Some years ago a fossil lake basin was found in the northeastern part of the former Rhine-pied- mont-glacier, situated between the endmoraine system ofthe elassical Riß- andWürm glacia- tions, respectively. The lacustrine sediments contain the pollenflora ofthe Eemian interglacial. They are intensively thrusted. These sediments are eovered by a loam-layer, rieh in elasts. The thickness of this loam-layer varies between at least 170 and 400 cm. It consists in its major part of loess-loam and solifluction material. Yet just on top of the lake sediments mentioned an in- tensively compressed loam, characterized by quarzgrains with all features of glacially pressed material, together with striated elasts is met with. It strongly resembles atil!. Ifthis is true, the stratigraphie division ofthe last glaciation strongly deviates from the hitherto accepted scheme, incorporating an early glacier advance, long before the elassical young-endmoraine systems of the Würm glaciation were formed.

Remains of diatoms, molluscs, ostracods, foraminifera and pollen exines preserved in the sediments of Lago d'Averno, a volcanic lake in the Phlegrean Fields west of Naples, allowed us to reconstruct the changes in the ecological conditions of the lake and of the vegetation around it for the period from 800 BC to 800 AD. Lago d'Averno was at first a freshwater lake, temporarily influenced by volcanic springs. Salinity increased slowly during Greek times as a result of subsidence of the surrounding land. Saline conditions developed only after the lake was connected with the sea by a canal, when Portus Julius was built in 37 BC. The first post-Roman period of uplift ended with a short freshwater phase during the 7th century after Christ. Deciduous oakwoods around the lake was transformed into a forest of evergreen oaks in Greek times and thrived there - apparently almost uninfluenced by man - until it was felled, when the Avernus was incorporated into the new Roman harbour in 37 BC, to construct a shipyard and other military buildings there. Land-use was never more intense than during Roman times and weakest in Greek and Early Roman times, when the Avernus was considered a holy place, the entrance to the underworld.

To assess the paleoceanographic potential of Leg 186 sediments, we investigated Quaternary calcareous nannofossil flora at Sites 1150 and 1151 in the Japan Trench. Because of the frequent occurrence of barren intervals and the lack of oxygen isotope data, a detailed paleoceanography is not feasible for these cores. We limited our study to the upper 26.07 m of the section from Hole 1150A and the upper 21.01 m of the section from Hole 1151C. The studied samples from Cores 186-1150A-1H through 3H are younger than 0.085 Ma. Core 186-1151C-1H (upper 1.92 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) is younger than 0.085 Ma, and samples between 2H-7, 5-7 cm, and 3H-CC, 5-7 cm, (9.99-21.01 mbsf) are older than 0.245 Ma and younger than 0.408 Ma.

Neutron activation analyses of iridium and other chemical elements were performed across a 1-m-thick, partly nonbioturbated, clay-rich interval at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in ODP Hole 738C. The results show that the boundary interval holds one of the highest Ir enrichments (320 ng Ir/cm2) of all known Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary layers. Iridium concentrations are highest (18 ppb Ir, whole-rock samples) a few centimeters above the base of the clayrich interval and gradually tail off upsection. Compared with background levels the most Ir-rich interval also shows strongly enhanced concentrations of Cr (215 ppm) and slightly elevated Co concentrations (13 ppm). The Ir-rich interval shows low As (< 15 ppm) and Sb (<0.8 ppm) concentrations, a fact that is congruent with absence of abundant authigenic sulfides in the sediment. Irregularly distributed Fe enrichments and a greenish gray color of the Fe-rich intervals may indicate the presence of glauconitic clay minerals and suboxic, slightly reducing conditions during deposition. Rare earth element (REE) abundance patterns change considerably across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval, reflecting either a change in Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary seawater REE composition or the occurrence of different REE fractionation processes due to changing depositional environment. Element-vs.-element ratios of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc are similar between the most Ir-rich layers of the boundary section and other levels with lower Ir concentrations. This may imply that the clay fraction of the Ir-rich layers of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval is made up predominantly of locally derived material. Calculated calcite-free abundances of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc, on the other hand, are reconcilable with an extraneous origin of the bulk of the clay in the most Ir-rich layers. The Ir in the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary clay-rich zone in Hole 738C is most likely derived from an earth-impacting asteroid; however, the origin of the clay-rich zone remains enigmatic.

