The taxonomy of Antarctic fishes has been predominantly based on morphological characteristics rather than on genetic criteria. A typical example is the Notothenia group, which includes N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844, N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 and N. rossii Richardson, 1844. The Polymerase Chain Reaction and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique was used to determine whether N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 and N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 are different or whether they are the same species with morphological, physiological and behavioural variability. N. rossii was used as control. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was isolated from muscle specimens of N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844, N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 and N. rossii, which were collected in Admiralty Bay, King George Island. The DNA was used to amplify a fragment (690 base pairs) of the mitochondrial gene coding region of NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2. Further, the amplicon was digested with the following restriction enzymes: DdeI, HindIII and RsaI. The results showed a variation of the digestion pattern of the fragment amplified between N. rossii, and N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 or N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951. However, no differences were found between N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 and N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951, on the grounds of the same genetic pattern shown by the two fish.

Thecosome pteropods (pelagic mollusks) can play a key role in the food web of various marine ecosystems. They are a food source for zooplankton or higher predators such as fishes, whales and birds that is particularly important in high latitude areas. Since they harbor a highly soluble aragonitic shell, they could be very sensitive to ocean acidification driven by the increase of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The effect of changes in the seawater chemistry was investigated on Limacina helicina, a key species of Arctic pelagic ecosystems. Individuals were kept in the laboratory under controlled pCO2 levels of 280, 380, 550, 760 and 1020 µatm and at control (0°C) and elevated (4°C) temperatures. The respiration rate was unaffected by pCO2 at control temperature, but significantly increased as a function of the pCO2 level at elevated temperature. pCO2 had no effect on the gut clearance rate at either temperature. Precipitation of CaCO3, measured as the incorporation of 45Ca, significantly declined as a function of pCO2 at both temperatures. The decrease in calcium carbonate precipitation was highly correlated to the aragonite saturation state. Even though this study demonstrates that pteropods are able to precipitate calcium carbonate at low aragonite saturation state, the results support the current concern for the future of Arctic pteropods, as the production of their shell appears to be very sensitive to decreased pH. A decline of pteropod populations would likely cause dramatic changes to various pelagic ecosystems.

Analysis of pelagic clay samples from Sites 576, 578, and 581 shows that physical, acoustic, and electrical trends with increasing burial depth are related to mineralogical and diagenetic changes. The properties of interest are bulk density (roo), porosity (phi), compressional-wave velocity (Vp) and velocity anisotropy (Ap), and electrical resistivity (Ro) and resistivity anisotropy (Ar). In general, as demonstrated in particular for the brown pelagic clay, the increase in roo, Vp, Ro, and to a lesser extent Ap and Ar with increasing depth is primarily caused by decreasing phi (and water content) as a result of compaction. The mineralogy and chemistry of the pelagic clays vary as a function of burial depth at all three sites. These variations are interpreted to reflect changes in the relative importance of detrital and diagenetic components. Mineralogical and chemical variations, however, play minor roles in determining variations in acoustic and electrical properties of the clays with increasing burial depth.

Characterization of the diets of upper-trophic predators is a key ingredient in management including the development of ecosystem-based fishery management plans, conservation efforts for top predators, and ecological and economic modeling of predator prey interactions. The California Current Predator Diet Database (CCPDD) synthesizes data from published records of predator food habits over the past century. The database includes diet information for 100+ upper-trophic level predator species, based on over 200 published citations from the California Current region of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Baja, Mexico to Vancouver Island, Canada. We include diet data for all predators that consume forage species: seabirds, cetaceans, pinnipeds, bony and cartilaginous fishes, and a predatory invertebrate; data represent seven discrete geographic regions within the CCS (Canada, WA, OR, CA-n, CA-c, CA-s, Mexico). The database is organized around predator-prey links that represent an occurrence of a predator eating a prey or group of prey items. Here we present synthesized data for the occurrence of 32 forage species (see Table 2 in the affiliated paper) in the diet of pelagic predators (currently submitted to Ecological Informatics). Future versions of the shared-data will include diet information for all prey items consumed, not just the forage species of interest.

