The basement at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 677 and 678 originated from the Galapagos spreading center of the Costa Rica Rift and has moved about 200 km over the last 6 m.y. (Fig. 1) (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1987, 1988; Scientific Drilling Party, 1987). Sediments about 300 m thick cover basement so young that basal sediments at Sites 677 and 678 have been reheated up to 60?-70?C at Site 677 and altered to limestone and/or chert (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). Sediments from both sites indicate (1) a high sedimentation rate (about 48 m/m.y.) and (2) biogenic silica and carbonate as the main constituents of sediments (Table 1) (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). Heatflow observations and measurements of interstitial water chemistry around the sites show that Site 677 is in a lower heatflow zone (166 mW/m**2; 1°12.14'N, 83°44.22'W) whereas Site 678 is located in a zone of higher heat flow (250 mW/m**2; 1°13.01'N, 83°43.39'W) (Langseth et al., 1988; Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). In the flank hydrothermal systems, circulating solution is moving upward through the sedimentary column in zones of higher heat flow while it is moving downward in zones of lower heat flow (Anderson and Skilbeck, 1981). The chemistry of the interstitial waters is modified by several processes such as (1) diagenetic reactions and (2) advective and (3) diffusive transports of dissolved constituents. Analyses of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in interstitial waters from Sites 677 and 678 show that their profiles are mainly controlled by advective transport (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). In contrast, the interstitial-water profiles for NH4+, Si, and PO4[3-] are highly affected by reactions in the sediments. Site 677 offers a good opportunity to investigate amino acids in the interstitial waters because sediments of similar compositions have been deposited at constant rates of sedimentation. There are few previous works on amino acid distributions in interstitial waters (Henrichs and Parrington, 1979; Michaelis et al., 1982; Henrichs et al., 1984; Henrichs and Farrington, 1987; Ishizuka et al., 1988). In this chapter, we report (1) Rock-Eval analysis and (2) the composition of total hydrolyzable and dissolved free amino acids (THAA and DFAA, respectively) in the interstitial waters. Our objectives are to discuss (1) the possible origin of organic materials, (2) the characteristics of THAA and DFAA, and (3) their relationships in interstitial waters.

Boron and chlorine were determined in rain water and in atmospheric moisture condensed in a "Saratov" refrigerator. Ocean is the main source of boron on the earth surface. Boron evaporates from the ocean and enriches atmospheric precipitation: B/Cl ratio of ocean water (0.00024) increases by factor of 10-15. Assuming that the average Cl content in global river runoff is 7.8 mg/l and boron content 0.013 mgl, B/Cl ratio in this runoff is 0.0017. The average B/Cl ratio in rain water of the Golubaya (Blue) Bay (Gelendzhik, Black Sea region) is 0.0026 and in condensates of atmospheric moisture during onshore and offshore winds in the same region it averages from 0.0029 to 0.0033. The maximum boron content in the condensates of this region during onshore winds was 0.032 mg/l and the minimum during offshore winds, 0.004 mg/l. /Cl ratio in sea water over the Atlantic Ocean and in the Gelendzhik area of the Black Sea varied within narrow range, mostly from 0.0025 to 0.0035. Similar B/Cl ratio (0.0024) was found for atmospheric precipitation on the slope of the Terskei Ala-Tau near the Issyk-Kul Lake in 1969. Thus, although chemistries of boron and chlorine (in chlorides) are very different, the B/Cl ratio in the atmosphere is fairly constant. This can be taken as a confirmation of an assumption that salt composition of sea water passes into the atmosphere in molecularly dispersed state. Supposing that the ocean-atmosphere system is in equilibrium as regards to the boron budget, it can be assumed that the same amount of boron passes from the ocean into bottom sediments and from lithosphere rocks and soils into the hydrosphere.

Corvio sandstone is a ~20 m thick unit (Corvio Formation) that appears in the top section of the Frontada Formation (Campoó Group; Lower Cretaceous) located in Northern Spain in the southern margin of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin. Up to 228 plugs were cored from four 0.3 x 0.2 x 0.5 m blocks of Corvio sandstone, to perform a comprehensive characterization of the physical, mineralogical, geomechanical, geophysical and hydrodynamic properties of this geological formation, and the anisotropic assessment of the most relevant parameters. Here we present the first data set obtained on 53 plugs which covers (i) basic physical and chemical properties including density, porosity, specific surface area and elementary analysis (XRF - CHNS); (ii) the curves obtained during unconfined and confined strengths tests, the tensile strengths, the calculated static elastic moduli and the characteristic stress levels describing the brittle behaviour of the rock; (iii) P- and S-wave velocities (and dynamic elastic moduli) and their respective attenuation factors Qp and Qs, electrical resistivity for a wide range of confining stress; and (iv) permeability and transport tracer tests. Furthermore, the geophysical, permeability and transport tests were additionally performed along the three main orthogonal directions of the original blocks, in order to complete a preliminary anisotropic assessment of the Corvio sandstone.

Bedforms such as dunes and ripples are ubiquitous in rivers and coastal seas, and commonly described as triangular shapes from which height and length are calculated to estimate hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic parameters. Natural bedforms, however, present a far more complicated morphology; the difference between natural bedform shape and the often assumed triangular shape is usually neglected, and how this may affect the flow is unknown. This study investigates the shapes of natural bedforms and how they influence flow and shear stress, based on four datasets extracted from earlier studies on two rivers (the Rio Paraná in Argentina, and the Lower Rhine in The Netherlands). The most commonly occurring morphological elements are a sinusoidal stoss side made of one segment and a lee side made of two segments, a gently sloping upper lee side and a relatively steep (6 to 21°) slip face. A non-hydrostatic numerical model, set up using Delft3D, served to simulate the flow over fixed bedforms with various morphologies derived from the identified morphological elements. Both shear stress and turbulence increase with increasing slip face angle and are only marginally affected by the dimensions and positions of the upper and lower lee side. The average slip face angle determined from the bed profiles is 14°, over which there is no permanent flow separation. Shear stress and turbulence above natural bedforms are higher than above a flat bed but much lower than over the often assumed 30° lee side angle.

Sedimentary proxies used to reconstruct marine productivity suffer from variable preservation and are sensitive to factors other than productivity. Therefore, proxy calibration is warranted. Here we map the spatial patterns of two paleoproductivity proxies, biogenic opal and barium fluxes, from a set of core-top sediments recovered in the Subarctic North Pacific. Comparisons of the proxy data with independent estimates of primary and export production, surface water macronutrient concentrations and biological pCO2 drawdown indicate that neither proxy shows a significant correlation with primary or export productivity for the entire region. Biogenic opal fluxes, when corrected for preservation using 230Th-normalized accumulation rates, show a good correlation with primary productivity along the volcanic arcs (tau = 0.71, p = 0.0024) and with export productivity throughout the western Subarctic North Pacific (tau = 0.71, p = 0.0107). Moderate and good correlations of biogenic barium flux with export production (tau = 0.57, p = 0.0022) and with surface water silicate concentrations (tau = 0.70, p = 0.0002) are observed for the central and eastern Subarctic North Pacific. For reasons unknown, however, no correlation is found in the western Subarctic North Pacific between biogenic barium flux and the reference data. Nonetheless, we show that barite saturation, uncertainty in the lithogenic barium corrections and problems with the reference datasets are not responsible for the lack of a significant correlation between biogenic barium flux and the reference data. Further studies evaluating the factors controlling the variability of the biogenic constituents in the sediments are desirable in this region.
