Bentonites (i.e., smectite-dominated, altered volcanic ash layers) were discovered in Berriasian to Valanginian hemipelagic (shelfal) to eupelagic (deep-sea) sediments of the Wombat Plateau (Site 761), Argo Abyssal Plain (Sites 261, 765), southern Exmouth Plateau (Site 763), and Gascoyne Abyssal Plain (Site 766). A volcaniclastic origin with trachyandesitic to rhyolitic ash as parent material is proved by the abundance of well-ordered montmorillonite, fresh to altered silicic glass shards, volcanogenic minerals (euhedral sanidine, apatite, slender zircon), and rock fragments, and by a vitroclastic ultra-fabric (smectitized glass shards). For the Argo Abyssal Plain, we can distinguish four types of bentonitic claystones of characteristic waxy appearance: (1) pure smectite bentonites, white to light gray, sharp basal contacts, and a homogeneous cryptocrystalline smectite matrix, (2) thin, greenish-gray bentonitic claystones having sharp upper and lower contacts, (3) gray-green bentonitic claystones mottled with background sedimentation and a distinct amount of terrigenous and pelagic detrital material, and (4) brick-red smectitic claystones having diffuse sedimentary contacts and a doubtful volcanic origin. For the other drill sites, we can distinguish between (1) pure bentonitic claystones similar in appearance and chemical composition to Type 1 of the Argo Abyssal Plain (except for gradual basal contacts) and (2) impure bentonitic claystones containing textures of volcanogenic smectite and pyroclastic grains with terrigenous and pelagic components resulting from resedimentation or bioturbation. The ash layers were progressively altered (smectitized) during diagenesis. Silicic glass was first hydrated, then slightly altered (etched with incipient smectite authigenesis), then moderately smectitized (with shard shape still intact), and finally, completely homogenized to a pure smectite matrix without obvious relict structures. Volcanic activity was associated with continental breakup and rapid subsidence during the "juvenile ocean phase." Potential source areas for a Neocomian post-breakup volcanism include Wombat Plateau, Joey and Roo rises, Scott Plateau, and Wallaby Plateau/Cape Range Fracture Zone. Westward-directed trade winds transported silicic ash from these volcanic source areas to the Exmouth Plateau and, via turbidity currents, into the adjacent abyssal plains. The Wombat and Argo abyssal plain bentonites are interpreted, at least in parts, as proximal or distal ash turbidites, respectively.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) have increased slowly in landlocked Arctic char over a 10- to 15-year period in the Arctic. Fluxes of Hg to sediments also show increases in most Arctic lakes. Correlation of Hg with trophic level (TL) was used to investigate and compare biomagnification of Hg in food webs from lakes in the Canadian Arctic sampled from 2002 to 2007. Concentrations of Hg (total Hg and methylmercury [MeHg]) in food webs were compared across longitudinal and latitudinal gradients in relation to d13C and d15N in periphyton, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and Arctic char of varying size-classes. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were calculated for the food web in each lake and related to available physical and chemical characteristics of the lakes. The relative content of MeHg increased with trophic level from 4.3 to 12.2% in periphyton, 41 to 79% in zooplankton, 59 to 72% in insects, and 74 to 100% in juvenile and adult char. The d13C signatures of adult char indicated coupling with benthic invertebrates. Cannibalism among char lengthened the food chain. Biomagnification was confirmed in all 18 lakes, with TMFs ranging from 3.5 ± 1.1 to 64.3 ± 0.8. Results indicate that TMFs and food chain length (FCL) are key factors in explaining interlake variability in biomagnification of [Hg] among different lakes.

Thirty sediment samples from Tortonian to Pleistocene age of five ODP locations (Holes 650A, 651A, and 652A, and Sites 654 and 655) in the Marsili Basin, Vavilov Basin, and Sardinia Margin (Tyrrhenian Sea) were studied by organic geochemical methods including total organic carbon determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, bitumen extraction, pyrolysis-gas chromatography, and organic petrography. Six organic facies, including open ocean anoxia with variable terrestrial input, oxic open ocean, oxic tidal flat, mildly oxic lagoon, and anoxic lacustrine algal-bacterial mat environments, have been recognized in these sediments. The sediments below 500 m in Sardinia Margin are mature for significant hydrocarbon generation. Possible mature source-rock (Type I and IIB/III kerogen) and migrated bitumen occur in the deeper part of the section in Vavilov Basin and Sardinia Margin sediments. Sporadic sapropel formation observed in the studied Pliocene-Pleistocene sediment section is probably controlled by organic productivity due to nutrient supply by the rivers and terrestrial input associated with open ocean anoxia or anoxia caused by the material balance between rate of organic matter supplied by turbidites and organic matter consumption. Pliocene and Pleistocene sapropels are mostly immature and lie within Type II-III (precisely as IIA-IIB and IIB source rocks) kerogen maturation path.

