Biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental history of deep and surficial waters of the Japan Sea are addressed using sequences recovered from the floor of the backarc basin. The study is divided into two parts: (1) foraminifer biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental assessment of sedimentary sequences recovered from above igneous basement at the four sites and (2) detailed planktonic foraminifer paleoenvironmental analysis of Quaternary and Pliocene sequences from Sites 794 and 797 in the Yamato Basin. A total of 253 samples were examined for the foraminifer biostratigraphy and 325 samples for the detailed paleoenvironmental study of Quaternary and Pliocene sequences. Low abundance and sporadic occurrence of foraminifers limited interpretation of results. Foraminifer-bearing intervals were correlated where possible to diatom and calcareous nannofossil zonations, and the sequences were successfully assigned to the foraminifer zonation of Matsunaga. Unfortunately, extensive barren intervals and sporadic occurrences of planktonic foraminifers prevented zonation of Quaternary and Pliocene intervals, although some interesting conclusions about paleoenvironment were possible and are listed below. A sequence of Neogene (sensu lato) paleoenvironmental events were identified: (1) deepening of the Yamato basins to middle bathyal depths by the early to middle Miocene, an event contemporaneous with the age of some deep basins known from uplifted sections adjacent to the Japan Basin; (2) cooling of the Japan Sea in the early middle Miocene; (3) oxygenation of deep waters in the late Miocene; (4) further cooling of surficial water masses between the Olduvai Subchron and the Brunhes/Matuyama Boundary; and (5) extermination of lower middle bathyal faunas and replacement by upper middle bathyal faunas near the base of the Quaternary.

Shipboard investigation of magnetostratigraphy and shore-based investigation of diatoms and calcareous nannofossils were used to identify datum events in sedimentary successions collected at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 201 Site 1225. The goal was to extend the magnetic record previously studied at the same site, ODP Leg 138 Site 851, and provide a comprehensive age model for Site 1225. Two high-magnetic intensity zones at 0-70 and 200-255 meters below seafloor (mbsf) were correlated with lithologic Subunits IA and IC in Hole 1225A. Subunit IA (0-70 mbsf) contains the magnetic reversal record until the Cochiti Subchronozone (3.8 Ma) and has a sedimentation rate of 1.7 cm/k.y. This agrees with previous work done at Site 851. Subunit IC (200-255 mbsf) was not sampled at Site 851. Diatom and nannofossil biostratigraphy constrained this subunit, and we found it to contain the magnetic reversal record between Subchrons C4n.2r and C5n.2n (8.6-9.7 Ma), yielding a sedimentation rate of 2.7 cm/k.y. Biostratigraphy was used to establish the sedimentation rates within Subunits IB and ID (70-200 mbsf and 255-300 mbsf, respectively). These subunits had higher sedimentation rates (~3.4 cm/k.y.) and coincide with the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom event (4.5-7 Ma) and the Miocene global cooling trend (10-15 Ma). High biogenic productivity associated with these subunits resulted in the pyritization of the magnetic signal. In lithologic Subunit ID, basement flow is another factor that may be altering the magnetic signal; however, the good correlation between the biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy indicates that the magnetic record was locked-in near the seafloor and suggests the age model is robust.

Two of five holes drilled at two separate sites during Leg 123 of the Ocean Drilling Program intersected thick and relatively complete sections of Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene nannofossiliferous sediments. Although dominated by turbidite deposition in the upper part, Hole 765C contains a thick and relatively complete Albian-Oligocene section, including a particularly thick Aptian interval, with abundant and fairly well-preserved nannofossils. Several unconformities are confidently interpreted in this section that span much of the Santonian, late Campanian, Maestrichtian, late Eocene, and early Oligocene. Hole 766A contains a thick and relatively complete Albian-lower Eocene section having generally abundant and well-preserved nannofossils. Several unconformities also have been identified in this section that span much of the Coniacian, early Campanian, Maestrichtian, and late Eocene through early Pliocene. The chronostratigraphic position and length of all these unconformities may have considerable significance for reconstructing the sedimentary history and for interpreting the paleoceanography of this region. A particularly thick section of upper Paleocene-lower Eocene sediments, including a complete record across the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, also was cored in Hole 766A that contains abundant and diverse nannofossil assemblages. Although assemblages from this section were correlated successfully using a standard low-latitude zonation, difficulties were encountered that reduced biostratigraphic resolution. Several lines of evidence suggest a mid-latitude position for Site 766 during this time, including (1) high assemblage diversity characteristic of mid-latitude zones of upwelling and (2) absence of certain ecologically controlled markers found only in low latitudes.

