Geochemical changes in organic matter of bottom sediments from the Mozambique Basin at the river-sea barrier from the mouths of the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers toward the pelagic zone are discussed. Changes in bitumen, hydrolyzable material, humic acids, amino acids, n-alkanes, and polycyclic aromatic compounds resulting from genetic and diagenetic factors are described. This information is significant for paleoceanology reconstructions and for knowing ways of organic matter transformation into fossil forms.

Hydrogen isotope values (dD) of sedimentary terrestrial leaf wax such as n-alkanes or n-acids have been used to map and understand past changes in rainfall amount in the tropics because dD of precipitation is commonly assumed as the first order controlling factor of leaf wax dD. Plant functional types and their photosynthetic pathways can also affect leaf wax dD but these biological effects are rarely taken into account in paleo studies relying on this rainfall proxy. To investigate how biological effects may influence dD values we here present a 37,000-year old record of dD and stable carbon isotopes (d13C) measured on four n-alkanes (n-C27, n-C29, n-C31, n-C33) from a marine sediment core collected off the Zambezi River mouth. Our paleo d13C records suggest that each individual n-alkanes had different C3/C4 proportional contributions. n-C29 was mostly derived from a C3 dicots (trees, shrubs and forbs) dominant vegetation throughout the entire record. In contrast, the longer chain n-C33 and n-C31 were mostly contributed by C4 grasses during the Glacial period but shifted to a mixture of C4 grasses and C3 dicots during the Holocene. Strong correlations between dD and d13C values of n-C33 (correlation coefficient R2 = 0.75, n = 58) and n-C31 (R2 = 0.48, n = 58) suggest that their dD values were strongly influenced by changes in the relative contributions of C3/C4 plant types in contrast to n-C29 (R2 = 0.07, n = 58). Within regions with variable C3/C4 input, we conclude that dD values of n-C29 are the most reliable and unbiased indicator for past changes in rainfall, and that dD and d13C values of n-C31 and n-C33 are sensitive to C3/C4 vegetation changes. Our results demonstrate that a robust interpretation of palaeohydrological data using n-alkane dD requires additional knowledge of regional vegetation changes from which nalkanes are synthesized, and that the combination of dD and d13C values of multiple n-alkanes can help to differentiate biological effects from those related to the hydrological cycle.

Basalts from DSDP Sites 248, 249, 250 and 251 in the southwestern Indian Ocean formed in a complex tectonic region affected by the separation of Africa and South America. The different ages and variable geochemical features of these DSDP basalts probably reflect this tectonic complexity. For example, Site 251 on the flanks of the Southwest Indian Ridge is represented by normal MORB which probably originated at the Southwest Indian Ridge. Site 250 in the Mozambique Basin includes an older incompatible- element enriched unit which may represent basalt associated with the Prince Edward Fracture Zone; the upper unit is normal MORB. Basalts at Site 248 also in the Mozambique Basin are geochemically very unlike MORB and have strong continental affinities; they are also comparable in age to some of the continental Karroo basalts. They appear to be related to a subcontinental mantle source or to contamination by continental basement associated with the tectonic elevation of the Mozambique Ridge. Basalts from Site 249 on the Mozambique Ridge are relatively weathered but appear to be normal MORB. Their age, location, and composition are consistent with their origin at an early Cretaceous rift which has been postulated to have separated the Falkland Plateau from the Mozambique Ridge.

At stations to 1530 m depth in the Mozambique Channel and on the Saya-de-Malha and Walters banks seston biomass 2 m above the bottom was lower than at 30 m. Above the Walters shoal this difference was 13.2 mg/m**3 and was not equal to zero for P < 0.001. These results contradict previous ideas of biomass increase in benthic layers. The most likely cause of the observed impoverishment of plankton may be predominant consumption of living zooplankton component of seston by bottom and near-bottom predators. In the area of the Walters shoal this consumption is estimated as being about 300 mg/m**2 per day. Animals inhabiting this area live mainly on plankton brought in by horizontal advection, so that existence of faunal assemblages even on shallow-water submarine elevations is supported not mainly by local photosynthesis, but by primary production of surrounding waters.

Lipid contents both in particulate matter and bottom sediments decreases with passage from the shelf toward the open ocean. Lipid concentration in particulate matter collected by a separator (Ls) decreases by a factor of 7 (from 7.05 to 0.95 % of dry matter), while in particulate matter collected on filters (Lf) it decreases by a factor of 13 (from 78 to 6 µg/l) in the vicinity of the Limpopo River and by a factor of 6 (from 74 to 13 µg/l) in the vicinity of the Zambezi River. Concentration of Lf also decreased with depth. In the upper sediment layers lipid concentration was 0.0028-0.039% of dry matter; all mud samples were richer in lipids, than sand samples. During sedimentogenesis there is an increase in proportion of lipids relative to other classes of organic matter, proportion of low-polarity compounds increases among the lipids, and proportion of hydrocarbons rises among these compounds. Sediments inherit composition of particulate matter to the greatest degree in the vicinity of river mouths.

Study of chemical composition of 26 samples collected at depths from 400 to 1400 m on vertex surfaces of the Southeast Indian Ridge, Mascarene Ridge, Madagascar Ridge, and Mozambique Ridge, as well as on the upper part of the Southeast Africa continental slope showed that the samples represent three groups of rocks: 1) low phosphate or phosphate-free ferromanganese rocks, 2) phosphate ferromanganese rocks 3) phosphorites and phosphatized limestones.
