The occurrence of Quaternary and Oligocene silicoflagellates at two Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 119 Holes (736A and 744A) on the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean was investigated to compare species distributions to Northern Hemisphere floras. This abstract gives the data determined (Tables 1 and 2) for 24 samples and few preliminary remarks. Quaternary assemblages of Hole 736A are noteworthy for the absences of key North Pacific zonal guide species such as Bachmannocena quadrangula, Dictyocha aculeata, Dictyocha subarctios, and Distephanus octangulatus (Bukry and Monechi, 1985). Other species such as Distephanus floridus, Distephanus speculum elongatus, and Mesocena octagona show limited ranges in Hole 736A and may help to subdivide the Quaternary locally. The late Oligocene assemblages of Hole 744A contain widely distributed species of Distephanus and Naviculopsis, which permit correlation to lower latitude assemblages. They also contain the high-latitude acme of Distephanus raupii which was first noted at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Hole 278 (56°3.42'S, 160°04.29'E, water depth 3689 m) by Perch-Nielsen (1975) and Bukry (1975). Study of Hole 744A assemblages suggests that D. raupii developed from pentagonal Dictyocha deflandrei deflandrei. A final note on the Hole 744A assemblages is the brief late Oligocene acme (25%) of Dictyocha sp. aff. D. spinosa in Sample 119-744A-13H-4, 65-67 cm, which provides a direct correlation to the acme (16%) in DSDP Sample 29-278-31R-CC (Perch-Nielsen, 1975) in the Southern Ocean. Most of the taxonomy used in the tables is documented in earlier publications of the DSDP Initial Reports (see Bukry in Volumes 16, 35, 37, 40, 44, 49, 54, 67, 68, 69, 81, and 95). Also, see Loeblich et al. (1968) and Perch-Nielsen (1985) for extensive taxonomy and illustrations.

Study sites. Samples of surface water were taken from 4 coastal lagoons on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico: Celestun (20° 45' N - 90° 22' W), Chelem (21° 15' N - 89° 45' W), Rosada Lagoon (21º 19' N - 89º 19' W), and Sabancuy Estuary (18° 58' N - 91° 12' W). The sampling was performed from august to October of 2011 (Chelem 08/24; Laguna Rosada 09/06; Celestún 09/28; Sabancuy 10/25). The sampling was random without replacement and 10 samples of surface water were collected along a transect parallel to the coastal axis. Samples were deposited in sterile plastic bottles and conserved in refrigeration at 4°C. All samples were processed within 24 hours after sampling. According to the Mexican laws and regulations no permissions are required to obtain water and sediment samples from open public areas. Analysis of environmental and physicochemical parameters. Determinations of the environmental parameters were performed with a Hach 5465000 model 156 multi-parameter measuring instrument. The Lorenzen method was used to determine chlorophyll-a (21) with 90% acetone and the concentration was calculated according to the formula: Chla= 27.63 (OD665o - OD665a)(VA)/VM x L Where, OD665o: absorbance at 665 nm before acidification; OD665a: absorbance at 665 nm after acidification; VA: volume (ml) of acetone for extraction; VM: volume (ml) of filtered water; L: length (cm) of the photometric cell. Determinations of the physicochemical parameters (silicates, phosphates, nitrates, nitrites and ammonia) were performed using the spectrophotometric techniques described and modified by Strickland and Parsons (1972).

The Oligocene to Pliocene section from Hole 628A supplied about 100 species of Tertiary ostracodes. Deep-sea psychrospheric? species (Bradleya cf. dictyon, Agrenocythere cf. gosnoldia, Cardobairdia spp., Henryhowella sp., Cytheropteron spp., etc.) are present throughout the section. Starting in the Miocene, neritic species (Hulingsina sp., Puriana spp., Caudites spp., Loxoconcha fischeri, Cytherelloidea sp., etc.) dominate. Redeposition of these species from the continental shelf seems to be penecontemporaneous with sedimentation. Variations in the assemblages indicate biostratigraphic position. Species having an ecologic or stratigraphic importance are discussed and illustrated.

Remains of diatoms, molluscs, ostracods, foraminifera and pollen exines preserved in the sediments of Lago d'Averno, a volcanic lake in the Phlegrean Fields west of Naples, allowed us to reconstruct the changes in the ecological conditions of the lake and of the vegetation around it for the period from 800 BC to 800 AD. Lago d'Averno was at first a freshwater lake, temporarily influenced by volcanic springs. Salinity increased slowly during Greek times as a result of subsidence of the surrounding land. Saline conditions developed only after the lake was connected with the sea by a canal, when Portus Julius was built in 37 BC. The first post-Roman period of uplift ended with a short freshwater phase during the 7th century after Christ. Deciduous oakwoods around the lake was transformed into a forest of evergreen oaks in Greek times and thrived there - apparently almost uninfluenced by man - until it was felled, when the Avernus was incorporated into the new Roman harbour in 37 BC, to construct a shipyard and other military buildings there. Land-use was never more intense than during Roman times and weakest in Greek and Early Roman times, when the Avernus was considered a holy place, the entrance to the underworld.

Groundwater is routinely analyzed for fecal indicators but direct comparisons of fecal indicators to the presence of bacterial and viral pathogens are rare. This study was conducted in rural Bangladesh where the human population density is high, sanitation is poor, and groundwater pumped from shallow tubewells is often contaminated with fecal bacteria. Five indicator microorganisms (E. coli, total coliform, F+RNA coliphage, Bacteroides and human-associated Bacteroides (HuBacteroides)) and various environmental parameters were compared to the direct detection of waterborne pathogens by quantitative PCR in groundwater pumped from 50 tubewells. Rotavirus was detected in groundwater filtrate from the largest proportion of tubewells (40%), followed by Shigella (10%), Vibrio (10%), and pathogenic E. coli (8%). Spearman rank correlations and sensitivity-specificity calculations indicate that some, but not all, combinations of indicators and environmental parameters can predict the presence of pathogens. Culture-dependent fecal indicator bacteria measured on a single date did not predict bacterial pathogens, but annually averaged monthly measurements of culturable E. coli did improve prediction for total bacterial pathogens. F+RNA coliphage were neither correlated nor sufficiently sensitive towards rotavirus, but were predictive of bacterial pathogens. A qPCR-based E. coli assay was the best indicator for the bacterial pathogens, rotavirus and all pathogens combined. Since groundwater cannot be excluded as a significant source of diarrheal disease in Bangladesh and neighboring countries with similar characteristics, the need to develop more effective methods for screening tubewells with respect to microbial contamination is necessary.