Drilling at Site 534 in the Blake-Bahama Basin recovered 268 m of Lower Cretaceous, Berriasian to Hauterivian, pelagic carbonates, together with volumetrically minor intercalations of claystone, black shales, and terrigenous and calcareous elastics. Radiolarian nannofossil pelagic carbonates accumulated in water depths of about 3300 to 3650 m, below the ACD (aragonite compensation depth) but close to the CCD (calcite compensation depth). Radiolarian abundance points to a relatively fertile ocean. In the Hauterivian and Barremian, during times of warm, humid climate and rising sea level, turbiditic influxes of both terrigenous and calcareous sediments, and minor debris flows were derived from the adjacent Blake Plateau. The claystones and black shales accumulated on the continental rise, then were redeposited onto the abyssal plain by turbidity currents. Dark organic-rich and pale organic-poor couplets are attributed to climatic variations on land, which controlled the input of terrigenous organic matter. Highly persistent, fine, parallel lamination in the pelagic chalks is explained by repeated algal "blooms." During early diagenesis, organic-poor carbonates remained oxygenated and were cemented early, whereas organic-rich intervals, devoid of burrowing organisms, continued to compact later in diagenesis. Interstitial dissolved-oxygen levels fluctuated repeatedly, but bottom waters were never static nor anoxic. The central western Atlantic in the Lower Cretaceous was thus a relatively fertile and wellmixed ocean basin.

In recent years, metalliferous sediments have been discovered overlying newly generated oceanic crust in the East Pacific, North Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and elsewhere (e.g., Boström, 1973; Lalou et al., 1977; Bischoff, 1969; Boström and Fisher, 1971; Cann et al., 1977, respectively). Such material has also been recovered by drilling from sediments lying upon older oceanic crust (Boström et al., 1972, 1976; Horowitz and Cronan, 1976). Hydrothermal circulation of seawater at a spreading ridge results in the leaching of Fe, Mn, and possibly other elements from the basaltic volcanic layer and their transport and discharge into ocean bottom waters, whereupon fine-grained Fe-Mn-rich precipitates form and settle into the ambient sediment (cf. Corliss, 1971; Dasch et al., 1971; Spooner and Fyfe, 1973; Bischoff and Dickson, 1975; Heath and Dymond, 1977; Corliss et al., 1979, Edmond et al., 1979). Mn-rich crusts have also been recovered from active ridges and are inferred to have formed in the vicinity of hydrothermal discharge areas (Scott et al., 1974; Moore and Vogt, 1976; Corliss et al., 1978; Hoffert et al., 1978). The source of the trace elements in the metalliferous deposits is generally not clear. They may be derived from seawater by adsorption onto the precipitates or crusts, or from hydrothermal solutions which have leached them from the basalts. Pb, however, can be used as a geochemical tracer because of the known isotopic compositional differences between oceanic basalts and seawater. Isotopic investigations of Pb in ferruginous sediments from the East Pacific have shown that it has been derived partly or mostly from a basaltic source (Bender et al., 1971; Dasch et al., 1971; Dymond et al., 1973). In the present study, Pb isotopic analyses have been made of a suite of metalliferous sediments (nontronite, Mn-oxide crust, Mn-Fe-oxide mud), pelagic sediments, and basalts from the Galapagos mounds area. The main purposes of the Pb study were to determine the source or sources of Pb in the metalliferous sediments, and whether or not stratigraphic variations exist in the isòtopic composition of Pb in the sediments.