We present a record encompassing marine isotope stages 7-1 from a hitherto unexplored and heavily ice-covered area of the Arctic Ocean, the Lomonosov Ridge off the northern Greenland-Canada continental margin, using nannofossil and benthic foraminifera stratigraphy. Planktic foraminifera assemblages are used as a key paleoceanographic proxy, and a surprisingly large variability is found for an interior Arctic Ocean site. Abundant small (63-125 µm) subpolar Turborotalita quinqueloba occur in two sections, possibly representing substages 5e (last interglacial) and 5a (warm interstadial). However, the present-day circulation pattern and the very distant location of high productive regions cannot explain such high abundances of subpolar specimens in the interior, perennially sea ice-covered Arctic Ocean. Hence our proxy record indicates that last interglacial sea ice concentrations were reduced off some areas of northern Greenland-Canada. Whether this was part of a larger regional pattern or it represents the influence of polynya areas with locally increased productivity remains to be solved. With respect to glacial conditions, increased ice-rafted debris (IRD) deposition in the area appears to be associated with glacial stages 6, 4, and late 3. Stage 2 sediments (including the Last Glacial Maximum) are condensed with a sparse IRD content only.

The influence of orbital precession on early Paleogene climate and ocean circulation patterns in the southeast Pacific region is investigated by combining environmental analyses of cyclic Middle Eocene sediments and palynomorph records recovered from ODP Hole 1172A on the East Tasman Plateau with climate model simulations. Integration of results indicates that in the marine realm, direct effects of precessional forcing are not pronounced, although increased precipitation/runoff could have enhanced dinoflagellate cyst production. On the southeast Australian continent, the most pronounced effects of precessional forcing were fluctuations in summer precipitation and temperature on the Antarctic Margin. These fluctuations resulted in vegetational changes, most notably in the distribution of Nothofagus (subgenus Brassospora). The climate model results suggest significant fluctuations in sea ice in the Ross Sea, notably during Austral summers. This is consistent with the influx of Antarctic heterotrophic dinoflagellates in the early part of the studied record. The data demonstrate a strong precessionally driven climate variability and thus support the concept that precessional forcing could have played a role in early Antarctic glaciation via changes in runoff and/or precipitation.

The occurrence of diatom species in the Eocene-Oligocene sections of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 115 sites and Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 219 and 236 in the low-latitude Indian Ocean are investigated. Diatoms are generally rare and poorly preserved in the Paleogene sequences we studied. The best-preserved assemblages are found close to ash layers in early Oligocene sediments. The low-latitude diatom zonation established for the Atlantic region by Fenner in 1984 is fully applicable to the Paleogene sequences of the western Indian Ocean. Correlation of the diatom zones to the calcareous nannofossil stratigraphy of the sites places the Coscinodiscus excavatus Zone of Fenner within calcareous nannofossil Subzone CP16b. For the Mascarene Plateau and the Chagos Ridge, the times when the sites studied, together with the areas upslope from them, subsided to below the euphotic zone are deduced from changes in the relative abundance between the group of benthic, shallow-water species and Grammatophora spp. vs. the group of fully planktonic diatom species. The Eocene section of Site 707, on the Mascarene Plateau, is characterized by the occurrence of benthic diatoms (approximately 10% of the diatom assemblage). These allochthonous diatoms must have originated from shallow-water environments around volcanic islands that existed upslope from ODP Site 707 in Eocene times. In Oligocene and younger sediments of Sites 707 and 706, occurrences of benthic diatoms are rare and sporadic and interpreted as reworked from older sediments. This indicates that the area upslope from these two Mascarene Plateau sites had subsided below the euphotic zone by the early Oligocene. Only Grammatophora spp., for which a neritic but not benthic habitat is assumed, continues to be abundant throughout the Oligocene sequences. The area of the Madingley Rise sites (Sites 709-710) and nearby shallower areas subsided below the euphotic zone already in middle Eocene times, as benthic diatoms are almost absent from these Eocene sections. Only sites located on abyssal plains, and which intermittently received turbidite sediments (e.g., Sites 708 and 711), contain occasionally single, benthic diatoms of Oligocene age. The occurrence of the freshwater diatom Aulacosira granulata in a few samples of late early Oligocene and late Oligocene age at Sites 707, 709, and 714 is interpreted as windblown. Their presence indicates at least seasonally arid conditions for these periods in the source areas of eastern Africa and India. Three new species and two new combinations are defined: Chaetoceros asymmetricus Fenner sp. nov.; Hemiaulus gracilis Fenner, sp. nov.; Kozloviella meniscosa Fenner, sp. nov.; Cestodiscus demergitus (Fenner) Fenner comb, nov.; and Rocella princeps (Jouse) Fenner comb. nov.

Reinvestigation of the Odderade Interstadial in its type locality led to an augmentation of the flora list and correction of some misinterpretations (e.g. Omorica, Frangula). The Eemian, stadials FW 1 and 3, and the interstadials Amersfoort/Broerup and Odderade have been manifested by pollen analyses. FW 1 and FW 3 are probably not completely free from forested areas. The new pollen diagrams considered with older data from Odderade, and in comparison with other regions in Central Europe, fit essentially with the classification and development of Vegetation during the Early Weichselian in Oerel by Behre & Lade (1986).

