This study reports the first crystal chemical database resulting from a detailed structural investigation of trioctahedral micas found in xenolithic ejecta produced during the AD 1631, 1872 and 1944 eruptions, three explosive episodes of recent volcanic period of Vesuvius volcano (Southern Italy). Three xenolith types were selected: metamorphic/metasomatic skarns, pyrometamorphic/hydrothermally altered nodules and mafic cumulates. They are related to different magma chemistry and effusive styles: from sub-plinian and most evolved (AD 1631 eruption) to violent strombolian with medium evolution degree (AD 1872 eruption) to vulcanian-effusive, least evolved (AD 1944 eruption) event, respectively. Both xenoliths and micas were investigated employing multiple techniques: the xenoliths were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and quantitative energy-dispersive microanalysis; the micas were studied by electron probe microanalysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The mica-bearing xenoliths show variable texture and mineralogical assemblage, clearly related to their different origin. Based on the major oxide chemistry, only one xenolithic sample falls in the skarn compositional field from the Somma-Vesuvius literature, some fall close to the skarns and cumulate fields, others plot close to the syenite/foidolite/essexite field. A subgroup of the selected ejecta does not fall or approach any of the compositional fields. Trace and rare earth element patterns show some petrological affinity between studied xenoliths and erupted magmas with typical Eu, Ta and Nb negative anomalies. Strongly depleted patterns were detected for the 1631 metamorphic/metasomatic skarns xenoliths. Three distinct mica groups were distinguished: 1) Mg-, Al-rich, low Ti-bearing, low to moderate F-bearing varieties (1631 xenolith), 2) Al-moderate, F- and Mg-rich, Ti-, Fe-poor varieties (1872 xenolith), and 3) Al-, Ti- and Fe-rich, F-poor phases (1944 xenolith). All the analysed mica crystals are 1M polytypes with the expected space group C2/m. Micas from xenoliths of the 1631 Vesuvius eruption are phlogopites characterized by a combination of low extent of oxy-type and variable extent OH-F-substitutions, as testified by the range of F concentration (from ~ 0.20 to 0.80 apfu). Micas from xenoliths of the 1872 Vesuvius eruption exhibit structural peculiarities typical of fluorophlogopites, i.e. OH-F-substitution is predominant. Micas from the xenolith of the 1944 Vesuvius eruption display features typical of oxy-substituted micas. The variability of the crystal chemical features of the studied micas are consistent with the remarkable variation of their host rocks. Micas from 1631 nodules are related to metasomatic, skarn-type environment, deriving from the metamorphosed wall-rocks hosting the magma reservoir. The fluorophlogopites from the 1872 xenoliths testify for strongly dehydrated environmental conditions compared to those of the 1631 and 1944 hosts. Finally, magma storage condition at depth, associated to a decreasing aH2O may have promoted major oxy-type substitutions in 1944 biotites.

A regional ocean general circulation model of the Mediterranean is used to study the climate of the Last Glacial Maximum. The atmospheric forcing for these simulations has been derived from simulations with an atmospheric general circulation model, which in turn was forced with surface conditions from a coarse resolution earth system model. The model is successful in reproducing the general patterns of reconstructed sea surface temperature anomalies with the strongest cooling in summer in the northwestern Mediterranean and weak cooling in the Levantine, although the model underestimates the extent of the summer cooling in the western Mediterranean. However, there is a strong vertical gradient associated with this pattern of summer cooling, which makes the comparison with reconstructions complicated. The exchange with the Atlantic is decreased to roughly one half of its present value, which can be explained by the shallower Strait of Gibraltar as a consequence of lower global sea level. This reduced exchange causes a strong increase of salinity in the Mediterranean in spite of reduced net evaporation.

We present in situ microelectrode measurements of sediment formation factor and porewater oxygen and pH from six stations in the North Atlantic varying in depth from 2159 to 5380 m. A numerical model of the oxygen data indicates that fluxes of oxygen to the sediments are as much as an order of magnitude higher than benthic chamber flux measurements previously reported in the same area. Model results require dissolution driven by metabolic CO2 production within the sediments to explain the pH data; even at the station with the most undersaturated bottom waters >60% of the calcite dissolution occurs in response to metabolic CO2. Aragonite dissolution alone cannot provide the observed buffering of porewater pH, even at the shallowest station. A sensitivity test of the model that accounts for uncertainties in the bottom water saturation state and the stoichiometry between oxygen consumption and CO2 production during respiration constrains the dissolution rate constant for calcite to between 3 and 30% day**-1, in agreement with earlier in situ determinations of the rate constant. Model results predict that over 35% of the calcium carbonate rain to these sediments dissolves at all stations, confirmed by sediment trap and CaCO3 accumulation data.

The Wurmian Glaciation of the Alpine Foreland has been reconstructed in different phases as a result of investigations in the Rhine-Bodan region as well as in the Linth area. The whole High Glacial is divided in four main phases: ice advance into the piedmont basins, building-up of the foreland glaciation, high stages and retreat into the inner Alps. This epoch took up perhaps less than 12,000 years. During the period of building, an average increase of ice thickness of about 12 cm per year was sufficient to form an extensive foreland glacier within 5000-7000 years. The snow lines of the stades of the piedmont glaciation as well as of the local glaciers are calculated. Snow lines at about 1500 m a.s.l. led to an inner alpine ice build-up and an advance of glaciers towards the piedmont basins. To produce the foreland ice sheet, low snow lines of 900-1000 m a.s.l. were necessary. An interstadial phase before the maximum glaciation is evidenced by sediment sequences and a 14C-date of 22,100 BP. The chronology of ice retreat after 18 ka BP is still uncertain.

Interpretation of ice-core records requires accurate knowledge of the past and present surface topography and stress-strain fields. The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) drilling site (0.0684° E and 75.0025° S, 2891.7 m) in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, is located in the immediate vicinity of a transient and splitting ice divide. A digital elevation model is determined from the combination of kinematic GPS measurements with the GLAS12 data sets from the ICESat satellite. Based on a network of stakes, surveyed with static GPS, the velocity field around the EDML drilling site is calculated. The annual mean velocity magnitude of 12 survey points amounts to 0.74 m/a. Flow directions mainly vary according to their distance from the ice divide. Surface strain rates are determined from a pentagon-shaped stake network with one center point, close to the drilling site. The strain field is characterised by along flow compression, lateral dilatation, and vertical layer thinning.

Optimum conditions were selected for chromatographic separation of model mixtures of C12-C40 n-alkanes. For one of samples of hydrothermal deposits extraction conditions of hydrocarbons were studied and a sample preparation procedure was selected. The procedure was proposed to determine n-alkanes in samples of hydrothermal deposits by means of gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Detection limit for n-alkanes was 3x10**-9 to 10**-8% depending on components. On the basis of the proposed procedure composition of n-alkanes was studied in samples of hydrothermal deposits collected at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Broken Spur, Lost City, and Rainbow hydrothermal fields). Analyses showed that samples contained C14-C35 n-alkanes. Concentrations of the n-alkanes were rather low and varied from 0.002 to 0.038 µg/g. Hypotheses concerning genesis of identified n-alkanes were offered.