Organic matter in Miocene glacial sediments in Hole 739C on the Antarctic Shelf represents erosional recycled continental material. Various indications of maturity in bulk organic matter, kerogens, and extracts imply that an exposed section of mature organic carbon-rich material was present during the Miocene. Based on biomarker, n-alkane, and kerogen analysis, a massive diamictite of early Eocene/Oligocene age at Hole 739C contains immature organic matter. Visual and pyrolysis analyses of the kerogens suggest a predominance of terrestrial organic matter in all samples from Hole 739C. A reversal of thermal maturities, i.e., more-mature overlying less-mature sections, may be related to redeposition generated from glacial erosion. Siliciclastic fluviatile sediments of Lower Cretaceous age from Hole 741A were analyzed. The organic matter from this hole contains immature aliphatic and aromatic biomarkers as well as a suite of odd carbon number-dominated nalkanes. Visual examination and pyrolysis analysis of the kerogen suggests that predominantly immature terrestrial organic matter is present at Hole 741A. The similarities between Hole 739C Unit V and Hole 741A suggest that the source of the organic matter in the glacial sediments in Unit V at Hole 739C could be Cretaceous in age and similar to sediments sampled at Hole 741A in Prydz Bay.

Preliminary data are presented on dissolved heavy metals in interstitial water samples collected at Site 718 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 118. The heavy metals at this site are divided into three groups: Group I (B, K, Mn, Ni, Pb, total Si, total P, V) behaves like Mg, which decrease with depth; Group II (Ba, Cu, Sr, Ti) behaves like Ca, which increases with depth; and Group 111 (Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Na, Mo, Zn) contains metals that are independent of depth. Mg decreases with depth from 50 mM at the seafloor to 21 mM at 900 mbsf. Mn in the sulfate reduction zone (1.0 to 2.8 ppm) is more highly concentrated than in the methane fermentation zone (0.23 to 0.50 ppm), except for Section 116-718-1H-1. A similar behavior is also observed for V and Pb. Ni, B, and K decrease non-uniformly with depth. Ca and Sr increase with depth at the same rates, indicating the dissolution of inorganic calcium carbonate by anaerobic oxidation of organic matter (Sayles, 1981, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(81)90132-0). The distribution of Ba with depth is very similar to those of Ca and Sr. Cu and Ti profiles trend to increase non-uniformly with depth. Fe is constant with depth. The sharp decrease in total silicate concentration at the seafloor probably indicates a decrease in the decomposition of siliceous biological matter (e.g., diatoms) and production of opal. The constant levels of Group 111, except for Na and Fe, may reveal equal sources of supply from surface seawater and the Himalayas over time.

One argument for the subaerial formation of Nintoku Seamount in the Emperor chain is the occurrence of a red claystone interlayered between two basalt flows in Hole 432A. Detailed study of this material, presented here, defines its nature and composition and strongly indicates its subaerial formation.

Mineralogical and major-element compositions of 72 samples of volcanic ash, recovered from Site 808 at Nankai Trough during Leg 131, were analyzed in relation to the early diagenetic alteration. Alteration products are first observed at the following depths: smectite, 200 mbsf; clinoptilolite, 646 mbsf; and analcite, 810 mbsf. Glass decomposition dominates over authigenic mineral formation between 200 and 550 mbsf in the sediment column, whereas mineral formation becomes dominant below 550 mbsf. Based on the X-ray diffraction patterns, a broad and asymmetric peak of 15A suggests a presence of illite/smectite (I/S) mixed-layered minerals in a sample from 646 mbsf. I/S mixed-layered mineral formation, however, rarely occurs even at the bottom of the sediment column (1290 mbsf) at 120° C. This is possibly because zeolite (especially clinoptilolite) formed in the ash interferes with illite formation in the smectite. The formation of alteration minerals affects the major-element chemistry of the ash and the interstitial waters. H4SiO4 concentrations in interstitial waters increase during glass decomposition and decrease with smectite and clinoptilolite formation. K is removed from interstitial water into smectite and/or clinoptilolite. Mg is fixed into smectite (and/or chlorite).

Habitat fragmentation alters the edges of remnant habitat patches. We examined changes in the plant community and soil in relation to distance from edge and edge type for shrub-steppe and pine savannah grasslands in southern British Columbia, Canada. Community composition showed significant nonlinear relationships with distance-to-edge more frequently at paved roads and fruit crops than at dirt roads or control sites (i.e., in the interior of grassland patches), with changes typically extending 25-30 m. More exotic species and fewer native species were found near edges, and edges showed decreased cryptogam cover and increased bare ground, especially near paved roads. The soil factors that best predicted compositional changes were soil pH and Cu/Mn at paved roads, soil pH and nitrogen at fruit crops, and soil resistance at dirt roads. Variation partitioning suggested that both direct (e.g., propagule pressure) and indirect (environmental change) factors mediated edge-related community changes, and provided evidence that nonlinear responses at developed edges were not due to natural gradients. Given the range of grassland patch sizes in this region (many patches 1-100 ha), the edge effects we observed represent a considerable loss of "core" habitat, which must be accounted for in conservation planning and site restoration.

Ocean acidification caused by an increase in pCO2 is expected to drastically affect marine ecosystem composition, yet there is much uncertainty about the mechanisms through which ecosystems may be affected. Here we studied sea urchins that are common and important grazers in the Mediterranean (Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula). Our study included a natural CO2 seep plus reference sites in the Aegean Sea off Greece. The distribution of A. lixula was unaffected by the low pH environment, whereas densities of P. lividus were much reduced. There was skeletal degradation in both species living in acidified waters compared to reference sites and remarkable increases in skeletal manganese levels (P. lividus had a 541% increase, A. lixula a 243% increase), presumably due to changes in mineral crystalline structure. Levels of strontium and zinc were also altered. It is not yet known whether such dramatic changes in skeletal chemistry will affect coastal systems but our study reveals a mechanism that may alter inter-species interactions.