A planktonic foraminiferal zonal scheme is presented for subdivision of the Upper Cretaceous pelagic carbonate sequence from southern mid-high latitudes. Definition of the zones is based on first and last occurrences of planktonic foraminifera from Ocean Drilling Program Holes 762C and 763B (Leg 122; Exmouth Plateau, south Indian Ocean). During the Late Cretaceous the studied holes were located close to 50°S and for the first time a complete sedimentary record for the mid-high latitudes was obtained. A detailed biostratigraphic analysis has allowed recognition of two new zones (Falsotruncana maslakovae Zone and Marginotruncana marianosi Zone) for the interval extending from the last occurrence of Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica to the first occurrence of Dicarinella asymetrica (upper Turonian - lower Santonian). From this study it is apparent that some low latitude (Globotruncana ventricosa, Hedbergella flandrini, Marginotruncana marianosi) and high latitude (Globigerinelloides impensus and Hedbergella sliteri) marker taxa display a vertical distribution at mid-high latitudes which is different from that known from low latitudes; moreover, one species (Heterohelix papula), overlooked at low latitudes, exhibits a restricted range that seems to be useful for chrono-biostratigraphic correlations: its appearance is suggested to coincide with the Coniacian/Santonian boundary. The proposed biozonation, which is integrated with calcareous nannofossil and magnetostratigraphic data available for the sections studied, is compared with both the low-latitude standard zonation and the planktonic foraminiferal zonal scheme for the circum-Antarctic region, in order to define a bio-chronostratigraphic scale that is useful for mid-high latitudes of the southern oceans.

The present work is based on mineralogical studies of sand and silt layers from a number of Deep Sea Drilling Project sites in the Indian Ocean belonging to different physiographic provinces of different ages. The minerals can be grouped into two major associations: a hornblende-opaque association with varying amounts of pyroxene, garnet, epidote, zircon, etc. and a biotite-chlorite-muscovite assemblage. The dominance of unstable minerals indicates a first generation, though evidence of reworking is reflected in the zircon and tourmaline grains at some sites. A large variety of minerals at some sites indicates a complex source. The mineral composition is nearly homogeneous at different sites for the entire length of the core, indicating that they have been derived from the same source during the deposition of that interval. However, the provenance changed by tectonic activity, the effect of which has been reflected in the mineralogy of some sites. An attempt was made to describe the mineralogic characteristics and their tectonic interpretations in the Pliocene and Miocene periods in the Ganges and Indus fan sites and also in the Wharton and Mozambique basin sites. Similar attempts could not be made for other ages in other physiographic provinces as the numbers of samples were too few. Within the limited scope, some idea about the mineralogical character of different basins and different physiographic provinces can be obtained from the present study. Mineralogical evidence also suggests very long transport of sediments in the deep sea. Regional variation of mineralogy has resulted due to source, sea-floor configuration, selective removal, reworking by different agencies and the processes operating in the ocean. There is no relation between a particular age and a set mineral assemblage for the Cenozoic sediments of the Indian Ocean.

A palynological investigation of a Holocene profile from Lake Voulkaria, western Greece, was carried out as a contribution to the environmental history of the coastal area of northwestern Acarnania and the Classical city of Palairos. It shows that deciduous oaks dominated the natural vegetation of the area throughout the Holocene. Until ca. 7000 B.C. Pistacia occurred abundantly, while other evergreen woody taxa were rare. At ca. 6300 B.C. an expansion of Carpinus orientalis/Ostrya can be observed. Around ca. 5300 B.C. spreading of Erica indicates a change to a drier climate and/or first human impact. Since ca. 3500 B.C. an increase of evergreen shrubs now clearly indicates land-use. The foundation of the Classical city of Palairos led to a temporary expansion of Phillyrea maquis. Within this period, molluscs of brackish water indicate the use of the lake as a harbour after the construction of a connection to the sea. The deciduous Quercus woodland recovered when human impact decreased in the area, and lasted until modern times.