Upper Quaternary calcareous nannofossils contained in drill cores taken in the heavily sedimented Middle Valley of the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge in the northeast Pacific Ocean (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139) are investigated. The host sediments have been subjected at depth to high temperatures and hot hydrothermal fluids that have altered or destroyed in part or in toto the nannofossil assemblages, thereby raising at several sites the level of the first (deepest) stratigraphic occurrence of nannofossils or of the important Emiliania huxleyi datum. The degree of alteration of the nannofossil assemblages is dependent on the intensity of the hydrothermal activity, which is indicated by paleotemperatures derived independently from studies of color alteration of palynomorphs and by vitrinite reflectance (Mao et al., this volume). State of preservation and the downhole level at which assemblages have been destroyed correlate well with the inferred paleotemperature estimates. Destruction of the assemblages appears to be species selective and follows in general the dissolution rankings determined independently by others for Recent nannofossils of the Pacific basin. More systematic correlation of these phenomena is hampered, however, by the fact that nannofossil preservation is already quite variable at the time of deposition because of the predominance of turbidite activity in the study area.

Twenty routinely used nannofossil datums in the late Neogene and Quaternary were identified at three Blake Ridge sites drilled during Leg 164. The quantitative investigation of the nannofossil assemblages in 236 samples selected from Hole 994C provide new biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic information. Although mostly overlooked previously, Umbilicosphaera aequiscutum is an abundant component of the late Neogene flora, and its last occurrence at ~2.3 Ma is a useful new biostratigraphic event. Small Gephyrocapsa evolved within the upper part of Subzone CN11a (~4.3 Ma), and after an initial acme, it temporarily disappeared for 400 k.y., between 2.9 and 2.5 Ma. Medium-sized Gephyrocapsa evolved in the latest Pliocene ~2.2 Ma), and after two short temporary disappearances, common specimens occurred continuously just above the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary. The base of Subzone CN13b should be recognized as the beginning of the continuous occurrence of medium-sized (>4 µm) Gephyrocapsa. Stratigraphic variation in abundance of the very small placoliths and Florisphaera profunda alternated, indicating potential of the former as a proxy for the paleoproductivity. At this site, it is likely that upwelling took place during three time periods in the late Neogene (6.0-4.6 Ma, 2.3-2.1 Ma, and 2.0-1.8 Ma) and also in the early Pleistocene (1.4-0.9 Ma). Weak upwelling is also likely to have occurred intermittently through the late Pliocene. Due to the sharp and abrupt turnover of the nannofossils, which resulted from an evolution of very competitive species, the paleoproductivity of the late Pleistocene is not clear. The site was mostly in an oligotrophic central gyre setting during the 4.6- to 2.3-Ma interval, intermittently between 2.1 and 1.4 Ma, and continuously for the last several tens of thousand years.

Radiolaria are present in frequencies ranging from rare to abundant and with generally moderate to good preservation quality in Leg 104 sediments younger than 22 Ma. Preservation degrades in progressively younger sediments, and upper Pliocene to mid-Pleistocene radiolaria were found only at Site 644, where sporadic assemblages of moderate to poorly preserved specimens persist to approximately 0.75 Ma. Radiolaria are essentially absent in Leg 104 recovery older than basal Miocene. The stratigraphic ranges of 55 taxa of radiolaria are documented in 451 samples from the biosiliceous recoveries of Holes 642B, 642C, 642D, 643A, and 644A. The stratigraphic ranges of 25 of these species are used as boundary criteria for a new system of 28 Neogene zones and subzones that are used to characterize approximately 72% of the past 22 m.y. of sedimentation on the Vriring Plateau. This new scheme is intended to supercede the NRS zones provisionally proposed in the Leg 104 Initial Reports. The applicability of this regional biozonation beyond the Wring and Iceland Plateaus is not presently known. The radiolaria biostratigraphy serves as a basis for inferring a sequence of hiatuses and faunal overturns that may be associated with sea-level low stands and consequent cold-water isolation of the Norwegian Sea. Twenty-one new taxa are described as follows: Actinomma henningsmoeni, Actinomma livae, Actinomma mirabile, Actinomma plasticum, Ceratocyrtis broeggeri, Ceratocyrtis manumi, Ceratocyrtis stoermeri, Clathrospyris vogti, Corythospyris hispida, Corythospyris jubata sverdrupi, Corythospyris reuschi, Crytocapsella ampullacea, Cyrocapsella kladaros, Gondwanaria japonica kiaeri, Hexalonche esmarki, Larcospira bulbosa, Phormospyris thespios, Pseudodicytophimus amundseni, Spongotrochus vitabilis, Spongurus cauleti, and Tessarastrum thiedei.