On the Cape Verde Plateau, Neogene deposits are composed of major pelagic and hemipelagic sediments. These sediments show climatic sequences composed of two lithologic terms that differ in their siliciclastic and carbonate contents. Several turbiditic and contouritic sequences are interbedded in these deposits. Turbidite sequences are fine grained and thin bedded with a very low frequency (about 12 sequences during the Neogene). They are composed of quartz-rich siliciclastic or volcaniclastic sediments. Quartz-rich turbidites originated from the Senegalese margin. Their slightly higher frequency during the early Pliocene indicates that the stronger turbidity currents, and probably the most abundant continental inputs, occur at that period. Volcaniclastic turbidites are only present in the early Miocene (about 17 Ma) and the early Pleistocene (1 Ma). They have flown from adjacent Cape Verde Islands and reflect two episodes of high volcanic activity in this area. Contourite sequences, composed of biogenic sandy silts, represent less than 5% of the sediment pile and seem to have been mainly deposited during the late Pleistocene. These different sequences show clay mineral variations throughout Neogene time. Kaolinite is predominant in the Miocene and lower Pliocene deposits; this mineral decreases thereafter, with an increased trend of illite in the uppermost Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments, suggesting a change in sediment sources on the Saharan continent at about 2.6 Ma.

Nontronite, the main metalliferous phase of the Galapagos mounds, occurs at subsurface depths of about 2 to 20 meters; Mn-oxide material is limited to the upper 2 meters of the mounds. The nontronite forms intervals of up to a few meters' thickness, consisting essentially of 100% nontronite granules, which alternate with intervals of normal pelagic sediment. Electron microprobe analyses of nontronite granules from different core samples indicate that: (1) there is little difference in major element composition between nontronites from varying locations within the mounds, with adjacent granules from a given sample having very similar compositions; (2) individual granules show little internal variation in composition. This indicates that the granules are composed of a single mineral of essentially constant composition, consistent with relatively uniform conditions of Eh and composition during nontronite formation. Mn-oxide crusts have very low Fe contents, a feature characteristic of rapidly deposited Mn-oxide crusts formed under hydrothermal influences. The rare-earth element (REE) abundances of the nontronites are generally extremely low, totalling less than several ppm. Two samples have the negatively Ce anomaly typical of authigenic precipitates formed relatively rapidly from seawater. A Mn-oxide crust sample has low REE contents, typical of Mn-oxide crusts formed under hydrothermal influences, but no negative Ce anomaly. A sample of unusual Mn-Fe-oxide mud has relatively high REE concentrations and a seawater-type pattern; both of these features are also found for metalliferous sediments from the East Pacific Rise. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of the nontronites define a restricted field within a d18O-dD plot. In manganiferous sediments, d18O and dD appear to decrease with increase in the Mn-oxide content of the sediment. From the d18O values of the nontronites, formation temperatures in the range of about 20-30°C have been estimated. By comparison, temperatures of up to 11.5 °C at a 9-meter depth have been directly measured within the mounds (Corliss et al., 1979), and heat-flow data suggest present basement/sediment interface temperatures of 15-25°C. In a plot of Fe + Mn vs. d18O, the Mn-oxide crust and Mn-Fe-ooze plot near the tie-lines for authigenic Mn nodules and silicate phases, implying that they have formed in isotopic equilibrium with seawater at or close to bottom-water temperatures.

Chemical analyses were performed on major, minor, and rare-earth elements of pelagic and hemipelagic sediments of the forearc, arc, and backarc sites of the Izu-Bonin Arc, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126. Analyses of the hemipelagic and pelagic sediments of this area indicate that the chemical composition of this arc is highly affected by the chemical composition of rocks of this arc as a source of sediments. The Oligocene sediments, which are characterized by high MgO contents, reflect the chemical composition of the Paleogene volcanic rocks of the immature arc. Moreover, the late Miocene to Quaternary sediments with low MgO contents are attributed to the composition of the present arc. We also suggest that the sedimentation rates and topography of the sedimentary basin affect the MnO and SiO2 contents of pelagic and hemipelagic sediments.