Well-developed Campanian to Maestrichtian pelagic cyclic sediments were recovered from Hole 762C on the Exmouth Plateau, off northwest Australia, during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 122. The cycles consist of nannofossil chalk (light beds) and clayey nannofossil chalk (dark beds). Both light and dark beds are strongly to moderately bioturbated, alternate on a decimeter scale, and exhibit gradual boundaries. Bioturbation introduces materials from a bed of one color into an underlying bed of another color, indicating that diagenesis is not responsible for the cyclicity. Differences in composition between the light and dark beds, revealed by calcium carbonate measurement and X-ray diffraction analysis, together with trace fossil evidence, indicate that the cycles in the sediments are a depositional feature. Diagenetic processes may have intensified the appearance of the cycles. Spectral analysis was applied to the upper Campanian to lower Maestrichtian cyclic sediments to examine the regularity of the cycles. Power spectra were calculated from time series using Walsh spectral analysis. The most predominant wavelengths of the color cycles are 34-41 cm and 71-84 cm. With an average sedimentation rate of 1.82 cm/k.y. in this interval, we found the time durations of the cycles to be around 41 k.y. and 21 k.y., respectively, comparable to the obliquity and precession periods of the Earth's rotation, which strongly suggests an orbital origin for the cycles. On the basis of sedimentological evidence and plate tectonic reconstruction, we propose the following mechanism for the formation of the cyclic sediments from Hole 762C. During the Late Cretaceous, when there was no large-scale continental glaciation, the cyclic variations in insolation, in response to cyclic orbital changes, controlled the alternation of two prevailing climates in the area. During the wetter, equable, and warmer climatic phases under high insolation, more clay minerals and other terrestrial materials were produced on land and supplied by higher runoff to a low bioproductivity ocean, and the dark clayey beds were deposited. During the drier and colder climatic phases under low insolation, fewer clay minerals were produced and put into the ocean, where bioproductivity was increased and the light beds were deposited.

Results of a preliminary study of Early Cretaceous dinocyst assemblages from Site 765 on the Argo Abyssal Plain, off northwestern Australia, are presented. The palynological sequence is interpreted in terms of Australian zones and is, in descending order, the late Aptian Diconodinium davidii Zone (Cores 123-765C-33R to -39R), the middle to early Aptian Odontochitina operculata Zone (Cores 123-765C-40R to -49R), the Barremian Muderongia australis Zone (Cores 123-765C-50R to -54R), and the Berriasian lower Batioladinium reticulatum Zone (Core 123-765C-59R). The dating of the sequence as late Aptian to Berriasian on the basis of dinocysts is supported, in part, by data concerning associated foraminiferal, radiolarian, and calcareous nannofossil suites.

The remote South Sandwich arc is an archipelago of small volcanic islands and seamounts entirely surrounded by deep water and about 600 km away from the closest island, South Georgia. As some of the youngest islands (< 5 m.y.) in the Southern Ocean they are ideal for studying colonization processes of the seabed by benthic fauna, but are rarely investigated because of remoteness and extreme weather. The current study attempted to quantify the richness and abundance of the epibenthic macrofauna around the Southern Thule group by taking five epibenthic sledge samples along a depth transect including three shelf (one at 300 m and two at 500 m) and two slope stations (1000 and 1500 m). Our aim was to investigate higher taxon richness and community composition in an isolated Antarctic locality, since recent volcanic eruptions between 1964 and 1997. We examined patterns across all epibenthic macrofauna at phylum and class levels, and investigated trends in some model groups of crustaceans to order and family level. We found that abundance was highest in the shallowest sample and decreased with depth. Shelf samples (300 and 500 m) were dominated by molluscs and malacostracans while at the deeper stations (1000 and 1500 m) nematodes were the most abundant taxon. Surprisingly, the shallow shelf was dominated by animals with restricted dispersal abilities, such as direct developing brooders (malacostracans) or those with lecithotrophic larvae (bivalves of the genus Yoldiella, most bryozoan species). Despite Southern Thule's geological youth, recent eruptions, and its remoteness the shallow shelf was rich in higher taxa (phyla/classes) as well as orders and families of our model groups. Future work at higher taxonomic resolution (species level) should greatly increase understanding of how life has reached and established on these young and highly disturbed seabeds.

Palynological investigations of sediments from northern Bavaria (Rhön, Grabfeld, Lange Berge) reveal the Late Glacial and Postglacial history of the regional vegetation. The older sedirnents were found in the Rhön (Schwarzes Moor) and date back into the Bölling Period. At the end of that period pine spread into the Grabfeld. In both areas Lacher Tuff has been found. A radiocarbon date of 10,300 BP was found for the Late Glacial - Postglacial transition and one of 9300 BP for the Preboreal - Boreal transition. Hazel reached its highest values in the Rhön around 7,400 BP. During the Atlanticum a deciduous mixed oak forest covered the Rhön and Grabfeld regions. Beech dominated since the Subatlanticum. In the Lange Berge region, however, a mixed forest with Fagus, Picea, Pinus and Abies developed. In the Rhön first anthropogenic influence was found during the Latene Period. The boundary between zone IX and X has been dated at 820 A.D., and the start of extensive forest clearances at 1000 A. D. A culmination of landuse was found for the Medieval Period. At the end of that period however the Rhön was deserted. New forest clearances started around 1500 A.D., but were interrupted by the 'Thirty Years War'. Afterwards the Rhön got its present appearance.
