Samples from Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous sediments at Site 511 were analyzed for palynomorphs. Three palynological assemblages were identified: Upper Jurassic (presumably Tithonian), Neocomian-Aptian, and lower Albian. These were correlated to synchronous assemblages in Argentina, South Africa, and Australia and were compared with Jurassic palynoassemblages from Hole 330, Leg 36.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 103 recovered Lower Cretaceous sediments from the Galicia margin off the coast of Iberia. The high diversity and abundance of assemblages makes this excellent material for the study of Early Cretaceous calcareous nannofossils. With the exception of a hiatus between the upper Hauterivian and lower Barremian, nannofossil distributions form a continuous composite section from the lower Valanginian to lower Cenomanian sediments recovered at the four sites. The sedimentation history of this rifted continental margin is complex, and careful examination of the nannofossil content and lithology is necessary in order to obtain optimum biostratigraphic resolution. The Lower Cretaceous sequence consists of a lower Valanginian calpionellid marlstone overlain by terrigenous sandstone turbidites deposited in the Valanginian and Hauterivian during initial rifting of this part of the margin. Interbedded calcareous marl and claystone microturbidites overlie the sandstone turbidites. Rifting processes culminated in the late Aptian-early Albian, resulting in the deposition of a calcareous, clastic turbidite sequence. The subsequent deposition of dark carbonaceous claystones (black shales) represents the beginning of seafloor spreading, as the margin continued to subside to depths near or below the CCD. The diversity, abundance, and preservation of nannofossils within these varied lithologies differ, and an attempt to distinguish between near shore and open-marine assemblages is made. Genera used for this purpose include Nannoconus, Micrantholithus, Pickelhaube, and Lithraphidites. In this study, six new species and one new subspecies are described and documented. Ranges of other species are extended, and an attempt is made to clarify existing, yet poorly understood, taxonomic concepts. A technique in which a single specimen is viewed with both light and scanning electron microscopes was used extensively to aid in this task. In addition, further subdivisions of the Sissingh (1977) zonation are suggested in order to increase biostratigraphic resolution.

The present study describes quantitatively the macrozoobenthic community structure in intertidal of the Island Algodoal-Maiandeua in the Northern Brazilian state of Pará, which is part of a protected area since 1990. Samples of the epi-and endomacrobenthos of the unconsolidated substrate were collected in October 2012, using a PVC cylindrical corer with a surface area of 60 square centimeter at a depth of 30 cm, along three transects located perpendicular to the coastline, separated by intervals of 50 m. Collected material was sieved on a 1 mm mesh, specimens were fixed in 4% formaldehyde buffered with borax. In Tropical Benthic Ecology laboratory macroinvertebrates were washed with 70% alcohol and afterwards identified with a stereomicroscope and specific literature.

Detailed descriptions of in situ ?Valanginian to Albian Antarctic palynofloras are presented from Weddell Sea claystones with high percentages of organic matter ("black shales") and intercalated volcanic ash layers. The claystones were recovered from two sites (ODP Leg 113, Sites 692 and 693) on the continental margin of Dronning Maud Land. Palynological investigations of these Cretaceous sediments revealed a ?Valanginian-Hauterivian age for the Site 692 sediments and an Aptian-Albian age for Site 693. This paper is focused on the palynomorphs of Site 692. Miospores, dinoflagellate cysts, and acritarchs are listed and compared with early Cretaceous microfloras from the Antarctic Peninsula, Australia, and South America. The dinocyst assemblage of Site 692 seems to be very similar in composition to an assemblage from the South Shetlands (?Valanginian-Hauterivian-Barremian). It also agrees well with associations described from early Early Cretaceous sequences from the Perth Basin, southwestern Australia. According to the Australian miospore zonation schemes, the sporomorph flora from Site 692 belongs to the South Australian Foraminisporis wonthaggiensis Zone (early Valanginian to Hauterivian) or the lower part of the dinocyst Muderongia Superzone (Valanginian to Hauterivian).

Calcareous nannofossils were studied from Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments drilled in the western Pacific during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 129. Mesozoic sediments at Sites 800, 801, and 802 are dominated by volcaniclastic turbidites, claystones, porcellanites, and radiolarites. Pelagic limestones are limited to the middle Cretaceous, and a few calcareous claystones were recovered in the Upper Jurassic section at Site 801. We documented the distribution of nannofossils, their total abundance, preservation, and relative species abundance based on semiquantitative and qualitative studies. Preservation of the calcareous nannofloras is poor to moderate, and the total abundance fluctuates from rare to very abundant. Marker species proposed for the middle and Late Cretaceous were recognized, allowing the application of standard nannofossil biozonations. At Site 800 calcareous nannofloras are abundant and moderately preserved in the Aptian-Cenomanian, and nannofossil biostratigraphy constitutes the basic stratigraphic framework for this interval. Radiolarians are the most abundant and persistent group throughout the sequence drilled at Site 801. Long intervals are barren of nannofloras and assemblages are usually characterized by low abundance and poor preservation. Nannofossil biostratigraphy was applied to the upper Aptian-Cenomanian interval and a few marker species were recognized for the late Tithonian. At Site 802 Cretaceous biostratigraphy is mainly based on calcareous nannofossil biozones corroborated by radiolarian and palynomorph events in the late Aptian-Coniacian age interval. A hiatus was indicated between the Santonian and the late Campanian, and another is suspected in the interval between the Cenomanian and the Coniacian.

Late Aptian through middle Eocene nannofossil assemblages were recovered from a continuously cored section at Site 585. Poorly preserved assemblages of low diversity were observed in samples taken throughout both upper Aptian and/or lower Albian sandstone and mudstone and middle Cenomanian to lower Turonian claystone at the base of this section. A 70-m interval barren of nannofossils separates these poorly preserved assemblages from those recovered from an upper Campanian chalk farther uphole. This chalk marks the most significant change in carbonate deposition at this site, and deposition of interbedded zeolitic claystone and sediment of varied nannofossil content proceeded without major interruption until the early Paleocene (Fasciculithus tympaniformis Zone, CP4). A middle Eocene chalk (dated by nannofossils) unconformably overlies lower Paleocene sediment in both Holes 585 and 585A. Only a few interbeds of zeolitic claystone are present within 100 m of nannofossil-rich sediment above this unconformity. This entire interval is cautiously assigned to the Discoaster sublodoensis Zone (CP 12), which indicates a sedimentation rate almost an order of magnitude higher than expected from normal pelagic sedimentation. The most obvious feature of the assemblages examined from these cores is the amount of reworked material. Rare Nannoconus elongatus and Braarudosphaera sp. in several upper Campanian to middle Eocene samples demonstrate the contribution of pelagic material from upslope and, along with other reworked species throughout the Upper Cretaceous samples examined, provide evidence contradictory to an excursion of the calcium compensation depth to deep basinal settings in the western Pacific during the Campanian-Maestrichtian time (Thierstein, 1979). The overwhelming dominance of reworked species in all middle Eocene samples examined and the persistence of these assemblages throughout such a large thickness of sediment suggest that currents that redeposited material intensified at this time and may be associated with the formation of the lower Paleocene/middle Eocene unconformity at this site. A single surface core of calcareous ooze taken from Hole 585A dated as early Pleistocene contains abundant and well-preserved late Miocene and Pliocene species.