The predictable in situ production of 230Th from the decay of uranium in seawater, and its subsequent removal by scavenging onto falling particles, provides a valuable tool for normalizing fluxes to the seafloor. We describe a new application, determination of the 232Th that dissolves in the water column and is removed to the seafloor. 232Th is supplied to the ocean in continental minerals, dissolution of which leads to a measurable standing stock in the water column. Sedimentary adsorbed 232Th/230Th ratios have the potential to provide a proxy for estimating the amount of dissolved material that enters the ocean, both today and in the past. Ten core top samples were treated with up to eight different leaching techniques in order to determine the best method for the separating adsorbed from lattice bound thorium. In addition, separate components of the sediments were analyzed to test whether clay dissolution was an important contribution to the final measurement. There was no systematic correlation between the strength of acid used in the leach and the measured 232Th/230Th ratios. In all cases clean foraminifera produced the same ratio as leaches on bulk sediment. In three out of five samples leaches performed on non-carbonate detritus in the <63 µm size fraction were also identical. Without additional water column data it is not yet clear whether there is a simple one to one correlation between the expected deep-water 232Th/230Th and that produced by leaching, especially in carbonate-rich sediments. However, higher ratios, and associated high 232Th adsorbed fluxes, were observed in areas with high expected detrital inputs. The adsorbed fraction was ~35-50% of the total 232Th in seven out of ten samples. Our 230Th normalized 232Th fluxes are reasonable by comparison to global estimates of detrital inputs to the ocean. In nine cases out of ten, the total 230Th-normalized 232Th flux is greater than predicted from the annual dust fall at each specific location, but lower than the average global detrital input from all sources.

Time series length-frequency data are presented for Themisto amphipods collected as swimmers by moored sediment traps since 2000 at the AWI deep-sea observatory HAUSGARTEN (79°N/4°E) in the eastern Fram Strait. Amphipod occurrences increased significantly from 2000 to 2009 at 200-300 m depth, and the North Atlantic species Themisto compressa was continuously present in the samples starting in 2004. We present year-round records of large adult Themisto amphipods, including the appearance of Themisto libellula with a total body length of up to 56.7 mm and juveniles starting from 4.0 mm. The length of Themisto abyssorum ranged from 4.2 to 25.6 mm, whereas it varied for Themisto compressa from 8.8 to 24.4 mm. Length-frequency analysis indicated a life span of 2 years for T. abyssorum and at least 3 years for T. libellula. The absence of juveniles for T. compressa suggested its reproduction in southern subarctic areas and its occasional northward migration with warmer Atlantic water into the eastern Fram Strait. The seasonal and long-term size structures of the three pelagic species were consistent over the course of the study, indicating no changes occurred in cohort development due to increasing abundances or warming water temperatures.

How organisms may adapt to rising global temperatures is uncertain, but concepts can emerge from studying adaptive physiological trait variations across existing spatial climate gradients. Many ectotherms, particularly fish, have evolved increasing genetic growth capacities with latitude (i.e. countergradient variation (CnGV) in growth), which are thought to be an adaptation primarily to strong gradients in seasonality. In contrast, evolutionary responses to gradients in mean temperature are often assumed to involve an alternative mode, 'thermal adaptation'. We measured thermal growth reaction norms in Pacific silverside populations (Atherinops affinis) occurring across a weak latitudinal temperature gradient with invariant seasonality along the North American Pacific coast. Instead of thermal adaptation, we found novel evidence for CnGV in growth, suggesting that CnGV is a ubiquitous mode of reaction-norm evolution in ectotherms even in response to weak spatial and, by inference, temporal climate gradients. A novel, large-scale comparison between ecologically equivalent Pacific versus Atlantic silversides (Menidia menidia) revealed how closely growth CnGV patterns reflect their respective climate gradients. While steep growth reaction norms and increasing growth plasticity with latitude in M. menidia mimicked the strong, highly seasonal Atlantic coastal gradient, shallow reaction norms and much smaller, latitude-independent growth plasticity in A. affinis resembled the weak Pacific latitudinal temperature gradient.

Nutrition of 6 deep-sea ophiuroid species of the genus Amphiophiura in the Pacific and Indian Oceans has been studied. One species is a detritus-feeder while the others are carnivorous. All 6 are widespread in deep-sea eutrophic regions of both oceans. Carnivorous species are also necrophagous, feeding on dead fish, surface pteropods, and crustaceans. Fishes are consumed mainly in the Indian Ocean, pteropods in the Pacific. Thus, as shown by carnivorous Amphtophiura, the rain of dead surface pelagic organisms is one of the most important sources of food for a number of deep-sea bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
