Alkanes having unusual saturated isoprenoidal and methyl-branched structures have been isolated from the bitumen of several sediments. The methanogenic biomarkers 2,6,10,15,19-pentamethyleicosane and squalane were found in sediments which also contained bacteriogenic glycerol ethers. However, in one ether-containing sediment, 2,6,10,13,17,21-hexamethyldocosane was tentatively identified and this compound was found in place of the established alkane biomarkers. Other hydrocarbons found were regular C21 and C23 isoprenoid alkanes, compounds which cannot be derived from phytol; two isoprenoids of the type 3,7,11.-polymethylalkane, previously reported only in petroleums; 8-methylheptadecane, a probable biomarker for cyanobacteria and a number of its homologs and other methyl-branched alkanes. Ubiquitous branched-chain alkylbenzenes and a homology of trimethylalkylbenzenes were also isolated. Most, or all, of the compounds reported here are probably not catagenetic products but may represent direct algal or bacterial bioinputs.

We report on the comparative bioaccumulation, biotransformation and/or biomagnification from East Greenland ringed seal (Pusa hispida) blubber to polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tissues (adipose, liver and brain) of various classes and congeners of persistent chlorinated and brominated contaminants and metabolic by-products: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlordanes (CHLs), hydroxyl (OH-) and methylsulfonyl (MeSO2-) PCBs, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), OH-PBBs, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) flame retardants and OH- and methoxyl (MeO-) PBDEs, 2,2-dichloro-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethene (p,p'-DDE), 3-MeSO2-p,p'-DDE, pentachlorophenol (PCP) and 4-OH-heptachlorostyrene (4-OH-HpCS). We detected all of the investigated contaminants in ringed seal blubber with high frequency, the main diet of East Greenland bears, with the exception of OH-PCBs and 4-OH-HpCS, which indicated that these phenolic contaminants were likely of metabolic origin and formed in the bears from accumulated PCBs and octachlorostyrene (OCS), respectively, rather than being bioaccumulated from a seal blubber diet. For all of the detectable sum of classes or individual organohalogens, in general, the ringed seal to polar bear mean BMFs for SumPCBs, p,p'-DDE, SumCHLs, SumMeSO2-PCBs, 3-MeSO2-p,p'-DDE, PCP, SumPBDEs, total-(alpha)-HBCD, SumOH-PBDEs, SumMeO-PBDEs and SumOH-PBBs indicated that these organohalogens bioaccumulate, and in some cases there was tissue-specific biomagnification, e.g., BMFs for bear adipose and liver ranged from 2 to 570. The blood-brain barrier appeared to be effective in minimizing brain accumulation as BMFs were <= 1 in the brain, with the exception of SumOH-PBBs (mean BMF = 93±54). Unlike OH-PCB metabolites, OH-PBDEs in the bear tissues appeared to be mainly accumulated from the seal blubber rather than being metabolic formed from PBDEs in the bears. In vitro PBDE depletion assays using polar bear hepatic microsomes, wherein the rate of oxidative metabolism of PBDE congeners was very slow, supported the probability that accumulation from seals is the main source of OH-PBDEs in the bear tissues. Our findings demonstrated from ringed seal to polar bears that organohalogen biotransformation, bioaccumulation and/or biomagnification varied widely and depended on the contaminant in question. Our results show the increasing complexity of bioaccumulated and in some cases biomagnified, chlorinated and brominated contaminants and/or metabolites from the diet may be a contributing stress factor in the health of East Greenland polar bears.

Methanogen ether lipids have been quantified in sediments from a Florida swamp and the Atlantic ocean. Swamp cores containing acyclic and monocyclic isopranyl ethers are clearly differentiated from deep sea sediments which also contain bicyclic compounds. A concentration maximum near the bottom of the sulfate reducing zone in deep sea sediments may reflect a biogeochemical system in which methanogenesis and sulfate reduction are coupled by the process of methane oxidation. Lipid diagenesis is evident in the deep sea sediments. Species zonation, possibly caused by oxygen sensitivity, is detected in the relative lipid abundances in swamp sediments.

The chemical composition of surface associated metabolites of two Fucus species (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus) was analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to describe temporal patterns in chemical surface composition. Method: The two perennial brown macroalgae F. vesiculosus and F. serratus were sampled monthly at Bülk, outer Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27'21 N / 10°11'57 E) over an entire year (August 2012 - July 2013). Per month and species six non-fertile Fucus individuals were collected from mixed stands at a depth of 0.5 m under mid water level. For surface extraction approx. 50 g of the upper 5-10 cm apical thalli tips were cut off per species. The surface extraction of Fucus was performed according to the protocol of de Nys and co-workers (1998) with minor modifications (see Rickert et al. 2015). GC/EI-MS measurements were performed with a Waters GCT premier (Waters, Manchester, UK) coupled to an Agilent 6890N GC equipped with a DB-5 ms 30 m column (0.25 mm internal diameter, 0.25 mM film thickness, Agilent, USA). The inlet temperature was maintained at 250°C and samples were injected in split 10 mode. He carrier gas flow was adjusted to 1 ml min-1. Alkanes were used for referencing of retention times. The transport and deposition of terrestrially derived organic matter (TOM) into the ocean is an important but poorly constrained aspect of the modern global carbon cycle. A preliminary study of Late Quaternary sediments from the Congo deep sea fan (ODP leg 175, site 1075, 2 km water depth) and four surface samples from associated cores has confirmed the presence of proposed soil-specific bacteriohopanepolyol biomarkers (BHPs) including adenosylhopane, in samples to a depth of 89 m. Concentrations of soil marker BHPs are high in the upper sediment section (to 49 m) and the closest related surface sample (4913), supporting the case for these molecular markers as novel proxies for soil organic carbon (SOC) supply via riverine transport and subsequent burial. Distinct peaks for the markers at about 21, 34 and 60 m below surface level tentatively imply that the rate of TOM discharge from tropical Africa significantly increased at these times, possibly associated with periods of reduced soil stability in the Congo catchment.