A generally rich radiolarian fauna ranging in age from Quaternary to early Eocene (Zone RP7) was found at five of the eight sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199. Of particular interest are the stratigraphically complete assemblages that range in age from middle Miocene (Zone RN5) to early Eocene (Zone RP7), composites of Sites 1218, 1219, and 1220. At the same sites, multisensor track (MST) data show consistent cycles in gamma ray attenuation density, color, and carbonate content that can be correlated on a submeter scale from the early Miocene to early Eocene. In addition, the magnetic reversal records from these three sites allow construction of an absolute timescale. A series of 305 radiolarian morphologic first and last occurrences and evolutionary transitions for radiolarians were determined and correlated directly with the accompanying MST and paleomagnetic data, resulting in a detailed and accurate dating of events. Since many of the bioevents are found at more than one site, it was also possible to test their reliability within the study area. Twelve new species are described: Calocycletta (Calocycletta) anekathen, Dorcadospyris anastasis, Dorcadospyris copelata, Dorcadospyris cyclacantha, Dorcadospyris ombros, Dorcadospyris scambos, Eucyrtidium mitodes, Theocyrtis careotuberosa, Theocyrtis perpumila, Theocyrtis perysinos, Theocyrtis setanios, and Thyrsocyrtis (Pentalacorys) orthotenes.

Southern China, especially Yunnan, has undergone high tectonic activity caused by the uplift of Himalayan Mountains during the Neogene, which led to a fast changing palaeogeography. Previous study shows that Southern China has been influenced by the Asian Monsoon since at least the Early Miocene. However, it is yet not well understood how intense the Miocene monsoon system was. In the present study, 63 fossil floras of 16 localities from Southern China are compiled and evaluated for obtaining available information concerning floristic composition, stratigraphic age, sedimentology, etc. Based on such reliable information, selected mega- and micro-floras have been analysed with the coexistence approach to obtain quantitative palaeoclimate data. Visualization of climate results in maps shows a distinct spatial differentiation in Southern China during the Miocene. Higher seasonalities of temperature and precipitation occur in the north and south parts of Southern China, respectively. During the Miocene, most regions of Southern China and Europe were both warm and humid. Central Eurasia was likely to be an arid center, which gradually spread westward and eastward. Our data provide information about Miocene climate patterns in Southern China and about the evolution of these patterns throughout the Miocene, and is also crucial to unravel and understand the climatic signals of global cooling and tectonic uplift.

Continental rise Site 905 yielded upper Miocene and Pliocene uniform hemipelagic mud (a contourite) from approximately 215 to 540 meters below seafloor. The nannofossil biostratigraphy of this interval was reexamined using closely spaced samples from core interiors. Additionally, total nannofossil abundances and dominant species and species group abundances were determined to evaluate the potential of this section for extracting sequence stratigraphic information. The data indicate that the putative hiatuses at the end of the late Pliocene (Zones NN17 and NN18) and in the early Pliocene (Zones NN13 and NN14) probably are condensed intervals, but the base of the late Miocene is almost certainly marked by an unconformity. Judging from carbonate content and sedimentation rate both, nannofossil abundance may be governed by carbonate dissolution or by siliciclastic dilution. Consequently, condensed sections cannot be identified by the abundance of pelagic component in the sediment alone, as is possible in equivalent age Gulf of Mexico sediments. Where nannofossil preservation is adequate in consecutive samples, as in the early Pliocene and latest late Miocene, total nannofossil abundance fluctuates regularly and with a periodicity of less than 105 yr, which suggests that dilution of the pelagic component occurred with a frequency probably related to astronomical forcing.

Eocene-Oligocene radiolarians from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 699, 702, and 703, Leg 114 of the Subantarctic Atlantic were examined in order to extend the tripartite zonation for the recovered cores based on results of similar analysis of Leg 120 submarine sediments from the Indian Ocean. Correlation of the two oceans is made by examining 23 biohorizons and the three zones, Eucyrtidium spinosum, Axoprunum irregularis, and Lychnocanoma conica, in ascending stratigraphic order. One new species, Eucyrtidium nishimurae, is described.

Neogene stratigraphy of the tropical and subtropical Pacific on radiolaria is studied in the book. A detailed comparison of coeval systems from tropics and subtropics is given. A possibility of use of a uniform zonal scale in these areas is proved. Magnitude of changes of complexes on borders of Neogene zones is studied in detail. Six stages in development of radiolarians are identified in the tropics in Neogene. Stratigraphic levels, where the greatest changes of fauna occurred, are natural boundaries of these stages. 72 species of radiolarians (two of which are new) are described in the book.
