We present the first circum-East Antarctic chronology for the Holocene, based on 17 radiocarbon dates generated by the accelerator method. Marine sediments from around East Antarctica contain a consistent, high-resolution record of terrigenous (ice-proximal) and biogenic (open-marine) sedimentation during Holocene time. This record demonstrates that biogenic sedimentation beneath the open-marine environment on the continental shelf has been restricted to approximately the past 4 ka, whereas a period of terrigenous sedimentation related to grounding line advance of ice tongues and ice shelves took place between 7 and 4 ka. An earlier period of open-marine (biogenic sedimentation) conditions following the late Pleistocene glacial maximum is recognized from the Prydz Bay (Ocean Drilling Program) record between 10.7 and 7.3 ka. Clearly, the response of outlet systems along the periphery of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the mid-Holocene was expansion. This may have been a direct consequence of climate warming during an Antarctic 'Hypsithermal'. Temperature-accumulation relations for the Antarctic indicate that warming will cause a significant increase in accumulation rather than in ablation. Models that predict a positive mass balance (growth) of the Antarctic ice sheet under global warming are supported by the mid-Holocene data presented herein.

In colonial species, it is often assumed that locations in the center of the colony are of highest quality and provide highest breeding success. We tested this prediction, known as the "central-periphery model," in a King Penguin colony in the subantarctic Crozet Archipelago. Breeding activity and survival of 150 penguins, fitted with transponder tags, were monitored over an entire breeding season. Among these 150 birds, 50 bred on the slope at the upper periphery of the colony, where the rates of predation and parasitism by ticks were high. Fifty birds bred in the center of the colony, where rates of predation and tick parasitism were low, and 50 bred at the lower end of the colony, where the rate of tick parasitism was low but predation and flooding were important risks. We predicted that the center of the colony should provide the safest breeding place and consequently be characterized by the highest breeding success and be used by the highest-quality individuals. Yet we found that penguins breeding in the center of the colony had the same breeding success as those at both peripheral locations. In addition, penguins breeding on the upper slope had a higher survival rate than penguins breeding at the center or bottom of the slope and were likely of higher quality. Our study does not support the central-periphery model and emphasizes the complexity behind the relationships among breeding site, breeding success, and individual quality.

A number of regularities of ore element accumulation in iron-manganese nodules along the profile from the Tsugaru Strait to the Wake Atoll is identified in the paper. It is shown that the ore process is enhanced to the pelagic zone: in nodules content of ore material increases and content of mineral insoluble residue decreases from near-shore areas to central parts of the ocean. Diagenetic redistribution of the elements between host sediments and nodules resulting to enrichment of the latter increases from bottom sediments of the ocean periphery to fine grained pelagic muds. At absolute enrichment by Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Mo, W, Ti, Zr, and V (as compared to host sediments) nodules are relatively enriched in Mn group elements (Cu, Ni, Co, Mo, W) and consequently depleted in Fe group elements (Ti, V, Zr) in the direction from the periphery to the center of the ocean. The ratio of reactive forms of Fe and Mn in host sediments is a factor determining the ratio of Fe group and Mn group elements in nodules.
