued by the injection test are (1) to investigate the impact of CO2 on the hydrogeochemistry of the groundwater as a base for groundwater risk assessment and (2) to develop and apply monitoring methods and monitoring concepts for detecting CO2 leakages in shallow aquifers. The presented injection test is planned within the second half of 2010, as a joint project of the University of Kiel (Germany), the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research (Leipzig, Germany) and the Engineering Company GICON (Dresden, Germany). The test site has been investigated in detail using geophysical methods as well as direct-push soundings, groundwater well installation and soil and groundwater analyses. The present paper presents briefly the geological and hydrogeological conditions at the test site as well as the planned injection test design and monitoring concept.

Marked variations in the chemical and mineralogical composition of sediments at Site 319 have occurred during the 15 My history of sedimentation at this site. The change in composition through time parallels the variability observed in surface sediments from various parts of the Nazca Plate and can be related to variations in the proportion of hydrothermal, hydrogenous, detrital and biogenous phases reaching this site at different times. Metal accumulation rates at Site 319 reach a maximum near the basement for most elements, suggesting a strong hydrothermal contribution during the early history of this site. The hydrothermal contribution decreased rapidly as Site 319 moved away from the spreading center, although a subtle increase in this source is detectable about the time spreading began on the East Pacific Rise. The most recent sedimentation exhibits a strong detritalhydrogenous influence. Post-depositional diagenesis of amorphous phases has converted them to ironrich smectite and well-crystallized goethite without significantly altering the bulk composition of the sediment.

Facies zonation of the Cape basin with respect to Fe-Mn nodules based on data from Cruise 43 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov and published data is presented. Three facies regions are distinguished: the southern end of the Walvis Ridge and seamounts, the continental slope of the Southwest Africa and the deep-water Cape Basin. Iron-manganese nodules in the first of these areas are predominantly sedimentary, those in the second area are diagenetic and those in the third are sedimentary-diagenetic. Chemical characteristics and type of metallogenic specialization for each of the regions are identified.

Bioaccumulation of metals by zoobenthos was investigated during cruise 11A of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in the vicinity of a gas-hydrate seep off Paramushir Island in the Sea of Okhotsk. Atomic absorption studies of concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn in zoobenthos (polychaetes, bivalves, ophiurans and echinoderms) collected from depths of 700-800 m indicated that their concentrations in individuals near the seep were not significantly different from those in individuals from other communities. Obtained results indicate that sea urchins and holothurians (non-sorting bottom-feeders) can separate mineral fraction of ingested bottom material.
